Watford’s summer overhaul continued in earnest with the capture of Spartak Moscow attacking midfielder Jose Manuel Jurado last week. The 29-year-old – who played under Hornets boss Quique Sanchez Flores during his spell with Atletico Madrid – expressed his delight at the chance to fulfil his dream of playing in the Premier League:

“I am very happy to come to Watford and I want to play right now. The Premier League is one of the best leagues in the world and it’s a dream for a player to come and play here. I am happy to be with Quique again and I hope this season is good for everybody. I want to play in England and Watford is a good opportunity to play in this league, and I like this opportunity.”

The History

Born in Cadiz, a province of Southern Spain, Jurado began his footballing education at Real Madrid, where he spent three successful seasons turning out for the B side. Having netted 13 goals in 95 appearances for the reserve outfit, Jurado earned his league debut with the senior team in October 2005. After notching a further couple of La Liga cameos in the 2005/06 campaign, he made the switch to Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2006.

By virtue of injuries to Maxi Rodriquez and Martin Petrov, Jurado was afforded a regular starting berth during his debut term at the Vicente Calderon Stadium, bagging one goal across 33 outings. After finding his playing time drastically reduced the following campaign (three starts), the Spanish playmaker was shipped out on loan to Mallorca for the 2008/09 La Liga season.

Jurado enjoyed the best period of his career to date with the Balearic club, chalking up nine goals and ten assists in 35 appearances. He subsequently enjoyed an increased role upon his return to Rojiblancos, featuring in every single league tie of the 2009/10 season while amassing seven goals and five assists. A solid attacking output wasn’t enough to earn Jurado a starting berth at the start of the 2010/11 season, leading to his sale to Schalke.

Managing just three goals and six assists from 31 appearances over two years in the Bundesliga, Jurado made the switch to Spartak Moscow in September 2012 in the pursuit of first-team football. An initial loan deal was made permanent just two months into his stay in Russia’s capital, as the former Real Madrid starlet went on to bag three goals and four assists in 18 appearances (30-match season). The 2013/14 campaign proved to be Jurado’s most profitable in the Russian Premier League, harvesting eight goals and two assists across 29 outings. After earning just ten starts in his final season in Russia, Jurado opted for a change of scenery this summer.

The Prospects

The versatile Jurado has typically operated from a central attacking midfield role throughout his career, but he’s also spent a fair amount of time stationed on the flanks – particularly the left. Having played as a number ten for all but six of 32 outings during his debut campaign with Spartak, he alternated between a variety of roles (attacking/centre mid, winger and support striker) in the 2013/14 season, before occupying a left flank berth for nearly half (13/28) of his starts in the previous campaign.

Handed his debut by the club just three days after signing, the Spaniard made an instant impact by providing the assist for Troy Deeney’s winner against Dundee United. Tellingly, he was the only Watford player to be handed 90 minutes on Saturday, which suggests that Flores is keen to build up the playmaker’s match sharpness ahead of the season kick-off.

The Spanish boss has now employed a 4-2-3-1 in all but one of his side’s matches and it’s fair to say there’s plenty of competition for the three slots behind lone striker Deeney. Ikechi Anya and Odion Ighalo also started at the weekend, though the likes of Almen Abdi, Matej Vydra and new boy Steven Burghuis are all tussling for starting berths.

Jurado’s previous stint under Flores may well work in his favour and at a price of just 5.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, he could stake a claim as a viable cheap midfielder. From a Fantasy perspective, Anya – at 4.5 – would be the more budget friendly option, whilst Vydra and Ighalo’s classification as forwards somewhat lessens their appeal.

The Hornets’ early schedule (eve, WBA, SOU, mci, SWA, new) sits on the tougher end of the spectrum, which might deter interest in their favourably priced assets. Indeed, Watford are rated bottom for attacking potential for the first six Gameweeks by our season ticker. For those who fancy Flores’ side to quickly find their feet, though, they alternate home/away with fellow promoted side Bournemouth if you’re looking for a rotation pairing to consider.

    @Doos

How are today sir? Wandering if i could have your opinion here:

I am in a conundrum with my gk's can only stretch to 9.0. Which pair would you be looking at? Focusing mainly on the FIRST 8 gws. Would be much appreciated. Alternatively, I wouldn't mind a copy of your ticker for my own further research if possible 😀

      Bit dizzy, otherwise good.

Will send, but my advice is 9.5 and Schmeichel/Fabianski.

Am familar with that pairing and most combos but i think i'll like to have a look at Doos's fixture ratings to make a final decision. Am also tempted by Butland/Speroni, Ruddy/Guzan, Kasper/Myhill

Palace and Villa are very attacking sides I think Norwich will be more pragmatic. Myhill could be under threat from Hennessey for when he moves.

Norwich are terrible defensively when they play top sides and top strikers. They are actually quite solid when they have good fixtures.

Doosra or who ever rotation expert!

Depay - Özil - Walcott. Worth downgradeing someone to upgrade my defence a bit?

    My defence is atm:

    Shaw - Merte - O'Shea - Huth - Targett

    or

    Merte - Jenks - Francis - O'Shea - Huth

Nowt wrong with def A. As long as Shaw doesn't get railroaded by Blind or Rojo

      Obviously Targett is temporary.

Unless you have Courtois in goal, I think Chelsea defender is a must.

So, I'm settled on my Midfiled.

So barring injuries or other news I'm going with this...

    Depay, Hazard, Walcott, Lionel, Waggamamma

    Now...

Do I double up with Rooney or Costa?

I'm more tempted with Diego, especially for GW1.

    Thoughts ?

Defenders are a different kettle of fish in my book. I'm making sure I have 5 solid defenders and I'm prepared to take educated risks. Bellerin is first choice in my book.

Debuchy was a panic buy and it shows. Bellerin actually suits Arsenal's style down to a tee.

Feeling a bit more confident with my pick today, I'm going to post it below and I guarantee within 2 replies I will have completely altered my squad. My thinking is 3-5-2 GW1 with Sakho on the bench, then reverse that GW2 with Richie on the bench as BOU/WHU have good rotation.

At present I have no plan for Aguero but could go Sterling to an inform 6.5 and upgrade Rooney for GW3/4 if I have 2 FT's

Let me know what you think...

    Schmeichel (Myhill)
    Azpi Cedric Kosc (Huth) (Ward)
    Walcott Sterling Hazard Ritchie Henderson
    Rooney Deeney (Sakho)

0.0 ITB and worried about that .....

    HELP!

A don't think you need 2 defenders at 6.0 pick either Koc or Azpli imo.
      the rotation idea sounds good.
me personally would just play 3-4-3 that way you could Dow Grade Ritchie and upgrade ur 3rd striker.

I see what you mean but I want 2 defenders who are virtually fixture proof and have attacking prowess too. Also I don't fancy having bench fodder so not really keen on a 4.5 who just sits on my bench. I'd rather have players who I feel comfortable bringing in and rotating. Suppose I could have Wanyama for GW1/2 and then transfer him for the best 4.5 mid option but is that not a waste of an FT?

hey guys just came up with this left field team could it work or to punty?

    its a 3-5-2 basically

    Kasper + 4.0 GK

    Mings Steven-Taylor O'Shea Cedric Azplicuteu

    Hazard Henderson Silva Walcott Erikson

    Rooney Deeney Wilson

    Basically rotate deeney and wilson?

other option is kane instead of rooeny and depay insteead of erikison as well as Kos instead of cedric

    Multiple games.....

Signed up for Sky FF and UFPL last night, alongside FPL of course.

How do you guys find managing multiple games?

I was already noticing last night that I was being wary of adding too many of the same players in each game because as soon as I have a bad week in one I'll have a bad week in all.

Additionally I don't want to differentiate too much just for the sake of it.

Which option do you guys prefer?

    B) Pelle + 4.5 def + 8.5 mid (Yaya/Mata/etc, already have Ars mid)
    C) Pelle + 4.0 def + Fabregas

If C it would mean I would have both Fabregas + Hazard in my mids. At the moment I'm leaning towards C. Currently have no Southampton "cover" and they have great fixtures to start the season (Unlike Liverpool). Pelle has also been on fire during pre-season and is a proven/nailed goal-scorer. Thoughts?

no. players are individuals. cazorla may or may not be a good option, same goes for ramsey, özil, walcott. you gotta compare these players against the players in the same price bracket (mata, depay, eriksen, yaya, sterling) and make a decision if they are worth it or not. not just blindly put them in because sanchez is awesome. for example, you werent able to cover kane with another spurs last season.

No that is true but I'm not basing it on a guess. I do believe I can find an alternative way into the Arsenal attack with Ozil and possibly Bellerin as well. Someone used an example of how Fabregas tends to always assist Costa. This could be a good way to 'cover' Costa.

What I'm saying is that if Sanchez does well there is a good chance that Ozil and one other (Giroud/Walcott/Bellerin) will have something to do with it

the outcome might be similar but i dont like the thinking behind coverage. if fabregas always assists costa you should see him as a 9.0 mid who gets a lot of assists and compare if he scores better than other 9.0 mids. costa you should judge as a 11mil forward and compare to rooney for example or giroud + 2 mil etc.. fab can assist costa all he wants but there is a chance you are better of without either of them and should instead go for sterling + rooney (just an example), imo thinking coverage restricts your vision

Ya Koeman has said they looking for one, hence considering the switch. Surprising to see Kos getting so much love on the forum. Almost 60% of teams have him, while rest of the Ars defence hardly getting any love.

        Monreal/Mert worth it?

People want Kos because of his attacking potential, and some say Mert may be rotated. I think he's safe. Mert over Monreal

So I think this will be my team, barring any major transfers/injuries

    Kasper (Hennessey)
    Azpi, Cedric, Huth (Francis, Targett)
    Hazard, Walcott, Depay, Mane (Surman)
    Costa, Benteke, Sakho

Targett to move once Bert back?
Mid looks nice but Walcott and Depay both are hit and miss, Ozil, Mata safer options.

      Great side otherwise.

Ya, definitely short term for Targett, but I can only afford 4.0 defender. I think Walcott and Depay have a very high ceiling for points, and definitely seem worth the risk. Easier to downgrade Walcott to Ozil rather than scrambling to find 0.5 somewhere to upgrade to Wally later on

Not too keen on the defence mate. Targett won't play
      Hennessey either.

Targett will for a couple of weeks, hennessey will if and when he gets transferred.

Targett is definitely the weakest link, but it's hard to find 0.5 anywhere. If Walcott doesn't do the buiness, he'll become Ozil/Cazorla and Targett will become a 4.5 defender. I'm fine with playing Kasper week in, week out.

    Sunderland.

First five fixtures are - lei/NOR/SWA/ast

With so many opting for Wilson/Deeney as their 3rd striker, why not Defoe for the same price?

Burnley also could, they scored the 2nd most goals in the Championship (behind Leicester) when they got promoted. Look what happened to them when they played in the EPL. Championship stats mean nothing.

If you look at stats and compare like that, good luck! Bourne scored 26 more goals than Burnley did in Championship. Burnley were never an attacking team.

Sunderland played 4312 in their last preseason match to good effect. If they do that again tonight against Doncaster and like to think they would opt for that against Leicester.

      Currently...

      Costa, Tekkers and Sakho

      Rooney GW2.

      But it's into final.

Worried about Rooney a little, and Sakho not best gw1.

Are you confident on Benteke? He's not had a full preseason with his new team yet, who knows whether will gel with the team immediately?

Worth taking a risk you reckon?

Agree about Sakho's first game but he is still best budget option by distance imo.

In similar price range I would only consider Ulloa or Vardy but there is too much uncertaincy at Leicester-

    Speroni - Butland
    Ivan - Kosc - Bassong - Francis - Prödl

    Rooney - Costa - Ighalo

Could Yoshida yet end up first choice for an extended period?

    - Failed bid for Alderweireld in summer.
    - Florin Gardos injured
    - Failed bid for Calum Chambers on loan
    - Latest transfer rumours are James Chester or Steven Caulker both of whom contributed heavily to their teams being relegated last year.
    - Time running out to develop a CB partnership with Fonte even if they sign one

if he is then he'll be a bargain, but rumour has it saintys have a celtic player lined up. they are jus waiting for them to finish their current competion, like they had to with forster last year.... so i would wait before sticking him in.

Alderweireld didn't arrive until well after the season began. That didn't seem to create any problems. 😕

    A) Costa, Kane, Depay
    B) Rooney, Benteke, Silva/Sterling

i'd say b.... but depends on the rest of your team a little....

do you have haz? cos he covers the chelsea side. silva over sterling.... that covers not having aguero for now. benteke could be a beast,

Kane is one to watch but he dipped at end of last season... sides have worked out how to deal with him so we have to see if he will adapt

I think a mix of the two would be best (if possible) Costa, Benteke and Sterling?

Otherwise, my gut says B (Depay is unproven in PL)

Yes i have hazard, but i like the thought of rooney being the main man for utd next season and costa has falcao and remy watching over him as well as being injury prone and a card magnet. Do they really know how to handle kane? We saw the best defence in the league fail to do so (chelsea).
