After weeks of negotiations, Norwich finally completed the signing of Hull’s Robbie Brady for an undisclosed fee, believed to be £7 million. The Republic of Ireland international penned a three-year deal with the Canaries and joins Graham Dorrans, Youssouf Mulumbu and Andre Wisdom in making the move to Carrow Road this summer.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Brady spoke of his happiness after dropping a division with the relegated Tigers:

“The feeling of being wanted is something I’m so grateful to the manager for, and to everyone who’s been behind it. It’s another opportunity to play at the highest level, which is where everyone wants to be. I’ll relish it, and will hopefully play as many games as possible. It’s a new chapter for me at Norwich now and I’m raring to go.”

THE HISTORY

Born in Dublin, Brady was spotted by Manchester United scouts playing for local side St. Kevin’s Boys. He joined the club’s academy shortly after his 16th birthday in January 2008, and made his debut for the reserves just months later. Brady played under-18 and reserve team football for the next few seasons, before graduating to the reserves on a permanent basis for the 2010/11 campaign.

The Irishman was sent out on loan to Hull City ahead of the 2011/12 season, and went on to make 39 appearances during the campaign, registering three goals and a couple of assists. Brady returned to Old Trafford the following year but he only managed one senior appearance for United, however, coming on as a late substitute in a cup win over Newcastle in September 2012. An initial loan return to Hull was made permanent in January 2013, with Brady’s four goals and 13 assists in 32 appearances guided the Tigers from the Championship back into the top-flight.

Brady went on to star for the Tigers on their return to the Premier League, scoring three goals and providing one assist in 16 appearances, before undergoing surgery to cure a hernia problem, missing out on the club’s run to the FA Cup final, where they lost 3-2 to Arsenal. Last season, Brady made 27 league appearances, registering two assists, but the Tigers two-year stay in the Premier League came to an end as they finished 18th.

Having represented the Republic of Ireland at under-17, under-19 and under-21 levels, Brady made his international debut in a 4-1 win against Oman in September 2012, scoring once and setting up two of the goals. Brady has since amassed 12 caps for his country, scoring three times.

THE PROSPECTS

Having featured in several different positions for both Hull and the Republic of Ireland, Brady should provide Norwich boss Alex Neil with plenty of flexibility. Speaking about his big summer signing, Neil revealed Brady would primarily feature down the left flank:

“I’m really pleased to sign Robbie. As everyone’s aware, we’ve been chasing him for quite a while, He’ll be an absolutely perfect fit for us. Hopefully he can go on and show everything that we think he’s capable of. He’s dynamic, he’s got good energy to get up and down the pitch, and he’s got a fantastic left foot which makes him a real danger at set-pieces. He’s got a lot of things in his locker. It gives us good competition down the left side.â€

In terms of tactics, Neil tended to operate with a lone striker system after taking the helm last year, rolling out 4-4-1-1, 4-1-4-1 and 4-2-3-1 formations. Bradley Johnson shone on the left flank, racking up 15 goals, but with Martin Olsson likely to miss the start of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery in the summer, Johnson has been occasionally fielded at left-back in pre-season. Brady also has plenty of experience in the position, particularly at international level, and offers an alternative until Olsson is ready for action.

The Swede is expected back shortly, though, and his return may well see Brady oust Johnson down the left of midfield. Certainly, he possesses greater pace than Johnson and is more of a natural wide man, with his cultured left foot able to deliver great quality into the box. Alternatively, Neil could utilise him centrally in the role in “the hole†behind a lone striker.

Coming in at 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Brady sets you back the same as Johnson and Nathan Redmond, whose place looks secure on the right of midfield. Neil’s words suggest he’ll be handed a fair share of dead-ball duties, whilst Brady will be also hoping to climb up the spot-kick pecking order, having occasionally taken penalties for Hull.

The Canaries have been handed a kind start to their return to the top flight, with their first six home fixtures (CPL, STO, BOU, LEI, WBA, SWA) particularly friendly. Away trips to Sunderland and Newcastle in the opening nine Gameweeks are also reasonable match-ups, so Brady could provide Fantasy managers with a decent budget option. Given that he’s joined with just over a week until the season starts, he may need time to settle into his new surrounds before some consider taking the plunge.

I'm happy enough to start with him and at that price point he's easy enough to transfer out when fixtures turn (Gomis, Bamford, Mitrovic, JRod, Diouf/Joselu all between 6.0-7.0 for example)

Yea that's why he's in for me. my 3rd striker spot will probably be a cheap forward...and he's the lesser of the evils until we know which of the cheap forwards look good.

He definitely is. A 5.0 keeper with tough fixtures, who will soon become a forced transfer. Doesn't mean he isn't a good option though!

I choose to be optimistic. Last 6 games after some horrendous defensive performances by WBA...

Palace away: 2-0 win, clean sheet
        Liverpool home: 0-0, clean sheet
Manchester United away: 1-0 win, clean sheet
        Newcastle away: 1-1
Chelsea home: 3-0 win, clean sheet
        Arsenal away: 4-1 loss

Plus @ 5.1 PPG, Myhill is miles ahead of Panti (4.4), Fabianski (4.1) and Mignolet (4.1) - the other main 5.0 contenders this season.

Fixtures definitely an issue, but this is Pulis we're talking about! 🙂 can see them being stubborn and trying to limit opponents to low percentage shots...ie saves for Myhill!

What if Hennessey signs for WBA? Could he start instead of Myhill until Foster returns? Would he then be a 5.0 keeper in 4.0 clothing? 😀

Myhill-Henessey should solve that problem. and an FT down the line can be planned for.

until October. I don't see spending an FT on keepers that big of an issue. I spent a couple of FTs on keepers last season and they were well worth it.

Southampton has some good starting fixtures - Mane was in the mix last season and appeared to prove himself well in the premiership.

Depay - admittedly that is a punt, but Van Gaal seems to support him looking forward - comes with a good record

To anyone who responds to RMTs with "Don't you dare play a 5th mid and a 3rd striker who both may actually score points because you'll give yourself a selection headache / benching dilemma..." never EVER play UFPL. You'll have a coronary.

True but it frustrates me seeing people being advised to get this 4.5 midfielder over that 5.0 when you've got nothing else on which to spend the money on the basis that you might bench some points. So what? There's plenty of points that aren't even in your squad but you don't fret about them. At least if you have that 5.0 guy it gives you an extra option. A squad is a useful thing if used properly but the vast majority on here treat it as a hindrance.

I wouldn't not got a player just because I might bench some points but if for example I'm playing 3-4-3 I will always get a 4.5m mid as bench fodder who I never intend to play. Rather spend the money elsewhere and not rotate.

Although that does raise a related question: why is it better to pick a formation and stick to it? If it suits the fixture list is it such a crime to be flexible enough to go 4 at the back one week for example?

No definitely not but money is he tightest at start of season so rather not spend extra money to get a mid I don't really want to play anyway

So you're more willing to have a deeper squad later in the season? But if the budget takes precedence why wouldn't you just keep ramping up the value of your first 11 later on instead?

Sorry if any of this comes across as antagonistic by the way, it's really not meant to be. I'm genuinely curious as to why using a full squad is worse than a slightly better same 11 every week. For instance, I don't see Yaya as a significantly worse purchase than Sterling and with the extra 0.5 you can get a better 5th defender.

Even for most of last season I had a 4.5m bench warmer.

I just meant if I was ever to have a better squad it would be later in the season when there's usually a bit more money to go around

I'd rather have Sterling and a 4.5m mid than Yaya and a 5m mid (for benching)

Palace signing Wickham for 9m, i just don't get why clubs keep spending big money on him? His goal scoring record is terrible for a striker, and most of those games came in the championship.

    Championship player at best.

I'd look to find £2-3million in order to upgrade either Wilson or Sakho. If you'd manage to get in the likes of Lukaku or Benteke the team would look better. One way of doing that is to go for Cazorla instead of Walcott (0.5 saved), a 6.0 mid instead of Mane (1.0 saved) and a cheaper defender instead of Ivanovic.

A little, I think. Ritchie->Henderson maybe, or even better: Mane if you can get 1M somewhere..
For me, 9M keeper rotation is the way to go, would never buy a premium keeper.
Defense: You have 3 premium defs. I would prefer 1-2 mid price/premium and 3 rotating ones.. But hey, thats me.

    Ok guys, is this madness?
Haz, Kun, Rooney in the same team.. Obviously I have to compromise other parts of the team, but I am seriously considering this.

    Butland - Schmeichel
    Azpi - Yoshida - O'shea - Francis - Ward
    Hazard - Ozil - Mane - Ki - Wanyama
    Aguero - Rooney - Defoe

    1. itwasTerry2win
      • 14 Years

It's not madness if they deliver the points, but you are heavily relying on them to do that as some of the others seems like "dodgy" picks (Yoshida, Francis, Ward, Ki and Defoe).

      1. BurkyBoy
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member
        • 11 Years
        10 years, 6 months ago

Yeah, you kind of put too many eggs in one basket..
Not sure if I agree to all your examples of dodgy picks though..
O'shea/Francis/Ward is SUN/BOU/CRY 13,5M rotation, will of course monitor who are most nailed on up to season start, but I believe these 3 are.
Ki and Defoe are proven PL players, and much less "dodgy" than e.g. Ritchie, Deeney, Wilson who I see in a lot of teams here.
Yoshida is a risk regarding playing time and thus maybe dodgy. But if he appears nailed-on he is a bargain at 4,5.

If a choose to downgrade Haz, Roon or Kun, I will probably use the money for Yosh->Kosc/Mert, Ozil->Wally, Mane->Depay or Sterling. Not touch the others anyway.

        1. itwasTerry2win
          • 14 Years

Asuming you will play Azpilicueta every match and that Yoshida will not play following the arrival of Caluker you will be forced to play two out of the three you just mentioned every GW. I don't mind O'Shea as Sunderland were quite good defensively after Advocat took charge, but Crystal Palace weren't at all solid defensively after Padew came in. Francis you don't know how will perform in the PL, so that's a gamble. I'd support that gamle if the rest of the defence were solid, but I do not believe it is.

Yeah, I kind of agree that Yoshida makes it all crumble. Need to upgrade him, at least to Cedric, preferably a solid 5,5.
            Thanks for the input!

Regarding cheap defensive roations, I find SUN/BOU/CRY the most appealing per now, especially since you need nailed on 4,5Ms for it to work. Of course, I can tweak these 3 4,5M defs.

Do you think Tadic will do the business this year?

Only had the one stand out performance last year.

I like him as a player. And those statisticians will back me up with all those underlying stats, which I've no clue since I'm not a member.

He's a tremendous value at 7.0 and central to SOU attack and has fixtures. What's not to like? I wish he's more nailed on, but I'm pretty damn sure he'll starting the season.

            Interesting.

He not been on my radar.

            I'll quiz Lucy.

            Thanks for the tip 🙂

    @SHIFTY,

So you've moved from Ruddy/Rudd to Myhill/Henn. Why?? I'm about to make the opposite.

Nah, just thinking about it and keeping an open mind....looking for some strong rebuttals! Still on Ruddy/Rudd.

what I really am playing around with now is dropping one of Kosc/Azpi for a Bellerin/Mert + 5.0...

          5.5 - 5.0 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4.5 and upgrade 7.0 mid to Sterling, with Sterling as Aguero bank.

Not sure if worth it though 😀

If Everton get Shaqiri, will we go in for Pique as well to make a pair?
