Fixtures

Man United and Wayne Rooney are doing a superb job of convincing us Fantasy managers that the fixture list can be disposed of as a guide to Fantasy potential. On paper, Arsenal at home and Bolton away were games that may have stretched United – in practice they were simply devastating, with Rooney the chief tormentor.

Can Rooney and United maintain this kind of form regardless of the opposition put in front of them? There will certainly be plenty praying that Chelsea can start applying the brakes to United and Rooney’s charge this weekend.

As for our regular analysis of the fixtures – that goes on regardless – delivered to your Monday menu as usual.

The Highs

West Brom
Three points at Carrow Road, Peter Odemwingie back amongst the goals and on form and a run of fixtures that appears to give Roy Hodgson’s side a springboard – things look good for the Baggies.

We mentioned last time out that the defence could be worth a gamble and Sunday’s clean sheet could be the first of several in the coming weeks with Swansea, Fulham, Sunderland and Wolves their next four opponents. Goals would also seem likely if West Brom can take confidence from Sunday’s victory. Odemwingie is worthy of attention amongst the big scoring heavyweight options up front, while Shane Long’s potential also shouldn’t be forgotten as a cheaper alternative.

Arsenal
Arsene’s new broom failed to ignite the Gunners against Swansea but the three points did at least get the ball rolling. A strong run of fixtures over the next four Gameweeks should help build confidence further, particularly if Arsenal can find their away form at struggling Blackburn next weekend.

Emirates clashes with Bolton and Sunderland then follow – both sides are conceding goals readily and should give Robin Van Persie, Mikel Arteta and the returning Gervinho opportunity to build their Fantasy reputations after a stalled start.

Aston Villa
To this point, we have to admit that Villa have disappointed. We’ve yet to see Darren Bent provide real value up front, while Shay Given has kept one clean sheet in three to bely his pre-season hype. The fixture list suggests that the situation could improve in the coming weeks, however.

Home games with Newcastle, Wigan and West Brom look crucial and potentially profitable, while trips to QPR and Sunderland in the next six Gameweeks could also offer returns. Villa’s assets still appear to have value in them, then, particularly in defence where Alan Hutton can now be acquired to offer an expected attacking threat from right-back.

Swansea
The promoted Welshman have so far failed to muster a single goal in the top flight with the Fantasy focus on their cheap defensive options to this point. That could change over the coming weeks and those who have given up hope on both Scott Sinclair and Danny Graham as cheap investments, could well come to regret selling on.

Liberty Stadium meetings with West Brom, Stoke and Bolton will be key in a vital stage in Swansea’s season. None of those sides will make things easy but, with trips to Norwich and Wolves also lying in wait over the next six Gameweeks, we will surely start to see Swansea register some goals.

Sinclair has hit the bar twice, while Graham has missed a hatful of chances. That situation has got to turn soon and the fixture list is doing all it can to help out.

Also consider…

QPR – Win tonight against Newcastle and Neil Warnock’s side will face a handsome run over the next four which could see them cement a comfortable mid-table position.

Sunderland – Steve Bruce’s side are struggling badly at both ends but do at least have a run of three matches that could provide a platform for recovery.

Newcastle – get the trip to Villa out of the way next weekend and the Magpies will surface a decent run of opponents which should see Fantasy interest in their squad increase.

The Lows

Man United
Alex Ferguson’s side may well be steamrolling over every opponent in their path but there’s still no denying that their forthcoming fixture list remains tough.

The next five Gameweeks will be crucial and, while those who have benefited from Wayne Rooney’s explosive form will insist on their man being fixture-proof, those who have missed his two consecutive hat-tricks will be hoping that his rate of scoring takes a significant dip in the coming weeks.

Certainly Chelsea on Sunday, following a Champions League tie in midweek, will provide a test for Rooney and his team-mates. A trip to face the sternest defence in the league then follows – Stoke’s start to the season in the face of stiff opposition has been commendable and they will surely pose a significant barrier in Gameweek six. Liverpool and City then lie in wait following the potentially profitable home clash with Norwich and, with European dates scattered around this, there will be concern that United’s boiling pot could be reduced to a simmer. Few will be selling on, but potential investors might, just might, be that little bit hesitant having missed the huge hauls to this point.

Everton
Leighton Baines demonstrated his value to Fantasy managers in the 2-2 draw with Villa with a goal from the spot and a performance that rightly earned him FPL bonus recognition. Baines was by far Everton’s most creative outlet and will likely go on being a key figure throughout the season. His forthcoming spell of fixtures however, is a horror show.

Following this weekend’s home clash with Wigan, Baines and Everton face City, Liverpool and Chelsea in consecutive matches, with a trip to Fulham up next before a Goodison clash with United. Clean sheets look very unlikely meaning that Baines will require further attacking returns to justify his current price tag.

Liverpool
With Luis Suarez drawing two consecutive blanks against a back drop of hat-tricks elsewhere, you can perhaps appreciate why we’re seeing sales of the Uruguayan. In all honesty, the short-term fixture list isn’t providing any assistance to argue against such a move. Trips to Spurs and Everton won’t be easy and, with a Gameweek 8 fixture with United to come, the home tie with Wolves in Gameweek 6 looks vital to Suarez owners.

With the Liverpool back-four to be tested in the weeks to come, then, those keeping the faith will be hoping that this will draw the sting from Suarez and his attacking comrades. It’s been working for Rooney at United and Suarez undoubtedly has the class to follow suit if Liverpool can start taking their chances.

Be wary of…
Tottenham – Emmanuel Adebayor announced himself with a goal in the 2-0 win at Molineux and already Fantasy managers are queuing to capitalise on his apparently modest price tag. Spurs face Liverpool, Arsenal and a trip to Newcastle in the next four though – three defences that should put up real resistance to his new striking partnership with Jermain Defoe.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Nah, the trick is to congratulate yourself when it goes well, and to berate everyone who gave you advice on here / 'casual' players who stupidly captained the best player in the League who is also on red-hot form / your bad luck / your mini-league rivals' good luck.

So, no Walcott assist yet? I know it wasn't an assist, nor was Rooney's, yet he got credited with one and under the letter of the rules Walcott's should be too.

It's a minor thing but those extra points, as well as potential altering of BP allocation based on the assist do make a difference. It's only a game and all that but if the rules are this vague it makes even more of a farce of what has been a pretty farcical start to the FPL season.

Will it be the case that, like when Howard Webb is refereeing a Man U match that they also get the luck of the draw with regard to FPL scoring? Has it got to that stage?

vorm PICKED THE BALL UP this is why it is NOT AN ASSIST, had he parried walcott's shot onto rangel's feet then he would be credited with the goal.

Nothing in the rules say anything about a goalie picking a ball up - it's still in play, it hasn't left the pitch and the ref hasn't blown the whistle. Under the rules that doesn't alter anything.

Quote: Assists are awarded to the player from the goal scoring team, who makes the last touch before the goal is scored.

If after this touch, an opposing player touches the ball outside the penalty area altering the intended destination of the ball, then no assist is given, except if this intervention directly results in an own goal. The Swansea defender deflected Walcott's shot outside the penalty area which changed the direction of the ball significantly. Therefore it won't be an assist.

I have Walcott and I'd gladly take the three points, but common sense says it wasn't an assist. Damned if I understand the new rule, though. Don't know if I'm ever going to. Does it have to be this difficult to understand?

Yeah, we all know it wasn't an assist - but neither was Rooney's, that's the problem, the rules are ridiculous but they need to be consistent. VanDerBale says about Vorm picking the ball up but there's nothing in the rules about that changing anything.

I think its the deflection that happened outside the box which means its not an assist under the FPL rules.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love the points...but I doubt it will happen.

Walcott shot was outside the box, defelected off defender (still outside the box) and looped up for Vorm to catch.

              Then Vorm did his thing.

Yeah, the goalie picking the ball up should have nothing to do with it.

Well, it SHOULD have something to do with it if the assist rule was sensible, but they proved with Rooney's assist that it's not. If they're going by the letter of the stupid rule, then it's 3 points to Walcott.

      What if........

The GK saved it....ran the length of the field skinning everyone.....took a shot, hit the bar.....it bounced out to the opposing striker who first times it 60 yards into the empty goal.....assist given?

        No.

Once any opposing play touches the ball outside the area then the assist chance has gone.

You could argue that, if they were to charge forward and keep kicking the ball in the direction of the goal then none of their touches was altering that intention. I suspect that here the intention in question has to be that of the original attacker.

But that's my only interpretation of the words they have used. Everything else is clear.

Only based on Walcott's initial shot being 2 feet outside the box otherwise it would be an assist under the new rules. That's why they're stupid. Rooney's was also never an assist but it counted.

Im sick of people saying newbies are lucky as they know nothing and just go with the popular well known players like rooney. Im a new player myself but spent heaps of time online reading forums, looking at lst yrs stats and also watching every game and then after all that, using my judgement on who to captain, who to bench, who to transfer etc. Pr%cks are just spewin they arent scoring...and sh%t of course this FFL is based around luck, if there was no luck involved I would just pick all the players the scout recomends.

    Thats my rant anyways 🙂

No, people are grumbling (rightly or wrongly) about people who have no interest in football or FF who are doing well by just picking and captaining famous players. By doing loads of research, you aren't one of them.

Famous = good usually. Shame on us long time players for not doing as well. There has been little or no 'unlucky' results this season thus far.

I myself captained Van Persie over Rooney this weekend. In hindsight it was a ridiculous decision really, and the same thing can be said with foresight.

Well done to those who have selected and captained the likes of Rooney, Aguero, Dzeko, Young, Silva etc. Good judgement and well played.

I have been way over reliant on the old fixtures this year, huge lesson learnt. OK for the worse half of your team but not for 90% of it!

It's pointless complaining about it anyway because unless Rooney continues to score hat tricks every gw till the end of the season, the more thought out approach will win in the end.

I just don't get this article. Okay United's fixtures arent good but surely that only affects their possible clean sheets and not their goalscoring potential when you consider that they've scored 3,3 and 8 against three top six teams already. Same thing with Liverpool and Suarez - Spurs and Everton are tough matches so I wouldn't buy Enrique rigth now, but those 2 sides are shipping goals to opposition so I doubt it'd affect Suarez, Adam, Downing etc.

I agree in some ways, although home ground advantage is an "advantage" eg getting more calls, home players seem to play harder generally across then team than the away side. And generally top sides are going to have generally better and more experinced defenders all of which may disrupt scoring. But with class attackers like ManU and ManC, you may stop the goals but there will always be a truck load of goal chances, just seems these 2 top teams have taken a lot of their chances this yr so far.

I'm new to champions league ff
I was wondering since you are allowed to make manager substitions would it be a good tactic to play all of your players who play on the tuesday, regardless of who they are or play for and then if they underperform just replace them with a bench player who plays on the wednesday??

Wenger will persist with 4-5-1 and Gervinho will be straight back in the team. That leaves one spot up for grabs between Walcott, Arshavin and Benayoun. While Walcott is fav to start, he was dire against Swansea and at least Arshavin scored (although he was poor himself)

If Walcott is poor in the Champs League...he could be dropped at the weekend.

Easily the worst decision I've made this season was during the free GW2 wildcard...

    Option was...

    A.Cole and Yaya Toure

    or

    Bosingwa and Silva

You can guess which I picked. Has cost me countless points and value. Looks stupid with hindsight but was worried about possible rotation of Bosingwa and in GW1 Yaya had about a million shots + bonus.

Apparently the player was just involved in a multi-million pound transfer, and the club that bought him had no idea about his little secret.

Could be Anton Ferdinand though, keeping up the family tradition.

I'd put good money on one of Downing or Carroll. Probably the former when he signed for Villa.

Think this will be a massive letdown. Someone who made a transfer that just might reach £2M with addons payed out over 5 years. Leroy Lita or similar.

Man Utd will probably win, but will they ship 3-5 past Chelsea. doubt it. 2-1 or 2-0 is probably the best they can hope for.

Dare I not captain Rooney again. Every time I don't I get spanked royally by my lessers.

3-1 United is my predo. Young is going to r*pe Bosingwa, like Valencia did to Cole last year. And Chelsea have been playing poorly this season.

surely Young would get sent off if that were true. I'm no expert but that is definitely a red card offence.

Rooney, RVP or Silva are best captain choices.

I think Silva is the best bet this weekend.

They've had 4 bad fixtures and Rooney already has over 50 points. Playing the fixtures is GREAT.

I have a question: What do the clothing brand Henleys represent? Are they affiliated with a sport? What kind of people wear Henleys?

In glasgow, the majority of people who wear Henleys clothing are neds (or chavs), i don't really know what it's like down south.
