Chelsea starlet Patrick Bamford became Crystal Palace’s second new face in the summer transfer window, following the capture of Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Yohan Cabaye. The England U21 international revealed that Selhurst Park was his preferred destination for a loan move, having netted 17 goals for Middlesbrough in the Championship last term:

“I was quite keen to stay close to London this time and Palace were actually my first choice, but I didn’t realise they were keen to start with. Then, when I met with the manager, he put forward his plans and it was an easy decision. I like to get in behind the defence. I’d say I’m deceptively quick, but I’m sure they’ll make their own minds up! I do like to score goals, so hopefully I’ll be able to do that a lot here. I want to try to establish myself in a Premier League team and if I can do that here then it would be great for me and great for the club.”

The History

Brought up in Nottinghamshire, Bamford joined Nottingham Forest’s youth academy from the age of eight. After spending ten years working his way through the ranks, the forward was handed his senior debut in December 2011. He made just one further cameo that term, before going on to tally five goals and four assists in seven outings for the reserve side.

Chelsea moved quickly to snap up the blossoming talent in January 2012 on a five-year deal. Following a spell with the Blues’ U21 squad, Bamford was loaned out to Milton Keynes Dons in November 2012, where he bagged four goals and two assists across 14 appearances before the end of the season. With his loan extended to January 2014, Bamford continued to excel at the Buckinghamshire club, notching 14 goals and two assists in 23 appearances.

In light of his rising talents, Bamford earned a loan move to Derby County in January 2014. The step up to the Championship proved to be a seamless transition for the Englishman, harvesting eight goals and three assists in 21 league appearances.

Most recently, Bamford spent the 2014/15 campaign on loan to Middlesbrough. He sat out just eight league matches during his stint at the Riverside Stadium, chalking up 17 goals and five assists in 38 outings. The Blues loanee was subsequently honoured as the Championship Player of the Year for his efforts. He has turned out six times for England U18, U19 and U21 sides and found the net on one occasion.

The Prospects

Having confirmed the deal, Eagles boss Alan Pardew indicated that the much sought-after striker will be afforded the chance to develop at Selhurst Park over the next 12 months:

“It’s a coup for Crystal Palace ahead of a host of rivals. I’m so pleased he chose us over others to help develop his game. Hopefully he will be a star for us, Chelsea and – of course – England. Patrick is one of England’s brightest prospects and I will liaise with José Mourinho, [England Under-21 coach] Gareth Southgate and Dan Ashworth [director of elite development at the FA] on his progress during this important year in his career.”

Certainly, you’d think that Chelsea wouldn’t have sanctioned Bamford’s switch if they weren’t confident he’d be afforded pitch time by Pardew. The Forest youth product could challenge the likes of Glenn Murray and Marouane Chamakh for starts up front, though the imminent arrival of Sunderland’s Connor Wickham will add further competition, considering that the Eagles boss also has Dwight Gayle and Fraizer Campbell at his disposal. Given that the youngster won just 27% of his headers last term, he may lack the aerial dominance to lead the line in Pardew’s preferred 4-2-3-1, though.

Nonetheless, Bamford’s versatility should strengthen his chances of pitch time if Pardew opts for Murray or Chamakh as the target man. As well as being fielded as a lone striker, he was stationed on the left and in “the hole” on numerous occasions in the previous campaign and also played on both wings during his spell with Derby. Essentially, then, his arrival also boosts Pardew’s options out wide, offering competition to the likes of Yannick Bolasie, Jason Puncheon and Wilfried Zaha.

A goal conversion rate of 16.3% last season also heightens his likelihood of starts, given that Murray, with seven strikes, was Palace’s top scorer in the season gone by. It’s worth noting that, after Pardew’s arrival, the Selhurst Park side were ranked sixth for goals (27) and third for shots inside the box (167) in 2014/15 and with new boy Cabaye pulling the strings in central midfield, they could offer us excellent value option in the season ahead.

Coming in at 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Bamford wasted no time in staking a claim for a starting berth, firing a 20-minute hat-trick against Bromley Town on his debut in midweek. It remains to be seen just where he’ll fit into Pardew’s XI, though, and with Puncheon (6.0), Cabaye, Bolasie (both 6.5) and Zaha (5.5) all jostling for our attentions in the centre of the park, Bamford’s classification as a forward across the Fantasy games may ultimately deter investment.

With showdowns against Arsenal, Chelsea, City and Spurs in the first six rounds of fixtures, Palace’s poor opening schedule will allow us to assess the new boy’s impact on Pardew’s XI before the fixtures take a turn for the better in Gameweek 7.

Hi guys, how´s it going. Cant wait till PL starts and would appreciate some feedback on my current team and think I´ve finally settled. (Must have changed it a hundred times now). Anyway here´s my team.

    Panti (hennesay)
    Mert, cedric, huth (Williams, targett)
    Fab, silva, ozil, chadli (Fletcher)
    Costa, rooney, sakho

Here´s a few thoughts behind my decisions.

Im going with panti at 5.0 because of his great fixtures and saving potential. Imo he´s better than a 4.5 rotation. May consider changing him when I use my WC around GW 4. Hennessy is just a 4.0 gk I´ve chosen because of chance of playing time if he gets sold.

Mert has good fixtures and nailed I think, but I consider changing him for either monorail or debuchy, but I dont know who´s nailed. Cedric because he playes for sout and is cheap, I know many think sout will keep less CS this year cause of the loss of schnei but I still think they will do great. Also going with huth who rotates well with williams who has great CBI stats. Chosen targett because he´s the only 4.0 def that gets playing time in the beginning and his potential for a prise rise.

Chosen fab instead of Haz to save up 2.5 and his great form at the beginning of seasons but may change him with haz when i use WC if haz playes good. Silva is the best player to get some city coverage at the mid imo, but may change him with sterling if he plays good. Know many in here think his price is too much, but he´s a proven player. Chosen ozil in the ars mid because of great performance in preseason and I think he will do better this year with more experience in the PL and his offensive role. Have considered wally, but he´s a little too punty imo. Also saving .5 by doing this which comes in handy. Chadli instead of Hendo/milner because I think he´s a better option. Played very little last year but managed a great PPG and I think he will player more this year. Fletcher is just a bench warmer, but I´ve chosen him instead of wanyama because I think wanyama has a potential for going down in price.

Costa was good when he played last year, but i think he will do even better this year with one year experience in PL. Don´t think he is going to be more injured this year because he haven´t played world cup this year. Also he has very good stats against swansea last year. 5 goals in 2 games. Chosen rooney because he will get a more attacking role this year with fallacy and rvp gone, and I think man ute will produce a lot of chances for him with a better midfield and fixtures. At last I´ve chosen sakho as my cheap forward. Did good last year at west ham, has one year experience now and has great fixtures. I´ll see whether I change rooney or costa for Aguero in GW 4 and who I´ll change in my midfield.

Took some time writing this RMT so i would appreciate feedback, rating of my team, where I could improve etc. Have seen a lot of RMT’s where people just write their team and hope´s for responses. It´s better doing the RMT throughout so people understand´s your thinking behind your choices. Thanks.

Enough with the cheap mids people...Fletcher is a waste of space...Henderson is overpriced for the risk he presents when Liverpool are likely to stink up the pitch at Brittania...and you look up and some other schmuck takes the penos. All else looks good, can´t be getting a player this season with the intention of benching him the entire season or to raise cash...that´s the wrong way...my goal is to see how many points I can leave on the bench...all the better if they still underscore my starters.

Good stuff. You have thought this through. So nice to see a thought through analysis

Gk: looks good but personally going ultra cheap this year
Def: Kosc is better than Mert for bps. No Chelsea might hurt in long run. I think Cedric will do well, looked good in preseason
Mid: the old Haz vs Fab debate will rumble on. See what Charity shield brings. Haz has shown form in preseason which could be ominous. I'm not an Ozil fan and Triggerlips has a good analysis on his web site
Fwd: looks good. Personally just dropped Costa as he has been poor in preseason, I chose him for exactly the reasons you did but looking at the fixtures and Pelle form and fixtures I swapped. Any plan for Augero?

Thanks a lot for a great feedback. Cant afford kosc instead of mert, or any chelsea def. Have to look at the CS to be sure about my choice about fab and I like ozil a lot. Honestly I like the look of two heavy hitters up top and preseason often dont actually show the outcome of one players season, but thanks a lot. Seriously considering to take some of your advices.

don't think so..both those players have a very specific role in a specific system of play.

I think Spurs adapted their system around Kane...if they continue that same system this season and Kane falters, the team falls apart.

Goalkeepers weak - no Man Utd or City cover, which could bite you.........double Southampton attack I like, but Mane playing better in pre-season than Pelle.

      GK 6/10

Just a comment on one selection: I started off with Azpi and Kos but am questioning whether Azpi will actually be worth that price.

He was squeezing baps out last year and with the reduction in emphasis on pass completion and increase on clearances I see those drying up. Might be worth further thought

I've chosen to double up on Arsenal mids, and gone for Ozil over Milner. Hence, the tight budget.

Plus, with the pre-season that West Ham had, you think Sakho + Payet would be safe?

    A) 5.0. 5.0. 4.5/4.5. 4.0
    B) 5.0. 4.5/4.5. 4.5/4.5
    C) 5.5. 4.5. 4.5/4.5. 4.0

Hi guys, been using the site for a couple of seasons but signed up to be a member this year. Please RMT!

    Krul / Pantilimon
    Richards / Cedric / O'Shea / Mings / Aldeweireld
    Henderson / Mane / Hazard / Bolasie / Ki
    Rooney / Kane / Deeney

Idea would be to get rid of Rooney for Aguero once fit, I'm a United fan but not convinced Roo can score enough

    Thanks!

  22. LJJM Duckies

If 4.5m mids are generally not used except as Autosubs at some point, is it wise to pick Wanyama and limit yourself to only 2 other Southampton players?

I currently have Cedric and Mane. If I chose Wanyama, the getting Pelle if he comes out of the blocks becomes a 2 transfer problem. Hence, I choose Fletcher as my 4.5m mid.

    Thoughts?

    1. BERGKOP
      • 14 Years
      10 years, 6 months ago

This is the problem. I'd go with a 5th mid that's from a team you probably won't need 3 players from.

    RMT. All feedback appreciated

    Butland/Ruddy

Ivanovic, Koscielny, Francis, O'Shea, Targett (Francis/O'Shea rotation)

Hazard, Walcott, Mane, Ritchie, Ibe (Ritchie/Ibe/Sakho can rotate well)

    Rooney, Pelle, Sakho

0.5 left in bank for fitting Aguero/other transfers

    1. Not 100% sure about the defence although total cost is £26 which isn't too high.

    2. Maybe not enough big hitters? Hazard, Rooney and potentially Walcott?

    Thanks in advance 🙂

      looks ok to me.

2 'big hitting' defenders - similar to my (current) choice.

I've got hazard and Walcott too so midfield looks ok, tho possibly one 'name' light?

      strikers decent.

only problem I can see is (and this is the same for all of us) by having the likes of ivanovic Walcott hazard you have to fill the last few places with the cheaper options.

personally i'd try to fit in a more obvious top midfielder but easier said than done

Yeh I'm not 100% on having two big hitting defenders, might downgrade Kosc to a 5.5/5 and upgrade Ritchie to Henderson maybe? Or upgrade Mane to Sterling?

      Gk: Rotation of choice
Def: Ivan a bit pricey for me. Surely BOU will leak goals?
Mid: Ritchie a bit risky but could pay off with those fixtures. Personally wouldn't double up. Ibe another punt with limited pitch time
      Fwd: SAMs as mine

BOU might be leaky but their fixtures are good and Francis can rotate with O'Shea decently. He's also an attacking full back so could get some joy there. Agree with Ritchie but think hes an ok gamble for 6.0. Ibe also in there as the 5th midfielder for rotation but I think he'll get at least some game time and his price will increase. Could be a bargain if he gets game time.

With Rodgers recently claiming Ibe will be heavily involved this season is anyone here taking the plunge from GW1? At 5.0 if he really will be a first team regular he would surely offer excellent value.
