Scout Notes – Pre-Season Round Up – Saturday

Scott Sinclair bags a hat-trick as Villa draw with Forest. Philippe Coutinho helps Liverpool to victory. Cameron Jerome returns from injury to net for Norwich. Jeremain Lens fires the winner for Sunderland, whilst Raheem Sterling provides a pair of assists as City stumble in Stuttgart. Here’s a round-up of yesterday’s action, which saw 12 top-flight teams take to the pitch…

Cologne 2 Stoke 1

In the first of two weekend matches, Mark Hughes rolled out a mixture of first-team players and fringe assets for yesterday’s loss to Cologne. Jack Butland was protected by a back-four of Glen Johnson, Marc Muniesa, Dionatan Teixeira and Erik Pieters, whilst Steve Sidwell and new signing Ibrahim Afellay sat in the double-pivot in a 4-2-3-1. Jon Walters, Marco van Ginkel and Stephen Ireland tucked in behind lone striker Joselu. The Potters boss made just one change in the second period, bringing on Peter Odemwingie for Afellay, and the Nigerian grabbed his side’s consolation, heading home from a Van Ginkel cross.

After the match, Hughes hailed Odemwingie’s impact as the former West Brom man – priced at 5.0 in FPL – looks to put his injury problems behind him. The Potters boss also confirmed his plans to rotate for today’s match with Porto:

“It was good for Pete to get on the scoresheet and I thought he gave us a little bit more of a threat in behind when he came on. He affected the game in the right manner and it was a really good finish by him after what was also a good ball in. At that point it went to 1-1 and we expected to see the game out but it wasn’t to be and we’ll come again tomorrow handing some game time to a number of the other guys.”

Fulham 1 Crystal Palace 1

Pape Souare grabbed the Eagles’ only goal, courtesy of an assist from substitute Jordon Mutch. Alan Pardew rang the changes from the side that defeated Bromley Town 6-0 on Thursday evening. Wayne Hennessey earned the nod between the posts, with Julian Speroni missing out due to a hand problem, whilst Joel Ward, Damien Delaney, Scott Dann and Souare made up the back-four. With Mile Jedinak and James McArthur stationed in the double-pivot, Yohan Cabye tucked in behind lone striker Glenn Murray, with Jason Puncheon and Chung-Yong Lee handed the roles on the flanks. Pardew made seven changes over the course of the second period, introducing the likes of Fraizer Campbell, Dwight Gayle, Mutch and Wilfried Zaha, but his side were unable to find a winner.

Hoffenheim 0 Bournemouth 0

Having played against Cardiff on Friday evening, Eddie Howe tweaked his lineup for yesterday’s trip to Germany. The Cherries manager named Artur Boruc in goal, with Adam Smith, Tommy Elphick, Steve Cook and Tyrone Mings in the back-four. Further up the field, Matt Ritchie, Dan Gosling, Shaun MacDonald, Junior Stanislas and Joshua King lined up behind lone frontman Callum Wilson. The latter came close on a couple of occasions but despite dominating the proceedings, with Ritchie pulling the strings, the visitors were unable to find a way past the Hoffenheim keeper.

Nottingham Forest 3 Aston Villa 3

Scott Sinclair hogged the headlines after bagging a hat-trick in a six-goal thriller at Forest. Tim Sherwood handed new boys Jordan Ayew and Jose Angel Crespo their first starts, Jordan Veretout made his debut at half-time, though the match came too soon for Rudy Gestede, who signed for the midlands outfit on Friday afternoon.

Sherwood named Mark Bunn in goal, with Crespo, Micah Richards, Ciaran Clark and Jordan Amavi making up a four-man backline. Crespo lasted just over half an hour before he was replaced by Alan Hutton after limping off with a knee problem. Leandro Bacuna was again selected on the right flank, with Idrissa Gueye, Ashley Westwood and Sinclair stationed behind a front two of Ayew and Libor Kozak.

Left-back Amavi continued his impressive form by providing the assist for Sinclair’s first, whilst Joe Cole – one of seven changes by Sherwood – teed up the wide man to complete his hat-trick. With a price of just 5.0 in FPL, Sinclair may well come to the fore as one of the best budget midfield options around and has some kind opening fixtures to maintain his current showings.

Leeds United 2 Everton 0

Roberto Martinez clearly had one eye on today’s clash with Villarreal, as the Toffees made their way to Elland Road. The likes of Joel Robles, James McCarthy, Ross Barkley, Bryan Oviedo, Steven Naismith and Arouna Kone were joined by a number of Academy players, though Tom Cleverley and Kevin Mirallas were afforded minutes off the bench in the second period.

After the match, Martinez confirmed that Romelu Lukaku will be ready to face Watford in next week’s opener at Goodison, though the big Belgian may be rested for Duncan Ferguson’s testimonial later day:

“We’ll assess him [ahead of the game against Villarreal]. I don’t think we’re going to take any risks with him on Sunday. I would say from a medical point of view, he is fully fit. It is just a case of making sure we give him a good introduction to work with the group because he’s not had a chance to do that yet. I wouldn’t risk him in a pre-season game – but Rom will be fully fit for the start of the season against Watford at home.”

Birmingham City 2 Leicester City 3

Goals from Robert Huth, Danny Drinkwater and Shinji Okazaki sealed a dramatic comeback win for the Foxes, who finish their pre-season campaign unbeaten under Claudio Ranieri.

The Italian lined his side up in a 3-4-1-2 set-up once again, with Kasper Schmeichel behind a back-three of Marcin Wasilewski, Huth and Ben Chilwell. Marc Albrighton and Jeffrey Schlupp were fielded as wing-backs, with Andy King and Drinkwater stationed in central midfield, whilst Riyad Mahrez tucked in behind Leonardo Ulloa and Jamie Vardy.

Mahrez played a pivotal part in all three of his side’s goals. Priced at 5.5 in FPL, the Algerian’s corner was flicked on by King for Huth to net the Foxes’ first, before he provided the assist for Leicester’s final two strikes.

Ranieri made five changes over the course of the second period, with Christian Fuchs, Andrej Kramaric and goal scorer Okazaki amongst those who emerged from the bench.

Newcastle United 0 Borussia MGladbach 1

The Magpies spurned a host of opportunities – with new boy Aleksandar Mitrovic hitting the woodwork – as they fell to a fourth defeat in the last six summer friendlies.

Once again, Newcastle lined up a 4-2-3-1 formation. Tim Krul, Daryl Janmaat, Mike Williamson, Steven Taylor and Massadio Haidara made up the home side’s defence, whilst Vurnon Anita and Jack Colback were stationed in the double-pivot. Further up the field, Moussa Sissoko, Georginio Wijnaldum and Gabriel Obertan were handed the attacking midfield roles behind Papiss Cisse. Steve McClaren made five alterations as the second-half unfolded – Mitrovic and fellow new boy Chancel Mbemba made their debut bows, whilst Rolando Aarons, Siem de Jong and Ayoze Perez picked up valuable pitch time.

After the match, the Magpies manager suggested that the pre-season schedule has hindered his side’s evolution as they adjust to his tactical approach:

“We lost a week two weeks ago with travelling in the States and playing a game on astroturf. We are trying to get that back and recover from the travel. I am delighted where the players are considering that schedule. Do we need to do more? Lots more. We have to be patient. It’s a word I don’t like but you can’t force things but I am pleased with the development with the team have made.”

Norwich City 2 Brentford 1

The Canaries triumphed in their final summer friendly thanks to goals from Wes Hoolahan and fit-again Cameron Jerome. Alex Neil named John Ruddy in goal, with a defence comprising of Steven Whittaker, Russell Martin, Seb Bassong and Robbie Brady, who was fielded at left-back on his debut. Jonny Howson, Youssouf Mulumbu, Graham Dorrans and Bradley Johnson started in midfield, with Hoolahan tucked in behind Lewis Grabban up top.

Brady was handed a share of dead-ball duties, whilst fellow summer signing Andre Wisdom made an instant impact, emerging from the bench to provide the assist for fellow-sub Jerome’s sixth pre-season strike.

Post-match, Neil took time out to praise the displays of his two new signings:

“Robbie has great quality in his left foot, and is flexible in terms of where he can play along that flank. He had a good delivery for us to go and attack, but also has great stamina. He’s not had a huge amount of game-time over pre-season but certainly looked fit today. If you look at Andre’s size and stature, he’s a big boy, and you need that in the Premier League. Unfortunately he only got 30 minutes today, but once we get the two of them up to speed they’ll be fine – it was a fantastic pass from him for Cameron’s goal.”

The Canaries boss also rolled out an injury update on Mulumbu, who was forced off with ten minutes remaining:

“We’re hoping he’s going to be ok but these kind of things normally take 24 hours to settle it down. We’ll get it scanned tonight if we can and then we’ll find out the extent, if there is an injury there. It’s on the outside of his foot so we’re hoping he’s going to be available for the next game.”

Hannover 0 Sunderland 1

Jeremain Lens and Costel Pantilimon were the star performers as the Black Cats registered a 1-0 win over their German hosts. The Dutchman fired the only goal of the match late in the second period, whilst Pantilimon made a number of saves, including a last-minute penalty stop.

Dick Advocaat named new signings Seb Coates and Younes Kaboul in central defence, with Billy Jones and Patrick van Aanholt completing the four-man backline. Lee Cattermole, Jack Rodwell and Seb Larsson were stationed in central midfield, with a front three of Adam Johnson, Jermain Defoe and Lens. Steven Fletcher missed out through injury, whilst Connor Wickham played no part ahead of his expected move to Palace.

After the match, the Dutchman praised his side’s defensive display after the Wearsiders earned their first clean sheet of a six-match pre-season:

“We can see some things during the game that we have to improve, but we have a week to do that. That’s what we have to work on, making the team better. We didn’t give a lot of chances away today, which was a positive, but we still have to work on pressurising the ball earlier.”

Stuttgart 4 Manchester City 2

Devoid of their Copa America contingent, in addition to the absence of Yaya Toure and Fernando in the centre of the park, City were turned over before a late Raheem Sterling-inspired rally clawed back half the four-goal deficit.

Manuel Pellegrini enlisted plenty of experience at the back, with Joe Hart, Bacary Sagna, Vincent Kompany, Eliaquim Mangala and Aleksandar Kolarov all amongst the starters. In midfield, young George Evans joined the likes of David Silva, Sterling, Samir Nasri and Jesus Navas, with Wilfried Bony leading the line in his first pre-season outing.

Whilst City’s dire defensive display will deter many, Sterling’s star is on the rise – the youngster supplied assists for Edin Dzeko and Kelechi Iheanacho in an otherwise disappointing performance.

Swansea City 0 Deportivo La Coruna 0

The Swans finished their summer schedule unbeaten after a goalless draw at the Liberty. Garry Monk’s side went close on a number of occasions, with Andre Ayew, Jonjo Shelvey, Bafe Gomis and Kin Sung-Yueng all unlucky not to find the net.

Monk named Lukasz Fabianski in goal, with a back-four of Kyle Naughton, Federico Fernandez, Ashley Williams and Neil Taylor. In midfielder, Jack Cork, Ki, Jonjo Shelvey, Wayne Routledge and Andre Ayew lined up behind lone striker Bafe Gomis. Monk seems undecided over three positions and swapped a trio of players at the break – Franck Tabanou replaced Taylor, Gylfi Sigurdsson came on for Shelvey and Routledge was hauled off for Jefferson Montero as the Swans boss assesses his options ahead of next weekend’s trip to Chelsea.

After the goalless draw, Monk conceded his side are lacking bite further up the pitch, having scored just five times in as many matches over the summer:

“It’s hard what to make of the game really. We started well, we were on the front foot and should have scored when we had the momentum. The match came in spurts really but it was a good workout once again and the players got the minutes they needed. Both teams wanted to win, it was an honest game, but we just couldn’t find that killer touch in the final third. But we’ll get sharper as the week goes on and look ahead to the trip to Chelsea.”

HJK Helsinki 0 Liverpool 2

Goals from substitute Divock Origi and Philippe Coutinho – in his first outing of the summer – sealed victory for the Merseysiders yesterday evening.

Brendan Rodgers started with Simon Mignolet in goal, with a back-four of Nathaniel Clyne, Martin Skrtel, Dejan Lovren and young Joe Gomez. Jordan Henderson and James Milner lined up in the double-pivot, with Coutinho, Jordan Ibe and Adam Lallana lining up behind Danny Ings. The Reds boss switched from from 4-2-3-1 to 4-3-3 after the break, with Ibe and Lallana on either side of Ings. The in-form Milner provided the assist for both goals, though Ibe once again sparkled, particularly after Rodgers’ half-time tactical switch.

Post-match, Rodgers discussed his defensive dilemma for the season ahead. The Reds boss admitted Gomez may well start ahead of Alberto Moreno at left-back, before confirming he is undecided on whether Dejan Lovren or Mamadou Sakho will partner Martin Skrtel at centre-half:

“I wouldn’t have any issues (with playing Gomez). You’ve seen from my time here that irrespective of the age of a player, it’s about the quality and personality. Whether they are 17 or 27, if I think they are ready, I’ll play them….It’s not something I’ve totally decided upon yet (playing Sakho or Lovren). I’ll sit down with the staff and we’ll look at it next week. The key is getting consistency in that area of the field. Your two centre-halves are critical. They are the tactical decision makers in the game. That balance is important for us this season. We had too many defensive changes last year and that’s not something that I like. Hopefully this season we’ll be more consistent as a back four.”

    Is a GW2 WC a viable strategy?

    We'll know starting XIs
    And hence bargain defenders/mids
    Aguero will be back
West Brom's fixtures may now warrant defensive investment
West Ham, Swansea, Spurs now have terrific fixtures (Terrible GW1s)
Transfer activity is usually very high after GW1 - price rise gains?
It would allow arguably the most efficient use of the AOA chip: http://i.imgur.com/lhsx9Dd.png?1 (Will likely have a 4.5->5.5m fifth mid for the rest of the season and hence only 2-3pt profit from the chip)

Why not just start from GW2...you will still finish with a great rank..you will know everything...and will have a WC in hand

Would be starting around 60 points down, a wildcard isn't worth that.

This. You could take 8 hits in GW2 and still be better off than starting late.

I've seen people attempt this. You're banking on a low scoring GW1 though!

Some people don't even need a WC in the first half of the season, they're overrated imo 🙂

I don't think there are DGWs in the first half of the season. Unless snow...

Using that tactic would set you back in GW1. It all depends how high scoring it is...

            A gamble no doubt.

When SpiderMatt did it, Chelsea had a DGW1 and a blank in GW3, so it was a special case.

And his rival was still ahead of him well before Christmas, having not yet played his own wildcard.

SpiderMatt won because of his superior play in the latter part of the season, not because of his GW2 wildcard.

Maybe his superior play in the latter stages was down to having a bigger budget to play with off the back of his early wildcard?
Just a thought, I've not a clue what his team value was compared to his rivals

In 2012-13, SpiderMatt included 6 Chelsea and Reading players for DGW1 in his initial squad and then played his wildcard in GW2 to replace 5 of them, but the Reading players did not score well.

Kelvin Travers, the runner-up, had a very strong initial squad but only 4 DGWers. Ivanovic, Hazard, Torres, Michu and Petric all scored well for him in GW1 and he was ahead of SpiderMatt for most of the season.

Kelvin played his main wildcard in GW24 only two GWs after his January Wildcard in DGW22 in a deliberate attempt to take advantage of the DGW and then restore his team, but I think it was a mistake not to have held on to it a bit longer, and he made a few more towards the end.

SpiderMatt won because he made fewer late mistakes, not because of his greater team value (if it was greater - it may not have been, because Kelvin's squad would also have gained value since it was so strong right from the start).

http://www.fiso.co.uk/viewarticle.php?id=535 (How Matt won FPL 2012-13)

I've just been re-reading Matt's own detailed account about how he won FPL.

He doesn't make any mention of how his team value compared to his rivals, so we can't tell whether it was bigger than theirs or not.

It was a real dog-fight going into the final game-week, with only 9 points separating the top six players. GW38 was his only week at number one, but he had been close to the top for a while.

I think it was a combination of luck and skill that won it for him, although if he did have a slightly bigger budget than his rivals then that might have helped too.

Matt changed his team name to Divine Mercy just before his pilgrimage to Medjugorje in GW38.

I have just discovered that Divine Mercy is the name of the church at Medjugorje. Perhaps someone up there likes him!

If it's planned in advance to make the best out of the AOA-chip then it's poor planning?

        Interesting.

Yes. It's poor planning. The AOA chip is virtually worthless anyway. Using a wildcard to maximise it is wasting a wildcard (which does have significant value unlike the chip).

Exactly what I'm doing. People on this site think it's stupid but I think it's smart. We can get maximum points from GW1 and know all the details for GW2+

However I'm using the Bench Boost chip instead so I'm going to have 15 playing players who'll all (hopefully) rack some points 🙂

Arguably the worst time for the Bench Boost, because your budget is so limited, and the cheapies may not be 100% nailed on.

Agreed. Bench boost would absolutely kill during a DGW. Imagine having 15 DGW players (e.g WC'ing the week before, then immediately playing the chip the following week).

If you play a WC the week before a DGW then a lot of the DGW players will have no game so you would have a weak side in the GW in which you actually play the wildcard

      Too early.

You can plan to play that chip in GW1 without needing to w/c in GW2.

WC GW2 is the only way to get the max out of it though, with ultra cheap defense.

When do you plan to use it?

Defenders get pts in DGWs too, so I can't see a huge benefit then...

I plan to use it in GW1. That has been my plan for 3 weeks. But it doesn't require a GW2 wildcard.

There is also merit in saving it to cover a defensive crisis. But less so for me as my long-term structure will be 4-3-3 or 4-4-2.

Pretty good strategy. I'll give it some thought. I'd like major reworking for GW2 though...

                  OK, that AOA chip...

First of all it doesn't need an ultra cheap defence. 7.0 6.0 4.5 4.5 4.0 or something like that would be perfectly fine. You still have to play 2 defenders and they still score points.

Second, it just needs 8 attackers that you are happy to start. They don't have to be (all) big hitters, just players with good fixtures that you are confident will actually play and have decent points potential.

Setting this up in GW1 is relatively easy. You just then need to plan changes to include an early downgrade of a midfielder to 4.5 so you can use the cash elsewhere. For instance if you started with Costa and Cabaye you could be looking to switch to Aguero and Surman in time for GW4.

There is therefore no need for a GW2 wildcard. I plan to use mine in the first international break (before GW5), by which time I will have a fair idea about starting lineups, the transfer window will be closed (late transfers could create bargains) and I can also be protected against international injuries.

That seems like a better strategy to me. Your basic idea seems good but I just think you are going too ultra with it.

I don't think planning an early WC is ever a good idea. If you can get your team right early on and avoid using it, it can be much more valuable in Feb when weather wreaks havoc.

Well, we won't know starting XIs for sure, and the Aguero point is debatable (could start GW1, might not start GW2)... the WBA/West Ham/Swansea/Spurs thing isn't enough to sell it to me as there aren't many players I'm mad keen on from those squads anyway, not enough to justify the GW2 wildcard.

BUT the All Out Attack thing in GW1 is super-flair. You've tempted me, you devil!

I'm benching Williams and Jenkinson, Costa to Benteke gw2 will give a gw2 captain option and have Aguero money itb, that's the plan but will probably end up wildcarding anyway

We're already close enough to knowing starting elevens. Line-ups aren't fixed after GW1 anyway.
Aguero will be back... and playing Chelsea.
WBrom DEFs can start on the bench GW1 anyway if you want them. Likewise anyone else you want with a tough first game.

I'll concede on price rises 🙂

We have 3 WCs, one in January, one all year long and one now. Why wasting the latter for one GW? I would rather take a hit or double hit to change 2-3 players, the rest must be ok most of the times.

Its a definite possibility. Another option that people are overlooking is different way of looking at the points gained from it. Most folk are looking at it as way of gaining a few extra points, but those extra points can also buy you transfers for making much needed team changes - early in the season this can be invaluable (a speculate to accumulate scenario if you will). Its much more flexible than most are thinking. (I probably shouldnt be saying this here!)

This is why a good early set up is so key. The value gains, the transfers saved, and a more optimum setup resonates throughout the whole season!

A little bit of RMT thoughts would be great, folks:

        Butland / Ruddy / Azpilicueta / Koscielny / Huth / Williams / PVA

        Sterling / Fabregas / Ozil / Henderson / Ritchie / Rooney / Sakho / Lukaku

I'm thinking Lukaku to Pelle in time for GW2 and also wondering:

        (1) if Ivanovic is worth the additional 1M on Azpilicueta, (2) if there is a better 4.5M/5M option than Williams, (3) if it is mad to go with Fabregas (and, thus better overall balance) ahead of Hazard and (4) if Ritchie and Sakho is the best 5th midfielder/3rd forward rotating pair.

Thoughts or advice from the experts would be grand,

        > We'll know starting XIs

You'll know the starting XI for GW1. How many managers will be certain about their teams after one GW?! This is the time of the season when people are competing for places most.

        > And hence bargain defenders/mids

See above. Weeks remaining of the transfer window. Your bargain defenders/mids are those most at risk of being replaced.

        > Aguero will be back

With one of the worst fixtures of the season. Not WC-worthy.

        > West Brom's fixtures may now warrant defensive investment

If you want one, just bench one GW1.

        > West Ham, Swansea, Spurs now have terrific fixtures (Terrible GW1s)

Again, just get them through GW1. I'd argue WHM and SWA aren't WC-worthy. Even Spurs, is anyone that exciting other than Kane? Is there anyone you'd WC for?

        > Transfer activity is usually very high after GW1 - price rise gains?

Not sure, you might be right. We don't know what will happen with prices though. And you have one day less - Friday deadline. People forgetting? And Friday transfers (i.e. the majority) won't be included in your WC's rises.

        > It would allow arguably the most efficient use of the AOA chip: http://i.imgur.com/lhsx9Dd.png?1

It would, but again... not sure you need a WC for this. http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2015/07/31/the-numbers-game-201415-review-pulis-west-brom/?hc_page=13#hc_comment_10668021

.... tl;dr? Agree to disagree. I'm not 100% on every point, but there's enough doubt there to make the GW2 WC a bad idea imo.

Interesting. We'll get a much better idea over XIs anyway. There are a huge amount of players I want for GW2, but not GW1. Kane is quite a crucial one, and a lot of my defence.

Chelsea got 11 CSs at home last season, and only 6 away. CHE isn't as bad as it looks. +Kun is fixture proof.

Kun + Kane in could be crucial.

            • 10 Years
            8 years, 9 months ago

Yeah, a better idea but not perfect. I don't mean to be so negative about the idea.. it is an interesting one. It's more that it's just not for me - not saying it couldn't work, because you've obviously though it through.

WHM,SWA and TOT aren't massively of interest to me, but if you're interested in them, this strategy makes more sense.

In terms of CHE, I don't think not having Aguero will be too painful. Apart from Spurs away, just check out Chelsea vs the big teams. Maybe not CSs, but they tighten up massively.

I hope it works out for you, & good luck with it - but not for me! 🙂

If you get it right its a great strategy to get you off to a flyer.

But i dont think 1 week provides enough time or information to make the right choices. Our knowledge will have only progressed a week from where we are now with our unlimited choices. Takes a few weeks for the new patterns to establish and team sheets to settle.

So most likely there will be too many mistakes and then we stuck with it.

I think it's a very viable option. You can make full use of an otherwise underpowered AOO chip. You can have Targett as one of your 2 defenders knowing he will play.

The main reason though is that it will be the best time to use the wildcard to cash in on early bandwagons so you will basically be starting the season with at least 0.5M extra budget at a time it is most useful. That's got to be worth an extra 10-15 pts over the course of the season alone.

If you wait until Wk 4 or 5 when lots of people will be using their WCs the prices may not move as much as some casuals may have already lost interest and WC transfers may not count towards player price changes.

I've considered it myself but was put off by there not being enough obviously one-sided fixtures. It's definitely not a stupid strategy though.

It's a pretty daft idea I think. You've started the season with basically a wildcard, then a week later you want to reset. If your judgment is that bad you're not gonna do very well. I would say at the start of the season to make sure your players will play and then introduce new ones based on form, possibly double transfers. Dont jettison those players you've researched after one gameweek! Pure folly!

O'Shea, Francis, Sterling, Walcott, Pelle, Wilson and arguably Hazard. Hazard is very debatable but I don't think he'll be Chelsea's best captain option and he's no value otherwise. That's why I said 6 or 7, the Hazard thing could go either way.

The FFS template is notoriously successful. Moreover, the template is itself a differential, as basic maths will tell you. Can't see what would garner such a low rating, there are no holes nor weaknesses.

I play to win my cash leagues, and finishing in the top 5k is usually good enough to win 'em - and if you follow the FFS template you're pretty much guaranteed a top 0.01% finish, which satisfies that.

Team planning and management plays a big role in this game. You can start with the best team but where will you be at GW38 without the skill.

Nice, almost exactly the same team as me except Francis is Targett (WC GW4), Wilson is Deeney (much of a muchness) and Fletcher is Bentaleb (meh)

Not sure about O'Shea starting but can't decide which Sun DFer to choose and keep your eyes on Walcott tonight. If he doesnt start then need to have a plan B (probably Depay for me)

I like the team similar to mine.

        Butland | Ruddy

        Kos | Cedric | Francis | Huth | O’Shea

        Haz | Ozil | Mane | Ritchie | Fletcher

        Pelle | Rooney | Sakho

Rooney > Aguero when Aguero fit

I went Kos over Azpi for the goal treat and double Soton as the fixtures are great -Pelle had a great start last season. Any plans for Aguero or early WC?

        good luck!

As in, I think Kane is decent - however, gut feel says he will not repeat last season. So, this then means 352 and playing Mahrez on the regs - which in itself is risky.

Likewise, Benteke is risk for playing / adapting - as is Wilson due to being new.

Which team has a higher chance of keeping a Clean Sheet in GW1?

      A) Man Utd (v Spurs at home)

      B) Man City (v West Brom away)

Thoughts on the below? I have gone for both Hazard and Fabregas, the former is essential whilst the latter is possibly the most reliable source of points other than Hazard imo.

Sterling is my punt, will see how that goes.

      Schwarzer - Schmeichel

      Lescott - Shawcross - Williams - OShea - Targett

      Hazard - Fabregas - Cazorla - Sterling - Wanyama

      Rooney - Kane - Deeney

Good team, but honestly from a Stoke fan I can still see us leaking goals and ShawX has back problems and hasn't featured much in preseason.

It should be Iheanacho but could be Sterling. Bony has only played 45 minutes of pre season, he is not match fit yet and Id be very surprised if he started against West Brom.

      Rooney/Pelle/Wilson

Against Villa? Possibly. Say what you like about Sherwoods defence, but he did get villa attacking better last season.

If they get through could we be looking at rotation risks with europa Thursday/Sunday turnarounds and Valencia being very crocked. Thinking about it bar Carroll who do they have up top is Carlton Cole stil there?

I've gone for this team. It's the least I've ever liked my starting squad. I can't work out why or how to alleviate that feeling despite a number of changes. Anyone?

      Cech
      Huth - Cédric - Azpilicueta
      Mané - Hazard - Milner - Walcott
      Rooney - Lukaku - Sakho

        Bench?

I have a team to cover both GW1 and GW2 hence I have avoided Luka (Everton poor fixtures from GW2 onward). I went Kos over Azpi for the goal threat - but you have Cech. Perhaps downgrade Cech to a 4.5m and do Azpi > Kos - saves 1.0m to upgrade Luka after GW1.

Morning. I wanted to ask you, would you go with rotating GKs for a draft league (Pantilimon + Krul)? It's 9th round now and I have Panti already. Should I get Krul also or forget him and look for outfield picks? (Smalling and Jones are still free, weird)
