Aston Villa’s summer of restructuring continued on Friday afternoon with the acquisition of striker Rudy Gestede from Blackburn Rovers. The 26-year-old becomes the club’s ninth new face of the summer transfer window as Tim Sherwood strengthens up front following the departure of Christian Benteke to Liverpool.

Discussing his move with the club’s official website, Gestede cited the Villains’ attack-minded approach under Sherwood as key to his decision:

”The manager told me I’d bring another dimension to the team because of my size and the way I play. He trusts me and I felt comfortable to sign as I knew he wanted me here. It’s good to be part of his new set-up. He’s still relatively new himself and trying to refresh the team. He’s brought in a lot of new players and I’m thrilled to be a part of it. I love the way his teams attack and play on the front foot. For a striker, I’m going to have chances to score goals. That’s all you want.”

The History

Brought up in Essey-les-Nancy, France, Gestede joined FC Metz’ youth academy at the age of 16, penning a professional deal one year later. He played for their B team for the next five years while notching three goals in 28 appearances for the senior outfit. A season-long loan spell to Cannes for the 2009/10 campaign harvested four goals in 22 outings, before Cardiff City snapped him up in the summer of 2011.

Gestede struggled to impart his influence during his debut term with the Bluebirds, bagging just one goal and three assists across 25 appearances (five starts). An injury that summer found him sidelined for the opening two months of the 2012/13 Championship season. Upon his return, Gestede played second fiddle to the likes of Craig Bellamy and Heidar Helguson, mustering a modest haul of five goals and three assists in 27 appearances (five starts).

In an attempt to secure more regular playing time, Gestede joined Blackburn Rovers on loan in November 2013. He then signed a permanent deal with the Lancashire club in January, before going on to record 13 goals and three assists in 27 outings. His fine form carried over to the previous campaign, when he chalked up 20 goals and four assists in 39 appearances, ranking joint-fourth in the league-wide scoring charts.

On the international stage, Gestede represented France U19s on 17 occasions between 2006-08 but never turned out for the senior side. Called up by Benin in 2013, he has since scored three times in six appearances.

The Prospects

Speaking on Gestede’s arrival at Villa Park, Sherwood lauded the 26-year-old for his eye-catching attacking output last term:

“I’ve known about Rudy since he was at Cardiff City and he is a player I’ve always admired. His goalscoring ratio last season was fantastic and he is someone who certainly knows how to find the back of the net. He’s a big, physical striker but he can play and I’m pleased to welcome him to the football club.”

The former Spurs head coach was clearly in the market for an imposing frontman to fill the niche vacated by Christian Benteke, who won more aerial duels (187) than any other frontman in the Premier League last season. Certainly, Gestede looks the ideal replacement –over the last two seasons, no player in the top four levels of English football has netted more goals from headers.

Villa’s wide men could well prosper from Gestede’s introduction to the starting XI. The likes of Leandro Bacuna (5.0) – who’s classified as a defender but has been fielded on the right flank in pre-season – already piqued our interest with his out-of-position potential and could further profit from the new boy’s arrival. The former Netherlands U21 international ranked second (18) behind Ashley Westwood (23) among Villa’s midfield for crosses, despite clocking only 1044 minutes. With a cross frequency of one every 15.3 minutes, Bacuna could the perfect foil for the ex-Blackburn marksman.

That being said, the possible recruitment of Emmanuel Adebayor offers Sherwood an alternative to Gestede and with Libor Kozak also in the mix, the Villa boss has target man alternatives. Given that Sherwood has utilised 4-3-3 and 4-4-1-1 set-ups over the summer, Gestede has the physical attributes to lead the line as a lone striker, though the Villa boss has also trialled a 4-4-2, which could see fellow new boy Jordan Ayew offer plenty of pace and movement alongside a more robust strike partner up front. Like Ayew, Gabriel Agbonlahor can also operate on the flanks but will perhaps be limited to minutes off the bench in light of Sherwood’s squad overhaul.

Sherwood’s penchant for attacking football may well promote Villa’s main men as viable value options for the season ahead. A weekend hat-trick from Scott Sinclair (5.0 in FPL) has many mulling over his inclusion in our midfields, and if Gestede nail down a starting berth, he may also stake a claim for our Fantasy consideration. Likely to come in around 6.0 – the same as Ayew – in FPL, the former Blackburn hit man has six favourable fixtures (bou, cpl, SUN, lei, WBA, STOK) in the first eight Gameweeks to ease him into his new surrounds.

After listening to some constructive inputs, i will probably do a swap from Benteke/Tadic to Pelle/Hendo.

This will allow me to have 0.5m for another switch which I have been tinkering with.
Any opinions are much appreciated between this two combinations!!

    A) Kosc and Azp (12m)
    B) Mert and Ivan (12.5m)

Which would you choose and why? Thanks for the input!

Perhaps. Looking at last year I remember feeling that he was showing much greater determination to score goals and to register 12 in a poor City side was a great effort.

Sterling is the low-hanging fruit at 9 but I seem to remember Hazard starting poor-average last year (I stand to be corrected) and what with his anonymity yesterday I am struggling to part with 11.5 so Silva may just be a placeholder until I see some form, if I go that way. Sterling will remain under consideration too

I know Ivan outdoes Azpi in terms of attacking.

You think the baps are worth the extra 0.5?

Cedric and Bellerin have attacking threat too.

You've spent more than me then.

        Fabianski, Henessey
        Ivanovic, Mertesaker, Cedric, Huth, Murner.

I've kept £0.5m in bank in case I need to upgrade one of Ritchie, Chadli or Vardy.

Same here but I really like Swansea defence.

I have Kun, Pellé and Vardy up front but I keep swapping between Vardy and Sakho. Ranieri worries me.

Yes - I may get Williams instead of Fonte, if that is the case. Saves me 1.0

That's what made me go to Fabianski.

In fairnes, up to GW13 Leicester have decent games nearly every week. Schmeichel is good for save points.

I also have had Schmeichel and Schwarzer which is Leicester GK every week. That's actually decent if not wwildcarding untill after GW10.

    @Lucy

I saw your post yesterday, re: Southampton attacking coverage.

So you would go mane over Pelle?

I need to revamp my forwards, but by putting Pelle in I can get Depay on midfield for Mane.

I would welcome your thoughts please.

    Hi Lads,

Why hasn't Payet been mentioned in many teams? I have him in my squad but may go for Milner to save some coin and based on the pre season results. West Ham have a good early run and being an attacking midfielder I think he may post a few points early. Milner has been great with attacking returns in pre-season but I wonder if he will drop a little deeper when Coutinho and Firmino come into the team. I cant see them playing too wide with Benteke up top. So back to my original question, is Payet really worth the punt from the start?

    Thanks

It's the price tag I think. I've seen many comments saying he looks a decent prospect. But, he's unproven and sitting at 7.5, there are lots of proven options .5 less/more.

A lot of people are probably considering him for GW2 because the game against Arsenal in GW1 should be a hard one.

Fair point. Think i'll also wait and see. I have gone strong on the midfield this season. I don't know who to drop if I do decide to go with Payet. Ritchie is also someone who is tempting with the early fixtures and his goals and assists from last season.

        Mid's: Walcott / Ozil / Milner / Mane / Sterling

Walcott has always scored well in Fantasy over the years and this season will hopefully start up front. If Arsenal purchase Benzema I will change for Silva or Ritchie and get some coin in the bank. Ozil gets his proffered position in behind the striker and according to Wenger will have a good year and hopefully score 10 goals. Milner says he is one of the best mid's in the game and his pre season has been good. Mane is getting forward a lot and has been great in pre season and his good run of fixtures and second season I think he will be more consistent. Sterling has stepped right into the team with goals and assists. Integral part of City who seem to score a lot of goals

If you have Sakho as well then it could either brilliant or disaster. I really like the look of Payet but it's a calculated punt and I haven't yet decided.

    I'm done!

    Schmeichel | Fabianksi

Azpilicueta | Koscielny | van Aanholt | Huth | Targett

    Hazard | Ozil | Milner | Mahrez | Ki

    Rooney | Lukaku | Sakho

    2.0 ITB

Mahrez and Ki rotate perfectly for 10+ GWs, I'll await news on Lukaku then ship for Kane (or another striker who hits form early) and if the Mahrez / Ki rotation doesnt' work I've got funds for an upgrade there.

He's a rotator for me ... I think he'll be undervalued again and will return some attacking points. I also think that Sunderland will tidy up their back half very quickly!

Looks good. Covered all basis. Mahrez I like the look of. Ki had a top year but unsure about certainty every game week. Lukaku I would get rid of, games are tough straight up and the injury even though isn't meant to be too serious puts a little doubt over him. I do rate Lukaku though. My opinion is to trade for Benteke or Pelle. Pelle has had a great pre season and have some favourable games. This wont damage your bank account either.

Triple Arse and Chelski is interesting, but could work. My concern is your defence - Targett may play GW1 only, at best, and Prodl maybe not at all. That leaves you stuck with Mings playing every week and possibly being on the end of the odd massacre.

Shouldn't be avoiding Liverpool players considering they face Stoke, Arsenal & Man United all away in 3 of first 5 games & a also a home trip to West Ham not that easy..only a GW 2 fixture of Bournemouth at home seems promising..so doesn't it seem odd that Clyne ownership is above 40% & people are going crazy over Benteke when teams with better fixtures & options are available..cough Southampton attack Sunderland def..cough!!

I'm with you. Benteke scored an amazing goal and people jump on him. He will be a good player I have no doubt but he only recently joined the team and may take a while to fit in and tough fixtures as you said. There are better options then Benteke at this stage. i.e Southampton = Pelle

You won't captain him if he's yellow flagged and Mourinho hasn't said anything, in fact he won't be in your team if there is the slightest of doubt that you will waste 11m on your bench from GW 1.
