Scout Notes – Pre-Season Round Up – Sunday

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain fires Arsenal to victory over Chelsea in the Community Shield. Diego Costa is a doubt for Chelsea’s opener at home to Swansea. Christian Benteke announces his arrival at Liverpool in style. Jay Rodriguez earns Southampton a draw with Espanyol, whilst Diafra Sakho scores as West Ham lose to Werder Bremen.

Arsenal 1 Chelsea 0

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain extended the Gunners’ pre-season winning streak to five matches with a searing strike into the top corner. The jet-heeled wide man cut in from the right flank and glided past Cesar Azpilicueta, before unleashing a rising strike beyond the reach of Thibaut Courtois.

Arsenal lined up in a 4-1-4-1 formation, with Petr Cech in goal and a rearguard comprised of Hector Bellerin, Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny and Nacho Monreal. Francis Coquelin shielded the defence, allowing Santi Cazorla and Oxlade-Chamberlain to patrol the flanks, with Aaron Ramsey and Mesut Ozil providing support to lone striker Theo Walcott in the centre of the park. Jack Wilshere missed out with an ankle injury, which Wenger said he’ll recover from in a “matter of days”.

In addition to leading the line, Walcott also provided the assist for the Gunners’ only goal before making way for Olivier Giroud on 66 minutes – somewhat disconcerting for those Fantasy managers who are considering handing him the armband for the Gameweek 1 home clash with West Ham.

Discussing the situation up front following his maiden triumph over Jose Mourinho, Wenger admitted his selection will be determined by the set-up of Arsenal’s opponents:

“It depends on the games. I tried to see the options I have through the season. I felt today that I wanted to use Theo’s pace to go in behind. In the first half he worked very hard, didn’t get too much service, but he worked very hard. In the second half when Giroud came on I think he gave us a physical presence that was needed at that time as well.”

Despite enjoying the lion’s share of the possession, the Blues were unable to breach Arsenal’s resilient back line. Ramires spurned a golden opportunity to equalise, directing an unmarked header wide of the upright from six yards out.

Mourinho deployed his troops in a 4-2-3-1 set-up, with Courtois in between the sticks and a back four of Branislav Ivanovic, Gary Cahill, John Terry and Azpilicueta. Ramires and Nemanja Matic partnered up in central midfield, while Eden Hazard (left wing), Cesc Fabregas (number ten) and Willian (right wing) supplied the ammunition for lone frontman Loic Remy.

A reshuffle occurred midway through the first 45, with Fabregas dropping back to the double pivot, Willian shifting across to operate in “the hole” and Ramires pushing up to the right flank. Radamel Falcao made his debut in the second half but didn’t offer much of a goal threat.

Diego Costa failed to recover from the hamstring knock he picked up against Barcelona earlier in the week. Mourinho conceded he is unsure if the Spain international will be available for Chelsea’s opener against Swansea:

“Will Costa be fit for Swansea? I don’t know. You think I’m lying, but I’m not. Two days ago he was ready to play. He trained normally on Friday, and yesterday at the end of the training session he said he was not feeling good. Falcao will have had a bit more football, he will play against Fiorentina (on Wednesday) from the start. We have Remy too, so if we don’t have Diego I am happy with the strikers I have.”

Swindon Town 1 Liverpool 2

Christian Benteke opened his account for the Reds in style by lashing home a long-range volley on his debut yesterday. Substitute Sheyi Ojo – on for another debutant, Roberto Firmino – grabbed the winner late on.

Brendan Rodgers named a number of his first-team squad in the starting XI. The likes of Kolo Toure, Mamadou Sakho, Alberto Moreno, Lucas, Emre Can, Lazar Markovic, and Joe Allen joined Firmino and Benteke in the starting line-up, with the latter two both earning 67 minutes before being replaced.

Despite the fact that yesterday was his first appearance of the summer, Benteke could yet start the Reds’ Gameweek 1 trip to Stoke next Sunday, according to his manager. Rodgers was a little more cautious with Firmino, however:

“I’ll know by the end of the week (if Benteke will start). Considering he has only been back in training for just over a week, I thought he looked really good. He looked fairly sharp and he was a real presence for us at the top of the field. I was really impressed by him…Benteke is further down the line than Firmino is. That was clear to see. Playing in the role Firmino is in, down the middle and round the sides, you need a lot of fitness in that position. You need to gauge the players and that’s the first time we have seen them in a game situation. But they are obviously a number of weeks behind the other players. You can still see their quality and when they get that fitness, they are going to be a creative force.”

Rodgers played down any suggestions that Firmino picked up a knock during yesterday’s outing. The Reds boss – who trialled the Brazilian in all of the attacking midfield positions behind Benteke in a 4-2-3-1 – conceded he’s looking to build up the player’s fitness:

“Firmino is fine. I just think he overstretched a little bit and took a knock. We are just managing his minutes and I thought he did very well. I was impressed with his positivity. You can see he wants to create when he’s on the ball and he works hard. What was pleasing for me is that when we were in and around the box, we looked a threat.”

Everton 1 Villareal 2

Second-half substitute Tyias Browning netted a late consolation goal for the Toffees in Duncan Ferguson’s testimonial send-off. Notwithstanding the sentimentality of the fixture, Roberto Martinez named a strong line-up, with Tim Howard keeping guard behind a defence of Seamus Coleman, Phil Jagielka, John Stones and Leighton Baines. James McCarthy and Gareth Barry occupied the double pivot in a 4-2-3-1, while Kevin Mirallas, Leon Osman and Tom Cleverley (number ten) formed the trio behind striker Arouna Kone.

Romelu Lukaku was rested following his injury scare against Dundee United, while Ross Barkley and Steven Naismith entered the fray as substitutes. Both Mirallas and John Stones picked up knocks against the La Liga outfit, yet Martinez was quick to allay any fears after the final whistle:

“We’ll assess them in the next 48 hours. But I don’t expect it to be anything too serious.”

Martinez also revealed he’s determined to strengthen in three positions before the end of the transfer window, with the Toffees boss particularly keen on acquiring a new playmaker:

“We know we need two to three new players and we are going to make sure we get the right ones. We are looking for that area [up front], the number 10 position, and I think we need a centre-half; the three areas are quite clear…They (number tens) aren’t players that are easy to find. You want players with great vision and technical ability but who can also cope with the physicality of the league. I do feel we need to use the full window and try to bring the right people. We have got a clear idea of what we want to do.”

Southampton 1 Espanyol 1

Gracing the St Mary’s pitch for the first time since March 2014, Jay Rodriquez scored a 25-yard belter five minutes from time. Steven Caulker made his Southampton bow alongside Jose Fonte in central defence, with Cuco Martina and Matt Targett deployed in the full-back berths. Victor Wanyama and James Ward-Prowse patrolled the midfield, while Shane Long, Juanmi and Rodriquez provided the firepower behind lone marksman Graziano Pelle. Sadio Mane, Dusan Tadic and Maya Yoshida were handed run-outs in the second period.

Koeman was complimentary about Rodriquez’s display but admitted that the forward won’t be in his first XI for the Gameweek 1 trip to Newcastle as he continues to build up his match sharpness:

“To start yes (the season has come too soon). Already the Premier League is too fast, yes. It was his first time back in St Mary’s, a long time ago for Jay. He scored a great goal, he was playing 90 minutes and in moments of the game you see he still needs more minutes, more rhythm of play, and it’s normal because he was a long time out and he gets that time and that opportunity to come back what we expect from Jay.”

The Dutchman also revealed that Jordy Clasie could be available for Saints’ trip to Newcastle United in Gameweek 1 after scans came up negative for hamstring damage:

“It’s positive. It looks positive. He’s not really out for a long time and maybe he will be available next week but we have to wait for that.”

Stoke City 0 Porto 3

Mark Hughes named an entirely different XI from that which fell to defeat against Cologne on Saturday, with Bojan Krkic handed further minutes after returning from injury last week. On the flip side, Marko Arnautovic and Marc Wilson exited the field with fresh knocks.

Hughes gave an update on club captain Ryan Shawcross, who’s struggling with an ongoing back complaint ahead of next weekend’s curtain raiser at home to Liverpool:

“As we all know, Ryan has got an issue with his back which he is going to get checked out this week. Obviously it isn’t resolving itself, so he will see a specialist early this week and hopefully we can gain more information following that meeting. He hasn’t had too much game time and he has been struggling in training also, so we need to get it sorted once and for all.”

West Ham United 1 Werder Bremen 2

Diafra Sakho scored the Hammers’ solitary goal, with Dimitri Payet serving up the low cross for the Senegal international to volley home. Slaven Bilic afforded minutes to 20 players as West Ham gear up for the second leg of their Europa League qualifying match against Astra Giurgiu on Thursday. James Tomkins assumed right-back duty in the second half, which suggests Bilic could deploy him there against Arsenal in the absence of the injured Joey O’Brien and ineligible Carl Jenkinson.

After the match, goal scorer Sakho heaped praise on the Hammers new playmaker Payet and is optimistic the pair can strike up a deadly partnership over the course of the upcoming campaign:

“He always creates goals, whether that’s for me on Sunday or Valencia last time. He’s always there to give those assists. I think he’d prefer to give the passes than even score his own goals and we’re there to take advantage of it. If you have a player like him, you’ve got to make the most of it and try to score as many goals as possible. I hope that’s the first assist and he’s going to have plenty more.”

Worth downgradeing Sakho to Wilson so I could get Azpi for Jenkinson?

What's the rest of your DEF? Surely another way you could work a CHE defender in?

        Merte / Jenks and 3 x4.5

Only other way would be Tekkers and Mane to Pelle and Milner but that not probably worth it.

          Difficult - you must have a decent front 8. I wouldn't do Tekkers/Mane to Pelle/Milner.

Okay guys, I'm breaking the meta.

    Here's my team:

    Pantilimon
    Cédric, Mertesacker, Azpilicueta
    Depay, Mané, Sterling, Hazard, Özil
    Wilson, Benteke

    Subs: Rudd, Sakho, Huth, Turner

Before you start flaming my 3-5-2 or lack of Pig, here me out:

    i) I have a rotation of Wilson and Sakho, due to Wilson's tasty home fixtures and Sakho's awful away fixtures, giving me AVL, LEI, BOU, LEI, NEW, NOR, WAT, cpl etc.

ii) I'm essentially trading Pelle for Mane, who I think is a better player, far more lively and exciting to own.

iii) Similar to my reasoning for ii), I think Depay will have an amazing season, and will be the focal point of MUN's attack - Rooney is a fat has-been.

iv) For those of you who ask "Your plans for Kun?", it's simple. WC.

    Okay, tear it apart, boyos.

actually doesnt look too bad tbf! of course there is a gamble with depay - but that could pay off. I actually think Rooney will have a big season and i would be much more comfortable captaining him than the 8.5 midfielders, and that captain option is why he stays upfront in my team

  4. Can Kane Continue?

Avoid Kane at your peril! Kane's performance last season:

-Went on a run of 15 starts in which Kane recorded just three blanks and tallied 17 goals and 14 assists, not to mention an 18-point haul against Chelsea on New Years’ Day.

-Kane finished second in the scoring charts with 21 goals overall, only behind Sergio Aguero’s 26. In addition, a total of 191 points saw him end up joint-fourth alongside David Silva, with only Aguero bettering his score amongst forwards.

-Averaged 5.6 points per appearance, Kane led the league with regards to appearances in the FPL Dream Team (seven) – a feat no doubt aided by his five braces and hat-trick, giving rise to seven 10+ points hauls.

-Only Hazard was awarded more bonus points than Kane (42 vs 32) throughout the season –again, all the more impressive given he failed to start a match until Gameweek 11.

              This.

I remember arguing before the start of last season that Falcao was on a clear terminal decline (and had been even before his knee injury), the trend continued.

It was more clearly the case with Falcao than with Rooney but even so I can't see Rooney getting another 30 goal season.

Looking forward to GW1, I wouldn't be surprised if Kane outscores Rooney, he was one of the most 'fixture proof' players last season.

I feel that with Kane, it is the issue of how well the defenders have figured out his strengths and weaknesses. So for me it wait and watch for the first 2 weeks.

Kane isn't a 1 dimensional player. If you look at his goals last season you'd see that he can score a variety of them.

      I'm starting with Pelle +Rooney + Kane.

After a couple of weeks Rooney or Kane > Aguero and Pelle > Skaho.

This gives me a couple of weeks to assess the Rooney vs Kane scenario.

      absolutely.
seems nailed on, has a good injury record, should be on pens most of the time as townsend is surely bench fodder. think it will be last season's type of score again but a bit more spread out

Think he'll hit another 20 league goals this season and he's in my team. Good fixtures as well and solid captaincy option.

Last season I was a big advocate of Kane early on. I couldn't understand why it took so long for people to catch on to captaining him, he was a mini Aguero last season.

I used to say if he had been 9-10m last season people wouldn't have doubted captaining him

Now he is that price point and I'm doubting him to the point that I've barely considered him...maybe I should keep the faith. Poor end to the season last year though.

OK, we don't see eye to eye but this post says little or nothing of any value at all.

It could be summarised in one sentence: "Kane had a fantastic run in his breakthrough season". And that is something we all know. Separately adducing goals, BPs and FPL points etc is just saying the same thing in multiple ways.

Answering these questions would be more helpful:

      1. Is he likely to be able to continue with last season's incredible conversion rate for a whole season?
      2. Is he likely to be able to score so many goals from outside/edge of the box on a continuing basis?
      3. Is "2nd season syndrome" likely to catch up with him?
      4. Will teams defend differently against Spurs now they know what to expect from Kane?
      5. Was his tail-off in form towards the end of last season (last 8 games) a sign of things to come?

Answers to those might tell us whether he's likely to be good value this season at £9.5m. The original post does not.

I don't disagree with the questions you're raising but you don't need such a combative tone to get the point across.

        How about:

        [START]

Sure, Kane had a fantastic run in his breakthrough season but that's the past and we're interested in the future - can he keep it up?

        [END]

Makes the same point without being quite so personal.

I don't disagree with anything you have written either. 🙂

The "combative" tone is because I am also attempting to convey the message to Jaffalicious that listing statistics in this way in support of a conclusion they don't justify is pointless.

So I guess the problem is that I meant it the way I wrote it. 😕

Some people like to look at statistics, deal with it. Statistics lead to analysis which can ultimately generate some sort of conclusion about a particular problem.

What's the point of being overly critical?

Once again Ruth you have successfully contributed absolutely nothing to this discussion and are simply posting just to antagonise people.

I posted those facts on Kane's debut season because I wanted to generate a discussion about his prospects as I feel this is a good way of getting many people from the community involved. This ultimately led to post being a Hot Topic, allowing it to further continue as a worthwhile discussion. Kane doesn't seem to be included in many peoples' drafts and there may be plenty of users here who might be overlooking him due to one reason or another. This can easily happen when a 'template team' emerges on these forums from all the RMT's that get posted.

Instead of posting comments as though they were facts and in a way which makes you sound very arrogant and obnoxious, why don't you contribute something worthwhile to the community?

Yes, I know you don't like me. And I don't like the way you multiply and divide simple statistics that everyone has (such as goals scored) without using any judgement or discernment upon them and call it analysis. So I guess that's clear.

As for contributing something worthwhile to the community I wrote 12 articles of around 2000 words each in the summer, reviewing all 20 PL clubs. I was voted contributor of the month for them in June. I guess that would count as a worthwhile contribution?

Continuing in the spirit that you seem to approve of, I thought those articles were pointless to be honest. They were done too early (trying to be "first to the post") and so many things were bound to, and now have, change rendering them all but useless.

            🙂

That's fine. They were very useful to me and I still refer to them. Some others found them useful also. But opinions will vary. 🙂

"Trying to be "first to the post"..." Well that's your assumption. Not true as it happens but reading the motivations of others is always difficult, we so often assume their reasons for doing things are the same as ours.

I actually preferred your series of articles to the more recent Members Only ones. The latter were less readable, far too stats based for my liking, and almost entirely about last season, with little advice about the prospects for this season.

Perhaps some updates to cover the effects of players newly transferred in might be useful.

Your tone does get a bit too combative sometimes though.

Worth noting that Jaffa nor anyone else chooses to have their posts hulked, only the mods do.

Hot topics aren't necessarily always about analysis and that's the beauty of them, they can be about anything really and are usually aimed at informing and/or creating discussion which Jaffa's post has done in turn adding value (in my opinion).

Rather than criticise a post which Jaffa didn't choose to have hulked you could have just asked the questions which you think would have offered better value, in turn creating further discussion?

I know people don't choose for their posts to be hulked, Andy, I have run into trouble myself with that in the past.

Nevertheless, if you are going to make a statement like "avoid Kane at your peril" you should be able to produce more of an argument than "because he was very good last season" repeated in multiple ways, shouldn't you?

Potentially but I tend to take titles like that with a pinch of salt and then decide for myself. I'm sure even Jaffa knows there's other options, he was simply creating some discussion - at least that's how I see it.

I guess the question might also be, can he justify his price tag? I think he can. The stats you listed are actually those of a much more expensive player, IMO an 11.0-11.5m at least.

Assuming he regresses (though his conversion rate on non penalty goals isn't that extraordinary), he could fall back a full point per game on average and be well worth it.

I was trying to get to this point in my long winded VORP articles: 8.5-9.0m is the height of the donkey price range, from which we get about 4.0ppg, and I don't think he will regress to donkey status since he is their talisman and has PKs to offset some of that regression.

Been in my team ever since I went Aguero free.

Was all ready to comment but you nailed it here TM. He is priced for regression already. He still upfront for an attacking Spurs team where the attack revolves around him. His conversion will drop from last season in all probability but he is no donkey and will score a decent share of chances over a season.

Kane's underlying stats are unsustainable for almost any player, and a close look at where and how he scored goals suggests a fair dollop of luck. Expect regression. He'll be good, but not 9.0+ good.

I believe most people picked Brown Ideye last year,
but who does everyone think will be flop signing of the year?

    I'll say Depay

Isn't Sakho a better option than Payet and worth the 1.0m?

I'd say yes, although fewer forward positions to fill, make his value less important I think.

    Good Afternoon Party People.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Do people rate Mahrez, he's been a busy lad in preseason. Also is Coates likely to start. A rating out of 10 would also be appreciated!

    Schmeichel

    Cedric / Ivan / Coates

    Hazard / Sterling / Cazorla / Mahrez

    Benteke / Rooney / Pelle

    Anya | Taylor | Williams | Schwarzer

hearing lloris may be injured (ben dinnery twitter), also flagged on fpl. vorm at 4.5 could be useful for early WC'ers. rotates well will schmeichel too

Strong MF. I Cant get behind Clyne or Jags yet. Tough fixtures. Forward line strong too. Goalkeepers could be be better i think. 8.0m outlay is just too little

Not really got an answer on the previous page, help appreciated 🙂

One of my final struggles, please help me out! Leaning towards B atm.

    A: Kos / Azpi / Mahrez / Rooney
    B: Kos / Bassong / Depay / Kane

Appreciate anyone to give a stray comment.
Forward line looks a little skinny but my strategy is as many key players across teams, and will have aguero by end of the month:

    cech (butland)
    iva/huth/amavi (pva/jenkinson)
    lens/haz/ozil/ayew (payet)
    tekkers/deeney/pelle

Thanks! Those were the names I had in mind. Just worried about Speroni's possible return at the end of the month. That gameweek's transfer has already been reserved for Kun.
