Weekly Fantasy Football for 2015/16

Season after season we’re seeing new weekly and daily Fantasy Football games launch and compete for our attention. It’s become obvious that these types of games are here to stay and are growing at pace.

This summer has been no different and it’s became clear that we needed a new approach to dealing with the games and to help guide those who decide to dip into them.

While we’ve limited ourselves to working with two full-time weekly/daily game partners in previous seasons, this time around we’re going to be more fluid over the course of the campaign.

You’ll see a number of games appear on our pages, some new, some familiar, although we’ll never look to cover more than two dedicated games in any given Gameweek.

In addition, we’ve a new approach to discussing these games and guiding your involvement.

We’ve recruited the 2013/14 Fantasy Premier League champion, Tom Fenley and we’re setting him a challenge.

He’ll get £100 stake money in every game that we include on our pages and we’re challenging him to use his undoubted Fantasy Football talent to turn that into profit.

Tom will be here updating his progress in each game, mulling over the options presented in a bid to build on his stake money.

He’ll also be providing a new “Weekly Shop” article in midweek which will detail his thinking for his player selections, outlining those picks that will be the mainstays of his weekly/daily lineups and those budget “enablers” that allow for big spend elsewhere.

In this way, we hope that we can help guide your strategies in whatever game you’re playing, whilst giving you an insight into playing some of our partner games week to week, including the prizes and formats they may have on offer.

In the meantime, we’d appreciate your views on daily and weekly games and will be starting a Hot Topic later this evening to capture your thoughts.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    So, Weekly/Daily Games.

Do you play them? If not, why not?

Does the ruleset put you off? Is it a time/mind space issue? Are they not available in your territory?

    Would bigger prizes help?

We'd appreciate your thoughts and feedback on them.

I'm considering, as a little side game, making a second FPL team each month and aiming for a high monthly rank.

3 chips available so can have some fun with it!

I had a go at the Telegraph one last year, if you're playing a season long one simultaneously I find it can be a pain...and also it's luck a lot of the time, everyone ends up with a team full of tge 4/5 teams with the best fixtures

I don't play them. It's nothing to do with the prizes or the ruleset, they're just a fundamentally different kind of game. The kind of games I like are long-haul turn-based strategy games like Civilisation or chess, what you do one week affects what you can do the next, FPL falls into that milleu because as well as short term considerations you are forced to think strategically. One week / one day games are more akin to pools or sports betting, not my bag.

      Weekly/Daily games:

Dont currently play them, but might be tempted by a weekly game with similar basis to current FPL rules and budgets constraints - just all 20 teams in a GW, and see who can pick the best team (bit like everyone having a go at the scout picks at once i suppose - but maybe limit to 1 or two picks from each team??)

Finding time might be an issue though. Prizes would help but not sure how often i'd commmit to an entry fee. some sort of FFS prize (membership? for the next year for existing members) would be cool if you're looking to set something up though

Interesting comments. We're working with two games that mimic the FPL ruleset this season - the first of these, Premier Punt will be featured this week.

I don't. Just haven't got the time as too busy concentrating on FPL. Though the games for money interest me, isn't there a one called Mondogoal?

I played one last season from realff.com. Old school fantasy football, was decent.

I dabble with Mondogoal but time is really the issue. FPL, Sky game and The Sun already take up enough of my time.

I play the Fantasy Football Exchange weekly games. Customer service is good and prices/rules fairly closely mirror FPL. I usually play a team close as possible to my FPL team so I'm rooting for the same thing across formats! I turned a profit last season, especially from their 50/50 leagues where everyone who finishes in the top half gets an equal share of the pot. The range of stakes is decent too.

Playon's got too complicated for my liking and FootballFanager takes an absolute age to pay out.

I spend so much time immersed in FPL, I've never even considered other games. Though I have had a fire-and-forget punt on the Sun Dream Team this year. Didn't even look at the rules though! So, I guess for me, it's a "time/mind space issue".
I can't begin to imagine how you guys find the time to do all of this. Especially the new parents amidst your ranks! 😉

I'm keen to expand into daily fantasy football this year. FPL with several mini-leagues, UFPL with multiple entries, and two different season-long draft leagues just isn't enough fantasy football.

I tried a bunch of them and enjoyed them at times, but in the end they're too focused on the money aspect for my liking.

This comes with various side effects like a less interesting discussion on here, fewer active players per game and the special kind of bullshit promotional lingo used in their articles that really, really gets to me.

If there was a free weekly game where they added up the results for a total competition I'd play it. You should run one on here, in fact 🙂

I tried PlayOn for the first time last season and entered their big weekly tournament each week for about 6 weeks. I deposited £50 and managed to double my money before withdrawing so I was fairly successful.. but I didn't really enjoy it.

The main reason is that there is very little strategy. I quickly worked out that to have any chance of winning the big prizes you had to load up on one team's defence and they had to keep a clean sheet as a minimum, and then it was down to picking the right players for the attacking spots. The reality is it's much easier/quicker and probably more profitable in the long run to simply bet on that team to keep a clean sheet, and on whichever big hitters you think will score.

However if sites like this really take off I would be interested to play again. If the prize pool was bigger and good marketing managed to attract a lot more 'fish/casuals' then these games could be value, but I get the feeling the only types of player who will play these games currently are fantasy 'Sharks' who can no longer take money off their mates!

The Sun's Dream Team has a £1m prize pool and this season all my non-FPL attention will be focused on managing the 60+ teams I have entered so far. I don't enjoy the Sun game nearly as much as FPL but the 200k to the winner is a good incentive.

Hopefully one day FPL will carry a decent prize!

Have had the occasional go on a couple last year. Would be interested in playing, but unlikely to commit on a regular basis.

For a different kind of game that would not become template: how about picking a weekly squad of 20 (3-7-6-4 formation) with no budget constraints and automatic bench boost, but a maximum of one player per team?

Really enjoy these games. So, far the only one I've found worth playing is Mondogoal. I tried fanager, playon, and a couple of other small ones as well, but they were a struggle to use/enjoy. It's the easiest to use, and they have a £10k contest the first week that's a £2 entry. I think the prizes should only get bigger as I read somewhere that they have now partnered with Yahoo. I'd prefer some different scoring maybe, and the ability for custom/private leagues, but it's great fun and I've won quite a bit of cash.

1stly Mental time and space is an issue but I have been tempted in the past

2ndly The hassle of setting it all up and taking that first step

3rdly I'm never sure if the prizes/winnings are available in NZ

4thly I fear loosing $ on Playon and other such gambling games.

Very talented, LvG knows how to get the best out of him, should play primarily in the hole and from what I gather could be a set piece monster.

Advanced role, price, and I don't think it's exceptionally high for a newcomer.

Sanchez came from Barcelona and Diego Costa scored a hatful for Atletico, who reached the CL final. Depay played for PSV. No disrespect, but he is still unproven on the higher level.

Too many risks in there imo.

Ighalo is a rotation risk to say the least. Wouldn't consider him as bench fodder, let alone a playing third striker.

      Bellerin has competition from Debuchy.

Otherwise looks good. Depay and Walcott are gambles, but more likely to pay off in a big way.

Cheers! See, I don't think Ighalo is a rotation risk, he was Watfords best striker in open play in 2015, if I remember rightly!

Bellerin I'm happy to punt on, but I keep changing between him and merte

Fair play. A few of my mates are Watford fans and they reckon Deeney is the only one not at risk. Just going on that really. Seems a lot of competition.

Of the two, I'd go Mert. But I have Kos in my team atm.

Only if you think there are no better options at that price, e.g. Mert, Clyne etc.

Man City don't have the best CS record and his place is threatened by Clichy so there is that to bear in mind too.

I'd get a different 5.0/5.5 defender and use the extra funds elsewhere if I were you.

I'm sure we're all sick of RMT's but this is pretty much the last night I can sit down & get my team finalised so I would appreciate any glaring errors ive made here -

    Ruddy, Butland.
    Azpilicueta, Koscielny, Cedric, Jones, Francis.
    Hazard, Ozil, Walcott, Ritchie, Wanyama.
    Rooney, Benteke, Sakho.

Watch out for Chelsea signing another left back to put Azpi under pressure. Otherwise looks good. (I'd probably spend less on defence though, or at least the same amount but on fewer defenders)

          Unless you're playing 4-3-3.

If 3-4-3, then I'd downgrade Jones to a 4m and upgrade Ritchie (my preference is Lens).

Considering that both Kun and Benteke are not going to start but are going to feature at some point during the match, i'd say that it'd be much better to start with him rather than Benteke but anyway Rooney is a good pick.

When Rodgers said he already knew the formation he was going with against Stoke he gave me the impression that Benteke wasn't going to start.

Or that he knew he would start...

My understanding is that they're desperate for him to be fit and that Rodgers doesn't think he needs to be completely 100% fit for the position he plays.

We'll find out more on Friday I guess.

Think it's a pretty solid team, even though I'm not a fan of having both Ozil and Walcott in there. Maybe switch Walcott to Sterling, or Ozil to Depay/Mata, Coutinho/Mane. And, who's the Jones you have in defence? Phil? Billy?

Not a Spurs fan so I can't comment on the likelihood...

But I liked the look of him today and I'd hope Poch is considering it. Has height, a good engine, pace, and judging by his goals record a lot more about him in the final third than Bentaleb and Mason.

They really do need somebody with a bit more creativity in that double pivot. Far too many functional players and nobody who really seems to pull the strings and dominate a game.

I'm so tempted to punt on Jordan Mutch (nor) for GW1. He would be a nice stand in for Siggy (che).

There's mutch competition in that Palace midfield but Jordan has been outstanding in pre-season, and Pardew has been singing his praises.
    http://www.croydonadvertiser.co.uk/Palace-midfielder-surprise-fans-lot-season-says/story-27482983-detail/story.html?

    .
    Verdict?

    A. Don't be silly. He's not nailed so it's too mutch of a risk. Play for rank!
    B. Go for it, punting is enjoyable, and he's a good pick. Rank doesn't matter.
    C. *banned shrug emoticon*

      Is he 4.5?

It's very short term, but if you're WCing early..

I don't see how he can nail down a place long term with Zaha, Bolasie, Puncheon and Cabaye, plus all those strikers. But if you really like him, I'd always recommend following your gut if it's short term.

      Oh, you wanted a letter............. B. 😀
