A lot of people seem to consider Theo Walcott for their initial Fantasy Premier League (FPL) squads for good reason. The England international is easily capable of double-digit Fantasy returns and hat tricks on his day and will always be a viable captain option when he plays against a bottom half side and especially against teams that tend to defend with a high defensive line. His pace and ability to get behind defenders with well timed runs can be deadly.

With injuries behind him he started all of Arsenals last three competitive games (if you count the Community Shield) and scored four goals and an assist over that time. Alexis Sanchez will be out for at least two league games and Walcott might even play as a striker, if preferred to Olivier Giroud.

As an Arsenal fan and a seasoned FPL player, finishing 12th overall last season, I thought I’d share my thoughts about Walcott.

Will He Play and Where?

How good are his starting chances? Manager Arsene Wenger’s tactics give some indication that, when fit, he is a key player as he fits perfectly into both of Arsenal’s most frequently used formations, 4-1-4-1 and 4-2-3-1, as he can play as both a forward and a winger.

It is worth mentioning last year that he made so many substitute appearances at the end of the season as he took time to recover from a lengthy injury. The indications are that, when fit, he will start, for the first Gameweeks of the season at least.

Now let’s consider some of the other players who are vying for a starting place. Whatever formation is employed, one midfield space is always reserved for a defensive position, with Francis Coquelin currently the favourite. Wenger also favours three technical playmakers on the pitch at the same time. These berths are likely to go to Mesut Ozil, Aaron Ramsey and Santi Cazorla.

With Alexis Sanchez out for the first and possibly second game due to his summer commitments, that leaves two spots up for grabs. In Sanchez’s absence these are likely to be filled by either Walcott as a winger, in which case Olivier Giroud will play as a forward, or with Walcott as a forward, in which case Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is likely to come in. The latter was used in the Community Shield and the smart money is on Wenger replicating this for Gameweek 1. What is clear over the years is that Wenger is not keen on playing both Oxlade-Chamberlin and Walcott as wingers at the same time.

Sanchez’s return could curtail Walcott’s game time, however. While the Chilean builds up his fitness Walcott will start, either up front or on the wing to accommodate Giroud. But with Sanchez on the pitch the number of slots dries up and Walcott may be in direct competition for Giroud for just one place, with no midfield berth to fall back on.

Conclusion

If I had to guess, I would say that over the season Giroud will start in six out of ten games. Walcott is likely to start seven out of ten games if every player mentioned is fit. In four out of ten games he will be the striker and three out of ten games he will be used on the wing. But it is worth mentioning that even from the bench Walcott is a potent threat and can still be relied on to score or assist.

even if he starts GW1, I can't see him playing more than 70 minutes. So a 1 week punt without guaranteed 90 minutes doesn't sound that convicing to me.

I have every confidence that he will start the games until Sanchez returns and than will become Sanchez in my team.

No sleep will be lost over Walcott this week.

    Hazard - Cazorla - Mane - Chadli - Wanyama

    Rooney - Tekkers - Sakho

planning 4-4-2 for GW1, Sakho on the bench, Huth starting.

Azpi is not nailed on if the Rahmen deal comes off for Chelsea, depends when you plan to use your WC. Mane > Ritchie instead of Sakho > Wilson? Will give you 2.0.

I think Sterling and Ritchie will get more than Mane and Chadli

Rule number 1: pick players who are nailed on, just because it's Walcott, doesn't make him an exception to the rule, he will constantly be subbed/benched, at 9m I don't think this is viable

O'Shea might be a bit of a gamble because Coates and Kaboul might lock down the two CB positions at Sunderland.

    Hello everyone!

Can you help me with my team?

    Ruddy / Rudd

    Azpilicueta / Cedric / van Aanholt / 4.0 / 4.0

    Walcott / Hazard / Depay / Sterling / Wanyama

    Rooney / Berahino / Pellé

    My main concerns are:
    - I want to have a Sunderland defender but I'm not sure if any of the 4.5 options are absolutely safe choices. But I also think that spending 5 on van Aanholt is kind of a waste with other options like Alderweireld at the same price...

    - Is having Walcott and Depay is too much betting?

    - Isn't Bony an excellent choice for the first couple of GW? I think it is but I don't see anyone talking about it...

    - Is there any forward valued at 6M or less worth having?

    Thank you for your help!

Lambert but terrible fixtures, best bets are Wilson and Deeney being your next Austin..
Sunderland are sooooooo bad, I'm not touching their defenders no matter how great their fixtures are. Huth, Francis and maybe even Gomez much better value and potential.

Not worth the risk for me.
Ozil is nailed and even if Walcott does start (Ox chambo and Giroud GW1 I reckon) then he will certainly be subbed off and once Sanchez is fit, his gametime will be massively reduced.

    Terrific, thank you.

Wenger has played both Caz and Ramsey CM in the past though, so is a defensive mid is not guaranteed? This would free up another slot for Walcott.

But for GW1, I'm undoubtedly going Theo (C).

This is my biggest uncertainty when picking my team. I had Walcott because in my analysis he came out as the best value player in the entire game per 90 minutes. As opposed to per match which included many sub appearances last season. At the moment I am playing it conservatively with Ozil instead of Walcott but i'm still unsure.

I'm sorry. I know that with publishing comes editing but my whole point was that Walcott shouldnt be in our squads and I tried to underline this through explaining that Wenger wants one pacey winger and 3playmakers. I think the details do matter and I tried to explain them in an article that probably had redundant passages but double the lenght.
I'm not 50-50. I'm against Walcott. HERE's the initial article, albeit with grammar and spelling mistakes, due to writing it on a phone in the US:

A lot of people seem to consider Theo Walcott for their FPL season start and that is with good reason. The England International averaged phenomenal PPGstats over the last seasons, he is easily capable of doubledigits and hattricks on his day and will always be a viable captainOption when he plays against a bottomhalf side and especcialy against teams that tend to defend with a high defensive line due to his pace and ability to get behind with well timed runs. As his latest injury lies behind him now, he started all of Arsenals last 3 competetive games (if you count the C-Shield) and scored 4 goals + 1 assist. Alexis will be out for at least 2 league games and Walcott might even play OOP as a striker, if preferred to Giroud, as in those last 3 games....so what's not to like?
I'm a Gooner and I watch almost every Arsenal game, thus observing Arsene Wengers preferences over the last year closely. Also despite not wanting to brag (maybe a little) I finished 12th overall last season and I deem myself to be a relative good jongleur of calculated FPL risks.

Theo is by far the best route into an Arsenal offense that lacks no alternatives when he plays but how good are his staring-chances really? Two things must be mentioned here: Wengers 4141 or 4231 has two wingers and one striker. This would suggest that there are 3 positions in that Theo could play. In GW1 plus to a lesser content GW2 Sánchez chances of playing are minimal but after that the LW place will obviously be taken wgich leaves two potential spots in the team for Theo.
(Now comes the quintessential part)! Midfield: One midfield place is reserved for the DM (Le Coq) and one for Sánchez. Wenger doesn't like to play two pacey wingers at once anymore. Other than in the past, he wants at least 3 'undirect', technical playmakers on the pitch. Wenger played Ozil on the left two seasons ago, Ramsey on the right this season and Santi Cazorla and Wilshere on the wide positions in this preseason. Beside Ozil at CAM now one of Ramsey and Santi cant play CM and will be shifted to the inverted RW position. On further evidence Wenger rarely started with Ox and Walcott (both on the wings) now or years ago, with Sánchez' introduction that didn't change and since the emergence of ever-attacking Bellerin on the overlap an out and out, quick Winger on the right was and will rarely used. Even the enigmatic Chamberlain, whom Wenger sees a CM for the future, scored in the Communityshield when he stepped inside from the right and unleashed a shot with his left foot instead of picking out smn with a cross. Ox is better suited to this less direct runs and the inverted Winger playmaker type as Theo, as is Wilshere btw. But in the end Ramsey or Santi will play there, as both of them should be nailed. Maybe from time to time and against lesser opponents both of them will play centrally with Coquelin on the bench as in the preseason game vs Everton. This experiment worked but such an offensive approach will probably only be used during a game, in that we are behind or in dire need of a goal. Other than that a DM (Coquelin or Arteta) will occupy one place.
This leaves the ST Position. Many seem to think that Walcott ousted Giroud and is first in the pecking order when in reality this might be the position, that Wenger will change the most from game to game. Even his CS-postmatch comments underlined that Walcott will be used vs higher lines and Giroud will be used when a physical presence will be needed, ergo vs deeper lines (vs WestHam at home GW1 for example). Maybe Theo will start even 2 out of 3 games but that surely wont be enough to us fantasyManagers. As for the West Ham game Sánchez wont be there but after a great preseason I can defenitely see the Ox starting on the wing again with Ramsey or Caz on the other. Wenger wants posession in these games and he doesn't get that with Walcott on the wing. Walcott is all about goals (what we like) but that might only diminuish his gameTime.
    Conclusio:
If I had to guess, I would say that Giroud starts upfront at 60% and in that case i'll still give Theo a 50% to start on the wing in Sánchez absence but in total thats only 70% for Walcott to start and as we are all on a WC at the moment, would you really wanna take that risk, especially considering that Sánchez might be back for GW2 and Ozil+Ramsey are viable alternatives at 0.5 less?! I get that Walcott is the only captaincyOption out of those and he's been one of my favourite FPLPlayers over the years too but smth has changed since Sánchez arrived and Ramsey stepped up bigTime for almost 2 years now. Yes, Walcott is far more likely to explode than others but most likely it wont be worth it, when a player has a 70%chance to start in the first two games games and not much more than 50% after that, which btw will result in a definite transfer out for -4 or a transfer that would have been needed elsewhere AFTER he starts on the bench and will probably have gotten you 1pt. That will be an inevitable doubleBlow.
Even for the first two games Walcotts projected output would have to be over 1,42 times that of Sterling or Santi or Ramsey at a 70%starting chance.
And if you believe that he's worth that, I will still point out that his transfer out after that comes at an additional cost (of -4 or a FT). Obviously this is based on my observations of Arsenal and my opinion regarding Le Profs philosophy and in the end Walcotts could start and bag a brace vs West Ham and go on a run but imo it's not worth the risk yet and the odds just don't fit with so many alternatives at his price. Just my 2 cent

As an Arsenal fan, I have to agree with this observations. It's really spot on and you ran through most of the scenario's that could possibly happen.

I would say that Wenger chose Wallcott over Giroud for the Chelsea game, but I am unsure if the same will happen for the West Ham game because of the arguments you put forward. In my mind, Theo has to play. A hattrick last game of the previous season, full pre-season for the first time in a long time and he started against Chelsea and scored in the FA Cup. Why wouldn't he play? He signed a new contract and is on 140 K a week. Ox came into the team and did really well, but he mostly came in the team because Wallcott had to move centrally for the Chelsea game and Alexis is out.

Even if Theo doesn't play CF, which is what I expect, he should still play because of the level of his performances. Oxlade can have his breakway season all season, he doesn't have to be in the team from GW1 so I expect Theo to play as a Right sided striker who doesn't really contribute anything to the build up. Expect Bellerin to provide the width, he clearly is first choice until he has a dip in form. When Sanchez is back, expect Theo to play up front or sit on the bench.

What do you guys make of this?

I guess, I need to add that I'm still thankful for the publishing and just felt that I did make a case for my opinion - Wenger wants 3 undirect playmakers - that was left out.. (For example the Ozil on the left wing, Ramsey on the right..Wilshere and Santi in preseason as well..). Thanks still a lot. Love the site

I have an interesting take on the Walcott conundrum. In spite of the majority going for Bellerin to start, I think Debuchy will.
Wenger rates Debuchy a better 'defending' defender, also has better aerial ability. Hence if Debuchy starts, I think Walcott nails the RW slot even more, even ousting One of Ramsey/Cazorla.
