Our pre-Gameweek members article returns this evening as Fantasy managers look to improve upon last week’s disappointing start to the season. As always, we take a three-part approach – the first section will be free for all visitors to the site and will analyse the chief protagonists in our Gameweek Captain Poll, though the latter two parts will be members-only, as we delve deeper into the Opta and Rate My Team projections.

The Captain Poll

Wayne Rooney sits atop the summit of our Captain’s Poll for the second week running, with 25% of voters backing the Red Devils frontman to open his account at Villa Park. Manchester United struggled to carve out many clear-cut chances last Saturday, but they’re likely to enjoy a more free-flowing affair against an Aston Villa side that’s recorded just one home clean sheet under Tim Sherwood’s stewardship. The fact that only Queens Park Rangers (30) and Newcastle United (26) conceded more goals than the West Midlands outfit (23) following their managerial change in 2014/15 serves as further encouragement for Rooney owners.

Christian Benteke heads up the chasing pack with a 24% share of the votes. Following a cagey head-to-head against Stoke City last weekend, the Belgian marksman will be relishing the chance to test out the resolve of Bournemouth’s rearguard at Anfield. From Gameweek 26 last term (Sherwood’s first match in charge), no striker tallied more goals than Benteke (11), with five goals arriving in his last four home starts. Two braces and a hat-trick in the final ten rounds of fixtures illustrated his propensity for explosive returns, augmenting his attraction as a captaincy candidate.

A large gap has opened up between the second and third-most popular captaincy picks, with 8% of voters planning to entrust Harry Kane with the armband when Stoke City pay a visit on Saturday. Spurs’ talismanic striker suffered from a lack of service against United but looked sharp on the few occasions he was afforded possession in dangerous areas of the pitch. The Lilywhites will be out to avenge a 2-1 defeat in the corresponding fixture last term but face a resilient Potters outfit that conceded just 23 goals on the road – the same as Chelsea.

Graziano Pelle is pushing Kane for that bronze medal berth with 7% of the vote. The Italy international opened the scoring against Newcastle with a powerful header and appears to have picked up where he left off in the previous campaign, having bagged four goals in his final seven outings. Allied with strikes in both of Saints’ Europa League qualifying matches, Pelle’s form is reminiscent of his start to the 2014/15 season, when he chalked up six goals and one assist in the first eight Gameweeks. A visit from Everton is certainly no pushover, but Pelle has thrived at St Mary’s Stadium up to now, with 11 of his 13 goals coming on home turf.

His partner in crime, Sadio Mane, comes in at 5%, having spurned two great chances to grant Saints the lead in stoppage time at St James’ Park. He, too, will be buoyed by the revelation that Everton conceded the sixth most number of away goals (29) last season.

Perusing the lower reaches of the list, Philippe Coutinho and Dimitri Payet are being tipped by 3% of our readership by virtue of their favourable home match-ups and attacking returns last Gameweek. Meanwhile, dormant big-hitters Sergio Aguero and Alexis Sanchez have also been backed by 3% of voters, with early adopters looking to profit from their probable first starts of the new campaign.

Theo Walcott and Eden Hazard have plummeted down the rankings this week, with each laying claim to 2% of the vote. The former was a surprise omission for many in the starting line-up against the Hammers, yet Alan Pardew’s attacking Eagles outfit should encourage Arsene Wenger to start the jet-heeled winger at Selhurst Park. The latter, meanwhile, faces a trip to the Etihad Stadium, which many will expect to be a tight, attritional encounter.

Sorry lads, I am mid-quiz and just seen the Aguero quotes on the homepage, what are people translating them as? A likely bench and come on 60 minutesish?

Yeah unsure, maybe bench and bring him on if losing or goaless last 30 mins.

He always tries to deflect attention from his team when they get a bad result. If it wasn't Eva it would be something else. he always does this. And it works. People are talking about that rather than how poor Chelsea were.

Yeah I'll hold on for one more week, then probably Walcott -> Payet to fund Aguero, regardless of performance. Pre-planned one week punt Lukaku -> Sakho (haven't actually pulled the trigger mind).

checked walcott earlier at 8pm on my phone on fpl stats. was -87.8% to drop. now at -89.4%. don't know how frequently they update but looks like dropping roughly 1.6%/hour. 5 hours left to rise. cutting it a bit fine to hold on methinks. swore i'd ignore this stuff this year, but need the shekels

Keeping faith with my original squad, mainly to save my free transfer for next week getting Aguero in.

This leaves me with one dilemma
Wanayama (s'ton) OR Wilson (B'mth), both likely two pointers but do either have any advantage? I know Wilson didnt score against Villa however he did have a lot of the ball in the box and I don't see Bournemouth as a park the bus kind of team, so expect them to try and attack Liverpool.

For me it is Roo or Sanchez. I have Kane but I'm not going to Cap him until he proves that teams have not fully solved his riddle. He broke onto the scene and then these teams may have figured him out. I'm pretty sure Sanchez will do well even if he is hauled off on 70 mins. Good luck all.

      I like.

I'm wondering about Cedric after his roasting on the weekend.

Your not keeping the Theo faith for now then ?

I'm going to give until gw3 or maybe 4

        Hey Evs.

I think they will start Cedric again and give him another chance, if not i have Huth on the bench which is not a bad sub 🙂

I'm really confused about what to do about Theo, i'd love to keep him but will hate it when he most likely wont start again imo. Giroud is the only spot he could take and even if he does he will only last 60 or 70 mins before being replaced.

I think he'll all start (Cedric) too,but if he gets another whipping then he may struggle.

Theo is conundrum. We all knew this would happen, yet we all bought him.

I think I'll hold this week, and then see next week when the aguero switch may need to happen.

Agree about Cedric, will be keeping a close eye on him.

Yeah i know that, but i was really expecting him to start, and also deliver against West Ham, that would have made it hard for Wenger to drop him, and we would be a lot more comfortable about him. Unfortunately, that hasn't happened and we need to reevaluate. At the minute, i'm edging towards losing him. Long term it's definitely a good move, can't be spending 9m on a non starter.

              Very true.

Maybe his last week for me if he doesn't start, I will be looking for a scapegoat to bring in aguero.

so far reactions to Hazard and Theo to Sanchez and Chadli have ranged from

    kneejerk
    disaster
    crazy talk
    stupid

    hmmm

I'd love to just swap Theo to Sanchez, sadly I don't have an extra 2.0 lying around

The main part I don't get is why you'd start with him if you immediately lose faith after a 2 pointer vs Swansea.

These reactions mean only one thing, you must do it! I did it, and I am a really crazy, stupid kneejerking, disaster of a person. My wife and kids even told me not to come home tonight.

There is no validity to the negative argument, "then why did you draft him?" That means you, what, cannot change your mind, adjust, go with some gw1 observations (and a tough gw2 match), or say that you may have made a mistake in your draft and cannot fix it? ("you made a promise to Hazard and now you must keep it! -- or, no soup for you!"). Please.

If your gut is that Sanchez will out-perform Hazard, based on whatever reasons, then go with it. It's not like you are making (another) promise NOT to get Hazard back at some point. Those dang promises...

Quick advice please.......What is more sensible....

Walcott to ayew before price drop.....Good short term move but ruins my longer term plan......which is

Save ft and Keep Walcott one more week...Then do Rooney and walcott to kun and 5.5.....with spare cash to bring in another city midfielder for their gw4 game with city...
    Thanks

I am really conflicted on Wally. On one hand, it's clear Wenger will shuffle, but at the same time he has double-digit potential every week. Ultimately, I think, I'll end up going without an Arsenal mid if their form continues to be middling, but will ride him out for now and see what happens before the break. Then, if he is my only sputtering player, will drop him for someone like a Payet and use the funds to upgrade elsewhere. If he comes good, he comes good.

Long-term plan looks sound, too bad Mahrez is going to rise. Consider Jurado if his fixtures are good (can't be arsed to look).

MUFC fan since 1995, WH supporter since 2008 (first visit to England as an adult and could only get tix to see them play Blackburn of all London clubs, kinda got hooked on the atmosphere). Lucky for me the two don't really compete for the same positions, so little by way of conflict of interest 🙂

Yep, sounds like a plan. I almost WCed, to be honest, but was able to convince myself to resist for once and ride it out since this lineup was of the more long-term strategic variety. TorresMagic had an almost-similar lineup but was considering WCing last I checked, wonder where that went.
