Our pre-Gameweek members article returns this evening as Fantasy managers look to improve upon last week’s disappointing start to the season. As always, we take a three-part approach – the first section will be free for all visitors to the site and will analyse the chief protagonists in our Gameweek Captain Poll, though the latter two parts will be members-only, as we delve deeper into the Opta and Rate My Team projections.

The Captain Poll

Wayne Rooney sits atop the summit of our Captain’s Poll for the second week running, with 25% of voters backing the Red Devils frontman to open his account at Villa Park. Manchester United struggled to carve out many clear-cut chances last Saturday, but they’re likely to enjoy a more free-flowing affair against an Aston Villa side that’s recorded just one home clean sheet under Tim Sherwood’s stewardship. The fact that only Queens Park Rangers (30) and Newcastle United (26) conceded more goals than the West Midlands outfit (23) following their managerial change in 2014/15 serves as further encouragement for Rooney owners.

Christian Benteke heads up the chasing pack with a 24% share of the votes. Following a cagey head-to-head against Stoke City last weekend, the Belgian marksman will be relishing the chance to test out the resolve of Bournemouth’s rearguard at Anfield. From Gameweek 26 last term (Sherwood’s first match in charge), no striker tallied more goals than Benteke (11), with five goals arriving in his last four home starts. Two braces and a hat-trick in the final ten rounds of fixtures illustrated his propensity for explosive returns, augmenting his attraction as a captaincy candidate.

A large gap has opened up between the second and third-most popular captaincy picks, with 8% of voters planning to entrust Harry Kane with the armband when Stoke City pay a visit on Saturday. Spurs’ talismanic striker suffered from a lack of service against United but looked sharp on the few occasions he was afforded possession in dangerous areas of the pitch. The Lilywhites will be out to avenge a 2-1 defeat in the corresponding fixture last term but face a resilient Potters outfit that conceded just 23 goals on the road – the same as Chelsea.

Graziano Pelle is pushing Kane for that bronze medal berth with 7% of the vote. The Italy international opened the scoring against Newcastle with a powerful header and appears to have picked up where he left off in the previous campaign, having bagged four goals in his final seven outings. Allied with strikes in both of Saints’ Europa League qualifying matches, Pelle’s form is reminiscent of his start to the 2014/15 season, when he chalked up six goals and one assist in the first eight Gameweeks. A visit from Everton is certainly no pushover, but Pelle has thrived at St Mary’s Stadium up to now, with 11 of his 13 goals coming on home turf.

His partner in crime, Sadio Mane, comes in at 5%, having spurned two great chances to grant Saints the lead in stoppage time at St James’ Park. He, too, will be buoyed by the revelation that Everton conceded the sixth most number of away goals (29) last season.

Perusing the lower reaches of the list, Philippe Coutinho and Dimitri Payet are being tipped by 3% of our readership by virtue of their favourable home match-ups and attacking returns last Gameweek. Meanwhile, dormant big-hitters Sergio Aguero and Alexis Sanchez have also been backed by 3% of voters, with early adopters looking to profit from their probable first starts of the new campaign.

Theo Walcott and Eden Hazard have plummeted down the rankings this week, with each laying claim to 2% of the vote. The former was a surprise omission for many in the starting line-up against the Hammers, yet Alan Pardew’s attacking Eagles outfit should encourage Arsene Wenger to start the jet-heeled winger at Selhurst Park. The latter, meanwhile, faces a trip to the Etihad Stadium, which many will expect to be a tight, attritional encounter.

Sorry but I actually still like the first one better...except having Sanchez is key in the second one. What's your plan to get Aggie? Set yourself up to get Aguero easily in GW4 by not making a FT next week.

Hahaha you have just made my job a lot harder my friend :')

Appreciate your feedback! I still have 24 hours to ring changes so thanks!

Yes from discussions on here it seems everyone is planning on flooding their teams with Aguero come the start of GW4.

I feel to avoid that and go with a differential, but i guess that's going to just be too risky....

The key though is shouldn't we already be kicking ourselves for not having Aguero in from the start? He came on as a sub in GW1 and will do so this week too...then all hell is gonna break loose. I plan to WC before GW4...so just be sure that you're not shortsighted in this WC...be sure to have some longterm players:

            Long-term:
Aguero (a plan to get him by using 2 transfers only!)
            Silva
            Rooney
            Deeney

            Short-term:
Your entire DEF is short! Richards, Targett, and Ox are super risky. Maybe downgrade Fabregas to improve your DEF?
One of Cabaye or Ayew (or Deeney) will have to be benched every week...maybe downgrade one of them.

Good luck. I'm here advising you yet I don't have real answers myself. Cheers.

Always seems to be the case! I can give great advice but I never take my own advice haaha!

Yeah you have me thinking about upgrading my Def now,

              Maybe

              Oxford + Cabaye > Cresswell + Westwood ???

There are so many good 4.5 defenders though that you can beef up your DEF and save even more dough: Coates, Huth, Morgan, Francis. You're on the right track though.

4 of your DEF are awfully risky...only Cedric and he got pulled off at 45 mins...even Cameron (I'm from his hometown, by the way).

I don't mean to confuse you even more!

To finish that Aguero note...Never use differentials on your CAPTAIN...go different anywhere else you want. If there is one easily captainable beast, go get him. Anyone else will be hit or miss (Roo, Fab, Haz, Kane)...but maybe Sanchez too and you'll already have him. Then go wild with the rest of your picks.

I actually have a podcast giving my tips on fantasy so not so much of a moron.

A good manager makes changes when its necessary, not sit back and watch it crumble.

Also, ever heard of learning from your mistakes?

If you are lucky I may give you advice later in the season, you are gonna need it.

So I was about to do my weekly thing where I try to figure out what this article says by reading comments, looking at the picture, etc. until I realized I'm a member now and can actually read the article! Membership has its privileges...

    1. Breadbin

In my opinion, it turns the game from fun into serious. One year as a member, I much prefer making decisions based on what I want to do rather than follow stats. Where I finish is about the standard luck and my own ability, I like it that way.

Being a member doesn't deprive you of that.

It did a bit, because I looked at the stats and ended up with the generic team. Not knowing a lot heightens my enjoyment, I don't get bothered by a good our bad score. If I knew the stats I'd follow them.

Strange. I do all my FPL decisions based on stats, and my teams are always pretty flair, far from the template. I guess we read the stats differently. I know the fantasyfootballscout team doesn't read them like I do.

I do think there's something to the whole matter of turning it away from being fun. People on these sites sometimes are militant about hits, getting players you want, etc. It's a floopin' game people, enjoy it. If you have fun taking a hit to get a player you want to take a punt on, why not!

The Batcave is like a female orgasm. Very few people know where it is...when you wake up you probably have no idea how you got there...and you can't find your way back when you've left.

Risky having 2 second choice GK's will have to change them when Speroni and Foster are Fit.

This week i would play Cedric over Toby.

Honestly not keen on Spurs defense, swap Toby for Williams or West Ham Defender

I'm looking at saving my ft this week and then doing Rooney and walcott to kun and mahrez next week......even though Walcott will fall and mahrez has risen.

This allows me to do Ozil to sterling gw4 for city v Watford.

Is that sensible or not....alternative seems to be shelvey or affelay instead of mahrez......Thanks

I've got Walcott too, but (ok scared is the wrong word its a game but you know what I mean) fearful of selling him simply as you just know he'll catch fire one of these weeks.
purely because of their next 2 games i'd put in payet - but who else do you have in midfield?
I'm not picking hazard till gw4 at earliest but again he's one of those you fear selling

There should be an autoreply message from this site. As soon as someone types in -8, -12, -16 etc the autoreply just says 'no'.

The answer by the way is no! If your that desperate for Sanchez and think he is going to score big, you can still do him with the Sterling > Ayew cash. To do Wilson > Defoe on top is just baffling.

I'll probably get him back in GW4 (when I WC to get Aguero) or a few weeks after that...and his price will be 11.4 or 11.3 by then. I dropped him for Sanchez yesterday and I don't regret it (yet).
