The Pre-Match Preamble - Gameweek 38 Preamble

After ten seasons of Fantasy Premier League management, I’d presumed I’d experienced almost every awkward scenario.

Tomorrow, however, I’ll be willing Theo Walcott to cut through the Crystal Palace defence having shown him the door just 24 hours earlier.

It’s a bizarre and uncomfortable situation, created by this season’s disjointed beginnings.

Us Fantasy managers begun the campaign without a full set of clubs. We’ve been chipping away with the irons, having left our trusted big-hitting set of woods in the garage.

The gradual introduction of Sergio Aguero and Alexis Sanchez – obvious contenders for the top-scoring FPL player this term – may not be so gradual.

Both entered stage left in Gameweek 1 and both are expected to feature in the lead cast this weekend. Should they arrive and steal the show, there will be frenzied transfer activity beyond anything we’ve seen to this point.

Most visitors to our pages are well aware of their impending arrival.

The clamour to ship out Walcott in order to preserve a measly 0.1 is not the result of careless knee-jerk; it’s a necessary step to prepare our squads for the inclusion of more consistent heavy-hitters. For true armband candidates.

Sadly, it’s clear to this point that we can’t place Wayne Rooney in that bracket.

When it comes to form, Wayne wears his heart on his sleeve: he’s either driving forward, showing hunger for goals with every touch or wandering aimlessly, showing hunger for Greggs with every misplaced pass. Rooney’s performance at Villa Park last night clearly resembled the latter.

Without a goal on his travels since November, Rooney has confirmed that he’s simply keeping the seat warm for Aguero; his 10.5 will surely be up-scaled as soon as squad shuffles allow the acquisition of the Argentine.

Or maybe Harry Kane will blitz the Stoke defence and change our plans? Maybe Christian Benteke will spark on his home debut and force a rethink?

Such uncertainties are inevitable at this stage in the campaign, although it’s safe to say that Aguero and Sanchez, along with Eden Hazard, are as close as we get to sure bets.

With Arsenal and Chelsea stalling on day one and Rooney currently resembling a Sunday League regular, we should forgive ourselves for seeking out sure bets.

I’ll be back for you later, Theo.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Unlucky Rooney (c)ers.

Wasn't here last night for the game, but had to check my phone every few minutes just to put my mind at ease.

I avoided Rooney because I think he has been out of the striker role for too long. But on his day he is capable of great things. I think people should treat him like Hazard, if you want the returns you have to ride the storm and the few blanks that will come along.

This means unfortunately that Rooney (and Hazard) aren't fantastic (c) options which is why Aguero seems "essential" each week imo.

I wouldn't be inclined to ditch him just yet, similarly to those with Walcott. It is only two weeks in; teams need a few games to find their rhythm and get used to the manager's style (with 4-5 new first team players again this season, this is understandable). Perseverance and calmness are key, with a dash of sensibility to know when to jump ship. But imo it is not now.

Hes playing as a striker and only got one touch against Villa in the opponents box whole game. That stat says enough about rooney

        That bad?

My point is just that in these early games I wouldn't let two matches be a proper representation of how a team is going to play long term. Sunderland for example got thrashed by Leicester, but I don't expect them to be whipping boys over the next few months.

Last year, Dick showed he can play quite well defensively, so it's just a matter of getting the fitness levels up to scratch, similarly with United. I wouldn't be jumping ship on Rooney if I had him, not quite yet. But I certainly wouldn't be making him (c) either

GW1 was enough for me. A sign of things to come. Ryan was the only one I think of the Scouts to call it right re Rooney up top. Yes, I know 2 games is hardly a large sample, and Rooney historically is streaky, but sometimes you have to act decisively or you will get left behind.

The sign is there in the spurs game where utd looked toothless to me. No surprise they will perform similarly terrible against villa.

Rooney was a good striker..but until utd started to play well again i would never (c) a utd player.

Sorry but wrong on many levels. He is not on and off. He scores in streaks identifiable easily.

And he was really bad these 2 games, will be shipping him out this week. Had him captain too.

The fact he isn't the player he once was is irrelevant. United have not been very free flowing since Fergie left. I had Rooney at the start in Moyes debut season, United struggled for shots and I quickly sold him. I had him at the start of last season, yes he scored first game but again United weren't very convincing going forward so I got rid quick enough.

I haven't made that mistake third season running. It blows my mind that people are shocked and frustrated with Rooney when both he and United going forward have been lacklustre for over 2 years now.

People will still be picking Rooney in their FPL teams when he is 38 years old and playing for Everton as a central defender.

I think it's hard to say how good they were as Villa were so poor going forward themselves. But I guess you can't get any better defensively than a clean sheet.

Lets be honest if Villa had a bit more class up forward they could have won that game. I dont see how thats playing good. United won last two games because they show quality once or twice in a game not because they are playing good. They turned the ball over a lot and didnt really create much apart from Januzaz's goal and whole second half villa looked more of a threat.

I dont get Rooney any more every time I watch United he looks lost. I remember when he used to dictate games and control them.. Used to run all over the field and put more pressure on cbs.. Richards and Clark didnt have a tough game at all. If i was LVG id be in the market for a striker and creative player

Pedro's coming so there's the creativity. United definitely need a 20+ goal scorer, Rooney is no longer that player.

SAF never rated Rooney as a centre forward but I don't think LVGs style of play helps. Rooney is heading down the same road as RVP you just don't become a bad player overnight, it must be a bit demoralising at times playing the lone striker under LVG.

The Rooney conundrum is not so much of a conundum for me.

Only 3 strikers could replace him in my team. Aguero,Benteke and Sakho. Already got Pelle and Kane.

If they fail to impress, Rooney stays for that juicy fixture. Otherwise Rooney out for whoever steals the show.

Anyone else expects a Crystal Palace win on Sunday?

I think Bolasie and Zaha could run riot against Mertesacker, plus Giroud probably starting means we wouldn't be able to use Walcott's pace against Dann and Delaney.

    2-1 for Palace I guess.

Every time Spurs make a signing I can't take it seriously.

N'Jie... two years time...N'Gone... just like the rest of them.

On paper they sign good players, but never seem to get anywhere. The problem for me is the managerial revolving door. They need to go and put the money into getting a decent manager not someone like Harry, AVB or Poch who we know will only be there for a short time before moving on.

I just think Spurs lack the ambition to challenge for all of the money they spend, I would hate that as a fan.

He was suited with Southampton and hailed as a great defensive coach, when now it looks as though it might be just Southampton (as a team) that are good defensively.

Spurs haven't looked solid in defence now for a good while. Granted they have strengthened this window with Alderweireld and Trippier, so it remains to be seen how they do.

But as a "progressive" club that are supposed to be improving each year, no way. Selling Bale was the turning point. Had he stayed and they invested the money they would be putting in a much better challenge every year, and with a better manager, they could be real contenders. Too much focus on the business side of things at that club, imo.

    B) Sterling -> max £6.5m

I was in this exact position last night, with added time pressure because of Walcott's imminent price drop. I couldn't decide of a 6.5/6m midfielder that I liked, so went Benteke -> Sahko (fixtures look great), Rooney -> Aguero, and Walcott -> Mata (thought he's been the only midfielder for Man U showing promise) for a -4 hit.

annoying that after years of saying how awful I think Rooney is, the time I finally buy him he's beyond rank. Made sense at the time though, Benteke, Kane and him up front, two arsenal mids. I think unless rooney has something prove, like competing wit Van Persie, he has no desire at all. Amazing that van gaal seems at war with every player he has contact with, even those who score the only goal to win a game, but not the permanent captain who seemingly can do no wrong. Also amazing that the team has dramatically improved yet no one is guaranteed a place other than Rooney, and now Herrera has been forced out. Even Mata's position seems precarious. Van Gaal seems as unpleasant and untrustworthy of footballing talent as Mourinho to me.

I think Mata is fine, he's our best (only?) #10 and can also be shifted out to the right. If Pedro comes, then the left side will be overloaded. Think we need some cover on the right/up-front.

Rooney, "no desire"? I think the opposite is true.

And I don't see the dramatic improvement, certainly not when you compare SAF's last season. They have spent HUGE amounts of money and yet play a dreadful brand of football.

      1. aehii
        • 12 Years

The team has dramatically improved in terms of signings, is what I mean. Actual midfielders arriving for once. I think the football is worse, but it was still bad under Ferguson towards the end.

You think Rooney shows desire? How? He always goes through the motions, always has, there is no spark there at all, hence his poor first touch and lack of awareness around him, he'll lose the ball when receiving it if pressured because he's lazy. Compare to the urgency and alertness of someone starting their career like Harry Kane, a lot of his goals came through his footwork when receiving the ball, like the one against the chelsea 5-3 where he swiveled from chadli's pass and guided the ball into the net. It's less of a physical thing and more of a mental one, rooney played with fire and passion when he was 18, it's what propelled him, but he's played more football than anyone at his age in the league and looking at the last few seasons he'll raise his game for big matches or when he's challenged in the media or from other players. Giving him the captaincy and having nothing to pursue in terms of a new contract dents his eagerness.

He is, has pace but Lyon have sold because he is far from the finished article and see the money as the kind they wouldn't pay if they were on the other side of the negotiating table.
