Aston Villa’s mass overhaul continued apace with the capture of Barcelona winger Adama Traore on a five-year deal. The former Spain U19 international – who became the Villains’ tenth new recruit this summer – said that the West Midlands club was his favoured transfer destination:

“It’s an honour for me to come here. It’s a club that showed interest in me from the first moment and made me feel important in terms of their project. I have spoken to the manager and have a very good impression of him and what he wants from me. All this have made this club my top attraction. I would also like to express my gratitude to everyone at FC Barcelona for helping me develop as a player and as a person.”

The History

Born in Catalonia, Traore enrolled at Barcelona’s world-renowned La Masia academy in 2004, where he would spend the next nine years learning his trade. It wasn’t until 2013 that Traore earned a spot in the Barcelona B team, who competed in the second tier of Spanish football.

After making his debut for the reserves in October 2013, Traore was afforded regular starts in the second half of the campaign; he went on to bag five goals and four assists across 26 outings at the right-wing berth, clocking 1462 minutes in the process. The 2013/14 season also saw the precocious 17-year-old make his competitive bow for the senior team, with brief cameos arriving in both La Liga and the Champions League.

Traore was a permanent fixture for the B team the following term, tallying three goals and 14 assists in 37 outings. Despite his best efforts, they were relegated from Segunda Division, having finished nine points adrift of safety at the foot of the table. Traore would notch a further two starts for the senior squad in the Copa del Rey tournament, netting a brilliant solo goal in an 8-1 demolition of third-tier side Huesca.

Still just 19 years of age, Traore has represented Spain at the U16, U17 and U19 levels. His last run-outs on the international stage occurred in the summer of 2014, when he bagged two assists for Spain in the group stages of the U19 European Championship.

The Prospects

Sherwood was clearly delighted with his coup after announcing the deal. Discussing his new acquisition with the local press, the Villa boss revealed he’s been a long-term admirer of Traore, though was quick to confirm he’ll be allowed time to settle:

“He’s someone I have been tracking for a long time. He’s physically a man – and he has been for some time. He’s a big powerful boy, very quick, dynamic and a maverick-type player. He stays wide, picks the ball up, runs at defenders and doesn’t give them a minute’s peace. We are delighted he has chosen Aston Villa to continue his development, but that is what it is (development). He is not the finished article by any means. He is certainly a player who can help us out now, but for the long term future he could be magnificent.”

Traore has been deployed on the left wing on the rare occasion, but the bulk of his youth career has been spent on the right flank. Despite boasting an explosive turn of pace that enables him to steal a march on most opposing full-backs, the Catalonian winger displays a propensity for cutting inside and shooting with his less-favoured (left) foot – which perhaps explains he was only able to muster three goals last term.

Akin to Tottenham Hotspur’s Andros Townsend, Traore’s decision-making has been pinpointed as a prime area for improvement. Pooling all the players from the Segunda Division and Europe’s top five leagues, Traore (243) attempted 63 more dribbles than the next-most prolific ball-hogger, Eden Hazard (180). Considering that the young Spaniard falls well short of the Belgian superstar in terms of end product, Sherwood will likely need to reign in this aspect of Traore’s play in the Premier League.

Couple the recruitment of Traore and Jordan Ayew with the imminent return of injured duo Carles Gil and Jack Grealish, in addition to the likes of Scott Sinclair and Gabby Agbonlahor, and it’s clear that Sherwood has a bevy of wide options at his disposal – that’s before you factor in the possibility of Leandro Bacuna adopting an advanced role, as he did in pre-season.

Sherwood has utilised a 4-3-3 in the first couple of fixtures but may switch to a 4-2-3-1 set-up in light of their recent arrivals, with Grealish or Gil operating at the number ten berth. With Ayew favourite to take up the right flank berth in a lone striker system, Traore would be pushing Sinclair for a start on the left in such a set-up. Alternatively, the Villains could operate with a 4-4-2, which could allow Ayew to moved up top and hand Traore the role on the right.

Having scored just once in the opening two Gameweeks, though, it’s fair to say that most Fantasy managers will be steering well clear of Villa’s attacking recruits until they start to look a little more cohesive after a summer of restructuring.

In spite of a relatively kind price of 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and a strong quartet of upcoming fixtures (cry, SUN, lei, WBA), Traore looks likely to be eased into contention ensuring that he’s to be filed under “one for the future”.

"The Wildcard chip can be used twice a season, once in the first half of the season (before 28 Dec 14:00) and once in the second half of the season.

Wildcards are played on the transfers page but aren't active until you have confirmed the transfers"

With this new rule in mind is it worth saving the wildcard any more?

Does it make an early wildcard make more sense?

Its not as important to save the WC anymore. I personally still want to hang on till Christmas if I can, but doesnt matter that much.

Yeah. I was glad I held on to my WC until the April double game week fixtures last year but since I'm going to be given one after chirstmas to use when I like I no longer see any need to hold on to WC and would rather catch price rises now and get my team in order/well preped

It really does, but still nice to have when we have more information about players, or with a huge fixture shift

I think we have some good info already. I think players like Payet and Ayew are gonna last the course of this run in. What big fixture sifts are coming up? Post Gw4 is it?

Think that's my instinct too. Everton should be on a high after today and woeful as he's been, Rooney at home to Newcastle does seem like a good opportunity for him to turn it around

(Sorry for the re-post, got bottomed)

RMT please! This is hopefully a calculated wildcard team btw, not a knee jerk:

    Ruddy/Butland

    Azpi, Clyne, Cedric, Huth, Targett

    Sanchez, Mata, Yaya, Ayew, Anya

    Aguero, Gomis, Diouf

Already had the GK's, last 3 in defence, Sanchez, Mata and Ayew.
Wanting to take advantage of price increase in Ayew then thinking of downgrading to Mahrez gameweek 4 when Swansea play United and Foxes play Bournemouth. Thought I'd get double City in now, just before their fixtures get very good. Cedric is also replaceable.

Thanks a lot in advance, happy to look at your teams!

Calculated with Anya and Diouf? Targett is likely to lose his place too.

Anya an ok 4.5 for the bench. Stokes fixtures begin to get very good, only big team they face Arsenal in the next 10 gameweeks or so so Diouf looks better than Sakho atm IMO. Targett is the only 4.0 who even plays. Ruddy and Butland are a decent rotation combo

With Gomis and Payet set to rise, and Mings and Ritchie set to fall, I'm so tempted to bring my wildcard forward.

Alternatively, thinking Walcott & Sakho out for Payet & Gomis for a -4. Knee-jerk, but you only live once. Thoughts?

I want Gomis in for one of Sakho or Pelle.

Southampton have been poor the last couple of games. Not as defensively sound as they were last season, and as a result they can't attack as much because they can get caught out easily.

When Pelle's goal scoring run ends, he won't score for AGES. This could be that start of that draught. He scored 7 in pre season, one last week. Could be the time now.

Best use of 2 FT? Having a shocker so far, need to right the ship...

    Ruddy, Rudd
    Mert, Cedric, Huth, Coates, Taylor
    Hazard, Depay, Mane, Chadli, Bentaleb
    Aguero, Benteke, Sakho

    0.5 ITB

Thinking about Benteke to Gomis to free up $ for Depay > Sanchez next week (Trekkers is guaranteed to blank as my captain)

Despite some players in poor form, I can't justify wildcarding right now.

Mane at Watford, Rooney and Memphis at home to Newcastle and Sakho at home to Bournemouth. I might even go as far to say I have high hopes for that quartet next GW.

Yeah I think your right, and tbh I like you typing out your thoughts.

I'm swayed by a move Lens > Mahrez.

      Bandwagon? Yeah.

But a top move according to stats, form and fixtures till about gw12.

It would mean a hit to get in Aguero for gw4 though.

Yeah 4.5ppg from Lens I suppose isnt bad.

I just think Mahrez will has the form, fixtures and rising ownership is an issue if im not on and everyone else is, thats if he continues to score which im thinking he will in the short to medium run.

Losing Lens from an ownership perspective isnt a worry.

I'm only not getting Mahrez because his output is so different to the past, it seems like a flash in the pan. But form is a good thing to have on your side, and Leicester look like a good attacking side.

and Lens is doing nothing, so worth it IMO.

I thought Ranieri would be a good appointment and he likes to play attacking football.

Mahrez is more nailed than under that bozo previously and the shackles are off.

Penalty box touches, shots in the box, corners, frees, a pen - thats a lot of bang for £5.6m.

Throw some rising value into the mix and the fact others are boarding the train.

I kinda think it has to be done.

I'd certainly not talk anyone out of it. You're right, a lot of pros.

Already used my FT this week on getting Walcott out, though.

I may yet WC him in, in a week or two.

Who did you get for Walcott Trigg?

              I like the thought of:

              Hazard Sanchez Yaya Mahrez
              Aguero Deeney Benteke

as my front 7 in the next week or two.

              Means a backline of 5 x £4.5m defenders.

Sorry for repost. Stuck in dead post.

!!! Thoughts on this lads before I sleep and prices change !!!

    Schmeichel Schwarzer
    Azpi Cedric Huth Coates Franccis
    Haz Ayew Mane Sterling Wanyama
    Rooney Benteke Wilson*

    1. Wilson is a worry
    2. Can't bring in Mahrez coz of Keeper combo
    3. Exact fund and 1 FT to do Roo >> Kun

    Any Improvements ??

Better to have Mahrez points from time to time than Schwarzers 2-6 points once in a blue moon. Pick another 4.0

I'm noticing a lot of RMTs without Hazard, but I guess that's the easiest way to get Sanchez in. I can't really decide between the two!

How did everybody do? Got a green arrow even if it didn't count for a lot.

21 my total, with Gomez, Sanchez, Hazard and Kun to play.

Mane captain unfortunately, that's two 4's in a row from me, with Wally in GW1.

I might just create a second team to start GW3. It will more than likely score more than my actual team and pass me in the ranks *sigh*

I thought about starting afresh GW2. Only got 20pts GW1 so starting afresh is like getting an extra WC for the cost of 20pts. Not a bad price. Didn't do it though.

Not sure about either, I wouldnt bother. Pelle is on form and has good fixtures. Sakho has Bournemouth next week. Swansea have played long periods v 10 men so far and I think they're highly over rated on here

Got an assist but Spurs look shaky at the back. Only 4.5 option that plays for a big team though

Trying to justify my decision to activate wildcard.

Missing all the badwagons, no real captain option for next gw, 30 points in 2 gws so far. Wildcard needed to be activated to shake things up.

My team looked good on paper but no cs, goals and baps.

Maybe do a -4 hit and wait for one more gw. Long season ahead. Only 40 pts for me so far..
