West Ham’s Mauro Zarate is set to miss the next couple of league matches through injury. The Hammers close in on a deal for Alex Song. Ryan Bertrand remains sidelined for Southampton, United take up pursuit of Sadio Mane, whilst Tim Sherwood waits on the fitness of Villa’s new wide man, Adama Traore.

Zarate sidelined for two matches

Mauro Zarate picked up a knock in training and is now set to miss West Ham’s home trip against Bournemouth and trip to Liverpool.

The Scout Says: With Andy Carroll and Enner Valencia also injured, Slaven Bilic faces a dilemma up front. The Hammers boss utilised a 4-3-1-2 in recent matches, with Zarate alongside Diafra Sakho, and could turn to either Modibo Maiga or Elliot Lee if he decides to continue with the same system. Alternatively, Bilic could well switch to the 4-2-3-1 set-up he regularly employed during pre-season, fielding Dimitri Payet in “the hole” behind lone striker Sakho. The 6.5-priced Senegalese striker already looked like a strong pick-up for the Hammers’ upcoming fixtures, given that they welcome the Cherries and Newcastle to the Boleyn Ground by Gameweek 5. On the flip side, Sakho’s 3% ownership may well be concerned that he’s tallied just two goals in his previous 11 league starts for the Irons.

Song edges closer to Hammers encore

West Ham co-owner David Sullivan revealed that Alex Song is poised to pen a three-year deal with the club subject to him passing a medical:

“He’s a player we all admire and we just hope that the medical shows he’s in a sufficient state for us to gamble. He couldn’t physically pass a medical tomorrow, but if the medics say it’s just a technical thing and he’s only a couple of weeks away you’d take that gamble and hope they’re right. He’s still got two years left on his Barcelona contract and you’re signing a player on a three-year contract, so it’s a huge commitment. He’s a big earner, Alex. He’s injured at the moment, which is something you’ve got to weight up. But we’ve got until September 1st to make a decision.”

The Scout Says: Song’s return to the Irons would raise further doubts over the playing time of Reece Oxford. The 4.1-priced defender emerged as a potential gem by playing from start to finish against Arsenal in Gameweek 1 but was withdrawn after just 45 minutes of the Leicester City clash. Bilic later admitted that the distribution from midfield improved significantly upon the introduction of Oxford’s replacement, Pedro Obiang, suggesting that the 16-year-old could be consigned to bench duty for the time being. Oxford has been drafted in by over 42,000 FPL managers this week but Song’s arrival would surely push him further down the pecking order.

United lodge bid for Mane

Reports surfaced on Wednesday night that Manchester United have tabled a bid for Southampton winger Sadio Mane. Understandably, the official line out of Saints is that the Senegalese international is a key component of their team that they’re not willing to sell.

The Scout Says: In the event that Southampton are swayed by a substantial offer and Mane plots a course to the Red Devils, the former Red Bull Salzburg wide man could be an even more attractive Fantasy prospect at the 8.0 mark. While there’s doubtless greater competition for places at Old Trafford, Mane’s ability to function effectively in any of the three supporting roles in Louis Van Gaal’s 4-2-3-1 formation would hold him in good stead. Furthermore, the Dutch boss recently stated that he prefers to play attack-minded forwards in the number ten berth – rather than midfielders in the mould of Ander Herrera – with Mane certainly fulfilling that remit. Any possible move would perhaps heighten Graziano Pelle’s appeal as the main target for the Saints, whilst the likes of Adnan Januzaj and Marouane Fellaini would struggle for minutes at United if Mane made the switch.

Sherwood questions Traore’s fitness

Having watched Adama Traore complete 90 minutes for Aston Villa’s U21 outfit, Tim Sherwood believes that the Barcelona youth product is some way off being fit enough to be considered for first-team action:

“Adama looked very short of fitness to me. He’s going to need the exercise to get himself up to speed. I don’t expect too much too soon but I know exactly what we’ve bought there. He’s a player who’s developing and has got exciting talent for the future of the club. We’re hoping that he can produce something for us immediately but I don’t think we should be putting too much pressure on him.”

The Scout Says: For now, Sherwood has settled on a front three of Gabriel Agbonlahor, Scott Sinclair and Jordan Ayew, but with Rudy Gestede pushing for starts, Jack Grealish expected to make the Crystal Palace trip and Carles Gil not far behind, that’s subject to change over the coming weeks. As such, few Fantasy managers will be eyeing up the Villains’ forward line at present, despite the fact they boast a fixture schedule (cry, SUN, lei, WBA) conducive to attacking returns over the next four Gameweeks.

Koeman admits defence needs time

Ronald Koeman has attributed Southampton’s poor start on the defensive front to the fact that his new-look rearguard needs time to gel. Nonetheless, the Saints boss is confident his latest recruits can flourish if they put in the hours on the training pitch:

“I knew already maybe there was a problem because, if you talk about the defensive strengths of the Southampton team we had last season and a big part of keeping cleans, you are taking about certain positions – goalkeeper, four defenders and two controlling midfield players. Some asked me about Schneiderlin – he was just one of five different players (missing) in those positions last Saturday. It’s normal that you will lose something – the new players need time in that position, the team needs time to develop and have the same strengths as last season. If you’re missing five of the seven, that is one of the reasons we have already got five goals against us in two Premier League games. We need time and we need to develop and learn, we need training sessions.”

Koeman also offered an update on the fitness of Saints’ squad, revealing that Ryan Bertrand won’t be reinstated until after the international break:

“Steven Caulker will come back to the squad. He’s back from illness but the rest is the same. They are progressing well (Jordy and Ryan). I think Ryan needs two weeks more. I hope he will be 100 per cent after international duty. Jordy will then be fit as well and that makes the team stronger.”

The Scout Says: Bertrand’s continued absence will allow the 4.0-priced Matt Targett to temporarily remain as the Saints’ left-back, whilst Caulker’s return will seem him vie with Maya Yoshida for the centre-back berth alongside Jose Fonte. After shipping three at home to Everton, though, Fonte has been sold by over 70,000 FPL managers, with the Saints’ slow start to the season persuading many to look elsewhere. Although the next three fixtures look promising (wat, NOR, wba), it may well be that Fantasy managers reassess Koeman’s outfit once the likes of Bertrand and Clasie are back in the fold as they look to rediscover the form that harvested 15 clean sheets last time around.

If I was wildcarding this team would tempt me...

    Courtois- McCarthy
Gomez - Galloway- Davies - Muniesa - Targett
Hazard - Silva - Sanchez- Mahrez - Westy
    Aguero - Gomes - Wilson

Obviously risk in defence but enough option to trade if a player is dropped.

But if you so go with that team most o the front 8 will be exempt from transferring out (Wilson, Gomes, Mahrez the exceptions). So you could focus on making sure you have £4.5m defenders who play.

And two of them are imminent benchings, another could be rotated at a moment's notice and another plays for a terrible defence with apocalyptic fixtures.

    bottomed out so re-posting:

Watford's defensive stats look good but of course this is based on just two games and one of them was against a West brom side that never crossed the halfway line. Can anyone who has watched Watford advise on whether they look solid at the back?

Repost due to being bottom of last page

Thoughts on this team please. Good to go? Would like to hear some thoughts.

    Gk- Ruddy, Butland
Def- Darmian, Gomez, Ben Davies, Williams, Targett
Mid- Hazard, Silva, Ozil, Mahrez, Westwood
    Att- Aguero, Gomis, Defoe

Alternatively I could have Sanchez + Payet instead of Hazard + Ozil and then bolster defence.

Hasn't played there much in his career, but he was put there in his only pre-season match, and switched out there when Janmaat was off.

I'd personally prefer Anita playing RB, and keeping Mbmeba at CB than bringing either of the tactless duo of Saylor and Williamson into the fold, but I can't be sure that's what Mclaren believes.

Well he's still the most nailed on, being captain imo, and you've admitted yourself he's been excellent so far. Until he shows signs of the form that got him dropped last season, there can't be another answer.

Yes, but Pellegrini rotates his full-backs on a whim, whereas the CB's are more likely to be dropped/rotated when they show poor form

This, I really don't think you can argue that Kompany is just as at risk rotation-wise as Kolarov.

Sure but you look at Pellegrini's message and it appears Mangala and Otamendi were team mates. It appears they are the future CB pairing of the club.

Yeah, you're right actually.. I completely agree he was awful last year, and he is at risk if there's a return to that level of performance, but at the moment at least he must surely be considered to be the first defender on the team sheet, which was the question.

I was being a little sly with that question. As I said, its not as clear cut as you might think. Nobody is truly nailed on, Kompany a little less so now with the signing of Otamendi

"He is an established international for one of the best nations in world football [Argentina] and I have no doubt that he has the right mentality to fit into a squad where he will find many familiar faces, including Eliaquim [Mangala] and Fernando who he played alongside in Portugal.

"As a footballer, Nicolas has all of the qualities to be a success in the Premier League -- he's strong, he's excellent in the tackle and he's very good technically. I am sure he will become another Argentine player our fans will enjoy watching."

Kompany, but none are nailed on really except Hart. I mean, I'd be extremely surprised if Kompany was benched, but Mangala and Otamendi are excellent defenders, and Kompany could have another bad spell.

But there's more to defending that tackles etc, stats give no weight to positioning, nullifying threats and attacks before they've even begun, leaving no gaps in the defence etc. Just as goals/assists don't tell the whole story for an attacking player (I'm thinking of people like Ozil who create space and threats that way), I don't think that table necessarily reflects form.

Nailed on vs most nailed on is the key component here.

Is Kompany nailed on? No, the same could almost be said of any player, there's always a chance of rotation.

As for most nailed on - I'd say it's Kompany still, but time will tell.

Kolarov irregardless of form will be rotated IMO, especially when the Champions League begins.
Kompany was awful at times last season and that was why he was dropped, so as has already been said, the fact he is captain doesn't make him immune to rotation.
However, he is by far the most nailed City defender IMO, but that is mainly due to how the other 3 aren't remotely nailed as soon as the group stages of the CL start.

How is this a hot topic? Kompany not nailed because he was dropped last year?! In any club if a player plays poorly enough he will be dropped. But so far he has shown no signs of last year's form and as such at the minute he is nailed.

"Nailed on" usually refers to "not arbitrarily rotated on the whim of a manager".

If Kompany's form his the floor and he's on a run of shocking performances, you'd be shipping him and any other City defenders out anyway so it doesn't matter if his nailed on-ness is contingent on form.

Pelegrini isn't going to rotate Kompany. So he's nailed on for as long as you want him in your team.

    16. Marstar
      • 13 Years
      10 years, 5 months ago

Kompany is the most 'nailed on' defender.

I define nailed on as "fixture proof". Form, while not mutually exclusive, does not guarantee a starting XI place.

For example, Kolarov, regardless of form, has and will continue to rotated based on the fixtures.

Kompany will not be rotated because City are playing X team or against Y striker.

There is no reason to rotate Kompany at this stage of the season, and the 'assumption' that Otamendi puts Komany's starting XI position under immediate thread is speculative at best.

Pellegrini's comments provide no further insight into Otamendi's position beyond him having the right mentality to fit into the "squad".

You may have the jitters as to his job security, but unless you can substantiate it beyond "he was dropped on form last year" when that prerequisite is not being met currently ... and the positive comments of a manager on his latest signing ... agree to disagree with your opposers and move on.

Which defences do you think will be better or worse than last season for FPL?

Too soon to draw any great conclusions, but it looks as if Sunderland and Southampton will struggle to match their impressive CS totals from last season (13 and 15), whilst Manchester United and West Ham ought to improve on their tallies, imo (11 and 9).

13 CS for Swansea last season... They rode their luck a bit, looking at the stats, so perhaps fair to expect a similar level of CS, but a higher level of performance?

Stoke, hmm. Shawcross and N'Zonzi are big losses, they seem to have mostly strengthened in attacking areas. The fixtures are tempting, and I do like Butland, though.

Not sure on Leicester, either. They've returned to four at the back, which they were very leaky with (most of their clean sheets for the season came in that run in the last ten games or so), and look to be mostly an attacking side on early evidence.

Chelsea are a bit of a puzzle!

Perhaps due to the opposition, to some extent? Certainly a terrible start from them, though. I'm still tempted by Azpi on my WC, find it difficult to see West Brom troubling them at the weekend (didn't manage a shot on target at Watford, and Pulis will be even more cautious than usual after playing two strikers against City led to them getting thumped).

I think clean sheets will be down overall, following the injection of creative attacking players in mid-table clubs. This leaves me unsure of what to do defence-wise. Do I go for 5x 4.5 defenders, or perhaps one pricier option, and 4x 4.5?
