We call upon a trip of lesser-owned midfielders for your perusal this morning as we scour the market for some overlooked weekend options. Arsenal’s home clash with Liverpool brings a certain Welshman to our attentions, whilst we have our eye on a couple of options for Norwich’s head-to-head with Stoke at Carrow Road.

Aaron Ramsey

For those Fantasy managers searching for a cheaper source of Arsenal coverage than the 11.0-priced Alexis Sanchez, Aaron Ramsey (8.5) could be the solution. Having been fielded in a deeper-lying role for the Gunners’ season-opener against West Ham United, the Wales international was stationed on the right flank at Selhurst Park, resulting in double the volume of attempts (four up from two). Furthermore, only Sanchez (six) and Philippe Coutinho (four) fired off more shots inside the box than Ramsey (three) in the previous Gameweek.

Although Arsenal’s next test is a home tie against a Liverpool side that’s yet to concede, Arsene Wenger’s troops rattled four past the Reds in the corresponding fixture last term and boasted an average of 2.15 goals per game at the Emirates. In addition, Liverpool conceded more goals away from home (28) than the likes of Hull City and Sunderland last season, so Ramsey will confident of finding space between the lines to carve out shooting opportunities.

Nathan Redmond

Priced at just 5.5, Redmond bagged two goals in as many matches, tallying 11 points in his first start of the season against Sunderland last week. The England U21 international proved to be a thorn in the Black Cats’ side, ranking fifth among midfielders for penalty box touches (seven) last Gameweek and tallying two shots inside the box.

Canaries boss Alex Neil recently spoke on the rapid improvement of Redmond over the past six months – a notion that is bolstered by the increase in his attacking output. Redmond has notched five goals in his last six appearances for the Canaries, perhaps reflecting an evolution in his game than a rare purple patch.

Norwich’s excellent run of fixtures lends greater value to the recruitment of their attacking assets. Aside from home ties against Stoke and Bournemouth in the next three Gameweeks, it’s not until a Gameweek 11 clash against Manchester City that Redmond would face one of the Premier League sides that finished in the top six last season.

Xherdan Shaqiri

After missing out last week due to suspension, Stoke’s marquee signing Xherdan Shaqiri looks in line for his debut bow away to Norwich later this afternoon. Slotting into a side that chalked up two more big chances (five) than any other side in Gameweek 2, the Swiss international could cause all manner of problems for the Premier League new boys with his fleet-footed trickery.

Notwithstanding his lack of playing time (747 minutes) at Inter Milan, Shaqiri posted some eye-catching underlying statistics. A shot frequency of one every 24.9 minutes would have bettered all midfielders in England’s top tier last term, with Alexis Sanchez (25.4) coming closest to the Switzerland international. Moreover, Shaqiri’s key pass frequency (22 minutes) would also have placed him top in the distribution charts ahead of Mesut Ozil (27.8), underlining his latent potential to deliver strong attacking returns

Beyond the Canaries match-up, Stoke embark on a quartet of fixtures (WBA, ars, LEI, BOU) that includes three favourable meetings at the Britannia Stadium. With many Fantasy managers playing their Wildcard this week and plumping for the likes of Andre Ayew and Nacer Chadli at his price bracket, the 7.0-priced Shaqiri represents an alluring leftfield alternative.

Just wanted to look at the reason why Aguero has only scored once against Everton in the last 3 away encounters. Turns out it's because through injury he's only played 51 minutes at Goodison in the last three yrs in the Prem Lg. 1 goal every 51 mins away to Everton - I'll take that gladly.

Everton v Man City Jan 2015
Aguero makes sub appearance after coming back from injury. Plays 23 mins.

Everton v Man City 2014 Aguero goal - inj in 28th min and withdrawn - man C won 3-1

Everton v Man City 2013 Aguero did
not play . Everton won 2-0

The main reason I posted that was because of seen some comments suggesting that Aguero had a poor record against Everton as a reason for not captaining him. Turns out he has a poor record because he barely played against them away.

2 goals in 7 games against Everton. That's the fact. 😕

Whether it matters is down to judgement.

You need to look at the games and whether he played. It's good to have opinions but you do need to back them up with research as well. He has one goal away against Everton because he barely played. That's the fact of the matter. 🙂

Just checked at home too. He's barely played those matches too due to injury. When he did start and play most of the match he scored.

As you say whether it matters or not is a matter of opinion - but just saying 2 goals in 7 is misleading as it negates the fact that through his many injuries he's barely played against Everton. So given his minutes 2 in 7 is actually a fine record . 🙂

PS Having counted Aguero's goals against different opponents match by match over 4 seasons, I think it can be said that I HAVE done some research.

The question is whether it is relevant. Is a players scoring record against a specific opponent a matter of happenstance or is there a psychological factor that sets in (as many professional footballers suggest)?

You have to use judgement on that.

The match-by-match detail of minutes played is research of more depth than I had done. Hence the thanks. But the underlying question is about Aguero's reaction to playing Everton. Is it just a "normal" match for him? Is it one when he walks on the pitch "knowing" he will score? Is it one he has a tricky record in with fewer goals and maybe an injury or two?

Assessing that is the judgement part.

Finally, here's a statistic from a broader view. In 4 PL seasons Aguero has scored 43 goals away including 8 braces and no hat-tricks. In the same time he has scored 69 home goals with 9 braces and 5 hat-tricks. He's a better captain option at home (as almost all players are).

I think there is undeniably a psychological factor that sets in regarding some opponents that leads to improved performances.
Using golf as an analogy, I find that, as a regular golfist, there are particular holes, on particular courses, where I always play well because I really 'fancy them' after having done well at them previously. These holes are no longer or shorter than countless others I may play or are they any easier in any particular way. But, with no more than a minutia of subtle differences compared with other holes, in addition to the 'confidence' of doing well that I take to them, I can always score well at them. I'd suggest that this was almost all a psychological effect and one borne of previous history.

So I believe wholeheartedly in the relevance of the 'Horses for courses' adage.

I think so. Kolarov still has clichy in the wings. Also the downgrade from Kompany to another defender is much easier - more choice. Kompany also appears to have more attacking intent at set plays . Long term I think Kompany is the more sensible choice , but I'm not in any way saying kolarov is a bad choice - he's just not my type of player.

Aguero, when he is on form he is fixture proof. Based on the small amount of game so far this season I think he is in form. I did consider Depay against Newcastle but I have a funny feeling that while United might dominate it will be low scoring (Cue Depay and Rooney brace). I also considered Gomis against Sunderland. But ultimately I think that Aguero is the safest bet this gameweek.

    Got last on last page

Havent posted one of these all weeks long, keeping with my 5 RMT for season

    Any help appreciated

    Mcc Butland

    Francis Richards Kolarov Shaw Gomez

    Silva Mahrez Sanchez Depay Westwood

    Kun Gomis Diouf

    0.6 ITB

Need to lose one of Kol or Gomez both rotation risks and both I stand to lose 0.1 on

Leaning to Kol > Sagna. Leaving 1.1 ITB for Silva- Haz or Gomis > Pelle/Lukaku

How about this team for gameweek 3. Using my wildcard:

    Butland (Schmeichel)
    Darmian Williams Ward (Kompany Gomez)
    Depay Toure Ayew Mahrez Chadli
    Kun Diouf (Deeney)

    2,3 ITB

Changed my mind a lot about the defence, especially Ward. Also loved to bring on Sanchez but dont have the cash needed...

Trouble choosing my starting side this week...

    Romero
    Azp - Bellerin - Cedric
    Haz - Sanchez - Mahrez - Sinclair - Benta
    Kun - Kane

Bench: McCarthy - Gomez - Huth - Zarate (Injured)

No WC used.... unlucky with the Zarate injury. Any better starting team that I can make?

Seen a couple of teams with it but they have no Darmian + Kompany at the back. Instead they have two cheaper alternatives from their teams.

    I need a 4.4 defender.

With Kaboul injured, would you go JOS or Coates? I know... Sunderland are cack but I do think they'll tighten up soon and this will be my 5th choice defender anyway.
