Jose Mourinho completed his second summer coup by adding the highly-rated left-back Abdul Baba Rahman to Chelsea’s ranks last week. The versatile 21-year-old – who can also operate as a midfielder or winger – arrives at Stamford Bridge for a hefty £17.7 million from Bundesliga side Augsburg and is determined to make an instant impact at both ends of the pitch:

“I am ready to play and to fight for the club, to give my best. I think competition for places is very important because without it the club wouldn’t go further. It’s a big challenge for me and I’m going to fight hard to win trophies with this club and to achieve its aim…I’m a left back and, as a defender, it’s important for me to be strong in the tackle, which I always try to be. I also like to get forward as much as possible and help the team in attack. It’s very important because obviously if you can provide crosses from out wide there is a higher chance of providing assists and chances for the team.”

THE HISTORY

Three years ago, Rahman was plying his trade in his home country of Ghana and now he is ready to take on the English top flight. The full-back worked his way up through the Ghanaian leagues and was scouted by top European clubs such as Arsenal, Manchester City and Parma but in the summer of 2012, chose to join newly-promoted Bundesliga side SpVgg Greuther Fürth.

By December 2012, Rahman had cemented a starting role with his new side and played every minute of the club’s league matches from the turn of 2013 to the end of that season. However, the defender didn’t manage to save his side from an immediate relegation into the German second division for the 2013-14 campaign. What followed was a turbulent year for the Ghanaian, as he struggled for pitch time and was rotated in and out of the side. In those two seasons he didn’t pick up a single goal and only managed a sole assist.

However, as the 2014-15 campaign started, Rahman immediately went about improving those figures. In Fürth’s second fixture of the season, he bagged a brace and an assist in a performance that helped force through the already imminent £1.75 million move to Augsburg the day afterwards. That transfer proved to be the making of the youngster, as a series of defensively astute and clinically attacking performances saw the defender mark his name as one of Europe’s brightest young sparks. Rahman ended last season with four assists from 31 appearances (29 starts) in the Bundesliga.

Despite his tender age the full-back has already become first-choice for his country, usurping Leicester City’s Jeffrey Schlupp. He played every minute of the 2015 African Cup of Nations, as well as the qualifying matches, picked up three assists in those fixtures and spearheaded his side’s charge to second place.

THE PROSPECTS

With Filipe Luis returning to Atletico Madrid during the summer, Chelsea clearly needed competition for the left-back berth over the upcoming campaign. The versatile Cesar Azpilicueta offers Mourinho an option in both full-back positions, with the Spaniard affording the Blues an alternative to Branislav Ivanovic on the right of the back-four.

Although the Chelsea defence was relatively settled last term – with Ivanovic and John Terry playing every minute of their title-winning season – this year could be different. As we saw only last week, where Mourinho hauled off his captain at the break for the first time in his career under the Portuguese manager, changes may be afoot and Ivanovic’s sluggish start to the season could also be a concern.

Both Jefferson Montero and Raheem Sterling made a mockery of the Serb in the opening two Gameweeks of the season, with his lack of pace exposed due to his manager’s insistence on playing a high defensive line. Rahman, however, is quick enough to deal with even the fastest of Premier League wingers. That pace adds to the full-back’s Fantasy appeal as he regularly bombs forward – he dribbled past an opponent 44 times last season, created 24 goal scoring chances in his 31 appearances and produced more crosses than any player in the German top-flight in 2014/15.

It’s not just his attacking potential that catches the eye, though. In last season’s Bundesliga, the Ghanaian made more tackles (108) than any other player, winning an incredible 83% of those challenges, and also succeeding in 67% of aerial battles. He averaged more tackles, interceptions, dribbles and crosses per minute than Azpilicueta and seems to possess both the attacking threat and aerial prowess of Ivanovic, but with added pace to burn.

Having conceded five times in two matches, it’s clear that something is amiss with the Blues’ backline right now, though. In the first two Gameweeks, they allowed their opponents more big chances (eight) than any side and sit second-worst for shots conceded inside the box (23) – a far cry from the defence that chalked up the most clean sheets (17) in 2014/15 and shipped fewer goals (31) than any other team.

As we’ve seen before with Mourinho sides, though, Chelsea’s defence – at their resilient best – have proven fixture-proof time and again and it’s a little too early to tell just how much of an impact Rahman will have. If he eats away at Ivanovic or Azplicueta’s minutes, though, and Mourinho continues to curtail Terry’s pitch time, pinpointing a viable route into the Blues backline could prove trickier than ever before.

At 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), though, the new boy’s uncertainty of starts will ensure we steer well clear for now until there are signs he can establish himself as a regular. Given that Mourinho described him as “a very good young left-back with potential” in yesterday’s press conference, it remains to be seen whether Rahman can nail down a starting berth or struggle for minutes like his predecessor.

    Bottomed.

Alright lad's need some opinions on my my team, and if it's worth WCing to this beauty.

    Current team:

    Rutland
    Azpi, Kosc, Williams, Huth, Targett
    Silva, Ozil, Payet, Chadli, Fletcher
    Aguero, Pelle, Sakho (0 FT's)

    WC Team:

    Fabianski, McCarthy
    Shaw, Kolarov, Lovern/Naughton, Francis, Muneisa
    Silva, Sanchez, Shaqiri, Chadli, Mahrez
    Aguero, Gomis, Graham

    (3-5-2)

Really tempted by this team. Opinions lads?

          Nice.

That team doesn't need wildcarding, it's fine.

You'd be far better to hold off until the international break at least. I'd be tempted to go to GW13 and wildcard then.

Do you recommend I take a hit for Mahrez? How about Sakho, not playing amazing football at this moment. Double Hammers attack heading into this GW against Pool. Still stuck with Targett, as you could see only 3 players in my WC team are in my normal team, that tells me something. Terrible rank + TV to go along with it.

TV is pretty meaningless right now and wildcarding won't help it much anyway.

Leicester's fixtures get gradually tougher and I think Mahrez already had most of his rises, I'd pass him by now. Chasing the points he already scored will just lock you behind others ahead of you that have him. He's not going to score every week. 😕

Sakho and Payet have been playing well and have very nice fixtures, I'd keep them. A West Ham double up isn't ideal but not worth taking a hit to change. I'd be taking a strict no-hits tactic unless your arm is twisted. Payer could very easily outscore Mahrez over the next 6 weeks (and probably will).

My next 2 transfers would probably be to save for GW5 and then do a double FT Koscielny to WBA (Chester/Dawson) and Pelle to Benteke for GW6.

GW 13 is a big fixture shift and wildcarding then will give you a big potential jump. You can migrate well from what you have to then just using FTs to adjust for fixtures and form as you go. That's certainly what I'd do.

            Thanks for the advice.

I have to Disagree about Mahrez, he looks like the real deal (In FPL). Could of easily scored 15+ points today. Can't seem to fit him in though.

I guess you're right about Payet/Sakho. But looking in the next 3 GW's they have City and Liverpool away. Can't see them getting anything from those games.

            1. Ruth_NZ
              • 10 Years
              10 years, 3 months ago

My comments about Mahrez are considered, I think he's the real deal too and he has been in my team since GW2. But if I were in your position I wouldn't be chasing the points he already scored when you already have good midfielders. The only one I'd consider removing for Mahrez would be Chadli.

As for West Ham - well every player has the odd bad fixture. But West Ham have Newcastle, Norwich, Sunderland, Palace and Watford amongst their next 8 fixtures, those are good ones from the attacking point of view I think.

If you are dead set on taking a hit I'd do Sakho to Diouf and then the 2 transfers I mentioned above for GW6. That's my take anyway. GL.

Looking at the fixtures I think maybe stick with your current team
Sakho and Payet would worry me and no mahrez but hard to justify Payet to mahrez for a hit if you brought him in last week

I've been setting up my team for next week and I've noticed I've got a selection dilemma on my hands.

    1) Play Gomis vs Darmian
    2) Play Payet vs Gomez
    (Subs are Westwood and Richards)

Am I right in thinking that United are rather weak at defending set pieces so Gomis' strength in the box might come handy?

Gomis at home I guess "safer"
United didn't look too bad in the air yesterday with balls whipped in
They've no threat going forward aerial mind

Agree with this. Also think people jumping to sell Sakho are forgetting that after 3 games some players simply have anomalously good or bad finishing success. Those players are all similarly threatening.

Yeah, the right wing is practically non existent right now with Swans heavily depend on Montero, thus make him free to roam.

At one point he practically shoved Gomis for a header, which Panti saved brilliantly.

He needs to cut off some silly foul tho.

West ham fixtures made me favor Payet..He got no point share yesterday though..plus I too have Gomis and that holds me back from picking Ayew too. The reason being its good if they have a great game like they are having right now. But what when they have a bad one? That would make me suffer on two positions in my team if I double up on Swansea. So it's more of a damage limitation in the worst case scenario I guess!

I watched yesterday's game, and he just didn't have the supply. Lamela was really poor and after yesterday's performance, I won't be surprised if he gets sold before the transfer window closes. Kane has the quality, but you can see that he was cutting a frustrated figure up top for Spurs. They were too slow in building attacks, and did not have enough penetration inspite of having a lot of possession. I feel Kane is just not worth the price at the moment, with cheaper strikers like Gomis, Diouf amd Wilson in such good form.

Couldn't catch the West Ham game yesterday, as I was too busy watching the Mahrez show. At the time, most opinions of him were that he was very poor, but how did Payet perform overall? Was it just an off day for him, or is his potential waning? Just brought him on WC, it'll be a pity if I have to remove him so soon.

Given Wilson run of fixtures he surely is a steal at 5.4.bearing in mind that if he scores say 3 in the next 6 (very doable), we could be looking at a Harry kane esque bandwagon. Could then be easily worth at least .2 gain in team value. Which is a handy return for a cheap player with good fixtures.

    A) Richards (SUN)

    B) Payet (liv)

    C) Targett (NOR)

    D) Payet > 7.5mid with FT and play

Personally I would play attackers ahead of defenders.

And Liverpool not really good at defending set-pieces, although they already keep 2 CS (who would thought that!).

Problem is, Chelsea don't rotate with City until GW14 - whenever Costa/Hazard are at home, so is Aguero, and his fixtures are brilliant. So, I'd never captain either one of them. Would need to drop Sanchez or Silva to fit them in, so they'd need to show serious form to convince that they're going to outscore either of those two.

You have a chance to maximise in City before an excellent run of fixtures. I'd get a City defender in

      Kompany or Kolarov

I have a feeling Clichy will get minutes next week, though

Reckon this might be right that kolarov is rested against Watford. Which would be frustrating

    Oh my bad luck...
Baker in starting xi & my bench is Wilson(17) // Mert // Francis(6)...
Surely Mert will play & will get into my starting xi as a sub for baker with no more than 2 points...!!!
What a disastrous start to the season...!!!

The rise % growth will increase tonight when Agüero blanks and the frustrated owners kneejerk him out for Wilson.

My H2H with Home Run Baker essentially boils down to:

    .
    HRB: Silva, Sanchez & Kosc

    GB: Aguero & Kolarov +1pt

Nope. Played because Janmaat was suspended, and Mbemba moved to right back. That said, the Newcastle defence had a great game, so he might keep his spot for the moment.
