After quickly concluding a deal to bring Pedro to Stamford Bridge last week, following reported interest from Manchester United throughout the summer, Jose Mourinho immediately handed the Spaniard a starting role for the champions’ trip to West Brom.

It took the new signing just 84 minutes to provide a snapshot of what we can expect in the Premier League. Priced at 9.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Pedro scored the opening goal in the Blues’ 3-2 victory at the Hawthorns, while he also provided the assist for Diego Costa’s strike and earned maximum bonus points on Sunday afternoon.

Having served up a 13-point debut haul, Pedro been subject to a major bandwagon over the last three days, with 240,000 new owners acquired in FPL. With that in mind, we assess the Spaniard’s weekend display as Fantasy managers scramble for his signature.

Chelsea Average Positions versus West Brom

ta

Handed a role on the right of Mourinho’s default 4-2-3-1 set-up, Pedro (number 17) afforded the Blues a little more width than Eden Hazard (number 10) on the opposite flank, whereas Willian (hidden by Radamel Falcao’s number 9) dropped a little deeper in possession in his role behind Diego Costa (number 19).

What’s also noticeable here is that Branislav Ivanovic (number 2) was very withdrawn when on the ball in the right-back berth. Indeed, Cesar Azpilicueta (number 28) was on a par with his fellow full-back when on the ball at the Hawthorns.

Chelsea Involvement
ta

Looking at the involvement stats, Pedro saw far less of the ball than the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Hazard, with 92 and 91 touches respectively – his 54 touches were exactly the same as lone striker Costa. Whereas Fabregas and Hazard produced a touch every 1.0 and 1.1 minutes apiece, Pedro managed a touch every 1.6 minutes – of Chelsea’s ten outfield starters, only Kurt Zouma (1.7) and Ivanovic (2.0) were worse off here.

When you analyse the final third numbers, though, it’s a different story. Pedro jumps up to second behind Hazard for touches (34 to 40), and was again more or less identical to Costa (33).

In terms of frequency of passes received, once again Hazard (every 1.4) and Fabregas (every 1.5) are the main men here. Given that they ranked first and second for key passes (100 and 93) in 2014/15, it’s little surprise that Chelsea are looking to get the duo on the ball as much as possible.

Pedro, on the other hand, is no playmaker. He won’t hog the ball. Instead, his pace, intelligence and movement off the ball into space will be a key facet of the champions’ attack, with compatriot Fabregas explaining that he gives the Blues something different:

“I knew straight away that he would make an impact. It is something that we don’t have in our team, this pacey player that goes behind defenders, that goes one against one. He goes behind defences and stretches them, while Willian and Eden (prefer) the ball to their feet. The mentality of this guy is fantastic. I’m very happy for him.”

What is also noticeable is Ivanovic’s lack of impact as an attacking outlet from the right-back berth. Granted, there could be a number of reasons for this. It may be a lack of confidence after his poor displays in the first two matches or perhaps an indication that his partnership with Pedro on the flank will need more work. Alternatively, Mourinho may have simply told him to rein in his forward forays for now.

Nonetheless, in the final third, the Serbian was overshadowed by Azpilicueta for touches (nine to 12) and passes received (four to ten). Given that he averaged 26.5 touches and 13.5 passes received in the final third over the first two Gameweeks, though, Sunday saw a significant drop-off.

Chelsea Distribution
ta

Looking at the distribution stats, Pedro’s numbers are once again more in line with Costa than Hazard. Whilst Hazard and Fabregas led the way for successful passes (64 and 62), Pedro and Costa were neck-and-neck on 29 apiece. Hazard again bettered his Blues team-mates for successful passes in the final third (25) and served up five key passes for the visitors, which was joint-top for the Gameweek.

Pedro, meanwhile, managed 16 successful passes in the final third – just four less than Fabregas – and, despite failing with five of his six crosses, he still completed 84.2% of his passes in this area, second only to Hazard’s 86.2%. The new boy was bettered only by the Belgian for chances created (three to five), with Costa just behind on two.

In defence, Ivanovic again posted inferior numbers to Azpilicueta, with six successful passes in the final third to eight. The Spaniard also produced far more passes (52 to 31) and successful passes (37 to 26) than the Serbian. Worrying for Ivanovic’s owners, his stats were inferior to Gameweek 1-2, where he averaged 10.5 successful passes in the final third and 3.5 crosses – on Sunday, he produced one single, unsuccessful delivery from out wide.

Chelsea Goal Threat
ta
Costa leads the way this time, with four attempts on goal – all inside the box, which was joint-top for forwards in the Gameweek. Whilst Hazard matched the Spain international for touches in the box (six apiece), he registered just one wayward attempt at the Hawthorns. Although he upped his creativity at the weekend, the Belgian continues to struggle for goal threat and has managed just three attempts in as many appearances.

Pedro, again, was relatively similar to Costa. The new boy produced five touches in the box and a total of three attempts, with two arriving inside the area. Willian also managed a trio of efforts but failed to find the net – perhaps no surprise given that he scored just 3.6% of his chances in the previous campaign.

Conclusions
Obviously, it’s impossible to make any assumptions based on a single match but it’s fair to say that Pedro’s impact in the final third was immediately impressive.

Obviously, it’s nigh on impossible that he’ll average three shots and as many key passes every match but his contribution in the final third – relative to the rest of his team-mates – could well be more in line with Costa, as opposed to Hazard, judging by Sunday’s statistics. As highlighted above, the duo’s underlying numbers for involvement, distribution and goal threat were very similar, though Costa did have a clear edge for shots inside the box.

Whilst Pedro proves an enticing alternative to Hazard in FPL, particularly for those struggling for budget, we perhaps need a few more matches to ascertain whether he’ll prove a viable rival. Given that his impact saw Hazard turn in his most creative display of the season, and Costa produce his most threatening performance, there’s every chance that Pedro’s acquisition could ultimately boost the pair’s points hauls, rather than lessen their potential for Fantasy managers.

Ivanovic owners, meanwhile, will be hoping that the weekend was just a temporary blip and the Serbian can rediscover the raiding runs down the right that were such a feature of Chelsea’s title-winning campaign last term.

Between Gomis and Darmain it's always Gomis to play. SWA has goals in them.

Clean sheet odds are at best 40% in a typical game and this is away to SWA.

I know it isn't perfect. But I think I am going to put my head down continue to accept the price drops and save a transfer this week. The most useful transfer would be one in defence but bugger it.

    Butland
    Cedric - Lescott - Sagna
    Mahrez - Payet - Hazard - Mane
    Wilson - Rooney - Aguero

    Bench - Huth - Williams - Bentelab

Sure the defence aint great for this week. Lescott probably will not play. But I think Mane will play and has a favourable fixture so I find it difficult to justify the transfer this week. I also find it it difficult to sell Rooney as he just got a hat trick in Europe. Probably the wrong call but Payet has been playing pretty well despite the price drop.

Should leave me pretty flexible the following week. It should be ok without being spectacular.

I have thought about the Rooney transfer for the last few days and really was set on taking him out. 3 goals kind of made me think a bit. It isn't as if Benteke has even scored a goal really. (HIs Bournmouth one shouldn't have been). Diouf was where I was heading.

But surely Pulis is going to get his defence together soon? If I keep Rooney one more week and don't spend the transfer I can get rid of Mane to a Sanchez or Pedro or somesuch next week as well.

Another choice could be Ayew v. Redmond? Ayew's at home and Soton's defense looked good in the 3-5-2 so I'm favoring him.

  9. How Long is 'For The Long Run'?
    • 12 Years
    10 years, 5 months ago

Just want to post my thoughts on Ryan's statement "Nothing is for the long run in FPL" as I feel it could generate some discussion on this new page. So here goes:

The way I see it, if you're playing your WC now and looking to save the other for say GW30 or later, that's 26 weeks or more where you have to manage carefully. If you're playing a largely hit free game (1 a month tops) that makes the average stay of a player in your team about 10 gameweeks. Now that's the average, that means some have to stay longer maybe 15, 20 weeks or more. To me that's long term, especially with the removal of the mandatory January Wildcard.

When I look at a transfer I ask myself do I want this guy for this week? For the next 3 weeks? For 10 weeks? If I can't say yes to all 3, is it really a good transfer now?

    1. NABIL - FPL otai
      • 13 Years
      10 years, 5 months ago

History tells me that I need not to be afraid to take hits if it's going to benefit me medium to long term, i.e potential price rise and points return. When I take a hit, I look around 3-5 GWs and do not expect immediate return, especially if it involves bringing on a stud.

      1. Joggers Nipple
        • 16 Years

Agree, early hits are no problem to me to get rid of mis firing players and get the in form ones. Price drops are more brutal at the start of the season too

Yep, it's just enough time frame imo. Usually after 4-5 GW,s other potential picks will start to shine, and you don;t want to miss another (proven) wagon

Depends on the position for me. Like you I look short (this week), medium (3 weeks) and long-term (5-18 weeks - generally 5-6 weeks for a forward and playing mid, 6-10 for a defender, 10+ for a cheap bench midfield and up to 18 for a goalkeeper).

Having said that, while I might look at those long-term timeframes, I don't expect to keep many of them that long.

I feel like this is flawed, because there are certain players that you just aren't going to change out like Aguero, Silva/Yaya, Sanchez, Goalkeepers... most changes will be messing around with cheaper mids and forwards

        • 12 Years
        10 years, 5 months ago

yeah so the way its looking I'm playing around with

          Forward 2, 3
          Mids 3, 4
          Defenders 2,3

So ~6 which doesn't seem like I'll need too many hits

You're right. Saying that I'm happy to take hits and have done more than average every season I've played.

I look at 4-8 fix when I bring in an attacker or 6-10 for a defender.

But some players are such good value or so attacking that I don't care about fix. Right now they would include Mahrez, Sanchez, Aguero and (you might be surprised here) Ayew.

        • 12 Years
        10 years, 5 months ago

I like your variation on event horizons for attacking and defensive players, do you have that because you see attackers as easier to cash in on in short bursts of form or because defensive returns are harder to pick short term?

In my experience I tend to hold on to defenders for longer so I might as well reflect this in my decisions. Also attackers tend to run hotter or colder so it is sometimes worth getting in someone with 4 juicy fixtures where they could get a load of massive hauls.

            • 12 Years
            10 years, 5 months ago

Cheers, I've got Wilson in explicitly for the next 3 weeks explicitly with short term form/fixtures in mind but its not something I like to do often as it schedules in too many mandatory FTs further down the line.

Defenders are also about the team. Years back when Stoke were piling up the clean sheets you just wanted the cheapest involvement possible. This is looking at clean sheets not attacking points.
This is compared to the mids and forwards where you need the right one, they will naturally be transferred more due to form and fixtures imo

    4. Joggers Nipple
      • 16 Years

Nice, to me its also about who are 'keepers' the ones i will give time too

      Sanchez
      Williams
      Yaya
      Aguero
      Westwood
      Darmian prob
      Hazard prob

The positions i play around with are
      forward 2 and 3
      midfield 3 and 4
      Defenders 3 and 4

Means i am looking at less positions to move things around. Of course injury and massive loss of form can change this but its a rough approximation of my thinking

        • 12 Years
        10 years, 5 months ago

Cheers so the high churn in these positions allows you to cash in or short term fixtures better knowing they'll be out quickly? Also are you happy taking hits if you already have transfers out planned when injury strikes elsewhere?

Injuries, price changes, form makes most long play short term. But does not mean you do not plan for the long term in case it works out.

Like the stock market. Invest in a company with good fundamentals for the long term but if the market crashes, a short term play to sell short may be required.

Always plan long term knowing that it rarely goes to plan.

I like that analogy. Saying always plan long term, does that mean you always look at 6-10+ weeks when evaluating a transfer.

I go 6 weeks. Brain too slow to handle permutation to the factor of 10.

But I take season plays into consideration, i.e. always have a CHE defender as they will keep a lot of CS. Always have a MCI attacker etc.

When I look at a transfer I look at the gaps in my team in comparison to upcoming matches with a view to plastering over them so I hopefully have a decent week each week. Because you have 5 defs to choose from and only play 3 this is the area which has the least transfers as you can usually field a decent defence.

Your no 5 midfielder should be there for the long haul as long as they play. The rest are all expendable.

This is spot on and exactly why the transfer action and hits happen in the mid/fwds more often than not, bar injuries, etc.

The fact most of us play 3 out of five at the back means we can 'get by' by benching and rotating rather than transferring and just underlines why most seasoned FFS uses will always endeavour to have 15 starters, to ensure this flexibility.

        Good thread...

Cheers all, some great stuff here, I think I'm going to be more flexible with my front line and set and forget the defence more often this year. Last year I spent about an even amount of FTs on GKs and defence as I did in attacking positions.

I look at transfers usually on a 4-5 GW basis for attackers (even the premium options) and usually about 8 GWs for defenders.

In a way, I agree with Ryan's statement in principle - there's no way in hell a player will stay in your team for 38 GWs - Clyne being the exception for me last season.

If we were to set up teams for the long term literally, we'd essentially have a dead team. I 'long run' is viewed in a different perspective when it comes to FPL - for me, 4-5 GWs for an attacker is ideal, 6-7 GWs is long term. For a defender, 8 GWs is already abit long in the tooth but necessary for my strategy as I prefer to focus FTs on the front 8.

With regards to WCs, I tend to save them for tactical reasons...whether fixture change, DGW, closure of transfer window. Which points me towards GW8, 11 or 14 at the moment.

On the topic of hits, I think there's one point that people around here miss a lot: hits aren't just an extra transfer for the GW, they're an extra transfer OVERALL. From that perspective, it makes it a lot easier to make your points back with a hit. And it doesn't have to happen over a single gameweek.

Its somewhat of a reality statement rather than a rule. What we plan and what actually happens are two different things. Last season I never predicted I'd keep Ivanovic for all 38GW's, it was completely unplanned and the only reason I kept him was because he kept performing or I had other issues. Had he blanked in the first 3GW's I would have sold for sure, its performance based. We can't predict performance and we can't assume any of our players will be for the long term. Only hindsight will tell us that.

And to add to that, sometimes other players appear must have's and we sacrifice players we perhaps don't need to sell to get the guy in form. Its opportunistic, its dynamic, its not set in stone.

Yeah, this is something I'm not good at - I tend to be very reluctant to shift out perfectly good players with good fixtures.

For instance, right now I have Aguero, Wilson, Diouf. I want Costa but I don't want to lose any of those three.

Mind you, that weakness in my approach is also a strength. I tend to give good players time and to avoid hits.

Have the same frontline. Want to replace Diouf/Wilson with Benteke for his tasy 3 home fixtures in the next 4, but can't seem to do it for the same reasons.

My plan is to set and forget defenders and gks between WCs. Doesn't always work out but that's the plan. This is long term thinking. So far no transfers back there.

I then aim for a stable core, players who I am very unlikely to shift unless injured. Again doesn't always work out but that's the goal. This is also long term thinking.

Once I've got a solid pts driving core then I worry about punting on some of the fringe attacking positions. Here I'm more short term following form and fixture trends. Most of my transfers would cover 3-4 attacking spots in my team which means quite quick turnaround.

I do the same, but this varies to some degree depending on position / price:

4.5mil defenders - I want these in for the long term; don't want to be wasting transfers on them, so look for three who can rotate and are definite starters.

4.5 keepers - as above, I don't intend to change other than wildcarding.

5th midfielder - usually a cheap, low ownership players (so they won't drop in price) so I look at their fixtures for a lengthy period; 10+ gameweeks. However, this season, I am starting top weigh up the 3-5-2 formation.

That leaves the rest of the team. So yes, the average may be 10 weeks in the side, but for attacking midfielders and forwards I think you can usually afford to look 4-8 weeks ahead.

With no player do I ever look less than 3 games ahead, unless a double gameweek is included.

Until the next injury or form/fixture slump. Then its time to ditch. Many people are points hit averse (or points hit happy it seems). It doesn't matter though, what actually matters is having the players that will score you points.

Yes you should seek to minimise points hits, but its far more important to have the right players. No point saving 4 points if you have completely the wrong set of players.

To convince you.. At Liverpool, sterling got loads of chances as main striker and missed a lot. Now he is nowhere near main striker so isn't even getting as many chances.

His finishing would need to improve ridiculously.

Sterling will likely get assists (as he's not taking many shots and his finishing is gash)... and Yaya, Silva, Kolarov (and to a lesser extent Aguero and Kompany) will hog the bonus.

It's never a good time for captaincy differentials. It's a double or nothing at lower odds and chances are you fall further behind.

Always be conservative on captaincy but aggressive in getting in player differentials.

So Kolarov is as candidates nowadays? A jammy goal conceded and no attacking return would be nightmarish. Both mentioned in the differential pick article, anyway.

Try my(And others) Three 5.5 strategy instead.. plenty available and all good value. Lets you save a transfer most weeks even when you have an injury. you just go to not mind bench points too much. I have Shelvey/Wilson/Mahrez as my 3.

      If he fails, most fail.

If he fails and your differential captain scores well, most fail and you get a major boost in rank.

Yes, thats what I meant. I prefer the safe captaincy logic, but going differential(C) is high risk high reward.

Yes, right here. Contrary to popular belief, Watford have a pretty good defence for a promoted team. I'm wondering if I should captain Mahrez or Wilson instead.

      1. Shifty
        • 12 Years

They do have good stats, but they've yet to play a side that takes as many shots on target and at the accuracy levels of City at the moment.

Like I said below, form + fixture + stats favour City. That's all we can go on. Pretty sure there will be alot of captain hindsights if they mess up though.

Come deadline, it all boils down to how you like to play the game - go with the percentages, go with gut, or just go plain maverick.

If you wouldn't captain Aguero at home to Watford, then when would you?
You could really make a case for & against with every fixture.

Watford may be solid defensively...but will that hold up away to a City team that is flying?

      1. TK74
        • 10 Years

Chelsea at half strength still better defensively than Watford. City dropped 3

If it goes horribly wrong, I'll just give it a shrug and go "well, feck"

We can only base our decision off pre-game form and stats, and it all points in City and Aguero's favour. If Watford show up, or City lose focus on the day itself, it's all down to luck i'm afraid.
