Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I Tweeted this just this morning (over 4 Tweets of course)

Is there anyone enjoying their location and football more than Gareth Bale right now? Whenever I see his pictures or interviews he comes across as absolutely loving playing for Madrid and in Spain.

Can't really blame him. Playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world. Filthy rich. Young and living in a hot climate. Anyone who thinks he's moving club, let alone to Man Utd is a bit deluded.

Actually he doesn't seem to be that happy. Fans don't love him and the team feels he's too much of an introvert, he doesn't tally enough or something.

I agree with you to a certain extent, but the market is not motivated by how much the player likes a town or whatnot. These guys hand their economic life (transfers, wages etc) and sometimes more to their agents, who inflate the market and promote transfers all over the place. If his agent tells him he's off to Manchester, he'll be off with a smile on his face.

So was Andy Cole before he signed for Newcastle and then on to Utd.

Austin is a natural born goalscorer. What he has can't be coached, you either have it or you don't.

I doubt Utd would buy him but its hard to say how he'd fare in the Champions League but unless he gets he chance we'll never know for sure.

Goalscoring can be an is coached.

Austin's conversion rates are, against the common belief, rather mediocre.

Depends who your 5th midfielder is because if oZil doesn't play next week then you will be forced to use your 5th mid.

So if your 5th mid is useless then I would do OZil to ayew.

If your 5th mid is decent, then I would do pelle to Gomis.

Thinking of doing Diouf to Vardy and using AOA with LEI at home to AVL:
    Payet, A.Ayew, Alexis, Mahrez, YYT
    Aguero, Gomis, Vardy(c)

    1.3m ITB after FT

    Worth a go?

    • 12 Years

Interesting quirk of the English having a bank holiday... It means all the transfer windows close at different times, because obviously the nation stops tomorrow.

    Window closing times:
    England - 18:00 on 1 September
    Scotland - 23:59 on 1 September

    Germany - 18:00 on 31 August
    Italy - 23:00 on 31 August
    France - 23:59 on 31 August
    Spain - 23:59 on 31 August

So de Gea to Madrid must be done tomorrow. Equally, if Madrid are selling Benzema/Bale to England, you'd expect to see them buying a replacement tomorrow.

It's not unreasonable to say that Man U can win the league with the squad they have right now but they won't with LvG in charge, somebody else could with that squad.
Give LvG Bale and I'm not convinced they'd be any closer to winning, bale effect negated by the LvG effect ( phillofoshee)

poor? they dismantled spain sticking 5 past them and reached the semis with a squad many wouldnt of fancied to get out of their group..

compare barca non lvg what does that even mean?

winning the dutch title with AZ a very unfancied team in holland no mean feat either..

his reputation goes hand in hand with his achievements im afraid

                Ok but I disagree.

I thought the Dutch were drudgery, yeah you have a point with the Spain game.

His record was far from convincing at Barcelona both times & with the Dutch team both times.

But hayho, just my opinion, reckon he's a bit of an imposter, a good manager but not a great one by any stretch of the imagination.
Not worth falling out about. 🙂

n.b. Plus I've had a lot of wine & got Tadic off my bench so... pfffttt. 🙂

he won 2 consecutive league titles at barca first time around..

not to mention the ajax team he put together one of the greatest club sides of recent times that reached 2 consecutive champions league finals

everyone intitled to an opinion mate but i feel yours is one which is just jump on the guys back and everything united after a loss

what alot of people forget is he took that job having never managed in england before taking over a team that had just finished 7th.. a squad overloaded with dead wood and had lost its captain and vice captain.. there was plenty of money to rebuild clear the deadwood and get the team back in the champions league.. he did that.. his record against the top 4 last season worth a look at too..

iv got reservations over some decisions as im sure alot of people do with lots of other managers and the style of play isnt to my taste at all times but he knows what he's doing he's no mug.. hes improved that squad drastically but still work to be done he's only been there just over a year remember

I bend no favour towards any English/Welsh club. My initial post made reference to '25 years ago' which I was alluding to the great Ajax team but what I've said since I think is fair but only my opinion.
My memories of him over the cheers are of a malcontentent who blames everyone but himself.
His phillofoshee is bull, it is used as a defence in an arrogant 'you wouldn't understand' way. His phillofoshee has changed many times imo.

That's fair, I just don't think he's a hack. He has won a lot of domestic titles with teams, and surely that's why United wanted him? I mean, their league performance is what needed fixing first.

I'm not a big fan of his btw, just a bit on middle ground I suppose.

I guess my view has always been they bring him in for a couple/three seasons to restructure and rebuild, then go after a different manager.

Everybody beat Spain in World Cup, and Netherlands got a really easy way to semis.

Gnu is very much right about LVG's achievements, or lack thereof, at Barça and Bayern.

He had a great start at Ajax, for sure, although it is not to be doubted that the team was incredibly talented and mostly home grown and thus had a style of play internalised that did not come from LVG. And he did well with AZ, that much is right, but then again in the Eredivisie a medium weight club wins the league every once a while.

All in all, his achievements after the initial Ajax tenure are far from what his reputation suggests, and personally I lost all faith in his skills when I read his "philosofee" presentation for Barcelona. My goodness, what an utter load of rubbish that was!

Thought a big component of his popularity was him coming in and restructuring clubs? Then they replace him after a couple of years. That was my initial take on it.

Did he actually re-structure Barcelona and Bayern in a way that they actually built on his work? I think the most he did at both these teams was that he annoyed the hell out of the players who then were happy when he was replaced by another coach who, you know, liked football.

Mmm. I'm not sure. He promoted a lot of youth players I thought, and yes he fell out with a number of players, but many defend him and praise him. Not as clear cut as everyone hating him and playing better once he left I think.

not everybody beat spain 5-1.. that was a masterclass of a performance they never recovered from

2 titles in 4 seasons at barca.. there was another team in that league real madrid that were quite useful around that time not to mention valencia... spanish cup and super cup aswell.. if that is seen as a lack of achievements then im not sure what your own expectations would be ...

so because the dutch had a style of play internalised then van gaal deserves no credit for putting the team together and reaching 2 consecutive champions league finals with a team of which the average age was about 23.. ok

outside of the big 3 in holland PSV Ajax Feyenoord there have 2 other winners since 1963.. one of those was AZ and LVG.. so every once in a while doesnt really account for 50 years...

i get that you dont like the guy many dont and thats fair enough just say that dont knock the guys achievements.. they cant be knocked

I do notice that his type of central striker is one that doesn't come back to gain possession or influence the game by helping his mids. LVG wants his striker to only touch the ball in the box and that touch is typically a shot on target. Rooney isn't that type of player right now. So its going to make United/LVG look bad but to say LVG is the sole reason for their poor attack is a bit naive. Rooney needs more freedom and another attacker near him that isn't selfish like Mata can be at times. I do not believe any manager could come in and drastically improve this team. I really like what LVG has done, especially in comparison to when Moyes was the manager. Personally, I think United need a player like Muller that is more dominant and physical unlike Mata.

I never mentioned poor attack/ Rooney/ or anything he's doing at the moment specifically.
His lack of flexibility is perhaps his biggest flaw along with his stubborn arrogance.
i.e. Uniteds best form last year resulted from injuries forcing him to play players he had clearly disregarded - Mata, Fellaini, Young, Herrera and possibly more.

I don't think that's a league winning squad. Lacks a 20+ goal striker for starters. And yes I know Rooney has been in the past, but that isn't now, and frankly it was Fergie who ruined him by utilising him elsewhere (just my opinion). He could maybe come back, but i think its unlikely sadly. (would be happy to be wrong mind).

Not convinced it's a league winning squad at the moment tbh Gnu. Mata needs to be CAM but they need to sign a RW. Depay at LW isn't a title winner for me yet either. Need a striker as well as Rooney.

CM is good, strong and wouldn't change it. Need another CB. Full backs grand, GK fine if De Gea stays.

For a start i assume you have Gomis because he's a must have, and wouldn't double up on swansea attack. Pedro plays for a better team in an advanced position compared to hazard, and will get more points long term than ayew.
