With the international break now upon us, we assess the previous round of fixtures for signs of lessons learned this lunchtime. West Ham’s unpredictability, Garry Monk and Manuel Pellegrini’s tactical tweaks, Palace’s new wide man and Sunderland’s consistent Dutchman are all amongst today’s topics..

Expect the unexpected with West Ham…
After shipping six goals at home to Leicester and Bournemouth, the Hammers rolled up to Anfield as overwhelming underdogs on Saturday afternoon. Instead, the 3-0 win, allied with a victory and shut-out at the Emirates in Gameweek 1, highlights just how unpredictable Slaven Bilic’s men are at both ends of the pitch. Worryingly for Dimitri Payet owners, that erratic output also applies to the Frenchman – for all his undoubted talents, he’s now failed to play a part in any of his side’s six goals over the last two Gameweeks. Owners will be hoping he can take advantage of four decent fixtures (NEW, NOR, sun, cpl) in the next six before reassessing.

Canny Monk is keeping Swansea fixture-proof…
With an opening day point at Stamford Bridge and comeback win over United already under their belt, Swansea have more than proven their credentials. Devoid of the injured Jefferson Montero, Garry Monk started with his default 4-2-3-1 before a switch to a midfield diamond swung the match in Swansea’s favour after going a goal behind. Andre Ayew and Bafetimbi Gomis were once again the stars of the show as both breached a backline that rolled up to the Liberty on the back of three clean sheets. Rated third in our Season Ticker for attacking potential over the next six, many will be tempted to double-up on the duo as Monk looks to build momentum.

We cannot overlook Sterling …
The weekend arrival of Kevin de Bruyne, allied with the fine form of David Silva and Yaya Toure, has kept the former Liverpool man out of the headlines. Manuel Pellegrini’s half-time tactical tweak against Watford may force a re-think, though. With the match goalless, the City boss shifted from 4-2-3-1 to 4-4-2 at the break and handed Sterling a role up front alongside Sergio Aguero – the youngster needed less than two minutes to find the net and vindicate his manager’s decision. Whilst a lone striker system remains City’s default tactic, Sterling’s versatility clearly offers the league leaders an extra element should Pellegrini need to alter formation when dealing with obstinate opponents.

Sako looks the real deal…
Having fired his side to victory at home to Villa, the Palace wide man maintained his superb start to life at Selhurst Park with a match-winning display away to Chelsea. Sako’s goal and assist saw him leap onto our radars at a price of just 5.5 – after just two appearances, he’s produced more shots on target (eight) than any midfielder in the top-flight and with Alan Pardew’s side primed to go on the offensive, the summer signing from Wolves has emerged as a major candidate in the budget bracket.

Lens remains under the radar…
Sunderland may have yet to register a win or clean sheet but the Dutchman’s arrival has clearly made a significant difference to their prospects up top. Lens has now played a part in four of the Black Cats’ six league goals after finding the net in the 2-2 draw at Villa Park and, impressively, has produced attacking returns in each of the first four Gameweeks. He’s now accrued 20 points – that’s the same as the much-hyped Dimitri Payet, for example – yet with less than 1% of Fantasy managers currently on board, is looking a solid differential option in the centre of the park.

Vardy form could warrant a Leicester double…
With Riyad Mahrez now sitting in over 37% of FPL teams, most Fantasy managers are prepared to overlook the rest of Leicester’s main assets. Claudio Ranieri’s men look full of goals, though, and Jamie Vardy’s strike at Bournemouth means he’s now served up points in three of the first four Gameweeks. Sitting in just 5% of FPL teams, the 6.0-priced Vardy has already bagged 20 points and with Villa, Stoke and Norwich in the next four, could prove a canny move for those prepared to heavily invest in the in-form Foxes.

The Saints are starting to settle…
After a patchy opening few fixtures, Ronald Koeman’s side chalked up their first win of the season in convincing fashion. The Saints have now produced back-to-back shut-outs and with Dusan Tadic, Sadio Mane and Graziano Pelle all delivering the points against Norwich yesterday, there are hopes than the St Mary’s outfit can hit the heights of the season gone by. Certainly, last week’s Europa League exit should keep rest and rotation at a minimum and with Ryan Bertrand expected back soon, Koeman’s main men could soon be back in Fantasy favour.

Sinclair deserves more pitch time…
After dropping to the bench in Gameweek 3, the Villa winger has responded superbly, racking up five goals in two appearances across all competitions. Sinclair followed a midweek hat-trick against Notts County with a brace at home to Sunderland, serving Tim Sherwood a reminder of his goal-getting ability. Granted, Sinclair only started after Jack Grealish, Adama Traore and Gabby Agbonlahor were all ruled out against the Black Cats but bearing in mind his side have only scored four league goals, Sherwood could well keep faith. At a price of 4.9 and with spot-kicks in his locker, Fantasy managers will be hoping that’s the case.

Liverpool’s defence is still a work in progress…
With three clean sheets in as many matches, investment in the Liverpool backline was substantial ahead of the visit of West Ham – the first of three home matches in four for the Merseysiders. The 3-0 capitulation will surely persuade many to think twice now, whilst Brendan Rodgers’ decision to switch to a three-man backline after the break suggests more tinkering could be on the cards as the Reds boss looks to get his side back on track.

.. but the Baggies backline is starting to click…
A 1-0 win away to rivals Stoke brought West Brom a second clean sheet in three attempts as Tony Pulis’ side served a timely reminder of their resilience ahead of a very kind run of fixtures. Given that they served up 16 shut-outs in 2014/15, it’s a real surprise that Joleon Lescott – with just 4% ownership – is the most popular defensive option at the Hawthorns so far. Lescott looks increasingly likely to exit before tomorrow’s deadline but with the likes of Jonny Evans (4.9) now on board, the midlands outfit look poised to take advantage of a run which pits them against Villa, Everton, Palace, Sunderland, Norwich and Leicester in the next seven.

Ordinarily hate hits, especially for defenders, but feel that one might be in order this week:

    A) Targett -> 4.5 (Francis?)
    B) Tekkers -> Gomis (no Swans attack)
    C) Tekkers and Targett -> Gomis and Shaw (-4)

    Any thoughts??

Im wanting to be rid of Benteke too...considering Lukaku. Rondon and maybe Gomis(although I have Ayew and Williams already)

Thing is, all the money they're making on sponsorship deals is making it harded for them to get quality players at sensible prices. So they end up paying way over the odd and dishing out contracts that are nonsense.

What they currently lack is a set up the best players want to join (a la Barce, Real, Bayern, Crystal Palace etc)

      Agreed.

LvG reminds me of Bobby Robson's last spell at Newcastle. A big name but liable to forget players' names and just a bit out of touch. We can already see that he doesn't have what it takes to topple Jose or City.

I would move him upstairs at the end of the season and get rid of Ed too.

I would get rid of both and get some serious professionals back in.

I really respected Gill & SAF for the way they ran the club.

For Woodward, he reckon's it's just about money. Period. He has got zero understanding of any other aspect to the game or running a simple club.

He's a jumped up money man.

If Citeh midfield starts turning into the Arsenal midfield where the ponts come from everywhere then its time to jump ship. Silva V KDB is bad for anyone who own the one and not the other.

about 1m too expensive for me. At 9m I'd probably take him over Silva. Any more expensive, which he is and it seems a no brainer to pick up Silva.

On the other hand 7.8m in Sky is looking great value (for reference Silva is 8.9 in Sky)

                  A. Sanchez and Barkley --> Pedro and Ayew

                  or

10 mil for KDB is absolutely ridiculous. With all the offensive prospects City has, anybody who gets him before he has at least 2 good games is delusional.

I'm tempted to gamble, but only because he will be very lowly owned and I need to make up points.

I agree that he is overpriced. Silva was 10m after three seasons of returns. Ridiculous.

Exactly. How he can be priced higher than Pedro, a proven winner playing for the champions, is baffling. It can only be a decision based on city's early form.

Well, 1M less and everybody would have had him. He's very nailed on at City attack, probably in the set pieces too.

Sterling and De Bruyne are wrong type of players to solve City's problems, in fact may steepen them.

Sitting at the bottom of my money league, with an overall rank of 2.5M. Should I wildcard?

                  BUTLAND, Ruddy

                  Pedro, Yaya, Mahrez, ÖZIL, WESTWOOD
                  BENTEKE, Aguero, Wilson

                  ==>

                  MYHILL, Butland
                  SHAW, Francis, Kolarov, WARD, TARGETT
                  Pedro, Yaya, Mahrez, SANCHEZ, SAKO
                  GOMIS, Aguero, Wilson

Was planning on saving my wildcard, as I feelt I had a pretty good team. But my rank is dropping like a rock.

I don't begrudge Romero. It's only his 4th game in the prem. You might be being a bit too harsh n him. He could've done better on the 2nd but tbh United lost that game because United's players didn't react to the change in formation. You'd think players like Schweiny and blind would have the experience to understand how to counter the diamond formation that swansea played.

De Gea was much better than Romero. Romero is very average.

class will out in the end of course I expect the cream to rise by the end of the season. This trend of so few home wins can't continue

Just shocked me, I've got to 500k without the use of, so expected those that had to be much higher

No, Borussia has sold Blaszczykowski to Fiorentina and they don't have many players in his role. Aubameyang on the left, Mkhitaryan at n.10 and Januzaj on the right.

Nah, second rate players: Kagawa already proved to be second choice to Januzaj at ManU and it tells enough about Reus that ManU hasn't yet signed him.

I expected 10. But the reason I expected was purely because City were buying him, and if I'm honest, because of how much he cost.

I just wonder if it represents the best value as it were. He's in a better team, yes, but he's now in a team where points can be nabbed by the likes of Silva, Sterling and Kun as well.

Against weak teams sitting back in defence, there will be enough goals to assist for everybody in the attack 5 of Silva, Sterling, KDB, Kun, Touré. On the other hand, against any decent team there will be much more than enough job for the rest of the City players when none of the aforementioned 5 chips in in defence. 😉

Ah but then Touré remains the standout pick at his pricepoint (excluding Kun, as he'll thrive with supply from all the mids). 😉 Now, the lack of defending has my concerned about Kolarov 😉

The team sets the general price range where he will end up. If De Bruyne signed for Norwich, he would not be priced anywhere above 6.5.

It interests me. The team component is a factor, but I don't think they take stuff like not being the star player any more or any of that into account, which can impact on returns. As I say, I expected 10, not surprised and will happily buy him if he shows me his points won't be spread among other mids.

Maybe. Which is why sometimes top players of weaker teams, say potentially Payet, or Sigurdsson last season, can turn out excellent assets in FPL.

Which is fair, I think that must be taken into account. But lets say those extra 3 goals added 0.5/1 to his price over Payet. That's 8/8.5. Now, does that mean just because he signs for City he gets a 1/1.5 million boost?

I probably would have guessed around 10 million tbh. I'm merely wondering if FPL is putting too much emphasis on the team they are joining instead of their talent (not to mention the fact that he had 1 season in the Bundesliga. It was excellent, but we've yet to really have a fair idea of him on the club front.)

He easily gets and should get that 1-1.5 boost in price for signing at City. Simples: City gets so much more shots (and eventually goals) than West Ham that equivalent playmakers are going to get a lot more assists at City than at Hammers.

Fair enough. Flip side, City have far more talented players across the pitch and may not be as reliant on him as a smaller team would be on the likes of Payet. Therefore, the contribution to goals and assists can be spread across 4, 5, even 6 players at City.

Actually, remember that creating scoring chances and scoring goals is significantly easier in the Bundesliga than in Ligue 1.

Now he does play for a far superior team. I've always wondered about the talent vs team debate though.

Like the boy ,but from an fpl perspective , hardly tempting at 10. Sterling likely to outscore him in the short term , why the fuss ?

its hard to say if thats decent value or not tbh. He was taking f/k's which he will likely not be on at City, Can you compare him with David Silva before he has kicked a ball?

At least it is not not likely. He's very probably their best taker anyway.

Ok , yes. fair enough. Still though 9.5 would have been correct price , given they will not deny Silva his role

I agree on this, I'm not casting off his price. Perhaps Raheem's 9.0 valuation altered my perceptions a tad, but it isn't that ridiculous a price for KDB.

Martial is a ridiculous one as well I've barely heard of the guy, someone to play CB instead of Blind, anyone to play up front instead of rooney, and the GK situation should've been an immediate priority

3 obvious holes but no action taken.

Start of the season United were apparently title challengers and Rooney was going to score 30 league goals also, nonsense.

I have 1 ft and 0.5 in the bank with this team

                  Pants I Hennessey

                  Cedric I Kolarov I Gomez I Huth I Mings

                  Mane I Sanchez I Shaqiri I Sterling I Fletcher

                  Benteke I Aguero I Wilson

what do people think the priority is or should I save my FT? Guess mings could do with replacing and perhaps pants
