After failing in their attempt to sign Fabio Borini from Liverpool last summer, Sunderland finally got their man at the second time of asking. The Italy international joins the Black Cats in a deal worth up to £10 million and returns to Wearside on a four-year contract, having spent the 2013/14 season on loan at the Stadium of Light.

Discussing the move with the club’s official website, the forward admitted he rejected numerous offers in order to return to the North East:

“It is very nice to be back here because it is a place I called home… It is the perfect time [to come back]. In the past people have been reading a lot but it was a situation out my control and obviously I wasn’t in a position to make any decision. But here I am and as you probably read there were other clubs interested in me but I’m here at Sunderland because I wanted to be here.”

THE HISTORY

Borini began his football journey when he joined Bologna aged just 10 years old, and spent six years with the Italian side before moving to Chelsea in 2007. During the 2008/09 season, he was the first choice forward for the reserves, and made his senior debut as a substitute against Tottenham in September 2009.

The striker would find his opportunities at Stamford Bridge severely limited, though, so the striker joined then-Championship outfit Swansea on loan in March 2011. Borini scored six goals in nine league appearances as the Welsh side secured promotion to the Premier League.

The Italian had already decided his future lay elsewhere, however, and initially joined Parma on a five-year deal, although just months later, Borini would join fellow Italian side Roma on loan. He enjoyed a successful campaign with i Giallorossi, scoring nine goals in 24 league appearances, which led to Liverpool swooping to sign the striker in the summer of 2012 for a fee of around £10.5 million.

An injury-hit first season at Anfield limited Borini to just 13 league appearances, scoring only once, so the forward was sent out on loan to Sunderland for the 2013/14 campaign, where he netted seven times in 32 league outings, and also scored in the 3-1 Capital One Cup final defeat to Manchester City. He returned to Merseyside last season, but found first-team opportunities limited once again, managing just three league starts for the Reds.

Borini featured for Italy throughout the age-groups, and played 18 times for the Under 21s, scoring six goals. His only senior appearance came against the United States in February 2012, while he was included in the squad for Euro 2012.

THE PROSPECTS

Having enjoyed a fairly successful loan spell with Sunderland during the 2013/14 campaign, and with limited competition for the forward positions at the Stadium of Light, Borini should find first-team opportunities easier to come by this season.

Black Cats boss Dick Advocaat has returned to his default 4-3-3 formation in the last couple of fixtures and, with the Dutchman having reservations over Jermain Defoe’s ability to lead the line as a lone striker, has shifted the former Spurs star onto the left flank, with Jeremain Lens fielded on the opposite wing. Given their recent form, both Defoe (two goals) and Lens (one goal, three assists) look poised to continue out wide.

Advocaat has subsequently started Danny Graham in the central role but is expected to install Borini through the middle at the former Swansea man’s expense, with Steven Fletcher likely to retain bench-warming duties. The Black Cats boss could even continue with the 4-2-3-1 set-up employed in the second-half of the Gameweek 4 draw with Villa, which saw new boy Ola Toivonen stationed in the central support role behind a lone forward.

With a price tag of 5.4 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Borini could well prove a viable budget option for our three-man frontlines – all the more so if he can replicate the goal threat which saw him fire an effort every 33.7 minutes during his previous stint on Wearside in 2013/14.

Currently owned by just 0.1% of FPL managers, he could prove a real differential for Fantasy managers, though it’s fair to say that few will be willing to initially jump on board, with Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson (5.7) currently the preferred cut-price forward of choice on the back of four goals in the last two Gameweeks.

The upcoming schedule for Advocaat’s side (TOT, bou, mun, WHM, wba, NEW) is pretty favourable barring the Gameweek 7 trip to Old Trafford, though despite scoring six times, it’s worth noting that Sunderland rank second last, only above Newcastle, for total goal attempts with 34. With the consistent Lens producing a goal or assist in all four of his outings so far, though, Fantasy managers keen to invest in the Black Cats may turn to the Dutch midfielder instead until Borini can prove a worthy target up top.

Bacary Sagna was forced off midway through France's friendly win over Serbia to leave Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini with a potential right-back dilemma.

Sagna has enjoyed a superb start to his second City season but had an ice-pack applied to his ankle after he suffered a knock in the first-half of Les Bleus' 2-1 victory in Bordeaux.

        you're not sure?

it's not... the loan system in this country (can't speak for italy) needs sorting out so badly

for absolute starters it's absurd that you can loan players to clubs in the same division as you

new rules will need to get introduced
up in Scotland it is becoming the main transfer system, its wrong that a team should gain over others just because they have friends at a big club. managers will end up getting the job based on who they know. Then we may as well just call it the house of lords premier league

I'd certainly get leicester cover in given their fixtures and attacking style of play

I'd be wary of getting shot of depay this week as well though - I'd give him one more week. It's the biggest match of the season for most united fans playing Pool at home, even when they're not title rivals. If united can't rouse themselves from their slump for this I'd avoid their entire team like the plague heading into those fixtures

but last season, and indeed in seasons gone by, this has often been the fixture to get united going again

plus LVG performs better in my book in supposedly harder games so I think united are kind of anti-fixture proof!

        • 13 Years

Interesting, I was set on selling Depay, but can also afford Mane > Sanchez.

Planning to get in Gomis for Sakho next week, too, so that covers Swans off. Hopefully Leicester will hit a slump to save me from having to worry!

I would avoid both transfers and hold - mane and depay could very easily do well this week and I think arsenal might struggle again. Arsenal haven't hit their stride yet. When they do, back their players to the hilt but when they're struggling they're the most frustrating team in the land.

What's the worst that can happen? I can't see Sanchez outscoring either of those players by more than say 10 points, and if he does you can still get him knowing he's now hit form and two transfers gives you more room to manourve

Do like Doosra midfield marauders table, Kouyate is great option, Redmond a is a more creative option, but Kouyate is a really threat.

Why that guy, from North Ireland, Lafferty... why doesn't he play in first XI in Norwich...? He scored so many goals in these qualification games... Did he played in Turkey last season...? I didn't know , until now, when I was starting my WC, that he even play in Premier league...?!?!

Lafferty is not PL quality. Done a good job for Rangers a few years back but hes lost it a bit. Certainly not an FPL option

I read the whole thing.. Have never been a huge Radiohead fan, have seen them live a couple of times and been pretty impressed though.. Probably wrongly have never given the full albums a good chance.. Your article makes for a good read though and certainly made me feel like giving Kid A a listen on the drive home this evening!

Good read that and I agree that it is a pretty majestic album. The Bends is my favourite album of theirs but I do prefer Kid A to OK Computer.

Thanks Hooky. Ordering Radiohead albums is like bloody Sophie's Choice; The Bends, Kid A and OK Computer have all, at one time or another, been my all time favourite album. If I absolutely had to, I think I'd go:

        Kid A
        OK Computer
        The Bends
Amnesiac (gets unfairly overlooked, some of their best work on that album)
        In Rainbows
        Hail to the Thief
        King of Limbs
        Pablo Honey

Radiohead's worst stuff is better than 90% of bands' best stuff.

Good read! Had a stage when I didn't listen to anything else but Radiohead. Haven't done it for while, because I got to the stage where I felt I had to be in the mood for them. Will be giving Kid A a listen for the rest of the afternoon, then In Rainbows.

In the unfortunate situation of having both McCarthy and Myhill. I have 1FT and 0.6 in the bank but ideally want to hold that over until next gameweek so that i can upgrade Watmore to Wilson.

Is it worth the risk to see if one of the keepers can keep their place?

I have the same. Surely one will play? Not sure either will be thrown straight in to be honest...

Next week I'm freeing up 0.4m from somewhere then getting Lindegaard in for McCarthy. Happy with a West Brom keeper all season long.

That's whats stopping me transferring McCarthy for Lindegaard. I'd prefer to not think about my keeper for the rest of the season.

It is a pain, but a West Brom keeper makes perfect sense to me as they keep away cleanies and rarely get tonked. Only 9.0m either which way too. Plus got two of their four worst games out of the way.

I will just have to do another trade when the time comes, but Foster returning could be into January for all we know...These long termers have a habit of picking up niggles.

Gomis or Ayew, because Watford are solid at the back, especially at home.

This is how I'm leaning. I just need to figure out which one. I'll probably retain Gomis because he's on pens, but Ayew has more bonus potential and can get the clean sheet point.

So it's probably been posted here but apparently Kolarov had a little niggle and was benched for the entire France v Serbia match as a result. However, I think the coach said he didn't risk him because he was aware City didn't have any left backs if Kolarov was out for a longer period, so it sounds like he should be fine 🙂
