Jefferson Montero is still a concern for Swansea’s trip to Watford. Fabio Borini is handed a centre forward role in a behind-closed-doors clash for Sunderland, whilst question marks remain over the availability of Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana for Liverpool’s trip to United.

Montero still a doubt

Reports in the local press suggest Jefferson Montero remains a doubt for Swansea’s trip to Watford this Saturday despite returning to training in midweek.

The Scout Says: Although Swansea triumphed 2-1 over Manchester United last Gameweek, both of their goals arrived when Montero’s stand-in, Wayne Routledge, was replaced by Ki Sung-yeung as Garry Monk moved to a midfield diamond. Over the opening three Gameweeks, the 6.0-priced Montero tormented opposing full-backs, racking up five more take-on attempts than any midfielder from his role on the left of a 4-2-3-1. In terms of his Fantasy potential, Montero ranked second among the Swans’ midfielders with regards to chances created (eight) but fourth for attempts (five). The fact that he amassed just one fewer penalty-box touch (14) than form man Andrew Ayew (15) during that period shows that he’s maneuvering himself into dangerous areas of the pitch, but prospective investors will be looking for a more concerted goal threat before they part with their cash. Should he miss out again, though, Ayew owners will be hoping that Monk utilises a midfield diamond from the off at Watford, with the switch in system seeing the Ghana international move up front alongside Bafetimbi Gomis.

Borini trialled in central role

Fabio Borini was deployed as the central striker in a 4-3-3 set-up during a behind-closed-doors friendly against Hartlepool last week.

The Scout Says: Considering that Dick Advocaat has admitted he doesn’t think Jermain Defoe can operate effectively as a lone frontman, and the likes of Danny Graham and Steven Fletcher have turned out uninspiring performances in the forward roles, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Borini was fast-tracked into the central-striker berth. The Italian’s propensity for intelligent runs beyond defences could dovetail well with the penetrative passing of Jeremain Lens – further enhancing the winger’s Fantasy appeal. With Lens nailed-on down the right, Defoe looks set to continue in the left flank berth, though the imminent return of Adam Johnson affords Advocaat another wide option in his three-man frontline.

Henderson and Lallana still doubts

Jordan Henderson is recovering well from a heel injury that’s kept him sidelined for the past two Gameweeks but will be touch-and-go for Liverpool’s trip to Old Trafford. Meanwhile, Brendan Rodgers is optimistic on Adam Lallana’s chances of recovering from a thigh knock before the weekend.

The Scout Says: With Philippe Coutinho suspended for Saturday’s clash, Brendan Rodgers will be desperate for Lallana and Henderson to recover in light of the previous Gameweek’s home thrashing at the hands of West Ham. Should the pair both miss out, Rodgers could turn to Danny Ings or Jordan Ibe if he maintains a 4-3-3 system, with the versatile Roberto Firmino perhaps shifting over to the left. Certainly, there’s no shortage of options for the Reds option, with a 4-2-3-1, with Firmino tucked behind Christian Benteke, also a viable alternative. Patient owners of the big Belgian, meanwhile, will be looking for signs of a return to form after he netted just once in the opening month. Sold by more than 142,000 FPL managers since the end of Gameweek 4, he still sits in over 36% of sides ahead of upcoming home clashes against Norwich and Villa.

Everton injury update

Bryan Oviedo is struggling to shake off a knee injury ahead of Everton’s home clash against Chelsea, but reserve left-back Brendan Galloway is expected to be passed fit. In the event that neither defender recuperates in time, Roberto Martinez revealed that new centre-back signing Ramiro Funes Mori will take up the mantle at left-back:

“With Bryan, it’s difficult. We all know how proud he is to represent Costa Rica and the moment he couldn’t make the squad, we knew it was something that we had to pay attention to and get to the bottom of. I don’t know if the weekend is too early or not – we’ll find out over the next 48 hours. I think Brendan is progressing well and should be available, in the same way that Ramiro Funes Mori could become available. He’s someone that has played in that position before. Being a left-footed defender, he has played in those positions. The way I see Ramiro, he is able to play in any of those positions when he is needed, so in that respect it is about assessing how he feels. It’s a long journey coming back on Thursday morning and we’ll assess that from a physical point of view.â€

The Spanish boss also spoke on his midfield contingent, offering positive news on the health of James McCarthy while suggesting that Aaron Lennon could feature against the Blues:

“The reports that we have had so far has been very positive. We are going to see how James McCarthy comes back because he had a little bit of a problem in his tendon in knee before he joined the international setup but he got through the games really well. So in that respect we are quite positive. I’m not worried about his [Aaron Lennon’s] physical state and he needs to play games now to sharpen up his play. He’s refreshed and is in a great position. He knows the football club inside out and is desperate to get back to Goodison. From that point of view, I expect Aaron to be involved one way or another at the weekend.â€

The Scout Says: With two shut-outs in the last three, the Toffees defence has been kind to their Fantasy owners. Given that Oviedo is listed as a midfielder in FPL, though, his appeal is virtually non-existent to Fantasy managers, with the likes of Phil Jagielka – at 5.4 – offering the cheapest, secure route into Martinez’ backline. That being said, if Funes Mori can muscle his way into the rearguard and secure a run of starts whilst Leighton Baines remains sidelined, the 5.5-priced defender – who’s a proficient free-kick taker and netted six goals in all competitions last term – would certainly emerge on our radar. Further up the park, in the wake of Tom Cleverley’s ankle injury, the door is open for Lennon to forge a route into the Toffees’ set-up. However, the bevy of other wide options (Kevin Mirallas, Gerard Deulofeu, Leon Osman and Steven Naismith) waiting in the wings for an opportunity render the former Spurs stalwart a considerable rotation risk. With Arouna Kone impressing on the right, Lennon may have to initially settle for a sub role as he looks to oust the Ivorian from Martinez’ starting XI.

Fernando on Cusp of City Comeback

Manchester City enforcer Fernando is nearing a return after undergoing treatment on a groin injury that caused constant discomfort last season:

“I’m feeling much better and in a couple of days I will be stepping up my training programme. I’ve had this problem for a long time. I originally picked up the injury a year ago and after every game I played, it felt sore and obviously much worse. I hoped I would return after the summer break and everything would be fine, but during pre-season the pain became gradually worse again. I went back to Porto for treatment, rest and to recover and now I’m feeling much better.â€

The Scout Says: Fernando faces a tough task to establish himself as a regular in the City midfield. Given that Fernandinho has already scored twice in the opening four in his role alongside Yaya Toure, Fernando looks unlikely to forge his way into consideration just yet. Manuel Pellegrini has utilised 4-2-3-1 and 4-4-2 formations so far in the league, though the City boss did trial a 4-3-3 during City’s pre-season matches and such a scenario could offer the Brazilian pitch time, particularly with Champions League football just around the corner. Given that the 6.0-priced Fernandinho is owned by only 2% of FPL managers, despite racking up 23 points so far, though, it’s fair to say that most are looking to City’s big hitters as a route into their potent attack.

      2. I am on annual leave until dd/mm/yyyy. I will allow each sender one email and if you send me multiple emails, I will randomly delete your emails until there is only one remaining. Choose wisely. Please note that you already sent me one email.

      3. I will be out of the office for the rest of the day without access to email. If this is an emergency, please call emergency services.

      4. I am currently out at a job interview and will reply to you if I fail to get the position.

      5. You are receiving this automatic notification because I am out of the office. If I was in, chances are you wouldn't have received anything at all.

      6. The e-mail server is unable to verify your server connection and is unable to deliver this message. Please restart your computer and try sending again.

      7. I’m not in the office right now, but if it’s important; tweet me using #InterruptYourVacation.

      8. Thank you for your email. Your credit card has been charged AED 25 for the first ten words, and AED 10 for each additional word in your message.

      9. Thank you for your message, which has been added to a queuing system. You are currently in 352nd place, and can expect to receive a reply in approximately 13 weeks.

      10. I will be out of the office and returning next week. I have incredibly easy access to a phone and email, but I assure you, it will not be used for work purposes.

    Morning All,

After the Stanville post got me feeling very poetic and an argument me and the misses had last night I wrote this for her today.
Thought I would share it with you guys as well…

    The Beautiful Game

If you could get inside the mind of a football mad man,
It would be every woman’s dream, the masterplan,
To know what they’re thinking about the beautiful game,
and why it matters so much, it’s not going to bring them fame.

Their team scoring goals and winning is like shopping for shoes and perfume,
Or like that buzz you get from a newly decorated room,
Win, lose or draw you’ve got to remember your man will always love you,
And if you let him watch football at the weekends he’ll always love you too.

Or like that buzz you get from a newly decorated room,"

      *Sharp intake of breath*

Ahaha no I didn't, just the idea that what all women get a buzz from is shopping and decorating.

          1. I have a further joke around women "getting a buzz" from something else, but am guessing JMO wouldn't like it 😛

I thought it was about the wider female population, if that's what she likes then of course there's no problem with it!

My fiancee hates shopping, but the newly decorated room thing is a weird one; we've just moved flats and she does get really giddy about painting, it's really odd. I bought a stepladder on the way home from work yesterday and it was like I'd brought home a winning lottery ticket.

Probably best to make it clearer the poem is specifically to her the first stanza by writing it the way Doos suggested, also "madman" instead of "mad man" helps neutralise the gender there a bit.

I'd also suggest "My" in the second verse instead of "A man's" and "you" before shopping and perfume. Less gender stereotyping that way.

    Falling stars update...GW4

A good first week for the ne'er do wells and cast offs from of FPL despite Mitrovic's best attempts at sabotage and a captain flop by Hazard.... A GW score of 50pts against a GW avg of 37pts will do fine...

    http://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/chelseas-thibaut-courtois-facing-extended-period-on-the-sidelines-after-training-injury-a2944446.html

Set for further tests today to determine the extent of the injury, but seems almost certain he'll miss this weekend. If he's out for an extended period of time, who's the best replacement? Begovic or someone else? My other keeper is McCarthy so can't just stick with one

                      They aren't.

But my argument is actually that it would really be stupid to get the Chelski goalie, imo. Firstly, I would want three outfield players at some stages of the Season. Secondly, the Chelski goalie is not likely to get many points.

Oh. I 100% agree Chelsea keeper is a bad shout - usually wasting the keeper slot in top teams is a bad shout anyways.

We will agree to disagree on the "they aren't much better than Palace" though. That's mad, Chelsea will compete for the prem title, both cups & a good run in the CL.

Palace's season will be a success if they get top 8.

You could always replace him with Speroni, just for security. Although I expect McCarthy to keep his place.

Could do. I only really got McCarthy as he looked the cheapest keeper that would most likely start, and had intended to bench him most weeks. Prefer a proper, clean sheet keeping keeper now that Courtois is out. Looking at Fabianski now, just weighing up whether it's worth a hit or not.

Yes if he is out for a certain period then Begovic really looks like a tempting option because he is cheap and that way it allow us to get more variation in our defence line, but not sure about McCarthy as Sperioni will be back soon. Im currently on Ruddy/Krul

Well the E.S. haven't posted anything to make me change him out yet, so i don't think it's about trusting them. If you read the article, it also says they're awaiting further tests and a further update will be given tomorrow in the press conference. I was just speculating, and giving a probably scenario incase he is out for a while.

I did read it and you're right of course in this case it was all speculation no extra information so whether I trust the ES or not is technically very relevant.

I don't trust the ES though as a source either for making FPL decisions or reading informative sports news, they simply get stories wrong much more than other sources.

              Phew!

Okay that's fair enough. I've not really come across them getting much wrong, but then again, i'm not exactly using them for fpl decisions, as whatever information they have will've already been posted from somewhere else, either a local journo or the club website. I read the E.S. most days when commuting, but haven['t really come across fake or misleading stories injury/team news stories.

I wouldn't say it's fake necessarily, just wrong a lot of the time. The statistics I saw weren't specific to injuries or team news but were specific to Chelsea stories by them and other news outlets. The statistics gave the impression their inside sources either weren't very good, or that they don't have any and just copy news indiscriminately from other outlets, many of which seem to "make up" news. I wish I had said statistics to hand but never saved the link.

Anyway as you say their reliability is academic in this case as they don't claim to have a source, I'll be careful to say what I mean next time.

This is my latest draft of team having used the wildcard in this gameweek: 0.7 ITB

Butland, Fabianski (These 2 rotate very very well till the beginning of February, when I might use my next wildcard)
Saylor, Kolarov, Joe Gomez, Shaw, Evans
    Ayew, KDB, Sako, Pedro, Mahrez
    Wilson, Gomis, Aguero

Just swap KDB for Silva and you'll be satisfied.
I can't figure out why you're dissatisfied though.

    Butland
    Targett Kompany Shaw
    Alexis KDB Ayew Hazard
    Vardy Benteke Pelle

Schwarzer Clark Ward Wanyama. 0.0 in the bank

What do you guys think? (Play in a draft league so can't get every player)

I saw that before, and that he also said the price tag is ridiculous. I know he meant that prices generally in football are ridiculous, but it seems an unbelievably stupid thing to come out and say.

      Nothing to see here

        10 years, 4 months ago

It's obvious what he's trying to say, but what a stupid way to phrase it. He's saying 2 things; that Martial will have no impact in the next 2 years, and reminding everyone that he's leaving. He's basically telling a player that he's not going to do anything for a couple of years, that he hasn't bought him because he wants him there during his reign, and that he won't be his manager long-term. Hardly the kind of stuff that will inspire a kid to give him his all.

          • 16 Years
          10 years, 4 months ago

You could also interpret it as he's trying to relieve the huge amount of pressure there is on Martial in respect of the price tag. This might be beneficial for his performances.

I actually think he will play quite a bit for them this season.

          1. Doolittle
            • 13 Years
            10 years, 4 months ago

He shouldn't be leaving what he says open to interpretation like that though. If he'd said something like "He's a great talent but he is still young, and it will take time to develop and adjust to the league", no one would bat an eyelid, and the message is still the same. Why come out and say "I haven't signed him for me"?

            1. pompeyfan
              • 16 Years
              10 years, 4 months ago

He doesn't care what everyone else thinks, and fair enough. As long as he does right by his players that's all that matters. People shouldn't be so stupid as to hang on his every comment - he deliberately tries to get reactions from the press.

He also directly translates from Dutch to English (just as he did to Spanish & German) so some comments may look a little odd to the English.

                A little odd?

The man is howling at the moon. I personally think that it's a disgrace that he is in charge at a football club, let alone Manchester United.

Man Utd will hold possession until Pool fall over of boredom. Then Rooney will hold the ball in the box until Gomez kicks the ball into his own net out of frustration.
