Both Manchester clubs suffer losses despite taking the lead in their opening Champions League matches. Sergio Aguero makes an earlier-than-expected return from injury for City, though United are left reeling after Luke Shaw suffered a broken leg at PSV. Elsewhere, Jose Mourinho looks to make changes this evening, whilst Per Mertesacker is ruled out for Arsenal.

Aguero Return Not Enough for City

Manchester City fell to a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Juventus, having taken the lead after 57 minutes through a Giorgio Chiellini own goal. Samir Nasri started ahead of Jesus Navas on the right flank, while Wilfried Bony was handed the lone-striker berth. Sergio Aguero was surprisingly fit enough for an 11-minute cameo, with Kevin De Bruyne clocking 23 minutes as a second-half sub. Vincent Kompany had to be substituted 15 minutes from time with a calf injury. Manuel Pellegrini told reporters post-match that the Belgian centre-back will be assessed on Wednesday to ascertain the severity of his injury.

The City manager had this to say on the popular pair:

“Sergio is not 100% fit…It’s important for the team to see that if we need him, he can play…He was not for 90 minutes. It was a risk to use him but fortunately he had no problems…Vincent has a calf injury, we’ll see how it is but now we don’t know”.

The Scout Says: Aguero was never likely to start against Juventus but his brief appearance from the bench does at least offer some hope to his 31.8% ownership ahead of Man City’s home tie against West Ham. Having been initially ruled out of last night’s match, Aguero’s quick recovery bodes well for his chances of starting against West Ham on Saturday evening, with Pellegrini’s Friday afternoon press conference eagerly awaited. Kompany’s injury scare comes as a major concern to his hefty 37.2% ownership as well as those in possession of other Sky Blues defenders. The fact that Kompany (42) and Aleksandar Kolarov (46) rank second and third in the league-wide scoring charts serves to illustrate how well Man City’s defence have fared. Certainly, the Hammers will approach their upcoming match against the league leaders with renewed optimism if the talismanic skipper is ruled out, given that they’ve matched City for goals so far, with 11 apiece.

United Suffer Shaw Loss

Manchester United lost 2-1 to Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven, despite opening the scoring through an impressive goal from Memphis Depay. Louis van Gaal went with an attacking set-up, deploying a supporting trio of Depay (left), Juan Mata (number ten) and Ashley Young (right) behind lone frontman Anthony Martial. Bastian Schweinsteiger and Ander Herrera were the preferred pairing in the double pivot. The night, however, was defined by a shocking injury to Luke Shaw, who was scythed down as he rampaged through the heart of Eindhoven’s defence. Van Gaal later revealed that the former Saints defender suffered a double leg fracture, tentatively suggesting he’ll be sidelined for between four and six months:

“I’m not a doctor so I cannot say, but when you have a double fracture it is four to six months. But you can never say that in advance. He won’t play in the group stage, I don’t think. I hope he will play again this season.”

The Scout Says: Having netted a brace against Club Brugge last month, Depay now boasts three goals in as many European outings. His 18% ownership will hope he can replicate that form on the domestic scene, having witnessed the Dutchman draw blanks in his first five league starts for the Red Devils – despite placing third among his counterparts for attempts (17). With Shaw out of the picture, Marco Rojo could slot in at left-back or – as transpired against Eindhoven – Daley Blind might shift over to the left, with Rojo partnering Chris Smalling in central defence. Valued at 5.4, Rojo could offer a route into United’s defence for those managers that were deterred by Shaw’s price rise, although Phil Jones’ return from injury would again cast doubt on Rojo’s start should Blind move to full-back. How the reshuffle impacts their clean sheet prospects remains to be seen, yet few will be contemplating investment until Van Gaal’s troops have negotiated their next five fixtures (sou, SUN, ars, eve, MCI).

Mourinho to Ring the Changes

Ahead of Chelsea’s Champions League match-up against Maccabi Tel-Aviv on Wednesday, Jose Mourinho revealed that Oscar has shaken off his injury and will feature in the squad but is short of fitness. Elsewhere in the Blues camp, Baba Rahman makes the squad, while Radamel Falcao is ruled out with a tendon complaint:

“Is he [Oscar] fit as in not injured? Yes. Is he at top condition? No. Yes, he is selected though; he will be in the squad. Baba will be selected as well. Falcao has a little problem. He’s not in the squad. He had a problem in a tendon during training. It will just be for this game.â€

The Scout Says: Mourinho will be desperate to recall Oscar to the side at the number ten berth, given that Willian and Cesc Fabregas failed to deliver in that role over the past two Gameweeks. The Brazilian midfielder – who’s dropped to 8.3 on the Fantasy market – scored in the Blues’ season opener against Swansea and would certainly pique our interest if he’s afforded a run of starts beyond the Arsenal clash, with a strong quartet of fixtures (new, SOU, AVL, whu) on the horizon. In light of Chelsea’s struggles at the back (no side has conceded more than their 12 goals), Rahman has an opportunity to muscle his way into Mourinho’s thinking if he can impress in the cup fixtures. A strong performance from the Ghanaian left-back would have the underperforming Branislav Ivanovic nervously looking over his shoulder, given that Cesar Azpilicueta can operate from either full-back position.

Ogbonna Expected to Return Quickly

In the aftermath of West Ham’s 2-0 home victory over Newcastle United, Slaven Bilic calmed fears over the fitness of Angelo Ogbonna – who pulled his hamstring at the 41-minute mark – suggesting that he’ll only be sidelined for a short period of time:

“We still don’t know what is wrong with him. It was a long sprint, and it was dangerous and he pulled his hamstring. But I spoke to him and we don’t know yet. It doesn’t look like a big [injury] maybe just one week off.â€

The Scout Says: West Ham have been a mixed bag on the defensive front this term, conceding six goals against Leicester City and Bournemouth but claiming clean sheets in their other three fixtures. They’ve certainly tightened up over the past two Gameweeks, conceding just 10 shots inside the box and one big chance against Liverpool and Newcastle United. A trip to Manchester City this weekend will doubtless represent their biggest challenge of the season so far, given that the Sky Blues have conceded zero goals and one big chance in five outings. Nonetheless, they’ll draw some encouragement from the fact that a few key Man City players – namely Sergio Aguero and David Silva – might be slightly off the pace after returning from minor knocks. After missing Gameweek 4 through suspension, right-back Carl Jenkinson dropped to the bench on Monday but he now looks poised to return to the starting XI this weekend, with James Tomkins moving into the centre to cover in Ogbonna’s absence.

Mertesacker Ruled out for Gunners

Per Mertesacker will not travel to Croatia with the rest of the Arsenal squad ahead of their Champions League group match against Dinamo Zagreb tonight, having crashed his car in a minor incident outside the Gunners’ training ground. Jack Wilshere, meanwhile, is set to undergo surgery for a fracture in his left fibula, potentially ruling him out until Christmas.

The Scout Says: Considering Arsenal’s recent successes in defence, Mertesacker might be forced to play a bench role on his return to the matchday squad. The Gunners have recorded three clean sheets on the trot without the German international, conceding a solitary big chance over that period. Now that Gabriel has somewhat proved he function effectively alongside Laurent Koscielny, Arsene Wenger might be tempted to exercise more rotation in that second centre-back slot, irrespective of whether Mertesacker reclaims his starting berth immediately. Ultimately, Koscielny stands as the safest route into the North London club’s back line, with the full-backs more of a rotation risk now that the midweek cup fixtures are a factor. As for Wilshere, the fact that his absence has next-to-no relevance on the Fantasy scene says everything about his recent injury record.

Martinez Hopeful on Injured Duo

Roberto Martinez is optimistic that the injuries sustained by Muhamed Besic and Seamus Coleman are not as bad as they initially appeared. The pair are set to undergo scans this week to shed further light on their respective knocks:

“Forty-eight hours after the game, we’re quite positive in the way Mo and Seamus feel. I think Seamus felt a lot better than Mo [immediately after the game] but we’re going to get the scans done today so we have a clear idea. I don’t think it looks as bad as we feared once it happened but we’ll get more information as the week goes on and we’ll see how long a period we’re looking at for the two players. They were the only two to pick up knocks against Chelsea, so everyone else from that squad is fully fit for the weekend.”

The Scout Says: In the wake of Tom Cleverley’s long-term injury, Muhamed Besic was Roberto Martinez’s favoured replacement against Chelsea, with the Toffees moving to a 4-3-1-2 set-up last weekend. Steven Naismith’s hat-trick from the bench has now cut off the Bosnian’s route back into the side on an immediate basis, likely restricting him to cameo roles. Coleman has yet to garner strong interest from Fantasy regulars, given the unforgiving nature of the Toffees’ early-season schedule. Everton’s fixture list turns kinder beyond their next quintet of match-ups (swa, wba, LIV, MUN, ars), though, with a trip to West Ham arguably their toughest encounter leading into the New Year. Coleman could well factor into our thinking from Gameweek 11 onwards, then, having displayed a propensity for attacking returns (nine goals and six assists) in the previous two campaigns.

First time ever both Manchester clubs lose in CL on the same exact day.

Something like that. It's a bit silly stat therefore, I just read it on opta's homesite. They share a lot of quite silly stat bites.

I'm not sure if the Manchester clubs ever had CL football on the same day before, in fact. If not, this was a great start for that tradition! 😀

Tempted to look at Janmaat or Amavi for Shaw. If I play them this week I can afford to bench week after anyway as I'll need to get rid of Ogbonna. After GW7/8 Janmaat could be good to own.

Right now it doesn't look good as they're shipping 1-2 goals most games but longer term I might give that old play the fixtures a go.

We're a nightmare in FPL terms, because we'll turn up for a tough game like Saints away or Chelsea at home and turn them over, but then draw 2-2 with Watford at home. It's not just this season, we have a history recently of turning up for the big games (tearing apart Arsenal and Man Utd in the last couple of years), then being dreadful against weaker sides and leaking goals.

For sad reasons, I won't have enough time to submit a GW5 article review on 'what the bookes say'.

Just a very quick bullet point round-up which maybe could turn into a hot-topic?

    - Only 1 (Mahrez) of the top 10 players in the FFS Captain Poll delivered attacking points this week (not very encouraging).

    - The top 3 (Arsenal, West Ham, West Brom) of the most likely teams to keep a clean sheet, did just that (more encouraging).

    - Out of my own personal predictions, 7 out of the 10 games had the right result but with zero correct scorelines. West Ham (11/10) proved excellent value as predicted 🙂

    A few interesting stats from the games;

Liverpool have only won one of their last eight away games in the Premier League.

Sunderland have conceded 11 goals this season - only Chelsea have conceded more in the league.

Villa have conceded a total of 14 goals in their last five away league games

This is the first time that Jose Mourinho has lost two successive Premier League games since May 2006

Mesut Ozil has created 76 goalscoring chances in the Premier League in 2015, more than any other player

Only 16 of the 40 points accrued by Crystal Palace since Alan Pardew took charge have been won at Selhurst Park

Odion Ighalo has scored 18 goals in 23 league appearances in 2015 - more than any other player in the top four tiers this year

The Baggies have kept a clean sheet in over half of their 23 Premier League games under Tony Pulis

Newcastle have lost their last seven Premier League games played on a Monday, failing to score in the last four in a row

Hope to get a GW6 article out. Giggity

If people had to pick fantasy football teams around defenders, there would be a massive downturn in interest. Defenders aren't good footballers, generally.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Time to go on the defence

With so many full backs bringing in points, is now the time to seriously consider playing five at the back? Anyone had any success so far?

What about four at the back? Given strikers failing to pick up bonus, is it time to consider this as a viable option.

And what of captaining defenders. Arguably Kolarov is now among the best captaincy options when Man City have a kind fixture. With Aguero and others letting us down is this now a credible tactic?

The overall dream team contains 5 Man City players, so you have to replace Hart (31) with Myhill (30) and Yaya (33) with Hoolahan (31).

That's still 4-5-1, but playing 3 Man City defenders is rather putting all your eggs in one basket, and the 4th best defender (Cresswell, 28) only outscores the 2nd best forward (Gomis, 27) by one point.

So, unless you are going to play 3 City defenders, I would say that 3-5-2 appears to be the best formation at present.

The biggest problem right now with 5 at the back or even 4 is how we're already set up. I have money in the bank but it would still mean a bit of a shuffle away from 3-4-3 and by the time I've done it I might have to shuffle back again.

After 5 weeks I do think it's time to start shifting thinking completely but it's difficult, in the back of my mind I still think 3-4-3 will come good.

Giving defenders more thought now is definitely something we have to do but I won't completely change my team to do so.

As for captain - I still feel it's too risky, even though the points just aren't showing it right now. It's fear more than anything, just don't want to miss that big Aguero haul.

This is the exact problem I have. Until last night I kept thinking about taking hits to get a defense of Kompany, Kolarov, Shaw, Smalling + 1 other. Definitely glad I didn't.

It's just such a monumental switch from the 3-4-3 I've got at the minute.

It's been 5 successive slips away so far when captaining others!

We can't get it right every time, but it would be nice to get a few successes, and we could have got these by captaining Kolarov every time.

It seems as though this happens every year. I certainly remember two years ago when Baines and Coleman were ripping it up at the start of the year, people were thinking the same thing.

I don't think this year is THAT different. Yes, the change in BPS means that fullbacks and GKs might hog the baps when a team keeps a clean sheet. So *maybe* four at the back is justified.

But as always, over the long term, the Agueros and Sanchezes start to fire, and come season end, the point leaders won't be defenders.

I just wildcarded myself an expensive (for my standards) new defence. I think the poor form of the likes of Hazard, Rooney & Costa makes it a viable strategy.

I've not deliberately gone for fullbacks, just teams that have returned cleansheets so far; City, Brom, Saints, Swans & Watford. Only one CS for Swans so far actually but they're widely considered to be quite capable at the back.

Until forwards start hitting, I think midfielders are the way forward.

As a stubborn player, I will stick to forwards. Don't like captaining players just to bank a CS, I like goals.

I remember there being a community article preseason about someone thinking of doing this this season. It certainly influenced me to have a strong defence from the beginning thought I've only been playing 3 at the back. I've had Kolarov, bellerin, cedric and Azpi from the beginning of the season

Not for me, the premier league is hard to predict at the best of times, picking CS or fullback returns is even harder, I'm having issue just picking 3 out of 5 defenders Kolarov Gomez Williams Darmian Huth for GW 6 no way am I dropping Wilson Benteke or Kun when have home fixtures.
The Sanchez And Agueros (big hitters) will come good very soon I'm sure.

Playing 5 at the back doesn't make playing FPL much fun (hoping for clean sheets), so regardless of points I'd very, very rarely resort to it. Do play 4 on occasion, but 3 is def the norm and will continue to be for me

      Defenders, particularly full backs offer:

      Cleanie chances
Set pieces for some e.g. Kolarov
Assists and goals - several are playing wing back
Bonus points are skewing in their favour.

I'd argue they may now be less of a risk to captain.

Too early to reach this conclusion. Plus injuries to Shaw and Kompany will mean changes to City and Utd defences. Kolarov et al have been doing so well because of clean sheets, that might change now.

I was playing 4 at the back for the first time this week until shaw got injured, but it's def a very valid tactic

my all out attack was a total disaster as all three of my benched defenders would have improved half my team...

This week the 2nd in my ML had Myhill, Bellerin, Fonte, Richards, Kolarov.
All 9 pointers except Richards who did not have a CS but got an assist. This is a time for defenders surely.

I still think 3-5-2 is the best formation atm as midfielders are outscoring the strikers. I cant bring myself to have 4 at the back for the simple reason that picking a team who are going to keep a CS is very difficult - even with a defensive team like WBA. I much prefer having a balanced team and a strong bench for an auto-sub should one of my midfielders not play for whatever reason (Walcott GW1!)

Unitl the strikers start to score, I think a little more investment in the midfield is a viable option as it doesn't cost that much to upgrade, and can be easily swapped out once I return to 3 upfront.

outside of Kolarov and Sagna the most BPS are defender has got is 4 so averaging about one a week which is no more than most the MF or forwards for the same price.

I think what it does mean though is unless you fancy a CB to score you better served having 5 full backs (....checks team, 4 out of 5 full backs!)

Your post has made me think more about four at the back on my third strikers tough weeks so 4-4-3 as opposed to 3-5-2

That chip is pretty garbage but I doubt this the best time for you to play it. Payet will probably get 2 points away at City. Your third choice defender could easily get that

This chip has the potential to loose you points (i.e. the attacker you would have benched scores 2 and the defender you would have played scores 6 giving a net loss of minus 4)

    Kolarov (C)

    and here is why:

1 - doubts over aguero's game time - otherwise he is clear cut captain.

    2 - bookie odds:

clean sheet odds: 2.1 = 1.9 points yield for clean sheet (47.5% of 4)
    Goal odds: 3.8 = 28% of 6 points = roughly 1.9 points
Total 3.8 extra points before assists and bonus points

Now lets take Benteke for example (best odds to score this weekend outside of a city forward - with Wilson close but slightly behind))

goal odds: 1.9 = 2.1 points for goal

even if we assume benteke has slightly better chances for assists, this won't cover for the 1.7 points gap in favor of kolarov

    only other option is silva:
clean sheet odds:2.1 = extra 0.5 points for CS
    goal odds:2.0 = 2.5 points for goal

Kolarov still leads with 3.8 points VS 3.0 from Silva - however in this case Silva is more likely indeed to assists - but will this yield 0.8 points on average? i doubt it.

*note - i disregarded here the chances of multiple goals - where the non kolarov guys have significant advantage - however, those chances are rather small usually.

3 - how many times in your FPL career the best captain pick was also the most exciting one? its very rare..

sorry for the mess - not the most clear post ever - but hopefully makes enough sense.

Yep I posted this the other day:

With a doubt over Aguero, I may go through with my own advice. Kompany out may be a blow though.

Kompany out might indeed be an issue

Kompany out surely must be considered.

I'm not sure how much stock I would put into these calculations (although am open to being persuaded that they are more worthwhile than they seem). I think others have posted previously explaining the relationship (or lack of) between odds and probability.

Have you been using these calculations for long and have you found them to yield decent returns? i.e. pointing towards better picks than those at the top of the captain poll on here?

    Kolarov - Gomez - Francis
    Shaqiri - Sanchez - Mahrez (C) - Yaya
    Kun - Costa - Wilson

Ruddy - Richards -Westwood - Targett

After City is Payet a 'must'?
Will he continue to play in the hole?

I think he's worth a shout even against City esp. after Kompany injury

Red on the ticker, I see him retreating from the hole for the following 4-5 days. He'll be back there when it's safe to go in.

Noone is a 'must', and his stats aren't that good.

That being said, I'm Payet owner and happy to have him for upcoming games.

Ok, my WC team now looks like this:

    Myhill (Boruc)
Kolarov / Bellerin / Dier (Cresswell / Targett)
    Sanchez (c) / Sterling / Barkley / Mahrez (M'Vila)
    Aguero / Benteke / Wilson

0.0 itb. Still feeling it's not a perfect squad tho....
    So Fire at will! 🙂

      it's not Boruc but Begovic....

I still don't think Myhill is nailed on. Rather get a WBA defender for Targett or Dier

That's my opinion because they bought Lindegaard and Foster to come back. I don't think the last game settles the issue.

          others would disagree

    Shaw replacement:

United / Southampton / Arsenal have worst fixtures over next six...

WBA / Stoke / city have best fixtures over next six....

Already have 3x City, Butland and Myhill but am tempted to double up on WBA with those lovely fixtures.

Who's best Evans or Dawson or other??

Seems that way. Wonder if there's a WBA fan/expert out there who knows who is most nailed on across back 4?

Why? 3 CS in 5, CS in more than half of their games in Pulis' time, and good fixtures coming up.

I think I'd still look at Bellerin, I don't think their fixtures are THAT bad.
