Following the conclusion of Gameweek 5 with West Ham’s 2-0 victory against Newcastle, we’re rolling out the first of this week’s Watchlist articles this afternoon, with our rankings offering player recommendations for the next four-to-six Gameweeks. David de Gea and Asmir Begovic appear for the first time this season as cheaper routes into the Manchester United and Chelsea backlines respectively, while West Brom defensive options are the order of the day, after the Baggies chalked up a third shut-out in five ahead of some favourable fixtures.

GOALKEEPERS

Despite failing to keep a clean sheet so par this season, Jack Butland keeps his place on top of our ladder by virtue of Stoke’s kind looking fixture list (LEI, BOU, avl, swa, WAT, new) over the next six Gameweeks. The 4.5-priced keeper has also registered seven extra points through saves, which does boost his appeal.

Swansea’s Lukasz Fabianski will have frustrated his owners after conceding exactly one goal for the third week running in the weekend defeat to Watford, but the Poland international remains a strong option for Fantasy managers, priced at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). Garry Monk’s side face four home matches over the next six Gameweeks (EVE, sot, TOT, STO, avl, ARS), although the likes of Tottenham and Arsenal will be visiting the Liberty Stadium.

After retaining his place in goal for West Brom, despite the arrival of Anders Lindegaard at the Hawthorns, Boaz Myhill remains a great budget option in FPL. The 4.5-valued keeper has returned an impressive three clean sheets and six bonus points in five appearances, and with the forthcoming fixtures (avl, EVE, cpl, SUN, nor, LEI) offering hope of further shut-outs, Myhill’s stock continues to soar. Having said that, there remains some uncertainty over his starting position, with Lindegaard’s presence and the expected return to fitness of Ben Foster during the latter part of October casting doubts.

After signing a new four-year contract last week, and subsequently starting Man United’s last two matches, David de Gea is firmly back in our thoughts. The Red Devils do face a testing run of fixtures over the coming period (sot, SUN, ars, eve, MCI, cpl), with just two home matches, but having conceded just three goals so far this season, it’s not a huge surprise that over 55,000 Fantasy bosses have already drafted the 5.4-priced Spaniard in this week.

With Thibaut Courtois ruled out for around three months with a knee injury, Asmir Begovic, available at 5.0 in FPL, will offer Fantasy managers a cheaper route into the Chelsea backline. Having conceded 12 goals in five matches, the appeal of the Blues rearguard is limited at the moment, but with the schedule improving considerably after this weekend’s home clash against Arsenal (new, SOT, AVL, whm, LIV), the Bosnian is certainly one to monitor, given his price tag.

Crystal Palace’s Alex McCarthy returns to our rankings this week with the Eagles’ schedule over the coming month or so (tot, wat, WBA, WHM, lei, MUN) very reasonable. The other main attraction is his 4.1 valuation, making the former QPR stopper the cheapest starting goalkeeper in FPL, although Julian Speroni is closing in on a return to first-team action, and will challenge the Englishman for the starting position.

There’s no doubt Joe Hart (5.7) is in outstanding form, having yet to concede a goal in the league. With Bacary Sagna available at 5.1 in FPL, though, and Aleksandar Kolarov priced at 5.9, Hart perhaps isn’t the best route into the Man City backline. The England international has only picked up one save point so far, also limiting his chances of earning bonus points, while Sagna and Kolarov have both flourished in terms of attacking returns and extra bonus.

After conceding six goals in his last two outings, Simon Mignolet is a significant faller in our latest update. The Reds do have two favourable home fixtures (NOR, AVL) over the next two Gameweeks, but with the schedule thereafter (eve, tot, SOT, che) much tougher, the 5.1-rated keeper may struggle to deliver any more shut-outs, while he has only registered one extra save point so far this term, further denting his appeal.

While Maarten Stekelenburg (5.0) has managed to keep three consecutive clean sheets, Southampton’s difficult upcoming schedule (MUN, SWA, che, LEI, liv, BOU) means he drops a couple of spots this time around. The Dutch international is also yet to pick up a save point, although given the matches to come, that looks set to change.

Sunderland’s decent fixtures over the next six Gameweeks (bou, mun, WHM, wba, NEW, eve) mean Costel Pantilimon clings on to a spot on our ladder this week. Given his 4.9 price tag, though, there are clearly better options available to Fantasy managers, bearing in mind that the Black Cats have conceded 11 goals so far this season.

DEFENDERS

With an average of 9.2 points per appearance, there’s no doubt Aleksandar Kolarov has been one of the players of the season thus far. With four plum home fixtures (WHM, tot, NEW, BOU, mun, NOR) over the next six Gameweeks, the now 5.9-priced Serbian, who has registered more goal attempts (nine) than any other defender, looks set to continue rewarding his 24% FPL ownership with further returns at both ends of the pitch.

On the back of a third clean sheet this season, West Brom’s Craig Dawson moves up to second in our rankings. The 5.0-valued defender looks well placed to notch further defensive returns, given the Baggies upcoming fixtures (avl, EVE, cpl, SUN, nor, LEI), although having yet to register a bonus point, the cheaper Jonny Evans (4.8) may emerge as a better option over the coming weeks.

Bournemouth’s Simon Francis keeps his place towards the top of our ladder thanks to his attacking potential, which was again illustrated on Saturday, when the defender picked up his second assist of the season. The 4.5-rated right-back has created nine chances, more than any other defender, and certainly looks one of the better budget options at the back. Eddie Howe’s side still have three more favourable fixtures (SUN, sto, WAT) in which to register their first clean sheet of the season, with the schedule thereafter (mci, TOT, sou) looking much tougher.

With two strong fixtures (NOR, AVL) over the next couple of Gameweeks, Liverpool’s Martin Skrtel moves up a few places on our ladder. The Reds rearguard has looked decidedly shaky over the last two matches, conceding six goals, but the 5.5-priced defender certainly looks worth sticking with for the short-term, although the schedule from Gameweek 8 onwards (eve, tot, SOT, che) could spark something of a fire sale if he fails to produce the goods at Anfield over the next two weekends. Joe Gomez (4.8) is also close to overtaking the Slovakian as our preferred Liverpool option at the back if he can hold onto his place in the starting XI, after giving away a penalty in the 3-1 defeat at Old Trafford last weekend.

Kyle Naughton is a non-mover this week, with Swansea still looking relatively solid at the back. The former Tottenham man has also created eight chances so far this season, joint second among defenders, and offers a real possibility of returns at either end of the pitch, which, given his 5.0 price tag in FPL, holds plenty of interest.

Marc Muniesa remains around halfway up our ladder, but concerns over his prospects are mounting with Stoke struggling to keep things tight at the back. The fixture list (LEI, BOU, avl, swa, WAT, new) is still favourable for Mark Hughes’ side, but until the Potters pick up their first clean sheet, any further investment in the 4.5-rated defender appears unlikely.

Although Crystal Palace are yet to keep a clean sheet, Scott Dann is back in our thoughts, given the Eagles upcoming schedule (tot, wat, WBA, WHM, lei, MUN). The 5.0-rated defender is always a threat from set-pieces, and looks just about worth the extra outlay over Pape Souare (4.5).

Norwich’s Russell Martin is another who offers a threat from set plays, though the Canaries, like Palace, are yet to register a shut-out. Alex Neil’s men do face four reasonable fixtures (whm, LEI, new, WBA) over the next six Gameweeks, so the 4.5-priced Scotland international looks worth holding on to for the time being.

After picking up a third clean sheet in five matches in the 2-0 win against Newcastle, Aaron Cresswell (5.5) is another riser in our latest refresh. The former Ipswich man has already bagged two assists this season, and looks poised for further attacking points based on the fact he’s created seven chances for the Hammers, and also registered five goal attempts. Given the upcoming schedule (mci, NOR, sun, cpl, CHE, wat), further shut-outs also appear fairly likely if Slaven Bilic’s men can continue to keep the opposition out on their travels.

Like his Southampton team-mate Stekelenburg, right-back Cedric Soares falls this week due to a tricky run of upcoming fixtures. The 5.0-valued defender does benefit from his attacking threat, though, having created eight chances so far, and perhaps surprisingly only has an ownership of 4.3% in FPL.

Newcastle’s Daryl Janmaat is a climber this week, with the Magpies handed four friendly fixtures (WAT, CHE, mci, NOR, sun, STO) over the next six Gameweeks. The Dutch international registered an impressive five goal attempts in the 2-0 defeat at West Ham, three more than any other Newcastle player, while he racked up five touches in the penalty area, only bettered by striker Papiss Cisse’s six. Available at 4.9 in FPL and owned by just 3%, the right-back could be a handy differential, particularly after the Gameweek 8 trip to the Etihad.

There aren’t many defenders in better form over the last three Gameweeks than Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin, who is averaging 7.3 points per appearance during that period. The Spaniard has managed to create six chances so far, and while the Gunners’ upcoming fixtures (che, lei, MUN, wat, EVE, swa) are pretty treacherous, the 5.5-valued right-back still looks likely to deliver points for his 7.6% ownership, be it via defensive or attacking returns.

With United’s fixtures particularly difficult over the next month or so, Matteo Darmian remains towards the bottom of our rankings. The 5.7-rated defender has also only created three chances, which is something of a concern, as is his propensity to pick up yellow cards, with his third of the season coming against Liverpool last weekend.

On the back of a third successive home clean sheet in the 1-0 win against Swansea, Watford’s Allan Nyom earns a place on our ladder. The 4.5-priced defender has also racked up four bonus points, and faces a fairly favourable run of fixtures (new, CPL, bou, ARS, sto, WHM) through the rest of September and October.

Depay and D Sakho out for Benteke and Sako seems like a sensible move for 2FT's....right?

My other dilemma, like most, is Shaw. But should survive with him on the bench this week and afford a price drop rather than take a -4 hit.

Hmm... Do you need to lose Depay this week? Seems a bit odd if your retaining Shaw

0 ITB. Dropping Depay is due to both form and the desire to get Benteke in for good fixtures.

Depay's been good in the CL so far, but seems to have struggled with the more 'aggressive' football of the prem. I think he needs more bedding time than first thought. As a Utd fanI hope I'm wrong, but for FPL it's surely time to drop for better options.

Shaw would have been benched this weekend anyway and there's a slim chance he may not drop in price before the weekend. a -4 hit for another player who'd also likely be benched isn't worth it, so a potential 0.1 loss is the better option before selling Shaw next week.

Drop Depay and Sakho......I don't think Shaw will drop this week

  2. Shaw replacements

You have to feel for Luke Shaw. He was in excellent form and to pick up an injury like that at any stage is awful. With it looking like he is going to be out now for an extended period of time, managers who own the pacey left back need to a replacement as soon as possible.

There's a plethora of 'premium' defensive options available at our fingertips now, with Arsenal shoring up their defence, City looking unbeatable and West Brom's fantastic run of fixtures as well as their recent form at the back. I thought I would fan through the best replacements I can find to give those looking to offload Shaw something to mull over and hopefully reduce the countless posts of 'Shaw to who?'. Hopefully being the operative.

    Kolarov (5.9)

Need I say any more? Lord Aleksander is somewhat of a celebrity around these parts and for good reason. He has previously been renowned for scoring big one week, and registering nothing for weeks to come. This season however, has been different. With Clichy out, the Serbian has been a first team regular for City. They have banked 5 clean sheets out of 5 so far, with Kolarov registering a goal and 10 bonus points over their short but dominant run. Kolarov has the most goal attempts (9) of any defender, as well as the joint second most chances created (8) with Cedric and Naughton matching his tally. He also has the most touches in the final third (162) of any defender. Furthermore, he has received a total of 287 passes, again, bettering that or any other defender in the league. The stats don't end there either. Kolarov has made the most crosses (28) as well as the most successful crosses (10).

He looks to good to avoid right now, but for that reason, most of us already have him. For those looking to get rid of Shaw, they may need to look elsewhere.

    Bellerin (5.5)

Arsenal have began to solidify at the back in recent weeks after somewhat of a shaky start. Bellerin has tempted many a manager with an impressive display at the weekend seeing him dominate the BAPS and take away all 3 bonus points. The Spaniard has received the 3rd most balls (84) in the final third, beaten only by Kolarov and teammate Monreal. If you only count the last 4 gameweeks (since he didn't feature in the first due to injury) his stats are a lot more appealing. He has created 6 chances, bettered only by Francis and Naughton as well as the most touches in the final third of any defender (119) bettering Kolarov's 118. He has also recieved the most passes in the final third over his 4 games (84).

Arsenal's fixtures over the course of the season are mixed, so it looks like if you pick one up you will be owning one for the foreseeable. Monreal also looks a good pick, with less attacking potential than Bellerin but better stats and possibly better BAPS potential.

    Dawson (5.0)

West Brom's have the best fixtures (clean sheet wise) over the next couple of months and with a question mark around which of their 4.5 keepers will be the favorite between the sticks, we are forced to dish out a little extra if we want one of their defensive assets over their kind run. Evans has just joined, but showed his fragility going off in the 85th minute at the weekend. For a little extra, you can get Dawson, who looks a much better pick. He has registered the third most goal attempts (6) after Kolarov and Ivanovic so far, as well as 4 shots in the box, bettered only by Sir Aleks himself. He has been utilised at both CB and RB this season, with some good attacking displays when fielded at the latter (as he has been for the last 4 gameweeks). The issue lies with bonus points; he only managed 3 in the whole of last season.

He looks a great pick over WBA's fixtures, however the likes of Evans may outscore him due to superior BAPS potential.

    Sagna (5.1)

Hasn't been so popular round these parts despite City's fixtures. With Zabaleta ruled out, Sagna has continued to start for City and has done well. They are yet to concede a league goal so far this season and over this run, Sagna has charted 7 bonus points. His underlying stats aren't quite as obviously impressive as the others, but a quick overview shows he has performed consistently across the board. Zabaleta is yet to return to training, but could do so at any moment. However, with strong personal and team performances to date, it is questionable whether or not Zabaleta will slot right back into the starting line up. Nevertheless, Sagna looks like he has a good few weeks of games in him, at least. The issue could be that after buying him, you may be looking at shipping him again after only a few games, so for those wanting a longer term option this is something to consider.

5.1 for a City defender looks great value, even for a short run. They have form and fixtures; Sagna looks a good cheap way into their back line.

    Cresswell (5.5)

Someone who isn't mentioned too often on here but perhaps should be. West Ham's fixtures after the City game are wonderful. Even with Adrian out, they have managed to pick up a couple of clean sheets. Cresswell has already picked up 2 assists so far this season too, and has shown his phenomenal attacking potential once again. He doesn't have too many impressive stats to his name, but 7 chances created and 5 goal attempts are nothing to dismiss. These numbers will almost certainly improve over the coming weeks.

West Ham have looked very good overall this season, barring that woeful performance against Bournemouth. They should register some clean sheets over their kind run, and one would hope Cresswell will continue to bring in attacking returns.

    tl;dr?

Personally, this would be my preferable order:

    1. Kolarov
    2. Bellerin
    3. Dawson
    4. Cresswell
    5. Sagna

Although it's close between 2 and 3, but I put them in that order solely because Bellerin is a more expensive, play each week defender like Shaw and Dawson can easily be purchased as a 3rd/4th defender.

I don't think it would be too difficult.

You could just use a symbol like $ to mark the beginning and end of the concealed data. Then when a comment is submitted; the text gets parsed, looks for the symbol, and conceals that part from non-members,,,

Of course, mods could sort that kind of thing out but it required more effort on their behalf.

the whole team was pretty average last team (particularly Kompany who had a woeful season) so it's a bit harsh to say the same of Zabaleta, I think he'll have to earn his place back but he probably will sooner rather than later, once he's fit.

zabaleta had an average season by his very high standards thats true.. sagna has been bang average his whole career.. when both are fit zab starts

And the session before Sagna was bang average and Zabaleta barely put a foot wrong in that term

I just think there will be a massive risk of rotation when Zabaleta ruturns

As a Pool fan I don't really rate our players right now. I think Gomez will remain a regular starter for the foreseeable so I'd rather have him than Clyne. If we can show some more defensive form and Clyne shows his attacking potential, I think he will then be one to consider.

As a United fan Clyne was the only Liverpool player to really impress me besides that moment of brilliance from Big Ben

Clyne has the license to get forward and even when Liverpool concede he has the potential to produce attacking returns

Why wait for up turn in form even Liverpool have good runs in any given session

This season has strongly indicated the case of Form > Fixtures.

Unless Clyne shows signs of producing at the rate he was last season I am avoiding. He is more expensive than he was when most of us picked him up last season and he isn't scoring nearly as well as he was.

Just my personal opinion. He is my second choice as a Shaw replacement in general, as those with Shaw would be keeping him in the long run through their tough fixtures. Bellerin is much the same, one to keep for the long run.

Chelsea are in poor form; they could easily keep a CS there. Leicester and Man U will probably score, but after that the fixtures look sound. Always a chance of attacking returns too.

Fixtures mostly, they are very tough. I wouldn't necessarily sell Southampton defenders if I owned them, but I wouldn't advise buying them ahead of such a run.

As I said above, I think VVD, Bertrand, Fonte and Cedric will all be excellent options from GW10 onward and I'm considering a double up.

Yes, fair enough. It's still an Arsenal defender at the end of the day and should be good FPL wise.
Tho your point on attacking returns has seen me go with Cresswell. His fixtures are better and he is probably better at attacking returns than Bellerin

I prefer Williams personally but both are good options. Swansea have been good defensively but haven't actually displayed that in the form of clean sheets and when it comes to FPL that's what matters. If I had unlimited time on my hands I would have included several other players, but these are a few who I deem the best replacements.

If you don't already have him the answer is Bellerin. The best full back in the league imo playing for one of the best clean sheet teams.

Funny how overlooked he is on here yet everybody hypes up Francis and Stoke defenders.

      Good post .
I want to replace Ogbonna , so Iam looking at the same players ,
It comes down to Bellerin or Dawson .
With Myhill already in my team it would be better to have Bellerin , also though WB have easy fixtures they defend harder against the big teams and go for the game against the smaller teams , so maybe the easy easy fixtures do directly mean more cleanies for him .
But with UCL , is rotation a possibility for Bellerin and is he injury prone , is Koscielny a better buy ?

      1. Rödallegabomb ᴿᴮ

I'd go for Bellerin, especially since you have Myhill.

As we have seen tonight, he has been rested for UCL as Arsenal also have Debuchy. He has a good attacking threat and if he performs like he did at the weekend he will get his fair share of BAPS too.

Dawson is a good pick, but a better 3rd/4th defender.

Yes the tally of 3 YCs already is slightly off-putting, a possibly suspension and losing out on bonus and points because of this is the one thing putting me off.

I do think United's defence has some positives though, with good DMs in Carrick, Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin, and a great keeper in DDG.

    1) Team G2G?

    McCarthy (Butland)
    Kolarov Gomez Francis (Dawson Targett)
Mahrez (C) Sanchez Silva Pedro (Westwood)
    Kun Gomis Wilson

    2) Really considering benching Pedro and rolling out Dawson instead. Foolhardy?

Nope I doubt Tekkers will be dropped but something's gotta give.

          - BR likes playing with 3 up front and 3 in midfield, change of formation could impact.

          - Sturridge left Chelsea due to being played on the wing.

          - Benteke plays best as a target man up front
