It’s fair to say we’ve plenty of topics to discuss after an eventful Gameweek 6 came to its conclusion on Sunday. Eden Hazard’s return to form, Liverpool’s new formation, David Silva’s injury worries and Anthony Martial’s impact on United’s attack are all amongst the topics to make our Monday Gameweek retrospective.

There’s a spring in Hazard’s step again…
At long last, the Chelsea winger is off the mark after bagging his first goal of the season in the weekend win over Arsenal. After serving up just a single assist in the first five Gameweeks, Hazard has been sold by over 818,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers as former owners look for better value. Now down to 11.3 in FPL, his first double-figure haul of the campaign offers a perfect reminder of his points potential as the Blues prepare for a fine run of fixtures.

…So Sanchez needs to produce soon…
With Hazard struggling, many had turned to the Arsenal wide man as their premium midfielder of choice due to his strong underlying statistics. Whilst Sanchez continues to serve up eye-catching numbers, his lack of end product is a growing concern at a time where the fixtures start to turn against the Gunners. Sanchez is likely to be afforded a reprieve for next week’s trip to Leicester’s porous defence but with the schedule tightening from Gameweek 8, a switch to Hazard could be on the cards.

Zouma is a factor as Terry’s stock plummets…
It’s four straight starts now for the youngster, who appears to have secured himself a regular role in the heart of Jose Mourinho’s defence. Since replacing John Terry at the break in Gameweek 2, Zouma has played every minute and strengthened his claim for consideration by racking up 15 points against the Gunners. Terry – who had played every minutes of last season – continues to be alternated with Gary Cahill as Jose Mourinho looks to rest his skipper’s tiring legs and spares him against pacey opposition.

Newcastle are sitting ducks…
A home defeat to Watford means the Magpies have mustered just one point and a single goal in the last five Gameweeks. Despite the hefty summer outlay, there’s been little sign of progress on Tyneside – Steve McClaren’s side sit bottom for shots (50) and have managed just 14 efforts on target in six matches. Toiling at both ends of the pitch, they now face Chelsea and City in back-to-back matches as the malaise looks set to continue.

….and Sunderland have no reason to be smug…
Newcastle’s domestic woes have been mirrored by Dick Advocaat’s side as the north east duo prop up the table after six rounds of fixtures. The resilience that served up 13 clean sheets in 2014/15 looks long gone as the Black Cats continue to ship goals at an alarming rate – a 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth means they’ve been breached more times (13) than any side so far. Having failed to score in each of the last two since moving to a 4-2-3-1, there’s no reason for optimism ahead of clashes with United, West Ham and West Brom’s backline in the following three.

Silva’s fragility is becoming a concern…
The City playmaker has now missed back-to-back league outings after being ruled out of the weekend home clash with West Ham. With the likes of Raheem Sterling and Kevin de Bruyne bolstering Manuel Pellegrini’s options in the final third this term, it seems that the City boss is prepared to court caution when it comes to Silva’s fitness. First an ankle injury, now a calf complaint – can we afford to keep faith in the 10.2-priced Silva and rely on our benches to bail us out any more?

City can’t cope without Kompany…
The home loss to the Hammers coincided with Vincent Kompany’s first absence of the season. City were overwhelming favourites last weekend after serving up five straight clean sheets but they looked far from resilient with their captain on the sidelines. Given the upcoming fixtures, those holding City defenders will be more than happy to hold but it’s clear that their prospects for defensive returns are significantly improved with Kompany’s presence in the back-four.

Sigurdsson is a fading star….
Yet another blank last weekend means the Swansea playmaker has managed just a single assist in the first six outings. It’s a real fall from Fantasy grace for Sigurdsson, who’d racked up seven goals and ten assists in his first season under Garry Monk last time around. After playing all but five minutes of the first four, the midfielder has been subbed off on 70 and 60 minutes respectively in the last two, with his influence waning on the Swans’ attack.

Vardy won’t let Mahrez hog the headlines….
The Foxes duo continue to bring in points, with both once again delivering for their owners in Saturday’s comeback draw at Stoke. Mahrez may be hogging the headlines but Vardy deserves credit for a series of consistent displays – a goal at the Britannia was his third strike in successive outings. Indeed, the 6.2-priced striker has blanked in just one of the first six, richly rewarding those who opted for a double-up on Claudio Ranieri’s attack.

Bolasie is no striker…
Palace’s recent goal drought has coincided with Alan Pardew’s decision to handed the DR Congo international the lone forward role. With Connor Wickham still sidelined through injury, the Eagles boss has ignored the likes of Patrick Bamford, Dwight Gayle and Frazier Campbell and turned to Bolasie to lead the line instead. Given that Palace scored eight goals in the first four – including a 2-1 win at Chelsea – Pardew needs to address his side’s woes up top, with a more physical presence surely needed to boost their appeal ahead of some kind fixtures.

McCarthy’s tenure could be under threat…
One of the very few sub-4.5 options available to Fantasy managers, the Palace stopper’s security of starts looks in question after he was criticised by Alan Pardew in light of yesterday’s loss to Spurs. McCarthy has yet to manage a clean sheet in the first six Gameweeks and with Julian Speroni stepping up his fitness drive after weeks on the sidelines with a hand problem, those holding the former QPR keeper could soon be making plans for a way out.

Martial looks a risk worth taking….
In a season where form has been the overriding factor, United’s big-money signing has made an instant impact. After scoring as a sub against Liverpool, Martial has been fast-tracked to the starting XI and has instantly added a cutting edge to the Red Devils, with a finely-taken brace away to Southampton last time out. Despite some testing fixtures to follow after the weekend visit of Sunderland, the bandwagon is in full flow and with a price of just 8.1, it’s hard to resist Martial if he continues to cement a place in Louis van Gaal’s first-team plans.

Southampton have issues at full-back…
Six matches into the season and the Saints’ defence is still very much a work in progress. Whilst new boy Virgil van Dijk looks to have secured a starting role alongside Jose Fonte in the heart of the back-four, Ronald Koeman still seems unconvinced by the rest of his defence. Cedric Soares was dropped for the first time this term at right-back, whilst left-back Matt Targett – who had previously managed every minute of the season – was hauled off at the break against United. The imminent return of Ryan Bertrand should improve things but Koeman looks unconvinced by his options on the right.

…and United have problems there too…
Louis van Gaal also subbed off both his full-backs in yesterday’s win as concerns over United’s defence increase. The Dutchman conceded he hooked Matteo Darmian due to the Italian’s inability to stop Dusan Tadic on the Saints’ left, whilst the unconvincing Marcos Rojo was handed 80 minutes due to Luke Shaw’s long-term injury before being replaced by Paddy McNair. Having opened the season with a trio of clean sheets, United have now been breached five times in the subsequent three and with Arsenal, Everton and City in the next four, their recent lack of resilience will have many thinking twice over investing.

Norwich will manage Hoolahan’s pitch time…
Dropped to the Norwich bench for the weekend trip to Liverpool, it’s clear that the veteran’s pitch time is far from assured as Alex Neil opts for a horses for courses approach. With four assists already, Hoolahan’s creativity is clearly vital to the Canaries’ survival prospects and Neil’s weekend teamsheet at Anfield is perhaps an indication that Hoolahan is surplus to requirement when the Canaries are looking to tighten up defensively and cover ground in midfield. Seven testing fixtures (mci, SWA, che, ARS, EVE, mun, tot) in eight from Gameweek 11 onwards may well see the Republic of Ireland man struggle for attention as a fifth midfielder.

The Gomez option looks done and dusted…
Brendan Rodgers’ decision to finally switch his tactics and recall Alberto Moreno and Mamadou Sakho to the starting XI looks like bad news for a couple of Liverpool defenders. Those holding Dejan Lovren and Joe Gomez will now be mulling over their options, with Moreno’s assist for Danny Ings’ strike looking likely to keep the Spaniard in the frame for the weekend home clash against Villa. Whilst Lovren sits in just 2% of sides, Gomez’ 20% FPL ownership now seem set to turn their attentions elsewhere as Rodgers looks to last term’s 3-4-1-2 set-up to help steer him out of trouble. Another spot on the bench at home to Villa and the exodus will pick up pace.

Morning guys. Current team is : -

    Fabianski / McCarthy
    Darmian / Targett / Richards / Kolarov / Lovren
Yaya Touré / Ayew / Sánchez / Mahrez / Westwood
    Agüero / Gomis / Wilson

1 FT, £3.8m in the bank.

    Any transfer suggestions? Was thinking,

    A. Gomis >> Martial after the cup games seeing as I've already missed the price rises.
    B. Westwood >> Payet/Barkley and Bench Gomis.
    C. Targett >> Azpilicueta.

Guys, I have some doubts. If anyone knowledgeable gentlemen around. Please help.
I was having an argument with a friend regarding the Costa incident. I'm a Chelsea supporter and he's a United one.I totally agree that Costa should've been sent off for that flaying arm on Koscienly. But according to my friend, he could've had two yellow fpr first barging into Kosc, second the Gabriel fight. Now this got me thinking. Can the ref do that? Can he tell costa that he's been given two yellow for two incidents. Take for eg. The Di Maria card. He dived, got a yellow, pulled the ref, got a yellow. Can the ref do this: 1) fight with Kosc (barging him worthy of a yellow), Gabriel fight (worthy of a yellow), ref produces two yellows. According to me a yellow should be given and that would mean the player should play with caution. But that would mean that a player can keep doing anything till the ref removes his card from the pocket. Similarly, if a player commits a yellow card foul, ref plays advantage and the player commits another foul can the ref produce two yellows when the play stops? Kindly comment if you can leave all your bias towards any club and think with a bit of open mind. Cheers

the former bit yes, of 2 bookable offences he committed and the ref stops the game.

the latter scenario of 2 tackles in one play where ref waves play on...then i don't think so.

Interesting. Plausible though, as refs can still book players even after he waves play on as advantage doesn't mean a foul wasn't committed.

Not an expert, but yea definitely plausible.

You have to give a yellow first - it constitutes a warning - then if the player carries on you can give a second. But refs shouldn't produce a red unless either of the acts of foul play constitute a red in their own right.

Another yellow-card offence, yes, in theory. But the game has stopped so there's not many ways to get a yellow, but quite a few that can give him a straight red. So he can't do 'anything'. but if he has a go at two opposing players, say, without any incident which would be a straight red, then he should only get a yellow, by the letter of the law.

I think the ref was wrong in this case - which is also possible. Most referees defend the Baird referee's incident on the basis that the second yellow should have been a red in its own right. So the sending off was deemed 'correct' but it shouldn't have been handled as two separate yellows.

          1. Donkey_Sanctuary

It is a subject which splits opinion. They have an interesting discussion about that incident of the guardian football weekly podcast (from 02:33)

            http://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/audio/2015/sep/10/football-weekly-extra-podcast-wayne-rooney-record-breaker

I personally think the ref is right to give two yellows in the same passage of play. The fact that in this case the second one could have been worthy of a red in it's own right is irrelevant - he could have even given him a yellow for the first incident and a straight red for the second.

If you look at it in a different context if someone gets a harsher sentence from a court because they robbed two people and the defendants lawyer says "He wouldn't have robbed the second person if he had been caught for the first one" I don't think it would be a decent argument.

Looks like most refs agree that it should have been a straight red for the second challenge. It would have saved a lot of bother if he had.

That would have made it easier in this case but I think the more interesting point is to look at this in general and decide if giving two yellows to the one player in the same passage of play is correct referring. In a hypothetically situation when both are yellow card offences (with no dispute over whether one wasn't bad enough to be a yellow / one of them should have actually been a red)

For me, I think the ref should be able to do this but you (and by the sounds of it some referees) seem to think that a ref can only give one yellow.

Referees are instructed not to play advantage when they're going to pull a red card, so in the last case you describe, I think the only possibility would be to stop the game at the second foul and give that double yellow then. Player definitely is not allowed to do just anything just because the ref has not yet pulled the yellow for him. Particularly in Costa's recent situation, as the ref hadn't yet reacted to the Koscielny part.

I can give you one extremely clear example: Huszti, one of the most exciting players ever played football, scored a late bicycle kick winner in the derby against Werder (having already scored their first and assisted second goal), pulled off his shirt and ran to the stands to celebrate with the fans. When he returned to the pitch, he was given one yellow for removing his shirt, and another for running to the stands, both "excessive celebration" fouls sanctioned by a yellow card in rules, and thus sent off before the game was restarted after his goal.

He just followed the rules. Not his fault that the rules are a bit dim.

You know the French youth prospect Alexy Bosetti? He's an ultra of his team Nice, and very close to the fans, and every time he scores for Nice he runs at the stands of ultras to show his tattoos (that have to do with the club mythology), and always gets a yellow card.

Such warnings are very ridiculous, I agree, but don't blame the refs, blame the associations who want to tame celebration down to keep politics, culture and such out of the football and have it for the commercial use of the sponsors only.

Thanks, if this was not sarcastic.

I guess I absorb a lot of knowledge in general and have enough of age to have had time to get to know some football on the way. I guess that that impression is also much helped by the fact that I follow primarily European football and PL mostly just because of FPL, and as people here don't follow much European football, knowledge of it easily makes impression. Bosetti and Huszti are not unknown players in Europe, rather famous figures in their respective regions, not only as players but as personalities.

Huszti is also famous for getting himself out of the Hungary for publicly telling that their coach is an inapt idiot. In the end, the federation found out that Huszti was right all the way, but it was too late by then.

Also, I'm not sure if Bosetti has got warned _every_ time, it may be that some ref has forgotten to give him the yellow card. That would be easy to check, however, as he hasn't scored that many goals so far.

Btw, Bosetti stays on the side of the field, so he gets the warning exactly for showing the tattoos. That's the most ridiculous thing about it in my honest opinion.

Everyone is taking out Benteke and switching to Martial. Yes, Martial is a good prospect for this GW but Benteke is too. He was taken off at HT as a precaution and will surely start against his old club on Saturday.

I will be holding, especially for this GW anyway and also putting the armband on him.

They would have conceded some goals if not because of the goal post and Lloris superb saves, have been lucky for the last 2 games. But their defence looks better compare to last season, at least last game vs Palace was impressive, only concern is their high defensive line. The defence hardly in good shape when they rush back to defend if the opponent intercepted their ball possession.

Dier is really making a difference but having said that if Sunderland weren't so wasteful against them 2 games ago they could have easily conceded 2 that game and we would all be saying how bad the defence is. Lots of luck so far but still an improvement on the past.

        Via stats bomb-

West Ham are having a great time. Four wins in six games, goals aplenty and one of the league’s early stars in Dimitri Payet. How good would it be if he could pull a Bale or Suarez and carry his team to previously unimagined heights? To pitch hard for a European slot, to maintain the run and bring overdue footballing glories back to East London?

In their current favour they sit third and lead the league alongside Leicester for goals scored with thirteen. They have also picked up three extremely hard to predict away wins and have ridden happily through a tough schedule. However, where we can suggest that parts of Leicester’s form are positive and potentially sustainable, like their shot rates, West Ham’s underlying numbers provide a delightful early storyline that points in only one direction: massive potential reversion. So extreme is their skew that it can be approached from multiple angles.

The wider analytics community is already on this. Steve McCarthy‘s expected goals model places West Ham 18th, Paul Riley’s subtly different expected goals model also places them 18th.

Humble old counting shot metrics place them down towards the bottom: 18th and 17th in shots For and Against, 13th and 15th in the on target equivalents. So how on earth are they doing so well?

The thirteen goals are a product of a mere twenty-two shots on target- 59%, which give or take is double the league average and a full 14% ahead of Leicester, who as we discovered moments ago are running extremely hot. West Ham are transcending heat with a rate this high. But there are aspects of their games that have contributed to this strange efficiency:

        “What like?”

“In their last three games, all of which they won, West Ham have taken the lead inside ten minutes and in these games and the victory against Arsenal they have added to the score to make it 2-0.”

“Okay, that seems unlikely, but not entirely remarkable…”

“How about this then? In their four wins, West Ham have scored with their first shot on target.”

“Right… that’s interesting and sounds like a kind of thing that won’t repeat.”

“For sure, it won’t, it isn’t a skill. And you know what else? In each of those games, they also scored with their second shot on target.”

“Wow, Bilic for Prime Minister, right? I mean there may be a vacancy…”

What we find then is West Ham have spent more time this season at 2-0 than any other scoreline. They have spent 299 minutes leading, a full 76 minutes more than anyone else. With such regular and solid leads, it is arguable that they have been shelling for long periods of time, but this positive skew hasn’t stopped at their rate of scoring, the opposition are taking a ton of shots but only converting them at 7%, and the overall save percentage is a high 78%. It’s flowing right for West Ham at both ends. The problem being that these metrics have been shown not to sustain. West Ham’s underlying metrics have powered a freak run, will definitely decline and this is likely to be as good as it gets for them.

As a reverse of what I was saying re arsenal it is also quite possible that West ham's stats are underrepresentative because they've scored so early. Especially in the tougher games as they then have no need to attack and can park the bus, whereas if they hadn't scored they would attack more frequently.

It's still very lucky. Very very lucky. And their scoring is even luckier. Given a big enough sample (like all football matches played) this kind of anomalies will happen, but it doesn't mean they can continue to reproduce that.

In 2013/14 Yaya Toure had 27 shots on target and scored from 20 of those. I'm sure there were similar statisticians saying the same thing during that season. I think luck, form and confidence all go hand in hand so I'm going to ride the Payet wave until...West Ham don't score from their first shot on target haha.

Wait for more news on Silva and Benteke. Remove whoever does not make it for this week.

Thanks, I m thinking so too. Don't think I can afford to cling to Sagna and Vardy much longer.

Vardy is fine , even Sagna . I would get rid of Obertan this week, save a FT , and Darmian next week

Dunno if i'd want mahrez AND vardy, tho Obertan does need to go. Darmian out next week sounds good 😉

Well that's me priced out of Martial now

        Oh well
Can definitely see him scoring vs Sunderland - my worry remains tho, it's the fixtures afterwards.

Sunderland have a history of turning around their season when least expected (did it against Chelsea last year 2-3 matches after losing 8-0)

Long as Martial gets the 2 goals that would be perfect

Evans or Moreno? Would rather have a West Brommer long term but Evans is rarely a long term pick. Moreno much more exciting but far from nailed on

Evans or Dawson if you can stretch imo

        Who to captain? I'm torn!

        A) Aguero - can explode this week, but haven't yet found his form.
        B) Payet - good form and fixture, but unsure how much he'll score this week
        C) Martial - good form and good fixture, but unstable. Except from the LIV-goal, the rest has been because of defensive errors.

        Who would you pick?

Sunderland are going to make loads of defensive errors.
