Ben Foster suffers an injury setback for the Baggies. Graziano Pelle is passed fit for Southampton. Christian Benteke, Roberto Firmino and Dejan Lovren are all sidelined for Liverpool, whilst Francis Coquelin misses Arsenal’s trip to Leicester.

Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that Christian Benteke, Dejan Lovren and Roberto Firmino are all ruled out of Liverpool’s home encounter with Villa this weekend. Lovren is out for a few weeks with ankle ligament damage, whilst Firmino “may have cracked something in his back”. The Reds boss has also conceded “there is no timeline” on Benteke’s return from a hamstring injury.

Francis Coquelin has been ruled out of Arsenal’s trip to Leicester with a knee problem. The Gunners are awaiting the FA’s verdict on Gabriel’s improper conduct charge later today.

West Brom stopper Ben Foster has suffered a setback in his battle to overcome a knee injury, with Tony Pulis suggesting that Foster is now expected to return around Christmas time.

The weekend will again come too soon for Tommy Elphick, with Eddie Howe confirming the Cherries defender has failed to recover from the ankle problem which saw him miss out against Sunderland. Elphick joins Harry Arter on the sidelines, with the latter still unavailable due to a groin injury.

Ronald Koeman has allayed fears over Graziano Pelle, revealing that the Italian is available for the weekend after recovering from a foot injury. The Saints boss will also make a late decision on whether to start Ryan Bertrand against the Swans, stressing that the left-back needs games now he has returned from injury. Elsewhere Jordy Clasie is back in full training, though the weekend will come too soon for the summer signing.

Garry Monk has a fully-fit squad to choose from for the Swans’ trip to St Mary’s.

Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri has no new injury concerns ahead of the meeting with Arsenal. The Foxes are still without Nathan Dyer, though, with the winger still not 100% fit after suffering a blow to the knee against Aston Villa.

Slaven Bilic has revealed that there are a few knocks to assess in the Hammers camp ahead of the visit of the Canaries, though adds that they isn’t anything “major or serious” .

Louis van Gaal has more worries at left-back, after Marcos Rojo was ruled out of United’s home clash against Sunderland due to a hamstring injury.

Watford veteran Lloyd Doyley stepped up his recovery with a run out for the reserves yesterday. He was also joined by new signing Mamadou Oulare, who improved his match fitness with a 90-minute appearance. Hornets boss Quick Sanchez Flores reckons Adlene Guedioura, Steven Berghuis and Nathan Ake are “close to being ready for the starting XI”.

All this and more has now been updated in the Team News section ahead of tomorrow’s deadline. Keep an eye on our official Twitter Stream as breaking news unfolds.

Statistically less goals, but more of a superstition than that.

Has anybody conducted a real statistical study on this subject? I bet somebody has just counted an average and decided that it explains itself. But it seems obvious that there are many variables, so a regression analysis would be needed to make such conclusions.

Or, in fact, at least just compare similar matches to each other. I.e. is there a significant difference between the number of goals in matches between top4 teams that are the first of the round, and the matches between top4 teams in general. There's a great chance that these results are skewed because the matches moved for a better broadcasting tend not to be the ones where a big team meets a weakling.

You know, what I mean is at least compare objects that are similar.

E.g. suppose that City played PL only on Saturdays and Sundays, 19 matches on both, but it happened that 13 of their Saturday matches were against top table oppositions and only 5 of their Sunday matches were such, so that they played a low table opposition 14 times on a Sunday. I would bet that City would score significantly more goals on Sundays than Saturdays, but it would not be because the Saturday was a worse day to play football.

You're right. It probably has something to do with the quality of teams that play those early matches and another thing is, if your captain blanks your whole gameweek kind of feels ruined after.

      Same boat here too...

I think I'm going with Payet over Kun.

Tottenham are in fairly decent form despite Kun's goal scoring record vs them. Kun missed an open goal after his pen conversion.

Payet's high scores all seem to be with home fixtures and Norwich have conceded 3rd highest in the league behind SUN and CHE.

I've not seen Sanchez perform well since his headed goal first game of the season.

Despite all of this, Kun will probably score a brace and I'll be back to ignoring all of the stats.

Good team but time to sort out the defence.

      Ward to Cresswell?

Ward is out for another few weeks so defo won't get any points where as Gomez still could play.

i was so disappointed in huth during the villa game, looked like half the player he used to be, and morgan i'll never trust!

as soon as ngolo and kante bed in together i'm sure the clean sheets will starting trickling in but i'm still looking to let go of huth due to him and morgan

Your table is wrongly filtered. It should be that Lei is 9th best, but have in mind then didn't play to top 4 (I think even top6 side till now)

Only 3 teams have conceded more goals than them which is pretty bad. That's what most folk will go on without getting too deep into the stats.

I like that table though some useful info. Surprised that Stoke are quite that poor

They concede 1 or 2 goals every game, they are yet to keep a clean sheet, and only Sunderland, Chelsea and Norwich have conceded more goals. That outweighs all the other stats for me.

They've got a great attack though.

People may have had some from the start of the season though and be considering getting rid. I certainly am with Schmeichel but struggling to justify a keeper transfer when I'm planning to wildcard in a few weeks.

Wanting to get rid of them is completely fair enough - and Schmeichel / Morgan looked to be reasonable picks pre season.

The subject of this hot topic suggests though that people should consider keeping them or even getting them in. Or at least someone is playing devils advocate with some misleading stats and it's generated this fairly daft discussion

Have you looked at the member's table? Stop taking things at face value and delve deeper into the stats. Maybe you will see reason 🙂

I had previously said that I like the table and think it's useful info. However, due to LEI defenders not scoring many points (which is a trend I think will continue) I won't be looking to get any. If you believe that they will get a lot of clean sheets then feel free to double up 🙂

My main point was that people were holding on to Sanchez, even captaining him because they assumed the Leicester defence was terrible. I wanted to show those people that this wasn't the case. I can understand your point though and I'm not suggesting a double/triple up on Leicester defenders 😛

Fair enough. That table makes more sense to reason that Arsenal won't put 5 past them than it does as an argument for drafting in LEI defenders. I get your point now!

The point of this discussion was not to dismiss Leicester's defence so quickly without looking at the stats. People are keeping Sanchez, even though he is terribly out of form, because they assume that Leicester defence is bad. Some are even captaining him!

I suppose I'm a bit of a maverick in that way.

I like some kinds of statistics but, unlike many here, the underlying stats and members tables are not my favourites.

I am prepared to listen to recommendations based on them, but I think it is sometimes better to take things at face value.

In the case of Leicester defenders, I don't intend to put any of them on my watch list until they start getting some clean sheets and bonus points, and perhaps the odd goal or assist, whatever their underlying stats might say.

Till then, I would much prefer to have defenders from other teams.

I had a dispute with Dino a couple of years ago, when he called me a noob for not agreeing with him that Yaya was not a good FPL player.

He was basing his opinion on Yaya's underlying stats, his record in previous seasons not being outstanding, and his claim that Yaya was just a defensive midfielder.

My opinion though took into account that, as well as being the top-scoring midfield points scorer of that half-season in FPL, he was also playing for a new and more attack-minded manager who had given him more licence to bomb forward from his position as the attacking member of the double pivot, that he had become a deadly free-kick taker, and that he was a quality player who had been named African Footballer of the Year on three occasions.

The underlying stats do not always tell the full story, and are sometimes almost irrelevant when other factors are taken into account.

Martial has only 4 goal attempts in his 2 premier league games, surely that's not good enough to warrant captaining him? Can't maintain that level of conversion.

I've bought him, but I'm finding it difficult to captain him with that underlying stat.

Does anyone have any views on captaining a midfielder vs a striker from the same team with a favourable fixture? For example, I have Sakho and Payet (vs Norwich at home) this week. Assuming for a moment that the two of them have been in equal form (which they haven't), which would be the go to option? Midfielder vs striker.

Midfielder can get 2 extra points if he blanks compared to a striker so i'd edge with the MID, but depends on the team for sure.

If on similar form then you have to go for the striker as they are likely to have more chances of scoring. But Payet is outperforming Sakho at present so in that situation you would choose Payet

Play Mahrez against Arsenal or go for a Payet Moses double-up?

From my front 8 (Mahrez, KDB, Oscar, Payet, Ayew, Gomis, Wilson and Kun) I'm in doubt whether to bench Gomis or Ayew. Think I'm leaning towards Ayew as I feel in a tight match which I think it'll be Gomis has a slightly better chance to score than Ayew

Morning all, this mornings Scoutcast has got me thinking (as ever!!)

I don't have Payet, I want Martial, but the only way I can do this is by taking -8. (Gomis -> Martial, Ayew -> Payet and Cedric ->Targett)

    OR...

I could do it for -4, but it would be Sanchez or Pedro -> Payet

    Thoughts/suggestions anyone?

    My team:

Butland / Lindegaard (will be Myhill when I get a quiet transfer week haha)
    Kolarov, Cresswell, Dawson, Francis, Cedric
    Pedro, Sanchez, Ayew, Mahrez, Davis
    Aguero, Wilson, Gomis

If I had to pick one Demi, I'd go for Sanchez simply because Leicester don't yet have a CS and Spurs are starting to look a bit more solid at the back, imho.

So Targett probably has two games max left. McCarthy probably will be first choice. Gomez will be rotated constantly. Unfortunately I have all three so looking to get rid!

    That's my thoughts, agree?

McCarthy has no CSs with Speroni who I think was excellent before his injury due back to full fitness soon.
If I were manager I'd have Speroni between the sticks in an instant. But maybe a bit unfair to McCarthy who has had some tough games.

If he is just out for one week no need for a hit imo if you have a decent bench. Who would come in for Silva?

      1. Jay10

Hmm not great back-up, but stoke defense is awful, he may give you something. In your position I would still not take the hit if Silva is only out for a week. However I am very conservative with hits and highly rate Silva.

To answer your original question, I believe KDB is the better option if you chose to take a hit.

People seem to slag off Rodgers a lot on here. I've heard him called an idiot, clueless, a joke, etc etc. I don't follow Liverpool any where close enough to have formed much of an opinion on him.

I'm curious to know, what he has specifically done, other than have a poor start this season, to warrant these comments?

He has spent money extremely poorly, he hasn't settled on players or a system that have worked since Suarez left over a season ago (despite trying two or three unsuccessfully), and he generally says exactly the same thing in every press conference, regardless of if they've won a game or been completely outplayed ('character', 'delighted', 'outstanding'). That whole 'three envelopes' thing was completely ludicrous too.

Suarez made him look good; he has very little to offer on his own.

What's your guys opinion on double defences, should you always play both?

    1. Hanked
      • 13 Years
      10 years, 4 months ago

Would reason that doubling up is only worth while if you are going to play both then they have a favourable fixture. Otherwise it's just an unexecuted plan.

      1. Wardinator

If you double up on defence then you play both or neither, otherwise there's no point

not necessarily. i have double manc - playing both every week. but double wba would be depending on fixture. and of course other defenders

    1 FT, 3.0 ITB

    McCarthy
    Kolarov Williams Azpi
    Sánchez(vc) Yaya Mahrez Payet
    Pellè Wilson Agüero(c)

    Butland Westwood Huth Oxford

    1) Which transfer to make:
    a) Willams -> Evans
    b) Willams -> Dawson

    2) Play McCarthy or Butland

    3) Anyone suggest a plan for getting Pedro/Hazard in for Chelsea's run of fixtures? Dropping Sanche is the obvious route but I want to give him another go against Leicester.

    Appreciate your feedback fellas.
