A Yohan Cabaye penalty hands Palace the points away to Watford. Alex McCarthy is dropped as the Eagles register their first clean sheet of the season, whilst the Hornets defence is finally breached at Vicarage Road.

Cabaye Wins it for Palace

The Eagles edged past Watford courtesy of Yohan Cabaye’s 71st minute spot-kick – the Frenchman’s second goal this term. A permanent assignment to penalty duty would certainly add another string to the summer signing’s bow and augment his appeal at the 6.4 mark, with Alan Pardew confirming post-match that Cabaye is the number one taker.

Wilfried Zaha bagged the assist for Cabaye’s strike after being felled in the box by Watford’s Allan Nyom. The former Manchester United recruit emerged from the bench just after the hour mark and proved to be the game changer in an otherwise tepid affair –strengthening his case to start next time out after he was dropped to the bench for the first time this term, with Pardew criticising his display away to Spurs in the previous Gameweek.

Palace’s attacking contingent as a whole deserve scrutiny ahead of a strong trio of fixtures (WBA, WHU, lei). The likes of Cabaye, Sako (5.6), Jason Puncheon (5.9) and Yannick Bolasie (6.2) all harbour the potential to be profitable pick-ups in the mid-priced bracket over that stretch. The fact that the London outfit sit sixth in the league despite already facing Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester City underlines their impressive form this campaign.

McCarthy Benched for Shut Out

The Eagles’ first clean sheet of the season coincided with Pardew’s decision to drop Alex McCarthy to the bench for the first time this term. Wayne Hennessey – at just 3.9 in FPL – got the nod ahead of the former QPR keeper, and with Pardew admitting on Friday that Julian Speroni still needs a few Under 21 matches to build up his fitness, it seems the Argentine is not quite ready to return from a hand injury quite yet. Sitting in over 13% of FPL teams, the budget-friendly McCarthy is the third most popular stopper in the game but his owners will need to make other plans if he misses out again.

Although Pardew will be delighted that the Eagles have triumphed in nine of their 12 road ties under his stewardship, the clean sheet against Watford was just their second in 21 matches. West Bromwich Albion’s visit to Selhurst Park next Gameweek could engender back-to-back shut-outs – given that no side has netted fewer goals (four) than the Baggies this term – but subsequent match-ups against the league’s joint top scorers (West Ham and Leicester) are less promising in that regard.

Watford Run Halted

The Hornets failed to make it three wins on the trot but will be encouraged by another relatively solid defensive display – Cabaye’s disputed spot-kick is the first time they have conceded at Vicarage Road in four matches this season. Only three teams have conceded fewer goals than Quique Sanchez Flores’ men (six), illustrating the budget potential of their rearguard assets ahead of a decent quintet of fixtures (bou, ARS, sto, WHU, lei). Although right-back Allan Nyom leads the way amongst Watford defenders for points (26), Heurelho Gomes has racked up 34 points and may appeal to those in need of a new keeper.

Yesterday’s loss was the fourth time in six matches that Watford failed to find the back of the net. Despite that, Odion Ighalo (21) and Troy Deeney (20) both rank in the top seven among forwards for attempts in the first seven Gameweeks. The former – who’s valued at 5.1 and was drafted in by over 150,000 FPL managers last week – boasts three goals in as many starts but was unable to test the keeper with a trio of wayward shots against Palace. With a visit to a Bournemouth side that have shipped 11 goals this season next on the agenda, Ighalo may yet appeal to those looking for a cut-price alternative to the Cherries’ Callum Wilson.

Looking to oust Gomis this week.

    Options are:

    A) Sakho

    B) Igalho

    C) Vardy

    D) A.N. Other priced at 8.1 or under

Worth noting that I already have Cresswell & Payet and Huth & Mahrez, so if it's A or C, I'm at my WHU or LEI limit.

    Cheers.

    Anyone watched Swansea game?
How did Ayew play, still worth keeping with good fixtures?

It's basically Ayew vs Vardy for me.
Ayew has 3/4 home, Vardy 3/4 away.

      Vardy >>> Ayew.
Ayew might get benched next GW for me.
OTOH Ayew might drop in price now, and a lot of dudes will regret selling, with his goal + assist + 3bap coming up

Wilson, Gomez, McCarthy and Shaqiri. But have a decent side out this week playing 4-4-2. If I get no other injuries I will save as I really want 2 FT over the international break. Can see my team value dropping at least 0.5, maybe even 1 mil over this period tho.

To WC or not to WC, sitting at 800,000th in the world and just not happy with my team:

    Ruddy - Butland
    Evans - Azpi - Gomez - Francis - Huth
    Hazard - Mahrez - Sterling - Ozil - Anya
    Aguero - Martial - Wilson

This is my first WC draft:

    Myhill - Krul
    Evans - Cedric - Nyom - Reid - Francis
De Bruyne - Mahrez - Sanchez - Payet - Howson
    Aguero - Sakho - Vardy

Yes or No to the WC? Otherwise any suggestions for transfers? Thanks 🙂

Front line at the moment is -

    Sanchez - Walcott - Payet - Mahrez - Hoolahan
    Aguero - Gomis - (Wilson)

Should I ship out Wilson to Sakho for a hit, or just bench him and play 3-5-2? West Ham play sun,cpl and then CHE in the next 3 weeks.

No, it can be equally useful when your defenders have shocking fixtures and you have a benching headache up top. My defenders this week got 1,1,1, 0 and 0 from terrible fixtures.

Well Deeney really needs to go. That's one transfer. Shaqiri was a failed punt, so he may have to go regardless of injury news. That's two. And then there's also Yaya. Really hoping he's fine for the weekend. Looks like our Sanchez (c) really kickstarted our seasons! Good luck for the weekend 🙂

Vardy's lack of bonus points. He's scored in 5 matches but only got bonus points in 2 of them. Anyone know why this is? (aside from the obvious reason of Mahrez hogging them)

In Leicester's 7 matches this season, there have been 29 goals scored. That's an average of more than 4 goals a game so bonus points have been spread out a lot. Also, midfielders' play is more rewarded in the BPS system due to dribbles and crosses etc, so when a midfielder scores he's generally more likely than Vardy to get bonus points unless he gets a brace.

Strikers don't seem to be getting as many BAPS in general this season.

Depends on his performances over the next couple of weeks

I think he will actually. I'd be surprised if Speroni didn't come straight back as no.1 given the amount of fitness updates coming out of the club.

Best to wait & see then but with Speroni looming in the background probably best looking elsewhere. Think I can live Butlands next four fixtures.

Just wondering what the chances are of Gomez not double dropping this week? Looks like most people are in the same boat as me- other priorities for their FT and getting in a cheap defender not worth a hit...

    1. President John F. Keninnsie

Very, very, very unlikely that he drops twice.

Cheers, good to hear. I could get Bertie next week if he doesn't double drop. Otherwise I'm looking at the likes of Moreno, Ben Davies etc- much less enticing and potential selection headaches.

In the same boat, already paying for not shipping Wilson last night. Gomez dropping twice would be too much. May need to find a replacement that will start this weekend with a good fixture if a hit is to be taken.

Both similar- good scoring options when fit with good fixtures. I've got Diouf but Sakho edges it for now, because Diouf's starting spot isn't completely guaranteed at the moment.

    Aguero l Sturridge l Vardy

Personally wouldnt go for Lloris, two 4.5's is the way to go I think. Myhill / Butland looks exceptional value atm.

    Butland
    Kolarov Francis Richards
    Sanchez Yaya* Mahrez Payet
    Aguero Vardy Diouf
    Schmeichel Dawson Westwood Gomez
    0ft. 3,1m itb.
Could I survive this week without a hit? If Yaya likely not playing(or not starting?)
    A) Just count on Dawson for his usual cs.
    B) Yaya->KDB for a hit

4.3 to spend on a Targett replacement... who of this sorry lot is the most nailed on?

    A. Wollscheid (played in their first league win against BOU... able to keep his place?)

    B. Kelly (CPL smashing it, but have a few injuries in defence)

    C. Distin (Praised by Howe but How long will Elphick be out for?)

or just get D. O'Shea and confine him to sub 3 at all times. Maybe Sunderland will get their act together and he'll be a decent shout at a budget price?
