A Yohan Cabaye penalty hands Palace the points away to Watford. Alex McCarthy is dropped as the Eagles register their first clean sheet of the season, whilst the Hornets defence is finally breached at Vicarage Road.

Cabaye Wins it for Palace

The Eagles edged past Watford courtesy of Yohan Cabaye’s 71st minute spot-kick – the Frenchman’s second goal this term. A permanent assignment to penalty duty would certainly add another string to the summer signing’s bow and augment his appeal at the 6.4 mark, with Alan Pardew confirming post-match that Cabaye is the number one taker.

Wilfried Zaha bagged the assist for Cabaye’s strike after being felled in the box by Watford’s Allan Nyom. The former Manchester United recruit emerged from the bench just after the hour mark and proved to be the game changer in an otherwise tepid affair –strengthening his case to start next time out after he was dropped to the bench for the first time this term, with Pardew criticising his display away to Spurs in the previous Gameweek.

Palace’s attacking contingent as a whole deserve scrutiny ahead of a strong trio of fixtures (WBA, WHU, lei). The likes of Cabaye, Sako (5.6), Jason Puncheon (5.9) and Yannick Bolasie (6.2) all harbour the potential to be profitable pick-ups in the mid-priced bracket over that stretch. The fact that the London outfit sit sixth in the league despite already facing Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester City underlines their impressive form this campaign.

McCarthy Benched for Shut Out

The Eagles’ first clean sheet of the season coincided with Pardew’s decision to drop Alex McCarthy to the bench for the first time this term. Wayne Hennessey – at just 3.9 in FPL – got the nod ahead of the former QPR keeper, and with Pardew admitting on Friday that Julian Speroni still needs a few Under 21 matches to build up his fitness, it seems the Argentine is not quite ready to return from a hand injury quite yet. Sitting in over 13% of FPL teams, the budget-friendly McCarthy is the third most popular stopper in the game but his owners will need to make other plans if he misses out again.

Although Pardew will be delighted that the Eagles have triumphed in nine of their 12 road ties under his stewardship, the clean sheet against Watford was just their second in 21 matches. West Bromwich Albion’s visit to Selhurst Park next Gameweek could engender back-to-back shut-outs – given that no side has netted fewer goals (four) than the Baggies this term – but subsequent match-ups against the league’s joint top scorers (West Ham and Leicester) are less promising in that regard.

Watford Run Halted

The Hornets failed to make it three wins on the trot but will be encouraged by another relatively solid defensive display – Cabaye’s disputed spot-kick is the first time they have conceded at Vicarage Road in four matches this season. Only three teams have conceded fewer goals than Quique Sanchez Flores’ men (six), illustrating the budget potential of their rearguard assets ahead of a decent quintet of fixtures (bou, ARS, sto, WHU, lei). Although right-back Allan Nyom leads the way amongst Watford defenders for points (26), Heurelho Gomes has racked up 34 points and may appeal to those in need of a new keeper.

Yesterday’s loss was the fourth time in six matches that Watford failed to find the back of the net. Despite that, Odion Ighalo (21) and Troy Deeney (20) both rank in the top seven among forwards for attempts in the first seven Gameweeks. The former – who’s valued at 5.1 and was drafted in by over 150,000 FPL managers last week – boasts three goals in as many starts but was unable to test the keeper with a trio of wayward shots against Palace. With a visit to a Bournemouth side that have shipped 11 goals this season next on the agenda, Ighalo may yet appeal to those looking for a cut-price alternative to the Cherries’ Callum Wilson.

When is Wilson likely to drop? Tempted to do Wilson > Jerome now and use the cash to upgrade a mid.

    Alright lads, team is:

    Butland, McCarthy
    Kolarov, Dawson, Gomez, Nyom, Francis
    Sanchez, KDB, Pedro, Shaqiri, Mahrez
    Aguero, Igahlo, 4.5

    1 FT, 1,3 ITB

Shaqiri to Payet the best move? Eriksen also looks tempting at 8.3.

    Lloris l Hennessey

    Aguero l Sturridge l Vardy

      Bertrand a good shout
Good defence, although Myhill & Dier instead of Lloris & Dawson will save you 0.7 funds, plus Dier is a better attacking threat than Dawson

Not keen on Lloris, what's the thinking there? I'd look at the Watford keeper and another cheapie to rotate. Hennessey is durt cheap, but I don't think he's expected to keep the spot over Speroni.

I have 4.8m to spend on a defender (upgrading Oxford). Looking at the following options (already have Francis).

    A) Martin
    B) Prodl
    C) Souré
    D) Hutton
    E) Evans (would be doubling up on WBA with Myhill)

Yaya to KDB for a hit?

I know I should have a workover on my defence, with Gomez og Jenkinson not pulling their weight (although Jenkinson finally managed to get into positive numbers for the season overall this weekend), but it is just so much more exciting to tinker with the front 8....

      Very good.

Not concern with fixtures of United, but Chelsea have very good fixtures.

The original plan was Sanchez --> Hazard but not sure if I should sell a player who just scored as hatty

Martial -> Vardy for FT? Was on WC last week so got Martial in for Sunderland and prices rises. Really impressed with Vardy. Other strikers are Kun and Ighalo.

      utter madness

united play well against the top teams and have scored 12 in 4. Arsenal cannot defend the counter which is exactly what united will play on sunday. Arsenal away is a much better fixture for martial than sunderland at home.

      Unnecessary, IMO.

Injuries are increasing. I'd save it for handling the unexpected issues.

In a draft league and looking to ship out either Wilson or Gomis, I've also got Aguero. The others in the DL have Vardy Sakho Martial Berahino Son & Lukaku. Any suggestions?

I had 8m in the bank following costa gate so the only positive from this horror show of a week (21 poitns with keeper to play, my worst ever FPL score) is I've done Wilson and Shaqiri for Martial and Sanchez, pre price rises as well.

Come on Utd/Arsenal - serve up a goal feast...

Has anyone taken a hit to bring in someone that you plan to bench for that week? Did it pay off?

No, but I'm really considering it. Itchy trigger finger on Ayew after 3 blanks

Come again? Take a hit only to bench the player? Why would you do that unless you are crazy focused on price changes or something?

if I wanted to bring in a big hitter mid and the best way to do that would be Ighalo who I wouldn't want to play this week

Ighalo would be the enabler for the big hitter transfer. If the big hitter transfer is worth a 4 point hit, then there is nothing wrong in benching the enabler.

Right, in that case I would consider the hit to be for the big hitter you're bringing in, but I see your point as it is basically the same thing.

In that case, yes I have done that a couple of times, and it has paid off some times and other times, not so much. Are you looking at Sanchez/KDB /Hazard in for Ayew? With City's next two fixtures in mind, I would consider a hit to bring in KDB at least.

After a bad week dropping to 324k and with a poor defence plus injuries I'm seriously considering deploying my wild card...

    Current team is:

    Krul / Hennesey
    Francis / Huth / Gomez / Baker / Kolarov
    Pedro / Yaya / Payet / Mahrez / Mane
    Aguero / Defoe / Martial

Can this be fixed with a transfer or two, or is the WC essential now?

Defoe and one of Gomez/Huth out and team is not in bad shape.

Been reading through replies to similar queries of mine and thinking Gomez (at least Huth plays!) to Dawson or similar and Defoe to someone like Vardy or Sakho

So is Wilson> deeney and Sagna > zab worth it. Thinking of waiting for the champions league game of course. But is it worth it if zab does play now .
