This afternoon we publish our usual pre-Gameweek members article, which focuses on the main captaincy contenders according to the votes cast in our Captain Poll. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Sergio Aguero (53%) reclaims the top spot in our Captain Poll ahead of Manchester City’s home tie against Newcastle United. Although the 13.2-priced forward has recorded five successive league blanks, his owners will be hoping he can kick on after scoring a midweek Champions League winner against Wolfsburg.

The favourable nature of the Sky Blues’ match-up finds Kevin De Bruyne – who’s netted in three of his four starts since arriving from Wolfsburg – sitting in silver-medal position with 10% of the votes. Fit-again David Silva (2%) also makes an appearance, given that the Magpies have conceded twice in five of the first seven Gameweeks.

Dimitri Payet lies in third place for the second successive Gameweek, with 7% of voters liking the Frenchman’s chances away to Sunderland, bearing in mind that the Wearsiders have conceded more goals (16) than any team so far. Payet has delivered attacking returns in all but two of his starts this campaign, underlining the consistency of his output. Diafra Sakho is backed by only 1% of the voters despite notching in three of the four Gameweeks, including strikes on the road against Liverpool and City.

Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy are both backed by 4% of voters as Leicester prepare to lock horns with Norwich at Carrow Road. The former has served up five double-figure hauls already, while the latter netted five goals in his previous four outings. The Canaries have yet to register a single clean sheet in the first seven Gameweeks.

Despite bagging a hat-trick last time out against Leicester, Alexis Sanchez scooped just 3% of the votes as Arsenal entertain a United side that’s conceded just five goals this term.

Notching a brace against Aston Villa in just his second league start since vacating the treatment room, Daniel Sturridge has encouraged 1% of to hand him the armband for the Merseyside derby, given that hosts Everton have yet to record a home clean sheet.

Anthony Martial (1%) – who sat atop the summit last Gameweek – plummets down the rankings by virtue of the Red Devils’ much more challenging match-up. The Gunners have conceded just two goals in their home clashes this term, yet the former Monaco frontman looks in fine fettle and has produced points in all three of his appearances so far.

Do people look at some fixtures for example City vs Newcastle and think yep City will definitely win that game 4-0. Newcastle looked good against Chelsea but people are still putting all their faith in City and Aguero. Watford also looked good before they rolled up to the Etihad yet many were predicting a cricket score. Are there some games we go for just because they're a tasty fixture yet we ignore the form?

I'm just afraid not to (C) Aguero this week. Went with Sakho last couple and it worked out beautifully.

Same here. I really want to captain Payet, but also don't want to drop a few 100,000 ranks if Aguero has a beauty.

That was at home and they have a good record vs Chelsea. Can't see past a comfortable City win, 3-0.

That is true but I'm not so sure the good record matters too much. They won 2-1 last season when they were managed by Pardew who is good at taking points from big games. I'm not so confident in Kolarov to give me points tbh, I have a strange feeling Newcastle will score.

Pretty much yes. This season form is ignored and records which prove what you want them to prove come out.

If City play Aguero, Silva, Sterling and KDB - I see goals aplenty. Kun will either gave a quick impact in a first 20 min onslaught or have limited returns. He's my captain. Happy enough for him to go off aftsr 60 min and let Kol knock in renaining penos.

Sometimes no matter how many world class players are in your side, if you have no form you're going to struggle. City have lost a lot of their form in the past 2 PL games.

I think Citys attack will prosper on Silvas return; he knits it all together. They are only playing Newcastle aka Jan Maat!

I'm not convinced we'll see another 5-0 like last season. After a toughish CL game I am expecting an under-par performance, maybe 2-0.

It's a double edged sword. The harder the fixture the more likely the weak team will pack the box.

Not many easy games produce the expected landslide whilst a mid table battle on the same weekend can produce more goals.

I think this is an excellent point. How often do we see absolute thrashings from the top teams against the lower teams. Often bigger scorelines happen between more evenly matched more attacking sides when one side gets on top.

It depends far more upon the weaker teams attitude and plan than the fancied team. It's not many weeks ago that Newcastle did a good job on Man United at Old Trafford.

This is a tougher one but the point remains.

The best games to bring players in for are the ones against the out of form weaker sides eg. City vs QPR, Newcastle last year.

As you said, in-form weaker sides are going to play well and pack the box so less likely to concede goals.

Just remembered my mate used his bench boost chip last week to get Hart, Kompany, Sinclair & R Martin off his bench for the grand total of 3 points. Sure he beat me in the head to head but what a waste. Really does amuse me he should have seen that not working out.

If enough people are wasting their chips like this those of us who are saving these things could well have massive jumps later in the season on DGW's.

So who's taking advantage of the £50 risk free bet on bet365 (Arsenal v ManU)?

Never miss one. Always lay off the original bet and go for a correct score. Nice earner if you can nail a couple over the course of the season.

    C. Ayew (TOT)
    or
    D. use AOA chip and play them all*

    Butland - Ruddy

    Prodl - Darmian - Kolarov - Dawson - Richards

    Yaya - Payet - Sanchez - Mahrez - Westwood

    Gomis - Vardy - Aguero

2.2 ITB, 1 FT... Yaya > Mata or KDB is what I'm thinking. Any thoughts?

Mata has harder fixtures, but is in a good form. KDB will now go on the right side since Silva is back. Quite hard to chose

Darmian, Kolarov, Nyom / Muniesa*, Gomez*
de Bruyne, Payet, Sanchez, Mahrez / Westwood

    1 FT, 3.7 ITB

After a terrible start of the season, time to wildcard. Please RMT. Concerned to go without any chelsea and without KdB but hey.. can't have everybody.

    Begovic - Butland
    Kolarov - Evans - Dier - Souare - Francis
    Sanchez - Mata - Payet - Mahrez - Westwood
    Aguero - Lukaku - Berainho

    Any blatant mistake in there?

Very similar team to mine and I am also wildcarding this week. Looks good.

Ok here's a question... If I have 3 of my 5 defenders injured... Will my lineup be autocorrected to 2-5-3 or will it stick with 3-4-3 with an injured defender at the back?

cant gt 2-5-3 unless u play AOA

3-4-3 with injured defender .. you might want to consider playing all out attak

No, decent idea, the stats speak for themselves. Fixtures aren't great and slight rotation risk for Walcott would be my only concerns.

Interesting that RMT has Silva comfortably ahead of KDB for the next 5 weeks...

    Think that'll change??

KdB hasn't been around long enough for RMT to know yet. But it will soon enough. Oh yes, it will soon enough. Mmmwwhhaaaaar 👿

Anyone triple captaining Aguero this week? My plan was to save for a DGW but got a sneaky suspicion this is the week..! 😐

      Translation:
I'm impatient and I like to gambooooooool!

Could work out mate but he's form is poor and City's form is poor and it's not a DGW. Silva being back will hopefully turn things around for him.
