The Big Numbers – Defenders – Last Four Gameweeks

Our first members article of the international break arrives this afternoon. Assessing the players by classification across the last four Gameweeks, we look at the impact made by Southampton and City’s new centre-halves, Newcastle’s raiding right-back and Palace’s big Norwegian as Alan Pardew’s defence starts to tighten up.

Currently on a -8 (Had to to get KDB in who I see as essential.

If I were to wildcard I'd only really make two more changes (Francis and Huth to Simpson and Dawson, which would let me stop rotating the terrible Bournemouth and Leicester defenses and just play West Brom instead).

Do I wildcard or just stick with the -8?

WBA might be able to shut down WHM as WHM is pretty unstable. Myhill is just enough if a WBA defender is needed. The save points can help to cover the points for goals conceded which ain't too bad.

UEFA regulations: Article 16 Group formation – final tournament
16.01 By means of a draw, the UEFA administration allocates the 24 teams that qualify
for the final tournament into six groups (A, B, C, D, E, F) of four teams each.
16.02 The six groups are formed as follows:
    Group A Group B Group C Group D Group E Group F
    A1 B1 C1 D1 E1 F1
    A2 B2 C2 D2 E2 F2
    A3 B3 C3 D3 E3 F3
    A4 B4 C4 D4 E4 F4

Basically Sepp phones Michel and says I'll pay you €20m to put England in a Sh1t group. 😉

The Mane man is back in town. Still sitting on a -1 loss, but I see him as one of the more essential midfielders for the season (only Sanchez and De Bruyne higher at the moment).

  7. Southampton defensive options
    Rödallegabomb ᴿᴮ

Southampton defence. Something which we have all enjoyed over the last 2 seasons. With Fonte being the only member of the current back line who was ever present 2 seasons ago, many doubt whether they can pull off similar defensive feats to the ones which we were so familiar with back in yonder year.

I have decided to skim over the numbers and take a look at how they have been performing so far this season as well as the wealth of options their backline has to offer.

The first interesting stat I came across is the number of shots they concede in the box. So far this season, the Saints have conceded a total of 41 goal attempts from within the box, a number fewer than any other team. This averages out to 5.125 per game, which is fewer than the 6.1 which they conceded, on average, last season.

The next interesting stat I stumbled across is the number of chances they have conceded down the right hand side. With only 17 chances conceded (down the right) being fewer than any other team, it looks like Cedric might not be as much as a liability at the back as we had once presumed. They also boast a mere 18 chances conceded through the middle, which is bettered only by Manchester City and Manchester United, who managed 11 and 17 respectively. Similarly, down the left they have conceded 19 chances which is bettered only by Bournemouth (15) and Chelsea (15). Both surprising to see given their current defensive form, I know.

Another quick scout shows they have lost a total of 53 challenges. This is, again, better than any other team, with only Tottenham coming close with 63. This differs greatly from last season when they were ranked 7th for challenges lost. Their average this season, 6.625 trumps that of 8.8 last season, showing they have been significantly more formidable at the back this season.
It is also important to note that Bertrand’s recent return should mean they will solidify even more and I would expect performances to improve greatly once the 4 get more used to playing alongside one another.

So, the stats look great for them right now. It looks to me that clean sheets are imminent, especially given they have a kind run upcoming which has only a few games which could prove to be tough throughout.

    Maarten Stekelenburg (5.0)

The joint cheapest route into their back line and arguably the most nailed on. With it looking like there is slim pickings among the keepers right now, Stekelenburg could prove to be a good, solid option for the mid to long run.

The obvious downfall here is you will miss out on the wealth of points which the rest of their defenders can offer. They all boast excellent attacking potential and BAPS returns, so Stekelenburg might not be the wisest investment of a Southampton slot, more than anything. He doesn't make many saves either, as Southampton don't concede many chances.

    Jose Fonte (5.4)

The BAPS magnet of the Southampton defence. The master of the 0-0s. Fonte has provided countless 9 pointers over the last couple of seasons, coupled with the odd attacking return. After returning 16 and 21 bonus in his last 2 seasons, once would expect him to score similarly again this season.

He has however, only managed 3 BAPS which all came in one game. With a mediocre baseline BAPS score of 15.25 it seems the bonus points system this season might not favour him, so I’d advise looking elsewhere until he can show signs of raking in more bonus.

    Virgil van Dijk (5.5)

The newest addition to the Southampton defence, who has already shown his attacking threat by providing a goal. Last season, in the league, he managed 4 goals and 6 assists in 35 league games, which is mighty impressive for a centre back. You can argue that the league was not to the same standard as the Premier league, however the numbers look promising.

His baseline BAPS score of 14.75 is marginally lower than Fonte’s, but his attacking threat, for me, makes him a better option. He is the most expensive of the Southampton backline however, with cheaper options coming in 0.5m less than the Dutchman. It is worth noting that over his 4 games, he has registered a total of 12 touches in the box, which is bettered only by Richards (17).

    Ryan Bertrand (5.3)

A very popular option last season, managing 140 points. He offers both attacking potential, with 2 goals and 3 assists last season, as well as the chance for BAPS, charting 13 bonus last season.

However, his baseline BAPS this season lie at merge 11 which I expect to improve.
There isn’t much to look into stats wise with Bertrand, since he has only played 2 games after returning to injury. His price looks a bargain right now, lower than the likes of van Dijk and Fonte who all began the season at 5.5. He looks a great differential and a real option over Southampton’s fixtures.

    Cedric Soares (5.0)

The popular option in pre-season given his bargain price of 5.0m. Cedric has shown his fantastic attacking potential over the course of this season, already picking up an assist. He was dubbed a yellow card magnet in pre-season and after picking up one in what was an erratic display GW1, many decided to jump off the wagon.

He has since calmed down and has looked better defensively. The issue lies with him not being totally nailed on. Koeman opted to drop him in favour of Yoshida against United, which could show he might get rotated against the tougher sides. However, Yoshida wasn’t great in that game and they conceded a total of 3 goals.

Cedric also boasts an impressive baseline BAPS score of 17.95, which is reasonably better than any of the other Southampton defensive assets. If he does continue to start regularly, which he probably will in my opinion, he looks the best option. If he is rested against the stronger opposition, it doesn’t matter as he is cheap enough that you won’t mind benching him, which you may have already done given the fixture. It’s tougher benching a 5.5m priced player. He may also have a Demel like tendency to come off early whilst the clean sheet is banked, as he has done on 2 occasions this season.

    Conclusion

Southampton’s defence looks well worth the investment for me. Given most will want Mane and Pelle, it seems there is just one space up for grabs. It’s a tough choice between the lot of them, with all having pros and cons.

I have placed them in order for several attributes based on my own opinions:

    Value:

    Cedric
    Bertrand
    Stekelenburg
    van Dijk
    Fonte

    BAPS Potential:

    Cedric
    van Dijk
    Fonte
    Bertrand
    Stekelenburg

    Attacking Potential:

    van Dijk
    Cedric
    Bertrand
    Fonte
    Stekelenburg
    .

The order of these is based on my own opinions, and they could be swapped around somewhat. I have no doubt that they will change throughout the season.

They all seem like good picks in one way or another. Cedric looks the best bet to me, right now, if he continues to get regular starts. Bertrand looks like a safe pick with good attacking returns and decent BAPS potential. van Dijk is an unexplored resource of points, who could prove to be a great asset this season with his outstanding attacking potential. Fonte is somewhat of a veteran in their backline and offers BAPS potential, although this may have diminished with the new ways of calculating the points (favouring full backs). Stekelenburg seems a bit of a waste of a spot, but is a decent pick for someone needing a long term goalkeeper.

Their main problem with their defence is the defensive midfielder. Schneiderlin was a big loss, and Wanyama is unsettled.

Personally I will be going Bertrand, i'm sure his bps will increase considerably as he gains in match fitness. I just think he'll be a steal at 5.3 with his attacking potential & Southampton's underlying defensive stats so far that you kindly shared (which are impressive!)

Great insight here, I sincerely appreciate it.

I'd like to point out one stat.

17 chances conceded from the right flank is best in the league, however, did you check out crosses conceded from Cedric's right side?

Southampton have conceded 89 crosses from the right flank (4th worst in the league).

Only WAT, LEI and SUN have conceded more.

Managers also have access to the same OPTA stats that members do.
That may or may not be reason Koeman has dropped him several times this season already.

While its great he is bombing forward and supporting the attack, he is also leaving huge holes in doing so. This has been exploited by several teams already.

Interesting find. Strange that he has conceded so few 'chances' but has conceded so many crosses.

Perhaps one of the centre backs is coming to help in the defence? That way the attacker would be forced to cross the ball rather than try to cut inside or take a chances vs 2 players.

I'm assuming most the crosses are not leading to shots on goal.

Tough to explain, but your analysis may be right.

Perhaps it reveals Fonte's ability to win those 50/50 balls.

The rest of the season will be interesting regarding the Premier League. City are title favourites and if Silva, Sterling, KDB and Aguero all click it could be hard to see past them. However both Arsenal and United will be well up there and could challenge. It will be interesting to see what effect Klopp will have on Liverpool, top 4, maybe even title contenders? Can Chelsea turn their season around? Surely not challenge for the title now but surely top 4? And if not what will the fallout be? Can other teams like Southampton or Everton take advantage of the other teams not performing and push for top 4?

Should be an interesting and entertaining season. Seems better than last year where Chelsea just dominated.

Spurs top 4, that would be interesting. They could well achieve that though. Looked impressive against City in the 2nd half.

Spurs for a 4th is possible if Chelsea sank too deep and could only rise as high as up to 5th/6th only. There is an article from the PL website that says no other teams in that measly number of points have managed to reach beyond 5th at the end of the PL season.

Given the PL team performances in the CL, I think it won't do too much. Any player with real aspirations of going far in the competition will probably look at a number of other clubs before they consider a PL team, at least that's the way it is going in my view.

Given the fact that Leicester can score against Arsenal, we know that Leicester will not sit back regardless how difficult the match is.

One note to know is that Ranieri promised to tighten their defence, which he really kept to his promise, but at the expense of Mahrez which was totally unexpected. 🙁

Question... There's an awful lot of love on here for Janmaat, due the his treating attacking stats, albeit he plays for the defensively frail Newcastle.

If we can see beyond Newcastle's potential for clean sheets, why is there not a similar attraction to Moreno who also has some great attacking stats and is cheaper?

If I were Wenger, I'd rest him for both Watford and Bayern. Concede the champions league and focus on the league.

Doesn't it make sense though? Why bother with the champions league when you can focus on the league alone?

Arsenal suffer many injuries during the year and if a reduced playing time helps with that, then I'd take it. Arsenal don't need to worry about the money since they're already sucking their fans dry

Martial has a couple of tricky games then a great run, can't help thinking you'll just want him almost straight back in,
Sterling out for a hit or next transfer.

Does anyone prefer David Silva to KDB?

He's just returned from injury and immediately provided 2 assists. That makes 6 assists in 5 EPL appearances.

In terms of nailed on, recent team form for CSs, it looks like
Alderweireld, Cedric, Dawson, Cathcart(home games only).
Blue moon goal scorers there is a handful of recent hitters, but not on CS teams, less Palace turn their last two games into a run, somehow doubt that.

Top goal scoring teams are MCI,LEI,WHU & Song due back soon
        suggests Vardy+Sakho
Tho Sou are coming back to form so Pelle.

Depends on midfield, as Ive gone double MCI & LEI, + Payet & Pelle
        Preferred that to Mane+Sakho

Ivan has slumped to some of the worst stats in the BPL, awful 1st touch, getting crucified by any winger with pace & an U8s stepover, just f awful.
& on a team that's forgotten what a CS is.

Put Coates+2mn there & then think what you would do is best I think.
Since you have 3 good def there already it could be wait to see no IB injuries and then swap out for a cheapie to upgrade Murray or Westwood week after.

Ayew is still in UK and resting so he will be fine according to the reports.

Sanchez will be fine but Bayern is Arsenal's next match so it depends on whether Wenger plays him (or shorten his time if he starts) against Watford.

I'm pretty sure Sanchez is. He went down once the match was in the bag, waved straight to the bench. Then Wenger did histrionics about how Sanchez "would insist on playing for Chile". Then he shows up mildly injured. He's fine.

Hopefully Sanchez is, although there clearly was a groin issue. I have already transferred him in to replace hazard, so I will look a bit stupid if he is out... and that's what's most important in FFS; how good your transfers look, not final ranking.

I can see it happening. He'll bring Thiago with him as Yaya replacement. Imagine Klopp, LvG, Guardiola, Mourinho, Wenger in the same league. Wow.

Even less chances of success for Wenger.

In the last eight years three different spanish/La Liga teams have reached the CL final in four different seasons(Barca, Real and Atletico) with Barca winning three times(2008/2009, 2010/2011 and 2014/2015), Real winning once(2013/2014) and Atletico not winning anything since they lost to Real. In the same period of time two english/Premier League teams have reached the CL final three times in three different seasons with United winning once(2007/2008) and Chelsea winning once(2011/2012).

Essentially, the ranking of the the last eight years of CL would be this:

            1 - La Liga/Spanish teams
            2- Premier League/English teams
            3- Bundesliga/German teams
            4 - Serie A/Italian teams

With a very small gap between Spanish teams and English teams.

I kept faith in Sanchez and Aguero and it paid off. So I'm sticking with Ivanovic, surely Chelsea will come good.

To be fair, Aguero hasn't looked brilliant before this GW.

With respect Ivan is not Kun or Sanchez regardless of his historical efforts. If it was just his form that was a concern then you might be right. This is an entire championship winning Chelsea squad that had fallen of the cliff. I'd sell him and try and improve else where.

This is right--Arsenal and City always looked effective while Sanchez and Aguero were blanking.

San & Kun had the stats just not the final result, waiting on luck to change was all.
Ivan has been consistently utterly totally woeful.
You'd do better with Coates or Yoshida.

Can anyone name the only Premier League side with more goals from outside the box than within it?
