Harry Kane continues his fine form by bagging the opener in the North London derby. Mesut Ozil earns yet another assist as Arsenal salvage a late point. City are held to a goalless draw by Villa in Remi Garde’s first match in charge, whilst goals from Yannick Bolasie and Scott Dann hand Jurgen Klopp his first loss at the Liverpool helm.

City Toil on their Travels Again

Manchester City were held to a 0-0 stalemate at Villa Park, marking the third road trip in succession that they’ve failed to record a victory. On the flip side, the Sky Blues have now earned clean sheets in all but one of their away matches this campaign, underlining the merits of investing in their rearguard. With Gael Clichy back in the matchday squad and Pablo Zabaleta nearing a return, though, Vincent Kompany could represent their only sure-fire defensive starter beyond the international break. Yesterday’s match means the league leaders have conceded just once in eight outings with the Belgian on board – he’s second only to Riyad Mahrez (7.3 to 7.9) for points per appearance this season.

Wilfried Bony’s 6% ownership were left to bemoan their bad luck when the Ivorian frontman sustained a hamstring complaint and had to be replaced in the 25th minute. Considering he’s a doubt for Man City’s home clash against Liverpool in a fortnight’s time and Manuel Pellegrini is hopeful of a return for Sergio Aguero, Bony owners will be looking for a way out.

Garde Halts Villa’s Losing Streak

Remi Garde commandeered the Villans to a hard-fought draw in his first match at the helm, securing the hosts’ first shut-out since a trip to Bournemouth in Gameweek 1 – much to the ire of the 24,000 managers that shipped out Micah Richards prior to the encounter. Although their next quartet of fixtures (eve, WAT, sou, ARS) mainly looks tough for defensive returns, yesterday’s result will certainly instill plenty of confidence around Villa Park.

Garde enacted six changes from the side that lost to Spurs last time out, benching the likes of Jack Grealish, Leandro Bacuna and Joleon Lescott. In the process of grinding out a result, Villa failed to card a single attempt on target for the first time since August 2014, illuminating their paucity of goal threat. Given that they’ve posted four blanks in their previous seven outings and will be a team in flux until Garde determines his first XI, few will be prepared to jump on board for now.

Gibbs Rescues Gunners

The North London derby ended all-square at the Emirates, with Kieran Gibbs the unlikely scorer of Arsenal’s late leveller. Mesut Ozil delivered the cross for the left-back to prod home, perpetuating his sublime run of form; the German international has notched eight assists in his last six starts, boosting his tally to 10 for the season. Alexis Sanchez looked out of rhythm and registered his third consecutive blank, which might encourage some owners to explore Ozil as a cheaper (8.8 compared to 11.6) source of Gunners coverage. Indeed, in terms of consistency, there’s no question that Ozil is the more reliable – he’s produced points in eight of his 11 league outings, whereas Sanchez has delivered in only four of his 12 appearances.

Arsenal now embark on an excellent quartet of matches (wba, nor, SUN, avl) that includes three trips away from their home turf. Considering Arsene Wenger’s men tallied 11 goals in their last trio of road ties, it’s no surprise to see that Ozil has already earned almost 40,000 new owners since the weekend, more than any midfielder in the FPL game.

Kane Nets Again

Harry Kane capitalised on some slack defending from the Gunners to open the scoring and grab his fifth goal in three league starts. Allied with his strike against Anderlecht in midweek, the Walthamstow-born marksman has clearly begun to find his groove following a lethargic start to the campaign. No forward amassed more shots on target (11) than Kane over the last four Gameweeks, providing further incentive to snap up the 9.3-priced striker ahead of a decent schedule (WHU, CHE, wba, NEW).

Danny Rose showcased his proclivity for attacking returns by recording an assist for the third Gameweek on the trot. Moreover, he now ranks top among defenders for attempts (six) across the last four Gameweeks, which suggests that his first goal of the term could be on the horizon. The presence of three home matches in the next four Gameweeks bodes well for a back line that’s conceded just four goals at White Hart Lane.

Klopp Suffers First Reds Loss

Liverpool fell to a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace. After going behind early on, Philippe Coutinho restored parity for the Reds three minutes before the break, while Adam Lallana grabbed his maiden assist of the season. The former now boasts three goals in two outings and fashioned more attempts (14) than any midfielder over the last four Gameweeks. Beyond a challenging trip to Manchester City next time out, Liverpool’s schedule (SWA, new, WBA, wat, LEI, sun) provides a perfect platform for the 8.2-priced Brazilian to bolster his attacking output.

At the back, though, Liverpool are sweating on the fitness of Mamadou Sakho after the defender was forced off with a knee injury towards the end of the first=half. A possible period on the sidelines could offer the 4.9-priced Dejan Lovren a way back to the starting XI and, along with Alberto Moreno (4.8), offer Fantasy managers options in the sub-5.0 bracket.

Eagles Bask in Away Comforts

A 2-1 victory at Anfield marked Palace’s tenth road win of the calendar year – only Arsenal (11) lay claim to a superior tally. With Dwight Gayle sidelined and Connor Wickham only fit enough for a cameo role, Alan Pardew surprisingly deployed Bakary Sako and Yannick Bolasie in the central forward positions. The latter broke the deadlock after 21 minutes, netting his second goal of the campaign – indeed, Bolasie has now scored two of Palace’s last five goals and with some excellent fixtures (SUN, NEW, eve, SOU, sto, bou) to follow, he’s starting to look like a viable option at just 6.1.

Scott Dann carded his second goal in nine outings to fire the visitors back into the lead at the 82-minute mark. Palace’s defence has tightened up of late – surrendering just five goals in six outings – which draws attention to their rearguard assets. Priced at 5.1, Dann now sits fifth amongst defenders in the FPL game and, given that Joel Ward (4.4) had to settle for a bench role yesterday, the centre-half looks the most likely source of points from Pardew’s improving rearguard.

I think Payet will be fit, so that shouldn't be an issue.

Good XI, weak squad. You may want to consider downgrading KDB instead, so that you have a little bit more money to spend on subs. You'll need them over Christmas.

I know you hate the term essential, thus the inverted commas. 😉 Not necessarily saying he's actually essential, I realise that that's not possible, but he's becoming the best option to have atm. Vardy will slow down with the fixtures, Aguero's not back yet, and Lukaku is another good option, don't see how that makes Kane any less appealing if he's producing at a higher level than them.

I wouldn't say he's a one season wonder mate. Let me change that then, "Top forward option at the moment, imo."

Vardy isn't showing many signs of slowing down, and he could conceivably maintain a goal every two games for the rest of the season, which would be "essential" at about 7m.

Ighalo is INSANELY cheap, and is involved in most of his team's goals, whilst also being pretty predictable in terms of when he gets points.

          Lukaku + Kane are equal.
Lukaku has better fixtures, whilst Kane has slightly better form.
Lukaku is cheaper, and helps to facilitate getting Aguero in for one of the two cheap lads.

Aha I have him in my team, and I agree he's a great option, but he's certainly not nearing "essential" status. I'm WCing in a couple of weeks, and it could easily be Kane who gets the boot to make room for Aguero.

He's a fantastic player to have at the moment, but if someone went with an Aguero/Vardy/Lukaku frontline, the 3 could very easily all outscore Kane. I'd say he's one of a few great FPL attackers at the moment, but you could definitely go without him.

Kane looks like the one I'll have to remove for Aguero too, but I think by the time it gets to that point I won't be able to do so...really think he's going to rack up the points over the coming weeks. Some great fixtures coming up.

Realise my mistake in using the term "essential" when you're around. Got a little fired up there mate 😉 I'll make sure to use an alternative term to express my thoughts on a top option in the future. 😉

Sure, you could go without anyone in the game. You'd really benefit from having someone who's scoring lots of goals at a consistent rate though, and I really think that could be Kane over the coming weeks. Vardy may be cheaper, but I see Kane easily outscoring him over the next few. I rate Kane over Lukaku as well, and the stats seem to support that conclusion, but not saying Lukaku isn't a great option. 🙂

But come on, "3 weeks ago he was a complete write off on here, massively overpriced and a one season wonder, now he's almost "essential"?" You know things change in a short period of time. Just a while ago you didn't think people should get Lukaku, now you're touting him around against my boy 'Arry. 😉 That's how you get ahead in the game though isn't it? See early trends, notice massive changes in form, and hop on the train!

Aha sorry for jumping on the term essential 😉 That last paragraph is exactly my point - things change so quickly in this game that no one can ever be a must have. You're right, a few weeks ago I was very wary of Everton - that's why I went for Pelle and Kane over Lukaku, and there were many on here saying they wouldn't own Kane all season at that price.

In another 3 weeks, we could have a couple of other strikers suddenly bang in form. There are always multiple options - that's what makes the game fun!

Maybe I shouldn't have used the word essential. Seems to have ticked alot of people off. What I was trying to bring up was that he's becoming a very good option to have. Essential's just a quicker way of saying that. 😉

If he can score at the same rate as last year why wouldn't he be a good option? Last year's price shouldn't affect your decisions this year if he can finish off the season amongst the top goalscorers.

Yeah i think that word has a different meaning here than most places. You must be careful 😉

You're right - only this year's price can effect our decision making. Even then, there are several notable cheaper options (Ighalo, Vardy, Lukaku, Pelle, Benteke) who can score at similar rates but allow you to spend the saved cash elsewhere.

He's a fantastic winger, was even better at Sevilla when he'd add goals into the bargain too.

Underrated in England, but appropriately rated in FPL.

lets be fair, hes flattered to deceive for pretty much his whole city career up to now where there is now some level of consistency. he was never as accurate as with his low crosses which seem to be his specialty. they nearly always hit a defender or go too close to the goalie

Watching Barcelona recently, I'm starting to wonder...would I take Ronaldo over any of Barcelona's front 3? I genuinely think Barcelona might have the 3 best attackers on the planet, they are astonishingly good. Neymar's 2nd goal yesterday was extraordinary.

      • 12 Years
      10 years, 1 month ago

No not at all, Ronaldo's the best poacher in the world but the rest of his game is slipping. He's adapting well in that sense to his gradually reducing speed and agility but the Barca front 3 are something else especially let loose together.

Yeah Ronaldo is an excellent goalscorer, but he doesn't have the other abilities that Barcelona's front 3 all have in abundance. The way they work together is fantastic, a lesson to Real Madrid that you CAN have multiple superstars in a team, but they have to be able to work as a unit. Huge credit to Barcelona for finding 2 players who work so well with Messi, and also can win games on their own. They're a terrifying prospect.

          • 12 Years
          10 years, 1 month ago

They had Neymar and Sanchez and Sanchez was really really good there, but Suarez is well, better. It says a lot how Sanchez can steam roller some PL defences but wasn't good enough for Barca.

Yeah it's terrifying that he wouldn't get in the side, don't think even Aguero would. Sanchez is a great player, but he doesn't have the vision and passing ability that Messi, Neymar and Suarez have - I think Ozil would probably work better in that team.

I think he's right, I think Suarez possibly has as well. Ronaldo's stats are amazing, but I haven't seen him have a really good game for a very long time. He pops up with a goal, which is obviously a huge thing, but other than that he's not looking anywhere near the level that the Barcelona players are.

As a Madrid fan, it hurts to say this, but I agree.

Neymar is better than Bale, Suarez is better than Benzema, and Messi is better than Ronaldo.

I think I prefer (Modric - Kroos - James) to (Rakitic - Busquets - Iniesta) though, and, in my opinion, Madrid's defence is far better too. El Classico is going to be very interesting.

Modric is a phenomenal player. There's nothing anyone can do to match Barcelona's front 3, they're probably the 3 best attackers in the world, so even with unlimited money there's no way to find 3 better.

Modric is my favourite Madrid player, the way he plays the game is an absolute joy to watch, never seems to make a mistake.

          Hmm... How about...
          Ronaldo - Ibrahimovic - Lewandowski

They wouldn't play that well together, due to Ronaldo not being able to play with anyone (ever) other than Rooney and Kaka, but some very interesting goals would be scored 😀

          OR.. How about...

          Ighalo - Vardy - Mahrez ?

            • 13 Years

Aha Ighalo - Vardy - Mahrez would be close.

I don't think there's a single attacker that would go into that Barcelona team and be an automatic starter. Lewandowski and Aguero would be close, but are they better than Suarez? I don't think they are.

How is Arnautovic as a differential? Considering him in for Payet

  18. TheMadman
      10 years, 1 month ago

Bit of a long one but I'm thinking of playing my wildcard. My current overall rank is around 28K and I haven't used any chips yet.

      -------------------------------------------------------

      Current team:

      Butland - Gomes
      Dawson - Bellerin - Sagna - Cedric - Rojo
      Mahrez - Payet - Sanchez - KdB - Mata
      Ighalo - Pelle - Vardy

      Bank: 0.7m

      -------------------------------------------------------

      Potential WC team:

      Butland - Hennessey
      Ake - Bellerin - Kompany - Bertrand - Rojo
      Mahrez - Payet - Mane - Ozil - Deulofeu
      Lukaku - Aguero - Vardy

      Bank: 0m

      -------------------------------------------------------

Transfers in: Hennessey, Ake, Kompany, Bertrand, Mane, Ozil, Deulofeu, Lukaku, Aguero

Transfers out: Gomes, Dawson, Sagna, Cedric, Sanchez, KdB, Mata, Ighalo, Pelle

      -------------------------------------------------------

Hennessey has better fixtures than Gomes while Ake has better fixtures than Dawson. Kompany is way more nailed on than Sagna, as is Bertrand in comparison to Cedric, and also has a greater assist potential. Mane essentially plays as a striker, and although Sanchez does as well, I need a way to make some funds for bringing in Aguero. Ozil has been incredibly consistent this season while Mata has not, as has Deulofeu in these past few games. Again I'd have to get rid of KdB to free up funds to bring in Aguero and Lukaku.

Finally I think Aguero and Lukaku will outscore Ighalo and Pelle by a large margin in their next few games (and over the course of the season, barring injuries). Also AFAIK Aguero and Lukaku take penalties while Ighalo and Pelle do not.

Other than that, I have made this team assuming that Bellerin and Payet will be fit for the next GW. If Bellerin isn't fit, I'll get Monreal for the same price. If Payet is out for a while, I might get Wijnaldum or Ayew. I'm covered if Vardy is suspended for next GW because my mids and strikers have good fixtures.

I'd actually keep Mane over those 2.

Willian and Tadic aren't consistent too just like Mane, though I think we can agree that Mane's got more flair than those and will give you more double digit hauls.

The only one I see myself losing Mane for seems to be Mata. He is just everywhere in their attack and I expect United to start scoring again.

Yeah same here. His price going back up allows me to play around with him on the WC

Looking at replacements for Myhill around the 4.6m mark and I can see why people have gone for DDG....fixtures are poor it seems for the other choices

Yeah he might be decent enough actually - Would feel wrong having 4.0/4.0 keepers 🙂

Fixtures don't seem that great for sole playing keeper

I hope he misses between 1 and 3, as I wasn't gonna play him for those weeks anyways.

Hopefully just enough that everyone sells him, but not enough that I have to sell him 😀

Who would you get rid of for Kane?

        Pelle, Martial, Vardy

Not bothered about Kun until Christmas at least
