A Monday afternoon Scribbles brings reports of a return to training for Sergio Aguero. Joey Barton has harsh words for new team mate Adel Taarabt, Harry Redknapp admits he maybe should have started Jermaine Defoe at Newcastle and the PFA offer to intervene in the Luis Suarez-Patrice Evra row:

While the FA are set to investigate Patrice Evra’s claims of racist remarks allegedly made by Luis Suarez on Saturday afternoon, Suarez took to twitter last night to vehemently deny abusing the Frenchman during the 1-1 draw at Anfield. Today saw the PFA offer to mediate between the two, with chief executive Gordon Taylor keen to sort out the ongoing row:

It’s very disappointing to have two of our players from different countries at odds over a very serious issue. Only by having a full inquiry on such matters can we get to the bottom of it and try to make sure that such problems don’t arise again in the future. We need to try to cool down and reflect on what happened and to contact the FA and see what form their inquiry will take. It’s good to get this put behind us as quickly as possible instead of letting these things fester and become blown up again.

Arsene Wenger’s injury problems show no sign of letting up. Aaron Ramsey was ruled out of yesterday’s match against Sunderland due to a hamstring strain, while Kieron Gibbs was subbed off just minutes into the second half. Ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Marseille, the Gunners boss admitted:

Gibbs has an inflammation of his stomach muscles. He has a small chance of playing on Wednesday. Ramsey has a small chance of being in the squad. He had fatigue of his hamstring. I wanted to give him a breather – it would have been a gamble to play him.

With his first start for seven months marked by a goal in the draw against Man United, Steven Gerrard announced his return in typical style. The Liverpool skipper spoke of his satisfaction at being back amongst the starters and looks back to his old self ahead of the weekend home clash with Norwich:

It’s been a frustrating six months watching from the stands. I didn’t realise what I had until it was taken away from me for so long. I’m just delighted to be back, experiencing the emotions of big games again.

Man United have named their squad for this week’s Champions League clash with Romanian side Otelul Galati. Sir Alex Ferguson has left out Rio Ferdinand, Tom Cleverley and Rafael, with Nemanja Vidic back in the reckoning for the first time since the opening day of the season win at West Brom.

Reports today suggest Sergio Aguero trained ahead of the Champions League clash with Villarreal tomorrow evening. Micah Richards is also said to have returned to training- the right-back was subbed off in Saturday’s 4-1 over Aston Villa with a head knock but is expected to make the match, with City desperate for all three points.

Joey Barton has been more than a little candid when discussing Adel Taarabt over the weekend. Though Neil Warnock admitted he sometimes gives the Moroccan preferential treatment, Taarabt was benched on Saturday following his Craven Cottage walkout in Gameweek seven, and Barton didn’t mince his words when discussing the player’s contribution to the QPR team cause and subsequent disappearing act at Fulham:

I came here and was told he was a genius. But I’m yet to see it and I don’t know whether it is because he does not work hard enough, or whether he tends to sulk. This is the top level of world football and if you’re not prepared to work hard you will come up massively short. If I had Adel’s ability, I would not want to be coming up short having not worked hard enough….I don’t know if he got a lot of stick. He deserved some if he didn’t. It would have been nice if he had come in and apologised to the group for doing that, but he didn’t think he needed to. As one of the senior players, maybe he should have.

Harry Redknapp admitted he may have erred when announcing his starting XI for the game at Newcastle yesterday. The Spurs boss fielded Rafael Van der Vaart but despite the Dutchman’s goal, it was his replacement Jermain Defoe who caught his manager’s eye, with a brilliantly taken goal outside the Newcastle box:

It was a great finish. They’ll say I’m a clever manager- if I had been that clever maybe I should have started him. It is difficult, I have him and Rafa. Rafa didn’t look sharp today and looked a bit tired having been away with his country. I decided Jermain might give us a bit of sharpness.

Still on the subject of Spurs, Ledley King is set to be sidelined for “a while“ according to Redknapp, after picking up an abductor strain at Newcastle yesterday. The centre half departed the proceedings just before the half-hour mark and Spurs looked defensively shaky with replacement Sebastien Bassong alongside Younes Kaboul. With Michael Dawson and William Gallas still recovering from Achilles and calf problems respectively, Spurs options in central defence are thin on the ground right now.

Alex McLeish is hoping James Collins will overcome a groin problem ahead of next weekend’s home game with West Brom. The centre-half was an ever-present in the Villa starting XI up until last weekend’s trip to Man City and was sorely missed, with his side’s unbeaten record crumbling in the 4-1 Etihad loss.

After five straight losses, Mick McCarthy hardly has his troubles to seek but this afternoon brought bad news on the injury front for the Wolves boss. Steven Fletcher could be out for a month with a torn calf and McCarthy, having reverted to a 4-5-1 in his absence at West Brom yesterday, admitted his side lack a cutting edge without the Scotsman in the ranks. With Sylvan Ebanks-Blake also currently unavailable, Wolves’ striking options are thin on the ground right now.

Is it too late in the season to absorb a 8pt hit in a league where you are 78pts off the lead

Not at all. I took an 8 point hit this week, then posted the highest score in my league and took 30 points off first place. Just make the transfers count. Admittedly, RVP did pretty much all the work for me.

Nope, but it's easy to get into the habit of taking points hits to get in players that scored well last week - if it's for solid medium-term changes, with players with good fixtures, then that's fine.

Nah, I keep forgetting to bookmark the site so I haven't seen in a few weeks. How high up are you now? Well done to the AB's, if France play like they have done so far this tournament it should be a very convincing win. But they do know how to turn it on against you guys! That Wales France game left me heartbroken, I'm still bloody annoyed & depressed about it. 😡

96th in the picks! 😯 Just trying to pick the last two games: gone 1-12 Wales and 13+ ABs.

Yes, I played my w/c in week 6 and have risen 431k as a result. I've set myself a goal of reaching the top 1k within 8 weeks of the w/c 😕

I was at the Wales game and you can be very proud of your boys. The kiwis are right behind you and there's a lot of anger here too that the game was spoiled in that way. I see Rolland didn't get the final and just wonder if the semi-final had something to do with it?

Jeez, nice one! If you want to win, you're gonna have to go with bold selections though. And with FPL, although top 1k in just a few weeks is pushing it a bit. 😛

Yep, the game was completely ruined with that. I just can't understand why he whipped the red out within seconds, surely such a mammoth of a decision you'd go to your touch judges and say "Guys, I think red card because blah blah blah, any reason for me to not give a red?" and talk it over.

I didn't really see the incident properly at first, then it showed a replay and I thought "Oh shit, yellow card here. 14 men for the next 10 minutes, just hang on for those 10 minutes" then it showed him on the sideline with 'Sent off' and I genuinely had an 'OMG cat' moment where I stared at the TV for about 10 seconds jaw wide open in utter disbelief. The most annoying thing is, even with 14 men for over an hour we still could/should have won it. Urgh, I'll stop now, I could rant all day!

I guess the ref has to protect players' safety too, is the other argument. Imagine if that had been Ritchie McCaw though-mass outrage 😕

Once you life a player off the ground it gets serious.

Amazing how there were more people at the Millenium Stadium than Eden Park!

Yes, Wales could have won it. It reminded me a little of the Springbok game - not quite good enough to get over the game line. Hook had a shocker tbh.

That is exactly one of my arguments, if it was McCaw and not Warburton (with the whole crowd on the ref's back) I highly highly doubt it would've been red. I honestly do (no offense 😉 ). As you say, once a player is lifted, you put the question in the ref's mind so he was stupid there, but there's been other incidents like that in this RWC and no red card. That's my main annoyance, no consistency.

Yeah, Hook didn't have a good game at all, felt a bit sorry for him. He hasn't really played in a few weeks and looked rusty, as did Stephen Jones when he came on. The missed kicks cost us is the brutal fact, not the red card.

You have some real stand outs though: Roberts, Halfpenny and Phillips. All high-quality operators. They were saying in the paper here yesterday, that these players deserve to be in the final. There has been a real lack of quality no 10s in the tournament.

Yes it will be interesting to see how the referee acts when the next spear tackle comes along.

The good thing is that it's a very very young team, so the vast majority of them will be around for the next WC, and should only get better.

I was impressed with what I saw of Cruden yesterday (and the quarter final) though. Must be unreal pressure on him out there, and he handled it very well I thought. Anyway, I'm off Jafa. Catch you tomorrow (or later today for you 😛 ).

He's played well from what I've seen (usually last on MOTD...), hit the woodwork at least once, could have had an assist v Bolton if di Santo could score without the aid of a deflection.

For <5.0, and still with good fixtures, I'd say most people have more important transfers to worry about.

the only midfielders cheaper than moses that have outscored him are dyer, tiote, johnson, derry, allen and reo-coker

the reason people have moses is presumably to have an attacking midfielder that frees up funds elsewhere - of the above 6 only dyer and johnson are viables alternatives imo

The idea is good but the execution is terrible. The worst culprit is the missed shots. -1 per missed shot, fine, but not the -10 or whatever it is now.

Bad K was awarded 1 pt at the weekend for his goal; Terry 3. I was thinking that other scorers affect a defender's bonus pt potential even if they score.

Even so, it pays to invest your money upfront this year.

Want to do Best > Ba logic, Best out of sorts and Ba is nailed on and in form also not much of rotation risk over the next 6 gw - would like Sturridge but cant afford because........

Mata > Gerrard - Mata 25 points from 5 starts and thats just not good enough for a pseudo striker - Gerrard nailed on for weeks and nice fixtures.

    Currently

    Mata Silva Jarvis Sinclair Ramsey

    Rooney Best Suarez

Any thoughts other than the obvious "Bandwagon!!"

Sorry, but I am - there is a page worth of midfielders with returns in excess of Mata at the moment - of those most likely, I think Gerrard is the THE most likely to deliver for the forseeable - could be a season keep.

Dead set on bringing in Gerrard (probably for 3 weeks only) as I am sure Liverpool will do very well over the next 3 and I don't want to break up my forward line for Suarez. The question is, who do I bring him in for?

Nani - MCI, eve, SUN - no other United coverage, price not rising so could get him back easily

Mata - qpr, ARS, bla - have Sturridge, possibly weaker but arguably better fixtures and looks as though he's coming into form

I don't really get the Stevie Me love-in. He's only just back from injury; prior to this he was not the productive scorer he once was and then there's the Adam factor with set plays. I wait a while and see how he really shapes rather than base an opinion on one game. I certainly wouldn't have him ahead of Silva, Mata and Nani.

I agree (ish). Stevie G. was a great player, but he's been out injured for many months, he's slower and he's probably no longer able to make those surging runs from deep. Nevertheless, I would expect a goal and 1 or 2 assists during the next 3 matches ... but he's stil too expensive for me.

Even though VDV is looking good at the minute, i dont think he's worth it, playing in an unfavoured position, aint gonna get penalties every week, and gets brought off every game at 60 minutes, only hopes regularly are free kicks and odd assists to up front players, he'll dry up, he always does imo.

Downgrade enrique to someone cheaper and go gerrard? 🙂

Saying that was 100% safe for Henry though, no game has ever been replayed because of a handball. He would never have said that otherwise.

I think Rooney has a great chance of having his ban reduced to two games.

Never thought id have a team with no united coverage when ive had an all 3 from man u in the past seasons, but once young goes that leaves me with just Jones, who may be on his way out soon also. Getting rooney or aguero back for van persie and someone else though.

However, the top, worth it? Help appreciated 🙂

figured as much, Ican handle the .1, it ain't worth it seeing him rotated/injured. Demba looks certain to rise as well.

4 goals in less than 4 games, cant see him being rotated at least for a while. besides that, at that price you cant go wrong.

Guys would you swap Ward and Adebayor for Kompany and Sturridge? 4 point hit.

I'm not sure I'd be taking Adebayor out for anyone for a 1 game possible advantage with his coming fixtures Ian.

    Hi fellas

Not sure what to do here, looking to make any changes to keep me going for the next 3 GW's. I just used up my transfer now from Dzeko to Adebayor and WC gone.

    Given (Vorm)

    Enrique, Simpson, Kompany (Tierney, Barnett)
    Nani, Silva, Ramires, Ramsey (Dyer)
    Adebayor, Suarez, VP.

Was looking to sell Silva perhaps as I can sell him for what i got him at rather than Nani to bring in Gutierrez, Petrov, Walters, Murphy and strengthen backline with Warnock? Trying to up my team value as its 101.4 now and still gain max points of course during the next 3 weeks.

    Any ideas?

What's up with all the, 'Ryan Taylor could lose his spot' talk? He might be the only person in history that was on every single f&%king free kick and lose his position to guy I've never heard of before this season. Can you tell I'm a bitter Cabaye owner? I've about had it with the Frenchman, can one person avoid the ball more than Arteta or Modric? Yes, this guy.

I think this is a strong team for the upcomming gameweek, what do you think
Perhaps the midfield is a little conflicted, would it be worth to think good things to come of nani and silva against eachother? or gamble with petrov and dyer?

    Krul (Voorm)
    Warnock, JoseEnrqiue, Jones, RTaylor (Shawcross)
    Ramsey,Nani,Silva (Petrov, Dyer)
    Suarez, RVP(C), Adebayor
