Leighton Baines grabs a goal and assist for Everton reserves. Liverpool’s Mamadou Sakho is ruled out for up to eight weeks. Alex Song and Diafra Sakho are close to West Ham returns, whilst Pablo Zabaleta steps up his recovery for City.

Baines Impresses for Toffees Reserves

Stepping up his rehabilitation from an ankle injury, Leighton Baines netted and supplied a free-kick assist during a behind-closed-doors friendly against Preston.

Discussing his rehabilitation with the local press, the left-back admitted he’s looking to step up his match sharpness with more minutes:

“Ten days ago I was floating on the edge of training, not really able to get involved, but now I’m right in it and have to deal with a lot of those things, even though it’s a little bit more controlled in training. So it’s about now going into these games and getting back to being at that point where I am able to return.”

The Scout Says: Everton failed to secure a single clean sheet in their last six fixtures, but the Toffees’ excellent upcoming run of seven match-ups (AVL, bou, CRY, nor, LEI, new, STO) keeps us interested in their defensive assets. Seamus Coleman (8.7% ownership) is the most popular choice at present, yet he’s not been the marauding powerhouse we’re accustomed to seeing, having amassed just seven attempts and one assist in nine outings. Although Baines is no longer the preferred penalty taker at Goodison Park, he’s certain to take his fair share of free-kicks upon his return, in light of the fact that Ross Barkley has failed to convert any of his 12 set-piece attempts – no player has tallied more. Moreover, the English left-back has dropped to 6.1 due to his injury layoff, rendering him an intriguing differential if he can match his attacking output from the previous campaign (two goals and nine assists).

Sakho Ruled out for Reds

Scans revealed that Mamadou Sakho sustained knee ligament damage during Liverpool’s home tie against Crystal Palace and will be out of action for six to eight weeks.

The Scout Says: Sakho’s period of convalescence will likely open the door for Dejan Lovren to establish himself as a regular fixture in the Red’s defence – he started the opening five match-ups but lost his place when Sakho recovered from a pre-season complaint. Valued at 4.9, Lovren – who failed to deliver any attacking returns across 2,037 minutes last season – is unlikely to attract any interest on the Fantasy market as the 4.8-priced Alberto Moreno offers greater attacking potential from the left-back berth. Over the last four Gameweeks, Moreno charts joint-top among defenders for attempts (six) and joint-third for key passes (six), underlining his merits ahead of a decent run of fixtures once next week’s trip to City is out of the way (SWA, new, WBA, wat, LEI, sun).

Song and Sakho Close to Hammers Comebacks

Alex Song and Diafra Sakho could both be back in the frame for the Hammers’ trip to Tottenham Hotspur next Gameweek. The former clocked up 70 minutes in a friendly on Wednesday, whilst Sakho has been out running on the pitch, with the club “very confident” he will make the White Hart Lane encounter.

The Scout Says: With Dimitri Payet out of the picture, it will be interesting to observe how Slaven Bilic reshuffles his troops to compensate for the Frenchman’s absence. One train of thought suggests that Manuel Lanzini will begin to operate from the number ten berth, freeing up a wide slot for the likes of Mauro Zarate or Sakho, with Andy Carroll retaining his lone-striker role. Considering that Carroll notched just two attempts (zero on target) across his last two starts, though, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the big Geordie dropped out for the Spurs clash, enabling Sakho to lead the line, with Zarate and Victor Moses out wide. With Song’s return offering further options in central midfield, it’s likely that Lanzini– who’s bagged two goals and assists in five outings – will serve as the only viable source of Irons attacking coverage while their line-up is in flux.

Mixed Injury News for City

Wilfried Bony has been ruled out of Ivory Coast’s back-to-back World Cup qualifiers against Liberia, having sustained a hamstring injury at Aston Villa last Gameweek. Conversely, Pablo Zabaleta is progressing well in his rehabilitation and could be back in contention for Liverpool’s trip to the Etihad:

“I am doing OK, progressing well and trying to be fit for the visit of Liverpool after the international break. We’ll see how it goes in the next week or so. At the moment, the plan is to re-join the rest of the team next Monday so hopefully, everything will go well and I’ll be available for our next game.”

The Scout Says: Although back-up striker Kelechi Iheanacho has shown glimpses of his potential – netting two goals in just 192 minutes across all competitions – Manuel Pellegrini will be desperate to nurse one of his premier forwards back to health ahead of a challenging pair of home match-ups (LIV, SOU). In the event that Bony is unavailable for selection beyond the international break, Pellegrini would be tempted to fast-track Sergio Aguero – who’s hoping to train this week – into a return. Alternatively, both Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling have been utilised up top in recent outings and could offer another option if the Chilean chooses to take no risks. At the back, Zabaleta’s return to the matchday squad increases Bacary Sagna’s risk of rotation. Ally this with the fact that Gael Clichy is pushing Aleksandar Kolarov for starts and Vincent Kompany is struggling to fully shake off a calf injury, and Nicolas Otamendi (6.5) is shaping up to be an attractive route into Man City’s defence. The former Valencia centre-back has already registered more shots inside the box (seven) than Kolarov and claimed eight bonus points in his previous trio of starts.

Van Aanholt Handed Reserves Outing

Patrick van Aanholt grabbed an assist (converted penalty) and saw his goal disallowed for offside as Sunderland’s U21 outfit recorded a 2-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao.

The Scout Says: The Dutchman has played just one of Sam Allardyce’s four matches in charge – the 6-2 defeat at Everton in Gameweek 11, where he produced an assist. Last night’s outing perhaps underlines his fall from grace this season after chalking up an impressive five assists in the campaign gone by. Although Van Aanholt has fashioned attempts (one every 152 minutes) and key passes (126 minutes) at a greater frequency that any other Black Cats defender, he seems to have slipped down the pecking order under Big Sam, with Billy Jones and DeAndre Yedlin (both 4.4) in the driving seat at full-back. Given that the Black Cats have managed a single shut-out this season (at home to a 10-man Newcastle United side) and rank top for goals conceded (26), there’s next-to-no interest in Allardyce’s backline charges right now ahead of a very unforgiving schedule (cry, STO, ars, WAT, che, mci, LIV).

Elliot Withdraws from Ireland Duties

By virtue of an ongoing thigh injury, Newcastle’s Rob Elliot will not team up with Ireland for their Euro 2016 play-off against Bosnia and Herzegovina – as confirmed by Martin O’Neill. In more positive news on the goalkeeping front, the Magpies’ Karl Darlow returned to training this week so should be fit for Leicester City’s visit next Gameweek:

The Scout Says: Priced at a mere 4.0 in FPL, Elliot has helped the Magpies record two successive clean sheets in the league, though it’s worth noting that their opponents for those fixtures – Bournemouth and Stoke City – rank bottom (four) and third-bottom (five) for goals scored over the last six Gameweeks. Consequently, it’s hard to get excited about the Newcastle defence as they prepare to face off against the likes of Leicester, Crystal Palace and Tottenham in their next quartet of match-ups. Nonetheless, Daryl Janmaat remains the prime pick for those managers willing to back the Tynesiders’ rearguard, given that he places joint-third among defenders for key passes (six) over the last four Gameweeks. With question marks over Elliot’s fitness failing to go away, then, those eyeing up a cut-price stopper could turn to Palace’s Wayne Hennessey, who has earned three clean sheets in six appearances ahead of an eye-catching run of matches.

Thoughts on Payet to Will i an and Mane to Ozil.

Rest of mid is Mahrez, Sanchez, KDB. Would do either KDB or Sanchez to Lanzini next week to allow Pelle to Aguero.

Will i an has some great fixtures.

The other plan was to sell payet for ozil and mahrez to alli, allowing next week mane to lanzini and pelle to aguero

Save if you want him GW14. Lukaku is a great pick but do you want to transfer out Pelle when he's got a plum home fixture next?

I'd probably save regardless to be honest. Gives you extra chance to see how Kun looks

          1. Johnny98
            • 11 Years
            10 years, 3 months ago

Might be a good fixture on paper, but Stoke have been impressive defensively and rarely concede chances in the box which is the main place Pelle likes to score. He has also struggled with shots on target for the past few games and think he's slightly unpredictable.

I just think at this stage we can count on Lukaku to score against the weaker sides than Pelle to hit a decent run of form. Its not an urgent transfer, but one I think I have the luxury of being able to make, bar injuries. Thanks for your advice though, I still may save it in the end.

          A) option is sideways both can get returns
          B) kolorav might still keep his place so wait on it.
          C) There isn't a move to do unless you want kun you might have to do a major downgrade from your 4 MIDs.

            • 11 Years
            10 years, 3 months ago

Now that's a much better reply, thanks Mr Grv 🙂

Yes A is sideways, but Lukaku has good fixtures and Pelle is slightly inconsistent with diminishing stats.

Kolarov probably will keep his place, but Smalling does offer security and clean sheet/BPs potential for a few more games.

I think I could also bring in someone for McCarthy, but that's not massively urgent. Kun can wait for now.

The trouble is that Pelle has STO and AST in the next 3, but it's hard to ignore Lukaku. I have him and Lukaku in a 3-5-2.

I would worry about Kolarov's gametime. I'm a natural panicker about rotation, so I took Kolarov out a couple of weeks ago.

If i was you, I would do Kolarov to Smalling this week, then Pelle to Lukaku next week when its mci vs bou fixtures wise.

Currently wildcarding, i came up with this setup. Anyone care to RMT?

    De Gea - Hennesey
    Bellerin - Rose - Moreno - Dann - Ake
    Sanchez - Ozil - Coutinho - Lanzini - Lingard
    Lukaku - Kane - Vardy

    * $$$ itb so Lukaku/Kane can become Aguero, when the time is right.

    - not sure about Coutinho and no Mahrez cause i'm chasing and prepared to risk going without him

I'm lining up an almost identical defence for next weeks WC, but with a CPL fullback to save cash. Not sure which one I'd go for this week though.

The trouble is that with Moreno and Rose so cheap, its actually quite hard to justify spending less at the back. Moreno to Micah Richards? Saves 0.3, whoop-dee-doo!

    Kolarov Moreno Jones Cresswell Francis
    KDB Payet Mahrez Sanchez Westwood
    Vardy Ighalo Pelle

    £4.3 & 1FT

    I'm thinking Payet>Barkely tbh

Yeah payet has to go with Westwood as 5th. Barkley is a decent shout, he can be left there for several weeks with those fixtures as well.
      Aguero plans?

Sensible. I can either do Payet -> Sterling before the drop, or wait till end of next week and see what news we have on Silva before making the decision.

If Silva was back then which one?

I wont have much time to tinker next week so wanting to sort soon on the basis no injuries in international and then address that if need to, this is what i'm thinking.

      Guzan
Van Dijk / Kolarov / Francis
Wijnaldum / Sanchez / De Bruyne / Mahrez / Tadic
      Pelle (C) / Vardy

Bench: Myhill / Benteke / Skrtel / Cathcart

      2 ITB and 1FT
If no injuries would you save the FT and play like the above? Transfer in a decent keeper? Bench someone different? Madness captain choice?

      Thanks in advance guys.
      PS. I HATE INTERNATIONAL BREAK

I think Kolarov--->Arsenal/United defender would be profitable over the short and long term.

I'm not talking about never getting him back, just merely talking about the next 1 or 2 GWs is what I mean... He's not worth taking hits for that's for sure.

There's currently too many other great options up front. But if my thoughts are correct, Vardy will blow out of steam when their hard run of fixtures hits them... opening the door for Kun

      Bellerin Kolarov Rojo Whittaker Oxford
      Sanchez KDB Ozil Mane Mahrez
      Vardy Pelle Ighalo

      Anything worth a hit?

Mane and Pelle will become Lanzini and Aguero after this week.

Is Whittaker to Moreno for a hit a bit daft? I will be making the move anyway as cover for Kolarov and both prices will probably change in the near future.

Very strong fixtures, and with a bit of form i'd be surprised if he was benched any time soon. So we need to decide if 60-80 mins v Villa, Bournemouth, Noriwch et al is worth it....

Apart from Mahrez, who I assume you already have, there isn't much in that price change. Cabaye is probably a better choice from Palace and I may say Lamela because he plays much more advanced and in playing with more superiors players in Son, Eriksen and Kane.

Although Cabaye is on 4 yellow cards, which is why i believe Bolasie is being promoted.

You assume correctly. The challenge I have is a player in this bracket, rotating with Ighalo (I know many hate front-8 rotation), allows me to buy Aguero next week without downgrading Kolarov, which I don't want to do at the moment.

As I write that, I realise that in the near future I imagine I will be wanting to drop Kolarov, when the rotation begins, so maybe this purchase can be a short-term one that I can upgrade when that happens.

A friend of mine is a Sunderland fan, and just reminded me that Bolasie scored a hat trick against them last time they played...

Which one of your mids are you downgrading to get Deulofeu/Bolasie?

Payet. I made the fatal, school-boy error, of impetuously losing Mane rather than Payet to avoid the Ozil price rise (convinced Payet would be fine in a few 2-3 weeks, and happy to keep him benched short-term).

I have a second FT. I'd have just done Payet > Ozil if I'd have waited another day, and I'd have held Mane, but not sure about going back that way now.

Very schoolboy especially you already knew Payet was injured!

Why don't you just downgrade him to bench fodder which will give you the flexibility of upgrading Ighalo of you want to.

That is another option I'm considering Pochecinno.

Although I'm not really keen to be playing Ighalo against Utd.

                      Thanks for taking the time!

The choices at 6.5M are pretty uninspiring I grant you. Who would you be looking at then?

Fair shout. But he does seem a bigger rotation risk than Deulofeu at the moment

Who actually has the b*lls not to transfer in Aguero from GW 14 onwards? I dont...

Last time i read a post abt aguero not being essential (Doosra) we all know what happened...

Not sure I do but we'll see. I really want Kane and him, Lukaku and Aguero is tough without taking lots of hits.

-8 if I do it over 2 weeks....Means I still have goalkeepers I need to worry about and no City midfielder...

that's why i just can't get myself to invest 6.5 in a defender like smalling - i m really cheap once it comes to defence...
Bolassie is a nice punt for next 2 gw - i considered him

structured all my transfers to bring him in for GW 14 - Can already sense the hamstring going in GW15 on a cold rainy night in stoke...

I think I might wait until around GW18 or so to get himin.

That's different, he wasn't just coming back from injury then...especially a reoccurring one that would ensure Pellegrini eases him in. Fixtures aren't as good too.

Kun is fixture proof - As an arsenal fan it pains me to say it but he's by far the best ST in epl head and shoulders above the rest
