With Crystal Palace’s upcoming schedule so favourable, Scott Dann is the big riser among the defenders this week after netting the Gameweek 12 winner at Anfield. Nicolas Otamendi takes over as our preferred Man City defender, with Aleksandar Kolarov now a rotation risk due to the return of Gael Clichy and Vincent Kompany suffering with an ongoing calf complaint.

GOALKEEPERS

On the back of four straight clean sheets, Man United’s David de Gea still tops the goalkeeper rankings. The Spaniard’s price has risen to 5.6 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), with over 11,000 Fantasy managers drafting him in this week, and given the upcoming fixtures (wat, lei, WHM, bou, NOR, sto), there is clearly plenty in his favour.

With Crystal Palace’s upcoming schedule over the next six Gameweeks (SUN, NEW, eve, SOT, sto, bou) deemed the most favourable according to our Season Ticker, Wayne Hennessey is the big riser among the goalkeepers in our latest update. The Wales international only sets us back 4.0 in FPL, and with three clean sheets from his last six outings, looks an outstanding budget option between the sticks.

We’re maintaining Arsenal’s Petr Cech towards the upper end of our ladder with the Gunners next four fixtures (wba, nor, SUN, avl) very favourable. The 5.6-priced Czech Republic international has only conceded two goals in his last five appearances, and has registered four save points over that period, pretty impressive given Arsene Wenger’s side are riding high towards the top of the Premier League.

The potential for Heurelho Gomes still looks reasonable despite conceding twice at Leicester in Gameweek 12. Watford’s fixture list (MUN, avl, NOR, sun, LIV, che) over the next six throws up three favourable match-ups, so having accrued 60 points in FPL this season, more than any other keeper, the Brazilian continues to look well worth his 4.6 price tag.

Chelsea’s Asmir Begovic is retained near the top of our rankings with the Blues facing four very appealing home matches (NOR, tot, BOU, lei, SUN, WAT) over the upcoming period. While it’s hard to place much faith in the Blues backline based on what we’ve seen so far this season, the fact the former Stoke keeper comes in at just 5.0 in FPL heightens his appeal.

The outlook for Southampton’s Maarten Stekelenburg (5.0) looks fairly bright, at least in the short-term, with the Saints facing three strong match-ups (STO, mci, AVL, cpl) over the next four Gameweeks. His prospects are also boosted given Ronald Koeman’s men have registered back-to-back shut-outs against Bournemouth and Sunderland.

Jack Butland and Tim Howard stay around halfway up our ladder, but for vastly different reasons. The Stoke man is the form keeper in the top flight right now, keeping four clean sheets in his last five matches, while also registering three save points and six bonus points. The Potters upcoming schedule (sot, sun, MCI, whm, CPL, MUN) is very unfavourable for the 4.6-valued England international, who may have to mainly rely on save points over that time frame.

On the other side of the coin, Everton’s Howard remains in the middle of a great run of fixtures (AVL, bou, CPL, nor, LEI, new) for the Toffees, but has been unable to register a clean sheet since Gameweek 6. The absence of skipper Phil Jagielka is clearly hurting the prospects of the Everton rearguard, but the 5.1-rated American should still manage a clean sheet or two given the level of opposition Roberto Martinez’ men will be facing.

The prospects for Simon Mignolet (mci, SWA, new, WBA, wat, LEI), and Joe Hart (LIV, SOT, sto, SWA, ars, SUN) still appear fairly bright. Setting us back 5.0 and 5.7 in FPL respectively, both may struggle to deliver great value over the upcoming period – Mignolet, in particular, may struggle for our attentions given that there are cheaper options in Liverpool’s back-four.

Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris (5.1) is back in our thoughts with Spurs facing four of their next six at White Hart Lane (WHM, CHE, wba, NEW sot, NOR). With one clean sheet and four save points in six, though, the Frenchman may struggle for our attentions.

DEFENDERS

With Hector Bellerin still uncertain to feature due to a groin injury, we’re rolling with Arsenal’s Laurent Koscielny as our favoured Gunners defender. The France international’s prospects are also boosted by his set-piece threat, having registered a joint-high five shots among defenders from inside the box over the last four Gameweeks. Available at 6.0 in FPL, and with the aforementioned kind fixtures in the short-term, the former Lorient defender looks the pick of the premium option right now.

Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk may have been toppled from the summit with Saints’ upcoming schedule mixed, but the Dutch international still holds plenty of potential with those two favourable home match-ups against Stoke and Aston Villa in the short-term. The 5.6-priced Van Dijk has already scored twice this season, highlighting his potential at both ends of the pitch, though it’s worth noting he was subbed off in Holland’s win over Wales last night and has since been ruled out of the Dutch squad for Tuesday’s clash with Germany. For now, he remains in contention on our Watchlist until we hear further prognosis on his availability for the weekend.

United’s Chris Smalling remains towards the top of our ladder. The 6.7-priced centre-half offers a reliable source for clean sheets and has also bagged nine bonus points this season, joint-second among defenders in FPL. Despite his lofty valuation, Smalling’s security of starts, allied with some fine fixtures (wat, lei, WHM, bou, NOR, sto), suggests he could be worth that extra outlay. Like Van Dijk, he was also forced off last night and caution is clearly required until we know more on his injury.

Crystal Palace’s Scott Dann is the big climber in our latest refresh on the back of his 10-point haul in the Eagles 2-1 victory at Anfield. The former Blackburn defender is second only to Aleksandar Kolarov for bonus points (nine to 11) amongst defenders, while his goal against Liverpool was no fluke given he’s registered five shots from inside the box in his last four outings. With the fixtures extremely favourable and a kind price tag of 5.1 in FPL, the centre-half looks a great option for our five-man backlines.

The outlook for Liverpool’s Alberto Moreno still looks fairly positive, although he has only picked up five points in FPL over the last three weeks. The Reds left-back has managed six goal attempts over the last four Gameweeks, joint-highest among defenders, while he has also created six chances. Still available at 4.8, and with favourable clashes against Swansea, West Brom, Newcastle and Watford on the horizon, the former Sevilla defender should be able to deliver returns at both ends of the pitch.

Having established himself as a regular in the starting XI at Man City, playing every minute of their last seven matches, Nicolas Otamendi has emerged as a viable option for Fantasy managers. As touched upon already, there are question marks over both Aleksandar Kolarov and Vincent Kompany, so the Argentina international, who does set us back a considerable 6.5 in FPL, has taken over as our preferred City defender. The former Valencia man is also a significant threat from set plays, having totalled three goal attempts in his previous four outings, while he scored six times in La Liga last season.

Although Tottenham haven’t kept a clean sheet in their last three matches, Mauricio Pochettino’s men are generally looking a more solid outfit at the back this season. With those four home matches already mentioned to consider, we’ve moved Eric Dier up a couple of spots in our rankings. The 5.2-rated England U21 international is playing out-of-position in the defensive midfield role for Spurs, and holds some attacking potential, with two goals so far this season.

We’re also seeing plenty of potential in Everton’s Seamus Coleman, despite the Republic of Ireland international’s slightly disappointing underlying statistics given his considerable 5.9 price tag in FPL. The Toffees right-back has only created two chances in his last four outings, while he has totalled four goal attempts, with two from inside the box. As with his team-mate Howard, though, the upcoming fixtures for Everton mean their assets are likely to come good over the next few weeks.

It’s largely the same that can be said of Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta. The Spain international is struggling for defensive points, with just one clean sheet in his last six appearances, while he has failed to create a chance in his last four matches. The 5.9-priced defender does look nailed on at the back for the champions, though, while their home fixtures (NOR, BOU, SUN, WAT) in the next six should really yield some long overdue shut-outs.

After being substituted at half-time in Leicester’s 2-1 win against Watford, and with his place in the starting XI appearing in some doubt, Jeffrey Schlupp (5.0) is a big faller this week. The Ghanaian does hold plenty of upside given he is often fielded in an attacking role by Claudio Ranieri, while the Foxes fixtures (new, MUN, swa, CHE, eve, liv) are fairly reasonable. While Danny Simpson has little attacking potential, the former QPR right-back has started the last five matches, and is available at just 4.0 in FPL.

West Ham’s Aaron Cresswell clings onto a place on our ladder with the Hammers upcoming schedule (tot, WBA, mun, STO, swa, avl) very favourable, particularly in the medium-to-long-term. The 5.6-valued left-back also leads all defenders for chances created over the last four Gameweeks, with eight to his name.

Another defender who usually has to rely on attacking points to provide reasonable value is Newcastle’s Daryl Janmaat. In saying that, Steve McClaren’s side have managed to keep clean sheets in their last two matches, so the Holland international, available at 4.9 in FPL, looks a reasonable option at the minute, although the Magpies upcoming schedule (LEI, cpl, LIV, tot, AVL, EVE) is mixed, despite facing four home matches.

    Hi all.
Need some advice with this bunch.

    Butland, Schmeichel
    Kolarov, Francis, Toby, Ward, Moreno
    Ozil, KDB, Sanchez, Mahrez, Westwood
    Vardy, Martial, Pelle

    1ft, 3.7m in account..

    Either..
    1. Save and then Martial/ Pelle ~ Aguero/ Ighalo
    2. Schmeichel/ KDB/ Pelle ~ Hennessey/ Silva/ Aguero~ over two GW's for -4

As you have Butland, why not do the 1st bit now? Pelle>Ighalo and try and bust all the MAN c/s's eh?

United won't be easy to break down.
Was thinking of bringing in Hennessey and starting him actually.

Selling Pelle next week for Ageuro with KDB- Silva (0.6) helping with that too.. ( As well as the Schmeichel- Henn, 0.5 move)

If I go the Ighalo route, I will have to upgrade Westwood too I think. 5.9m for that.

Tennis is great. No draws like football to frustrate you.

Ah, as you should be. If you can't control yourself/don't know when to stop betting can really destroy your life. Best not to ever get involved I suppose. 🙂

Personally, I don't bet big money, just have the occasional tenner put down.

                No, me neither.

I was playing for a Sunday league team a few years back and the manager was arranging the end of season bash at they greyhounds.

I said ''no offence mate, I'm not being funny, but I won't pay the entry fee because I know how places like that work. I'll meet you afterwards, just let me know where you'll be''. There's no way I'm supporting that.

        Just those above.

Faugheen is a machine hence betting on winning distance rather than win.

Bar a fall your house would be safe on Faugheen.

Festival's tricky. You have to have a few pints before the walk, make sure you know the way from the station. Avoid all touts unless you don't have a ticket, then buy one from right near the entrance. Be careful where you watch races, you need to bet, get a pint, collect etc etc... x 6. It's a tough day.

I'm not so sure Cheese. If we were in the pub it would be very appropriate. Your description of EODM as sexy rock brought this memory to mind.

It's the story of two consenting adults unintentionally polishing the bonnet of a car and having a good time listening to some sexy rock music. We'll leave it at that!

That's the funny thing, readership exploded in the last 24 hours because Reddit discovered it. That's part of the reason why I might drop it. It was nice sharing thoughts with you lovely lot in a format that takes account of my slow and considered style, but I'm not sure if I need what goes with people who don't "get it" if you know what I mean.

Hey lads, looking for a little help here. Have 2FT & 0.4m ITB with no WC.

The last international break crushed me with around 8 injuries/benched players so couldn't get rid of the likes of Gomis or Sakho and TV/SV has suffered not to mention I have had 4 red arrows since and dropped from 221K --> 720K.

    Begovic McCarthy
    Kolarov Moreno Naughton Evans Targett
    Sanchez Mahrez KDB Yaya Coutinho
    Gomis Pelle Sakho

Any ideas on where to begin with my 2FT???

I would begin with losing Gomis.

I would also be thinking of how I was going to get Aguero or at least if I wanted him.

Do you want him this week? Next week or later?

Because how much money you spend and how many transfers you make will be important for this.

      1. The Left Duke #3
        • 11 Years

Defo will want Aguero....thinking 3 frontline & 1 City mid to go to free up cash for him. Would like Lukaku this week home to villa or would I be better off going for Defaleou or Kone to keep cash for kun?

    3. Diva
      • 11 Years
      10 years, 2 months ago

Seriously though, start with your biggest problem and work from there. You're set up for 3-5-2 and given the problems elsewhere you should probably stick with that for now. Will Sakho to Ighalo free up enough cash to let you improve Gomis to, say, Lukaku next week? (you might as well keep him this week if fit).

      1. The Left Duke #3
        • 11 Years

I was thinking maybe Sakho to Lukaku this week by downgrading one of the city MD's right down to a cheap 5th mid and play Gomis home to Bournemouth. Then bring in Aguero next week for Gomis and maybe take a -4 hit if I need the cash. Sound like a plan?

I know about injuries all too well, so I feel your pain.

Can probably stick with begovic until the rest of the team is sorted a bit more.
Evans can go, but the rest of the defence should be alright. Maybe Bertrand/Rojo/Arsenal/Palace. I'm assuming you'll be stuck with Targett until second WC like me.
Midfield is very strong, not all great match-ups this week but no emergencies. Maybe downgrade Sanchez to Ozil when you can, and downgrade or switch the double City coverage.
Gomis and Sakho really need to go. The obvious options are Vardy/Lukaku/Kane/Ighalo and the return of Aguero depending on downgrades.

There you go, hope it helps.

Thanks for the detailed response and it does suck to have so many injuries after a break. I remember looking at it with 8 flags (5 were red) and having 1 FT and going where do I start.

Was hoping to upgrade Targett to cheap Palace DF but I think my frontline & 1 of the city MD's need to go first. A frontline of Aguero/Lukaku/Ighalo is what I'll aim for.

        Cheers for your thoughts

Provided all goes well this week with internationals how does this look?

    Cech
    Smalling / Rose / Janmaat
    Sanchez / KDB / Mahrez / Ozil
    Vardy / Kane / Lukaku

Subs: Gomes / Wanyama / Dawson / Moreno

Depending on how Aguero plays during the LIV game i'm thinking

    Vardy > Kun
    Sanchez > Silva
    KDB > Bolasie

    or

    Lukaku > Kun
    KDB > Bolasie

    Other options?

Because your other two strikers are good value for money. At that price you'd want Kane to score week in week out. Also expecting big from Lukaku this year.
Anyways we should get more indication from upcoming GWs.

Too much money in defense to get frontline of Kane Kun and kaku.

Fair enough. I'm looking at downgrading Janmaat and Dawson, however with Smalling I think KKL front 3 still might be out of reach

I am sure I will not be missed. I have lots of important stuff to do.

I may finally get the completion certificate for the house I we built! It has taken sooo long to get to this point.

I have a trench to dig as my phone cable is still lying on top of the ground most of the way to the junction with the main line.

I am redecorating the living room. We will then have a red feature wall with red check curtains. (Mrs Cheeseoid seeme to like the idea)

So I will be pretty busy! And I have to do my bit with FIFFSA of course

Without going too much into this particular algorithm & in the simplest of definitions - goalimpact aims to quantify to what extent a player contributes to the goal difference per minute of a team.

Can anyone hazard a guess as to which two are the highest current players on the all-time top 20 list (for reference, Puskás is top of the list)?

Ah the 4.2, Stanislas is a funny one. He has been great in the last one and a half games... sadly his finishing has been awful. Many are looking at the team news v Swans with a view, Pugh is the irritant. Careful.

What are people's thoughts on keeping Martial..
I still have him and thinking of just keeping.
Kind of torn on these moves ATM for the direction of my team.

Which of these look better for say 2 weeks down the line?
Need to start making moves soon to accommodate them..

      1. Martial/Aguero/ Silva
      2. Ighalo/ Aguero/ KDB
      3. Kane/ Lukaku/ KDB

Yep. That's not what I was asking tho..

In 2 weeks time which 3 is expected to be more essential..
          Still Number 3?
If I go with option 3- then I can pretty much forget about Aguero and he is prob expected to be over any rustiness by then.

              Question (completely paraphrased now) was
Which combination looks like it would be better to own in 2 or 3 weeks time.

Aguero/Silva are just getting back into it now and will take some time to adjust.

The changes I am planning will take a couple of weeks to implement between not taking hits etc

Bar a spell during GW's 20-23 when Leicester have (BOU, tot, avl, STK), their fixtures truly are worrying imo. It isn't until Gw27 that their barren run ends & they face only three good sides from there on until Gw36, where they close the season with three relatively tough fixtures on paper.

Leicester's fixtures post-(new) Gw14 onward: (MUN, swa, CHE, eve, liv, MCI, BOU, tot)

Think I'm hopping off the train once I hit my WC - http://statsbomb.com/2015/11/leicester-city-and-their-trip-to-the-kamikaze-zone/

Not sure that makes much sense tbh, Butland's getting a plethora of save points with a high likelihood of netting you consistent 3-4 pointers even during his tough matches imo. Not to mention his next five are still decent fixtures (sou, sun, MCI, whm, CRY). Keeping in mind the low ceiling of points GK's generally have & are generally the closest in point discrepancies. Due to save points & their subsequent BPS for GK's like Panti/Butland who are capable of producing them at a consistent per game level.

Surely with Agüero around the corner, Saint's upcoming run, Leicester's upcoming run & the ever changing form of your attack, you have way ore pressing issues at hand, no? To me that seems like an extremely unnecessary move that cold easily be postponed, considering you also have Schmeichel who you could easily play this GW (new) & Gw15 (swa) to avoid playing Butland's two tough fixtures (sou, MCI).

Most of us have Leicester attackers, and I don't see much wrong with that fixture list from an attacking aspect, other than the Manchester games, and Spurs (but that game is a way off yet). Most of the others have leaked plenty of goals at home already. Surely Leicester can score in most of those games?

Not sure why there's doubt, or why there'll be a turning point. City is the only team that has scored more goals, and only by one. Leicester have split their goals home and away, as have Vardy and Mahrez, and they have already scored against some of the better defensive teams, including Arsenal and Spurs. I don't know why people think they will stop scoring.

They've been over performing & have been slightly lucky with their results I'm sure they'll score, but I'm not sure it'll be to the same degree as these past fixtures. For reference they only scored once vs Spurs & twice vs Arsenal

Their their goals per shot on target rate is at 40%, that is a worryingly high conversion rate imo (albeit not Hammers level high prior to last week). Leicester are dominating in very low quality and relatively high quality chances, I'm just not confident they'll maintain these out of this world performances both stylistically & statistically. These tougher fixtures arr at the very least serve as a base for regression, if not statistically.

Think there“s an ample opportunity here.

Largely depends if I go with the Agüero/Ighalo/Kane, opting for a power front 8 tbh.

Would rather keep Mahrez, as I see more upside in any of Agüero/Kane/Lukaku/Ighalo than Vardy in these next 5/6 matches. Not to mention, cheaper midfielders are a bit trivial right now, so I'd like to keep Mahrez as a safety net of sorts for his easier fixtures here & rotate him accordingly (also festive rotation).

I agree, so many forward options right now while there aren't too many in Mahrez's price range (apart from our beloved Bolasie's and Deulofeu's 😉 ).

Ighalo's fixtures do look a bit rough around Xmas and beyond, though.

Oh for sure, I was never (wasn't) planning on keeping Ighalo long-term, just for his next three or four after the ManU match. (avl, NOR, sun, LIV). Think I'll either switch to another striker in that budget range or just switch to the fodder 5th mid & upgrade him to a Lukaku/Giroud/etc.

I'll be keeping for the immediate future vs Newcastle, after that things get complicated trying to justify the double-up imo. Like you said, Agüero's in the mix by then & overall I think there are other teams that are in as good a form as Leicester, with better fixtures & with equal replacements to back my evacuation of regression bound Leicester City.

But why will they regress now? Yes, Utd is a tough fixture, but what other reason do you have for believing regression will kick in long-term? And even if they regress a bit, how many other teams can match their goal scoring potential at that price?

This. The value remains too great. They'll have to blank for a while to justify dropping them. I don't see that happening. If you got Vahrez early enough, THEY are the Kun enablers.

But why wait for said multiple blanks? You make the argument of value, though surely now with other top teams seeing a shift & form/fixtures, there's a valid reason to get rid of at least one, no?

xG & the a large majority of the analytics community correctly analyzed that Spurs were under performing offensively & that Kane was very unlucky not to convert from the myriad of chances he got & that he was explosion imminent, if you will. He then went on to score a hat-trick, & he's still under performing to his current xG. Not to mention it accurately predicting West Ham's regression, or how Arsenal attack was worth the double up after the Leicester game with their monstrous attacking stats & xG, ManCity as well.

Because I don't foresee the blanks coming at a rate that makes their value poor. Could Kane out produce Vardy over the next ten GWs or so? Sure. But I don't think the disparity will be great enough to justify the extra $3 million (given what I initially paid for Vardy) needed for Kane.

That extra cash is the difference between Smalling and Simpson, or KDB/Silva and Tadic. It's not worth it, IMO.

If there was no cap on spending, is STILL consider Vardy. Within spending parameters the case gets even better.

I don't think any will headline stating they'll regress starting anywhere between Gw13-15, but I've drawn my own conclusions on this thread as to why it'd happen & their subsequent fixtures being a likely harbinger imo. The data is all there, Diva.

If you're comfortable with your interpretation Zasa then that's great. Just challenging you to make sure you had thought it through fully. 🙂

Ha! Sorry if I was being a bit confrontational there.

                      Thanks 🙂

I'm with you on this Zasa.

My current plan is to run a front three of Aguero - Kane - Lukaku but not until Aguero proves he's fit and firing. Keeping Mahrez for Leicester cover in the midfield four.

Nice one GK 😉 Seems to be the safer way of skinning this cat.

I thinkI will just wait and see what happens on this one. I could consider losing one Vardy but I don't know who is really going to score more at Mahrez's price point than him. He has exceeded expectations by so much but he is cheap for what he gives you.

Considering there are a lot of people replacing Payet, I'm surprised Tadic isn't a big bandwagon.

I think he's a decent shout but he's been a tad inconsistent over the years. He always seems to be subbed off early for Long/Ward-Prowse etc.

        Decent for his price though

Many like myself already own Mane and Pelle with the intention to sell one or both.

Tadic has been better than both recently. I own him and support saints so obviously showing my bias 😉

Also own him in fantrax haha

I guess what I'm saying is most aren't interested in a sideways transfer.
