Sneaking in late like John Terry in a triumphant team photo, Granville gatecrashes this week’s ScoutCast after we drafted in Andy85WSM as his able replacement.

Andy tag teams with Jonty and myself as we look back ten days at the long forgotten Gameweek 12, before grappling with another round of posers from the community.

We cast tentative votes on the Aguero debate, assess Lukaku’s armband credentials, check that we really can write off Chelsea and question whether time is up for Sanchez in the light of Ozil’s streak of assists.

After all that, Granville parachutes in and we get a few minutes to gloat over his injury-ravaged squad. A worthy cameo contribution.

This episode of the ScoutCast was recorded and broadcast live on Wednesday evening, published via our YouTube channel.

                Solid transfers.

I can do Mitrovic to Kane and payet to bolasie this week.

But then I'd needs to do Pelle to Aguero and Kolarov to 4.5. To fund it I'd still also need to do KDB to 8.3 (no one I like) or Sanchez to ozil.

  12. Holding fire on Aguero plans
    Mr Alex
    • 11 Years
    10 years, 1 month ago

Since beginning to use FFS I have only ever been a skulker, skulking around the sites content, taking on board that which I deem useful. So, I thought after all this time greatly appreciating the insight of many users and contributors on this site, I thought I'd finally write something other than an occasional RMT...

Basically, and straight to the point, I think those who wait on purchasing Aguero have a slight advantage on those who have already done the deed. There's lots of players lurking around who, upon being turned to as cheaper replacements options for current premium midfield options, make the Aguero transition somewhat easier (Deulofeu, Lanzini, Tadic, Willain, Mane, Coutinho, YYT, Barkley, Eriksen- I've probably missed some).

For me at the moment there is a lot of players who could fit into our teams, however I feel that waiting patiently may have its value. Here are some possible reasons:

Deulofeu- Despite his recent form, surely it is possible that in three weeks he may well disappoint his owners by being unable to maintain his current hot patch.

Lanzini- He hasn't been gifted a huge amount of time to shine but maybe he will fit seamlessly into the Payet void, and that, combined with his cheap price would make him very hard to turn down.

Tadic- He appears to get little mention here at the moment, but maybe Tadic will continue to deliver the points with consistency despite as already mentioned, not having the most world-shaking stats.

Willian- He has performed well, and were these performances to translate into more FPL returns, coupled with a Chelsea turn-around, he would surely spring more fiercely onto our radars.

Please understand that I am in no way saying these examples above will come to pass, they are just examples which underline my current thinking: That in my opinion anything could happen and we need a couple more weeks to assess the vast array of midfield options before diving.

For this reason I find it difficult to understand why many people are diving in for Aguero so soon, because, although they may have a great player in Aguero, the players they purchased to enable him may well not deliver as hoped. Is it not possible that people now, in order to bring in Aguero, people have restructured teams built upon players who could easily flop (e.g the Firmino's of this world), when a week or two more of waiting could have resulted in a more informed team restructure?

The alternative to diving in and making a choice now is sticking with your current midfield, which may or may not look something like mine:

    Sanchez, KDB, Ozil, Mahrez

At this moment I would not want to break up this midfield by purchasing any of the players named above. I would have thought that keeping this midfield, whilst waiting just a little while longer for some real stand-out midfielders to emerge is the better option?

For me the worst case scenario is that Aguero comes back into the fold and instantly scores goals. That would be bad, but nothing horrific, as at the same time I would be confident of my own captain choice bringing home, at least a bit of bacon. However in regards to these cheaper midfield options, what I expect is that over the coming weeks there is going to be a real sifting of the wheat from the chaff, and those that are patient will be able to select the nice juicy bits of wheat, and restructure to their Aguero-centered teams accordingly.

This writing is perhaps slightly long-winded when the essence of my opinion is: Be patient and don't dive in. It is also of course far from being statistics laden but is more me churning out my own thoughts with what I feel is a bit of common sense. Hopefully it is of some benefit to a few of you.

Many people will probably disagree and I welcome all opinions and thoughts.

Yes but only for a short period. I have every intention of bringing in Aguero (incredible player C) but am happy to captain an A or B (Sanchez/Lukaku/KDB) for a couple weeks whilst I wait for an really good option D to turn up. I can't see how two weeks without Aguero is going to do too much serious damage. I could of course be proven very wrong.

Yeah I think that's very sensible. If he comes off the bench and scores 2 goals this weekend not many will actually benefit. The picture on Lanzini and Deulofeu etc will become clearer the longer you wait and obv there's 3 good strikers out there already.

Over the long term though you'd have to have him though!

Aguero has only produced one great captaincy performance so far this season.

He needs to improve considerably on his early season performances before he becomes the outstanding player to captain every week.

And Aguero hasn't really been incredible this season so far (apart from one match against Newcastle when he scored 5 goals in a match for the first time since he was 12 - he isn't likely to do that again this season).

Haha, i thought it was a good post!

And I agree, but I'm definitely getting Aguero this Sunday as long as he plays and doesn't get injured.

This is where the cheap 5th midfielders really come into their own imo.

Ighalo. The answer is Ighalo. You can have that exact same midfield with Alli, Vardy, Aguero and Ighalo with a strong defence as well.

      You had me at hello.

      Nice post, good read.

It depends on your changes to get him in.

For example, I am downgrading Kompany to Souaré, KDB to Ozil/Mata, and finally to bring home my point, Martial to Kun. Defensively yes, it is a downgrade albeit Kompany hasn't been setting the world alight for me. But I am happy with the midfield "downgrade". My changes to bring him in on balance give me a greater chance of better returns I reckon.

Plus I feel so much safer having him as a captaincy choice.

Yeh. Ozil is a fantastic 'downgrade' for sure. I was more leaning towards the Deulofeu, Coutinho type optionS. Those who show promise but would like to see more first. Ozil is a consistent as it gets.

I wildcarded just before Lukaku decided to explode (gw11) and went with a fifth midfielder (Barry) in the rejig so I have that extra bit of cash elsewhere. Don't have that power front 8. I think what you are saying will be particularly relevant to those guys.

Coutinho could be a great option under Klopp but he's in a different bracket than Deulofeu, being easily more expensive.

Yeh will have to monitor him for sure. Yeh different price bracket, although is possible that these kind of players are fighting for the same spot irrespective of price. This is the case with me anyway, as the only real way of getting Kun is downgrading KDB (not losing Sanchez). Despite the big difference in price between e.g Lanzini and Coutinho, they are fighting for the same spot unless I decide to ship Manrez in the not too distant future

Yeah I plan to get Aguero soonish but not this week. I'll be employing delay tactics so I also have a clearer idea of how I can free up funds in midfield. Fortunately I have a 352 setup with Ighalo as an enabler. A Mane downgrade can free up the necessary funds to upgrade Pelle to Aguero. Still, the options you present are all a bit of a lottery really. Delaying the move and waiting for the opportune moment is a good tactic.

I see your point alex and hope you're wrong ;). I have the exact midfield as you, but have ighalo Pelle and vardy up top. I can do Pelle to aguero for free. As most people will have one of lukaku or Kane i hope aguero delivers soon. If i would first get Kane/lukaku instead of aguero i think i'll always be one step behind the rest

You haven't thought about getting first one of Kane/Lukaku, waiting on Aguero to perform, and then downgrading for example KDB to one of the cheaper midfield options above?

Yes I have thought of that, but right now I have the money to do Pelle>Aguero for free next week, without having to restructure my team. Also, if Aguero hits form soon you would expect KDB to do fine as well. Having them both in place already, while others may struggle to get Aguero in while missing his points and price rises will hopefully benefit me. Basically it comes down to if Kane/Lukaku will outscore Aguero in the next month, right?

I've been thinking about this and actually posted the following about 10 days ago so the actual stats might be a bit off.

"Ignoring a -4 hit over the next 2 GWs
      either
      a. Pelle to Aguero

      or

      b. Cedric/Pelle/Mane/Janmaat (PPG 16 form 12.4) to Kane/Ozil/Kompany/Smalling (PPG 22.7 form 29.1)

then if needs be Aguero WC in Jan"

Captaincy aside it still seems there are viable ways round Aguero. I agree it should always be about Aguero + 1 due to his price when making comparisons.
Again the other argument is a consistent captain v. an explosive option. Vardy would have brought in 172 points against Aguero's 88 so far this season.
can see pros & cons for bringing in Aguero. but the way the big hitters have been performing this season I think there's a lot to be said for playing a more balanced, consistent side gathering points.

Wise to let Kun settle in of course and get 60 minutes under his belt. Plus the opposition are fairly solid at the back.

I would say however that the name of the FPL game is to always be that one step ahead of the pack with getting a player in at the very moment he comes good, not just after when the bandwagons start. So the likes of Deuloufeu and Lanzini may pile up the points in your monitoring phase.

Yeh this is an very good point you make. However, it is similar to the start of the season with Mahrez. There was much talk about him but I wasn't 100% convinced. I waited a game or two more and then purchased him. Although I missed out on two game weeks or so, I was much more confident that he would be a good buy. On the other hand I could have jumped in right at the start and bought him, and he could have turned out to be a flop, and a transfer would have been needlessly wasted. It's a very fine balance of knowing when to pounce I guess. For me personally I like to be totally confident before I do make he move, especially when I am already pleased with my current team.

I have seen a lot of these comments, and thought I should share my view, as you have done yours.
I currently sit with 3 of your 4 midfielders, and have plenty of room for Aguero. Way too few people on this forum have actually sat back and thought a bit of planning. Surely, bringing someone in AFTER a haul isn't really worth that much?
Well, the same can be said for many other players than Aguero.
For example, I personally believe Deulofeu to be a terrible FPL option. Was not given game time at the start of the season by Martinez, and really wasn't producing much. However, with the in-form Lukaku and Kone, he has managed to get on ground and made a few FPL managers happy. Everton have a good rotating midfield so one would think once he stops delivering, he will be put on the bench. You state that there are a lot of good options out there in midfield, but some careful planning could well do the trick.
What I'm getting to is not infact that getting Aguero later is a terrible thing, rather it is that for you to change your team completely after for example an Aguero haul is loosing you more points than A) getting him in now. or B) not planning on getting him in (like I think a few on this forum are planning on).
Again, what I'm seeing here is too many people trading around, "just for the fun of it" instead of analysing and setting up a long term plan. While I agree that people should be patient, I think they should be patient in the way that their planning should be well-thought out, and followed. Many tend to trade out a player because they under perform for a while, but if you brought them in, they will eventually score for you. I can say it has worked for me at least. Brought Lukaku in from gwk 1, and have had him since. Underperforming lots in the start, but is now beginning to settle for some bigger scores.
      TL:DR
plan better, or no cigar for you

      1. Mr Alex
        • 11 Years

I agree with most of what you're saying, but I think in the context of all the current midfield options, waiting is the best option. For example, Deulofeu is unproven fpl goods, Firmino is also unproven, There are questions over Coutinho's comsistency, there are questions over whether Willian can keep doing what he's doing but turn it into more fpl points, people are wondering if Tadic can keep delivering, the list goes on.

There's a lot of uncertainty around these options and for me I am not confident diving in to any of these players. I agree that being ahead of the pack and not missing hauls is important but I think this is an unusual situation with so many players on the brink of being good fantasy options, but not quite there (in my opinion). Many other times in a season I try to be ahead of the pack with my transfers, but as somebody mentioned above, choosing at the moment from all these options is a lottery. For me I am happy to wait for emergers for the appear. One possibility is that I may miss hauls from one these players I could have bought, but I already have a strong midfield so shouldn't be an issue. Another is that I could buy a flop or two, and then have to waste transfers that would be much more effective being used elsewhere. I just don't see the merit in rushing in to an unproven player + Aguero (first game back from injury, not guaranteed start) when I have strong midfield and strong attack already.

I strongly agree with your final paragraph though and I think this is one of the silliest things I see on this site on a regular basis. I see time and time again thst people dump out players after X amount of time not performing. Those who stick with players will be most greatly rewarded. E.g Sanchez for me at the start. I stuck with him when many transferred out, and I got his 3 goal haul. I see the same happening now with players like Mane, but I guarantee he'll score well very soon and leave many managers rueing their hasty decisions.

Payet to Deulofeu for a hit this week, would probably bench Vardy OR play Vardy and leave Payet on the bench, lose another 0.1 and ship him next week? Cheers!!

assuming he was red flagged at one point and went straight to green? but I wasn't monitoring him so I can't be sure..I feel like he was only yellow most of the time

there's plenty, many are hoping he'll drop to 4.2m soon (me included)

      - some were avoiding because they thought they NEEDED 3 Southampton players lol
      - he does get a fair share of yellows (just came off a ban in fact) which is a problem
      - a lot of people don't subscribe to the 343 with cheap but guaranteed 90 5th mid
