Arsenal’s Francis Coquelin is set for an extended spell on the sidelines. Liverpool face a wait over the hamstring problem that forced Philippe Coutinho off during Saturday’s win at City, whilst Louis van Gaal hopes to have Wayne Rooney back for United’s Champions League showdown against PSV.

Arsenal
Earlier today, Arsene Wenger confirmed that Francis Coquelin will be sidelined for a number of weeks with the knee injury that forced him off on 14 minutes at West Brom last Saturday:

“I’m always a bit cautious because we had lots of bad surprises on the scans, but it is at least two months. I can’t say more than that but certainly for the next two months we will play without Coquelin. We have players who can play in this position like Mathieu Flamini, but also Calum Chambers, who has been educated as a central midfielder. So this is a good opportunity for other players to show us they can do the job.”

Wenger also has concerns over Mikel Arteta, who followed Coquelin into the treatment room at the 49-minute mark due to a calf strain. On a more positive note, Aaron Ramsey returned to training this morning as he steps up his rehabilitation from a hamstring injury. The Welshman is expected to be available for tomorrow evening’s encounter with Dinamo Zagreb.

Bournemouth
The Cherries were without a trio of new absentees for the Swansea clash. Despite playing for Paoland over the international break, Artur Boruc is contending with a groin injury, Tokelo Rantie returned to South Africa to attend to his sick mother, while Lee Tomlin is nursing a groin complaint.

Liverpool
Philippe Coutinho was substituted in the 68th minute against Manchester City after pulling up with a hamstring issue. The Brazilian midfielder will undergo a scan to hone in on the root of his discomfort, but Jurgen Klopp is optimistic that he just experienced cramp:

“I hope we got there early enough. It was a little bit of cramp. He felt something. I hope that’s all it was because everybody can see that he’s very important to us. He’s in really good shape in this moment and I hope we could react early enough.”

Elsewhere in the Liverpool camp, Jordan Henderson revealed that he’s closing in on a return to action having missed the previous 11 Gameweeks because of a foot injury:

“I’m getting there. This is one of the longest periods of time I’ve been out for and that has been tough for me. Hopefully I’m not too far away now.”

Manchester United
In the wake of the Red Devils’ late triumph over Watford at Vicarage Road, Louis van Gaal offered an update on this fitness of his squad. Phil Jones and Ander Herrera both left the field prematurely and have been ruled out of Man United’s midweek Champions League encounter. The Dutchman is confident that neither has suffered a serious injury, though:

“Jones and Herrera, I think, are not available for Wednesday. My first impression is that they are not too heavy but the problem is that we have to play Wednesday already. Jones had a twisted ankle and Herrera a hamstring injury.”

On the attacking front, Wayne Rooney is expected to recover in time to start against PSV Eindhoven in midweek, but Anthony Martial is a major doubt due to his foot complaint:

“Rooney is ill, and that is a matter of days, not weeks. I expect that he shall play Wednesday, but you never know, I do not know the development of the illness. Today he is at home, we gave him a day off to heal the illness; tomorrow he comes and I can say more. Martial is another problem, his foot, it is not as heavy as the media have written but we have to wait and see if he can play Wednesday.”

Van Gaal also went on to explain that James Wilson was not selected because of a swollen knee and a lack of match fitness, while Marcos Rojo suffered from jet lag on his return from international duty:

“Wilson had a swollen knee after training. I did not play [Marcos] Rojo also because when you have jet-lag you cannot play. Wilson did not play for six weeks, so you cannot play in the Premier League without match rhythm; you have seen with Memphis that in the second half he was less [effective]. I had Rashford on the bench, a fantastic talent, but Wilson has more experience in the league.”

Newcastle United
Cheick Tiote lasted just 20 minutes against Leicester City before being substituted with a groin injury. Steve McClaren bemoaned the Ivorian’s early withdrawal but remained optimistic of a positive prognosis:

“That was a big blow for us. We are not making excuses, but we have obviously already got Colback out. Once we lost Cheick, there were not a lot of midfield options. With Tiote there, we felt quite stable, especially because Vurnon (Anita) was probably the only one out of the whole group who did their job. We will have a look at Cheick in the next few days, but hope it is not too serious.”

Norwich City
Russell Martin was absent from the matchday squad at Chelsea by virtue of undisclosed personal reasons, while Alexander Tettey picked up a thigh problem during the international break.

Stoke City
Xherdan Shaqiri experienced a tight hamstring in the first half of the Potters’ road clash with Southampton, prompting Mark Hughes to replace the Switzerland international 20 minutes after the break:

“He had a little tightness in his hamstring to be fair, and that was the reasoning behind taking him off when we did. He wanted to go out and play the second half but it was important that we protected him a little bit, which is what we did. I was really pleased with what he offered us once more today. You can see each game he plays that he is adapting and showing the undoubted qualities he possesses.”

Which players are affected by Coquelin's absence? The keeper, defence. Is Cazorla's attacking intent hampered by a lesser able DM next to him?

It'll be status quo for Cazorla, he'll just have Famini slipping him the ball rather than Coq

    Right, next week.

    Butland
    Bellerin / Rojo / VVD
    KDB / Alexis / Mahrez / Bolasie
    Vardy / Kun / Lukaku

    Ruddy / Huth / Richards / Wanyama

Already used my transfer on Kun, 0 ITB, hold or use a -4? Not too confident with VVD and Rojo coming up against Mahrez, Vardy, KDB and Kun.

Happy days, GW score of 107 puts me inside the top 1k for the week. Not sure I've managed that before.

Played my bench boost this week (only notable profit was Simpson's 10 points as last sub) due to concerns over my squad strength if I get Aguero.

That's pushed me up into the top 67k, with 3 green arrows after my WC, and more importantly means I'm ahead in mini-leagues.

Cheers all for the replies to me and to each other (which I spend most of the day reading) - they're a huge help!

Ok Deulofeu vs Barkley last 4 gameweeks:

    Per appearance:
Same number of chances created per game (0.2 difference)
Same number of touches final third
Same number of shots in the box
Deulofeu touches in the box VASTLY superior
Barkley 1 more shot on target per game (personally think his higher number of shots on target are misleading due to large number coming from outside the box)

Additionally if you take a closer look at Deleufeu's chances created, they are in much more threatening areas - the box. And this is all from less minutes than Barkley and he is cheaper...

So I'm not sure this difference between the two was labelled as "night and day"!

Well that's why I mentioned his shots from outside the box. But yes he has been superior here, though Deulofeu with 4 more penalty area touches per game suggests there is more to come from him if he starts shooting!

Penalty area touches mean nada for a winger imo - if the same penalty area touches are made centrally , it is relevant

Like any stat it can't just be taken at face value. But it's confirmation he's getting into dangerous areas and his quality in the ball looks to be pretty good.. If I had him I'd be optimistic 🙂

If money doesn't matter, I'd prefer Barkley since he's more likely to play 90 mins and is more of a goalscorer. Also on direct free kicks

Good points. The minutes do worry me with Del, which is why I haven't got him yet. Free kicks I'm not too bothered about generally- but could be reason enough for some to go Barkley over Del

You're looking at all the wrong statistics, I'll be nice and explain!

      1. SOT are more closely correlated with goals than SIB so silly to try to argue SIB a better measure of xG, Barkley averages 4x as many shots and 3x as many on target. Shots from outside the box do go in!
      2. Deulofeu has averaged 100% of the two shots he has taken in the last four weeks on target and 50% goal conversion (unsustainable see Tony Martial).
      3. Barkley has created slightly more chances per game (most closely correlated with assists) and, although this isn't really a big difference, he has created slightly more.
      4. Touches in the box are (like SIB) also less well correlated with goals than SOT or even just total shots (hardly surprising really) see, http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2015/10/01/one-stat-to-rule-them-all/
      5. Deulofeu rarely gets 90 minutes so to extrapolate his numbers and assume he magically will in future seems flawed.

      Night and day.

The one thing it certainly isn't is night and day! It's comes down to opinions from watching the games as well as the bare stats. No need to be condescending and "be nice and explain". That's just rude when I'm trying to argue some valid points.

I'm agree that the best statistical indicator is SoT but it would be foolish to base a transfer purely on stats, let alone the small sample size that four games provides. More important that stats is how dangerous a player looks when watching the game and in what areas of the pitch he looks dangerous in; and Deulofue comes out on top here.

My comparison highlights the potential of Deulofeu

Argh sent too early! Anyway you get my point. I enjoy reading your stuff And agree with a lot of your conclusions but stats aren't the be all and end all 🙂

Disagree that how dangerous a player looks and subjective opinions are more important, and I'm just as entitled to my opinion that it's night and day as you are to yours that it isn't.

Please don't get offended and accuse me of being rude for pointing out the sound reasoning behind the opinion that you chose to attack in your comment first by quoting it (with statistics that are poorly correlated with goals while ignoring those that are most correlated).

Fair enough. Sorry Jose thought you were being rude and disregarding what I said, but just me having a bad day me thinks :o. I now appreciate you explaining your view 🙂

I can understand that in your view it is night and day, based in SoT. I think my opinion comes down to where Barkley's shots come from. I see SoT from outside the box as less important than any shots from in the box. That's why I didn't put any emphasis on this stat. If Barkley's gets in the box more, I'll be watching him very closely. I also think from watching them I have been able to see that Deulofeu is likely to create more clear cut chances, thus would have a higher xGa in my eyes.

And I agree with Deulofeu's minutes being a problem for fantasy prospects. I was suggesting that if he gets more minutes then the stats could get better. But it's his lack of game time why I haven't got him despite my arguing 🙂

Hey I haven't watched him so I couldn't possibly say you're wrong for thinking that based on watching. Personally I generally follow numbers rather than trusting my eyes to analyse a game but that doesn't mean you should.

Would enjoy a friendly contest to see which of the two performs better over a longer period, will be interesting to see whether the eyes or the numbers win it!

Sounds like an opportunity for a friendly Stats Vs Eyes contest! Would you be interested? Shall we say next 6 gameweeks, player that scores the most FPL points wins? 🙂

Aha yes I was literally just thinking I'd be interested to see if the eye test overcomes the pure stats! Game on Jose 🙂

Though I must admit to significant worries about Deulofeu's game time haha. I just replied above by the way to ur previous message!

I actually only watched a couple of Everton's matches and I noticed Barkely wasn't really impressive upfront, last match Barkley was very, very lucky to get that score while Deulofeu was the exact opposite to not get any returns.

Deulofeu is their play maker on the wing.. he doesn't only dribble past defenders and cross or shoot, he actually plays some nice through balls to the strikers, if Kone and Lukaku were a tiny bit better the last game, Deulofeu would've gotten 3 or 4 assists !

This is pretty much what I'm trying to get across. Watching the game shows a lot more than the stats between the two!

    Current defense:

    Butland, Hennessey
    Janmaat, Kolarov, Moreno, Nyom, Evans

    Janmaat -> 4.5m

Who's the best downgrade option? Or should I go Simpson to have a little more funds?

    Mata & Vardy -> Barkley & Kane (-8)

    Or

    Sanchez & Vardy -> Silva & Kane (-8)

    Or

    Forget Kane

    What would you do ?

A: Play Mahrez & Vardy (MUN) and bench Mane (mci)

B: -4 to transfer Mane -> Barkley (bou) or Coutinho (SWA) to play and bench one of Mahrez or Vardy

Just feel B might be a good move for the next 5 - 6 GWs.

I can still do B and bench Mahrez.

A: Play both Vardy & Mahrez

B: Play Vardy and the one I buy with Mahrez on the bench

        What do you think ?

Play Mane? City sloppy at the back and with no Pelle, he could be the main man up front.

Otherwise I think you're best off playing Vahrez.

Got 3m in the bank and done 2 transfers already. Not sure if taking out Oxford and McCarthy worth taking a bit for? I brought in lingard to free up funds for Aguero. With my 3 strikers and how they have been playing I'm not sure it's worth getting Aguero just yet

Not worth a hit, no. In that case, looks good to go.

"Strange beasts, expectations. They are used by clubs to increase (or at least assess) managerial performance, indicating what they expect for money spent on players and wages. Yet managers themselves use them in reverse, putting a lid upon supporters’ unrealistic ambitions.

Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino both refrained from spraying cold water on the hype after 4-1 victories, but were both also keen to reiterate the danger of getting carried away.

“After the games we’ve played, we have quality enough [to qualify for the Champions League], but football is about mental state and there a lot of components you need to manage,” said Pochettino.

“It’s only okay that you ask this [top four] if you ask it as well after Crystal Palace,” was Klopp’s plea. “We can’t change our targets every two weeks just because we have won. We don’t have to think about it. Our situation is difficult enough.”

That reining in of excitement is understandable, but managers must be careful not to dampen the mood too much. Both clubs finally have young, hungry squads managed by coaches who seem the perfect fit, and are making significant progress. Liverpool’s title bid of 2013/14 shows that a rolling stone soon picks up speed and momentum. That can be hugely powerful.

Both Liverpool and Spurs have beaten and outclassed, the current title favourites 4-1, and they both have new-found strength in depth. Liverpool’s bench on Saturday contained Daniel Sturridge, Christian Benteke, Joe Allen and Kolo Toure despite having Jordan Henderson, Jon Flanagan, Joe Gomez, Danny Ings and Mamadou Sakho injured. Tottenham’s bench featured Ryan Mason, Kieran Tripper, Andros Townsend and Ben Davies; Nabil Bentaleb and Nacer Chadli are still to return. Finally, of the 22 players starting for the two sides this weekend, only Martin Skrtel is aged 30 or above. Suddenly, there are very few reasons to be fearful. The effect of these two managers cannot be overstated.

Aiming for a top-four place may still be the realistic expectation of Liverpool and Spurs, but this is the wrong season to place any false ceiling on achievement. Each of the title-challenging squads are flawed and each have at least two match-winners.

Futhermore, 28 points is the lowest total to lead the Premier League after 13 games since 1998/99; this should be wide open. If Leicester can top the table with more than a third of the season played, there is no reason for Tottenham or Liverpool to see fourth place as the height of their ambition."

Nice analysis. Very open season, no reason why Liv / Spurs couldn't go on to win the title. If not this season then definitely in seasons to come.

      All aboard the hype train!

Good read. I think Liverpool won't quite have the consistency yet to be a real title contender, but I give Spurs more of a chance. Both certainly in the race for top four!
