We take our regular trip to the Weekly Shop this evening, assessing the player lists of our partner games to pinpoint the likely targets that will make up our weekend lineups.

The player analysis is split into two sections: I’ll break down the key targets that no squad can do without in “Better Buys”, before seeking out those one-shot “Poundstretcher” prospects that can provide us points, whilst freeing up funds.

For this week’s selection, we’re scanning the players lists in our two partner games – FantasyBet and Premier Punt.

Better Buys

In six league matches at Old Trafford this season, United have conceded just once and Louis Van Gaal’s defence looks set to continue that resilient run with the visit of a blunted West Ham. David De Gea (FantasyBet 5.5m, PremierPunt 8.2m) is certain to start and requires less outlay than the Red Devils’ only other guaranteed backline regular Chris Smalling (FantasyBet 6m, PremierPunt 9.5m).

Against Swansea, Liverpool picked up a second clean sheet in six league outings under Jurgen Klopp last weekend. After selecting Alberto Moreno (FantasyBet 5m, PremierPunt 7m) in the Poundstretchers category, we hand the Spaniard a promotion this time around on the back of his maximum bonus haul against Garry Monk’s men. With a trip to struggling Newcastle up next, Moreno’s raids down the flank could finally come to fruition as he looks to add to a single assist so far.

Sadio Mane (FantasyBet 8m, PremierPunt 11.6m) looked lively in the defeat at the Etihad and created the Saints’ consolation in a 3-1 loss. The Senegalese midfielder has three goals and six assists this season and, having netted against Liverpool this evening, may well add to that tally with Aston Villa visiting St Mary’s. Dusan Tadic (FantasyBet 7m, PremierPunt 10.4m) is a viable alternative – the Serb comes in cheaper than his team-mate and is currently leading on overall points.

Romelu Lukaku (FantasyBet 8m, PremierPunt 12.1m) has been labelled as inconsistent in the past but five goals in four shows the Belgian is almost indispensable at the moment. The Capital One Cup clash with Middlesbrough, who conceded for the first time in seven matches at the Riverside, demonstrated that Lukaku’s flourishing understanding with Gerard Deulofeu (FantasyBet 6.5m, PremierPunt Forward 9.5m) has even made doubling-up on the Toffees’ attacking assets against Crystal Palace an enticing option.

Poundstretchers

Aston Villa have scored just once in their last three away trips, so investment in Southampton’s defence looks to offer value this weekend – in spite of this evening’s 6-1 home hammering at the hands of Liverpool. The cheapest route into the Saints backline is keeper Maarten Stekelenburg (FantasyBet 5m, PremierPunt 7.8m), who has made 12 saves over the last four Gameweeks.

Watford have been defensively impressive in front of their own fans this season, keeping four clean sheets in seven home encounters. Given that only Arsenal, Manchester United and Palace have scored at Vicarage Road, visitors Norwich could struggle to make a breakthrough and we call upon Nathan Ake (FantasyBet 4.5m, PremierPunt 6.4m) as our preferred pick – the left-back gets forward more than the other Hornets defenders and picked up an assist in the recent home clash with West Ham.

Arsenal’s injury crisis could see Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (FantasyBet 6m, PremierPunt 8.4m) handed a start at home to Sunderland this weekend. With Mesut Ozil in such fine form, the former Southampton wide man could get amongst the points if the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Santi Cazorla are indeed ruled out. Another budget friendly midfielder from a top-team is Dele Alli (FantasyBet 5m, PremierPunt 7.3m). Back in contention for Tottenham’s trip to West Brom after serving a one-match suspension last weekend, he offers a cut-price route into an attack that had scored thirteen times in the last four Gameweeks.

It’s difficult to look past Watford for cut-price forward options. We highlighted Odion Ighalo’s (FantasyBet 5m, PremierPunt 8m) record last week and the Nigerian duly delivered with a goal and an assist. Strike partner Troy Deeney (FantasyBet 5.5m, PremierPunt 8m) has quietly been on a scoring run himself and, having netted in four in the last five, he offers an in-form option for the visit of Norwich.

These are the contenders for my weekly contest lineups heading into the weekend. I’ll return on Friday with a further assessment of this week’s partner games – FantasyBet and Premier Punt, as I continue my quest for profit in the 2015/16 campaign.

Random question for the United fans:

If (for whatever reason) we had the opportunity to do a straight swap between Rooney and Stones, would you do it (maybe even if it required another £10-15m on our part)?

I guess you can look at it two ways.
Do we need Stones defensively right now. no
But if we look at handing Roo over to sure up a Smalling and Stones partnership for the next 5+ years, then yes.

We're effed going forward unless LvfG changes the way we play.

Everton wont pay Roo's wages, and he's not taking a pay cut.

Stones is on his way to being class though and there is the added benefit of the chemistry they would quickly build as the likely England CB pairing by playing side by side week in and out for club and country.

I am not a Utd fan so hope you don't mind my intrusion but I think what you are toying with here is Rooney's regression.

He has regressed. Will he elevate again? I don't think so.

      Yes.

While Fergie said he would have sold Rooney by 2015 just recently, I'm of the opinion he would have sold him the summer of 2012/13 had he not retired.

Well if you consider that Stones is in fact probably worth around £35-£40m, you would be hard-pressed to find someone willing to take Rooney even at £30m given the wage demands he brings with him.

Yes. Rooney is obviously on the way down, Stones is an excellent talent who would complement Smalling brilliantly.

I would think Rooney might have a future for us in the midfield. Next season would love to see him play a few games alongside Schneiderlin. Having said that Stones is class.

Disagree. Rooney is a lost cause at this point, he has regressed too much. Poor touch, poor short passing, poor snap finishing.

By playing anywhere he is forcing a better player to the bench.

I have a gut feeling about Alli this gw, however, it means benching a heavy hitter.

    KDB Barkley Ozil Hazard Alli
    Vardy Lukaku Aguero

    Who do I bench??

I'm benching Alli over Ritchie at this point but I have the same feeling as you and thus cannot give a good answer. In your case my best suggestion would be Vardy

Was nailed on Coutinho before this but he's not exactly fit as yet. Also Liv has abundance in Attack options who are fighting for only 3 slots up front.

Am giving hazard a chance to provide his worth this month before alexis recovers from his hammy

Based on what I've seen from his displays against Norwich and Spurs, Chelsea is definitely closer to finding their mojo and bou with a third choice keeper could be their remedy

Lallana looks shattered. Have you seen the post match interview with him? Been playing well though...definitely deserves a place over Firmino. Reason I went with Benteke is that if Sturridge is fit Klopp will be tempted to use that diamond formation again.

It's so tough to predict - Klopp has used so many different formations / variations in the last few weeks. Not sure he fully trusts Benteke yet - whereas he loves Firmino, and after tonight, Sturridge.

Any advice on what to do with this back line this week?

    Butland (mci) [McCarthy]
VVD (AVL) Kolarov (sto) Rojo (WHM) [Dawson Darmian]

    A. McCarthy --> DDG (WHM) (but it feels like a waste to spend 10+ for the 2 keepers)

    C. Darmian --> Moreno (new)

Set pieces definitely have potential - it may be my imagination but he doesn't seem to be playing as far forward as last year though. Not someone I'll be picking up until he starts to deliver

      Spurs fan here.

With the emergence of Alli and the renaissance of Dembele, he is playing a lot wider of late. Still very effective, but less chance of goals.

People always go on about how good his set piece delivery is but his corners are generally woeful!

Evening all, sorry for repost - current team:

    Butland / Hennessy
    Rose / Berty / Kelly / Carthcart / Rojo
    Sterling / Willian / Ozil / Bolasie / Mahrez
    Lukaku / Kun / Kane

    2 FTs, zero ITB.

    Thinking of doing:
    Willian -> Hazard
    Sterling -> Alli
    Rojo -> Moreno for a -4

What think ye? Coutinho instead of Hazard also an option but unsure he'll play.

    Cheers!

Also have Milner in a draft league, and he always brings home the points through key passes etc. Even on pens if Henderson isn't on the pitch.

Chelsea are looking far better defensively these last couple of fixtures.

    Repost from earlier 🙂

I know this is going to probably feck up the balance of my FPL team, but If I get Hazard:

    Hazard, KDB, Ozil, Mahrez, Surman
    Aguero, Vardy, Ighalo

0.4 ITB (No money to upgrade Ighalo when fixtures turn)

It's a bad idea, isn't it? 🙁 The logical option would be to get Coutinho/Barkley and use the spare cash to upgrade Ighalo. Thoughts?

I like Coutinho over haz anyway, but I'm not sure you need to worry about these issues. For one thing Ighalo is a bargain whatever his fixtures and can score vs anyone. I'll be in no hurry to remove him.

Even if you do want to remove him or anyone else, it takes 2 transfers. No big deal.

Yes exactly. It is either Haz, Coutinho, Aguero, Lukaku. I think it is too much of a risk to put it on Tadic.

If we look closely though, the front 3 dont have the best of fixture to captain either. Palace is strong, Stoke away for Aguero, Kane to WBA.

Mahrez away, Coutinho (doubt) away to Newcastle. Leaves you really between Hazard and Tadic.

But as mentioned, of course either one of them can explode.

Don't know whether to keep/save my transfer...

      Front 8 of:

      Sterling/Barkley/Mahrez/Ozil/Firmino
      Lukaku/Kane/Deeney

Really want a Chelsea player in there but don't know who.. had Willian 4/5 weeks ago for the 3 GW where he got a decent score and then got rid for Barkley and thankfully he hasn't done much since then. Also don't know who I should get rid of - Sterling looks obvious choice but then I have no City coverage at all. £1.3m in bank

I also already have a benching headache as it is. Gone with Barkley atm because I've got Lukaku and Crystal Palace are best team that my players face. But with 2 double point hauls he's just got me it could be a bad decision!

Wow, just seen the score in the LIV game. Getting some attacking coverage seems sensible, but who is the best pick from their midfield (I'm looking at Sanchez replacements)?

    A) Coutinho - is he fit, and if so will he walk straight back in to a team that just won 6-1 against a usually solid SOT?

    B) Firminho - will he start?

    C) Forget Liverpool assets and get on of Ozil/Hazard/KDB
