We take our regular trip to the Weekly Shop this evening, assessing the player lists of our partner games to pinpoint the likely targets that will make up our weekend lineups.

The player analysis is split into two sections: I’ll break down the key targets that no squad can do without in “Better Buys”, before seeking out those one-shot “Poundstretcher” prospects that can provide us points, whilst freeing up funds.

For this week’s selection, we’re scanning the players lists in our two partner games – FantasyBet and Premier Punt.

Better Buys

In six league matches at Old Trafford this season, United have conceded just once and Louis Van Gaal’s defence looks set to continue that resilient run with the visit of a blunted West Ham. David De Gea (FantasyBet 5.5m, PremierPunt 8.2m) is certain to start and requires less outlay than the Red Devils’ only other guaranteed backline regular Chris Smalling (FantasyBet 6m, PremierPunt 9.5m).

Against Swansea, Liverpool picked up a second clean sheet in six league outings under Jurgen Klopp last weekend. After selecting Alberto Moreno (FantasyBet 5m, PremierPunt 7m) in the Poundstretchers category, we hand the Spaniard a promotion this time around on the back of his maximum bonus haul against Garry Monk’s men. With a trip to struggling Newcastle up next, Moreno’s raids down the flank could finally come to fruition as he looks to add to a single assist so far.

Sadio Mane (FantasyBet 8m, PremierPunt 11.6m) looked lively in the defeat at the Etihad and created the Saints’ consolation in a 3-1 loss. The Senegalese midfielder has three goals and six assists this season and, having netted against Liverpool this evening, may well add to that tally with Aston Villa visiting St Mary’s. Dusan Tadic (FantasyBet 7m, PremierPunt 10.4m) is a viable alternative – the Serb comes in cheaper than his team-mate and is currently leading on overall points.

Romelu Lukaku (FantasyBet 8m, PremierPunt 12.1m) has been labelled as inconsistent in the past but five goals in four shows the Belgian is almost indispensable at the moment. The Capital One Cup clash with Middlesbrough, who conceded for the first time in seven matches at the Riverside, demonstrated that Lukaku’s flourishing understanding with Gerard Deulofeu (FantasyBet 6.5m, PremierPunt Forward 9.5m) has even made doubling-up on the Toffees’ attacking assets against Crystal Palace an enticing option.

Poundstretchers

Aston Villa have scored just once in their last three away trips, so investment in Southampton’s defence looks to offer value this weekend – in spite of this evening’s 6-1 home hammering at the hands of Liverpool. The cheapest route into the Saints backline is keeper Maarten Stekelenburg (FantasyBet 5m, PremierPunt 7.8m), who has made 12 saves over the last four Gameweeks.

Watford have been defensively impressive in front of their own fans this season, keeping four clean sheets in seven home encounters. Given that only Arsenal, Manchester United and Palace have scored at Vicarage Road, visitors Norwich could struggle to make a breakthrough and we call upon Nathan Ake (FantasyBet 4.5m, PremierPunt 6.4m) as our preferred pick – the left-back gets forward more than the other Hornets defenders and picked up an assist in the recent home clash with West Ham.

Arsenal’s injury crisis could see Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (FantasyBet 6m, PremierPunt 8.4m) handed a start at home to Sunderland this weekend. With Mesut Ozil in such fine form, the former Southampton wide man could get amongst the points if the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Santi Cazorla are indeed ruled out. Another budget friendly midfielder from a top-team is Dele Alli (FantasyBet 5m, PremierPunt 7.3m). Back in contention for Tottenham’s trip to West Brom after serving a one-match suspension last weekend, he offers a cut-price route into an attack that had scored thirteen times in the last four Gameweeks.

It’s difficult to look past Watford for cut-price forward options. We highlighted Odion Ighalo’s (FantasyBet 5m, PremierPunt 8m) record last week and the Nigerian duly delivered with a goal and an assist. Strike partner Troy Deeney (FantasyBet 5.5m, PremierPunt 8m) has quietly been on a scoring run himself and, having netted in four in the last five, he offers an in-form option for the visit of Norwich.

These are the contenders for my weekly contest lineups heading into the weekend. I’ll return on Friday with a further assessment of this week’s partner games – FantasyBet and Premier Punt, as I continue my quest for profit in the 2015/16 campaign.

    Morning Jinswick

I would say Coutinho is first team. Just a slight doubt for this weekend due to that injury. Im guessing some ppl still waiting what is the regular first eleven gonna be for Liverpool, with all the players coming back into the team, like Sturridge and Hendo. But still feel Coutinho is nailed.

The 4 leakiest defences over the last 4 GWs based on their average ranking in the league for Shots in The Box Conceded and Big Chances Conceded. Essentially, the 4 worst defences in terms of, imo, the two best defensive indicators. If any of your players are up against a team that features on this table, might be a good idea to slap the (C) armband on 'em.

Gets a little too hard to interpret if its too complicated! There aren't that many defensive indicators anyway. 🙂

Think it's between Kane and Coutinho for me too.

Completely agree! Would love to see that stat added, would really help my model as well! I'm sure if we request it they can take a look at getting the addition from Opta...

Bit of a weird exclusion, innit? Such a key stat, find it bit odd tbh.

Where have you gotten your 'SoT conceded' data from, mate? I'm guessing the best places are WhoScored's Opta data & just going through each teams' last four matches, or using Paul Riley's xG chart & counting them up?

I haven't got it! Been trying to account for it through other variables but it really isn't effective.

That could be a good idea, using the Riley's chart or Whoscored.

To be fair shots on target are more dependant on the strikers' quality than the defence. Shots in the box conceded is a better measure by far I reckon

Both are near equal metrics, the differences aren't so black & white imo. There are many variablez to consider, which is what goes into an xG model.

Before that game, Demi and Mangala had played two games together, both instances where Demi subbed on with 10 minutes left.

On top of that Mangala hadn't played in a month for City before Liverpool and Demi hadn't started for a month.

                But yes, bias. 😉

What about the midfield pairing? The full-backs? Surely there are other key deadball scenarios & midfield battles that take place in a match, no? Pele plays in a hardwired system, I don't think the CB dilemma is enough of an excuse to takeaway from the thrashing they got. Sure, Otamendi should have played & sure the CB pairing wasn't ideal, but there's a bigger picture at play here.
                  .
Truth of the matter is that Liverpool rightly deserved that win with the brilliant chemistry between Firmino & Coutinho who decimated Sagna & Kolarov as well. The win was largely due to defensive errors in their midfield with Klopp's press clasping down on the half-spaces & forcing Hart to kicking the ball to 50/50 spots in midfield. Neither Yaya nor Fernandinho could cope with the pressing of Milner & Can, leaving the majority of the possession to Liverpool.

The gegenpress was key for both the defensive game & as a key weapon in attack. Firmino was dropping deep as the false 9 & pulled the City defense up the pitch, which left clear holes in their backline for Lallana & Coutinho to exploit down the flanks.

But sure, it was all down to Demi & Mangala 😉
                  ;

                    Goal 1 https://streamable.com/62fv:
Good win by Coutinho off Sagna, horrible defending by Mangala to stay with Firmino, his only job. Own goal.

                    Goal 2 https://streamable.com/rqha:
Terrible header by Demi, mistake by Sagna to stop following Coutinho.

                    Goal 3 https://streamable.com/aokj:
Zero awareness by Mangala that Firmino is making the run in, maybe a communication problem. Poor nonetheless.

Nothing to be done about the fourth goal, just a great finish.

Obviously there are 10 players on the pitch and it's not ALL down on Demi and Mangala, but they made some very very fundamental errors.

I think it partially points to a bit of fortune honestly and some resolute last-ditch defending instead of effective pressing and interceptions. Especially when compared with the fact that they have the 4th most conceded chances.

Getting his replacement. Losing 0.1M is fine but another 0.1 is a bit too much. Thinking Coutinho, Silva or Hazard. Probably going with Silva though. There is always the chance Coutinho might not start and City are a very potent team in terms of goals. It also helps burden the pain if Kun goes mental.

Even if Coutinho is deemed fit there's not a guarantee he'll start. Klopp has been very unpredictable regarding lineups. And he really wants his starting XI to be fully fit (no knocks, full training). Silva's a guarantee starter for City which is nice.

I want Coutinho but am not prepared to gamble on his fitness for the sake of 0.1.

Him, Haz and Silva are all good options I think so I'm picking Cout because my mini league rivals all have him (I am leading) and his cheaper price enables me to strengthen elsewhere.

Stating the bleeding obvious here but the injury to Sanchez is annoying. I felt like he was about to punish premature sellers and obviously had great fixtures upcoming.

Not to mention it seemed like he was limping a bit as he walked off (I don't think that's his natural gait).

Klopp's been pushing him lately through his injuries though. He's trying to get Sturridge past that psychological fear he has.

Some people are injury-prone though, it's very much a physiological thing. Yes there is a psychological element but Klopp risks ruining him for longer-term.

    Morning DZ,

Assuming Cout is passed fit for the w/e, who would you go for as a Sanchez replacement?

    A) Cout - LIV are on fire, he is nailed and on form, and NEW are dire.

    B) KDB - City are free scoring and he is on form

    C) Hazard - On pens and best fixtures of the 3. Player and team are however out of form.

    Sanchez, Barkley, Mahrez, Bolasie, Surman
    Aguero, Kane, Lukaku

      Morning Jinswick,

Curious that you aren't considering Ozil - what's your thinking there?

I worry for us at the moment. No Santi, Sanchez or Walcott, the team is out of form (2 wins in 7), has a must win game in midweek (so can see the likes of Ozil being withdrawn if we are ahead), and BFS will definitely park the bus (he has a decent record against us from memory).

I think we'll likely line up as:

        ----Flamini--Ramsey
        Campbell--Ozil--OAC
        ----------Giroud

I just worry where the goals are coming from. Ramsey could be a flair pick, but he has been out of form for over a year. AOC is just back from injury, and Campbell doesn't look up to it. Ozil is in great form, but I just don't know if he can do it on his own. He needs someone to finish things off. We were awful in the final 30 mins against NOR with the above team.

There is also an element of stubborness on my part for not getting Ozil in ages ago 🙂

    Bellerin, VVD, Kolarov
    Sanchez*, Mahrez, Barkley, Bolasie

    Hazard?

Being a Chelsea fan, it's surprising how bad the team has been this season, especially when the club kept all key players at the club following last season's success.

There have been notable performance drops from Key Players. Matic, Ivanovic, Fabregas, Costa, Hazard. All have been really poor.

It's worth noting that Hazard's positioning looks to have suffered a lot. He used to create chances for himself, or get into really good positions to create chances for Costa. It doesn't look that way at all this season (yet).

There were glimpses of him being back to what he did best against Norwich, but Costa was in no mood. If Mourinho keeps dropping Costa and plays Hazard upfront, I don't think he is gooing to do a hell lot cause he doesn't prefer that role at all. Maybe Remy is the answer for short term. But unless I see some big improvements, I just don't think Chelsea would be able to do a lot upfront.

I don't think so, no. I'd blame the pre season for this. The games arranged and the transfer window especially. They hardly looked fit. Costa and Hazard were overweight. The amount of points we lost in the beginning, the players much have panicked. Everyone did. And now they were just playing with low confidence, cause everything was going against us literally.

Thoughts on Haz as a prospect for your next 4 AK? Getting him in this week.

The fixtures are really good. But the attack seems very disjointed Acqua. I might join you, but his ownership isn't very high in the game as opposed to Barkley (33%) and Coutinho (22%).

There's also the whole story revolving around Costa, I don't think I fancy Hazard upfront, he likes to run at the defences and playing upfront takes that away from him. I do believe we'll see either Costa or Remy this week. In which case, Hazard could run riot.

It really depends on you. The fixtures are there, the temptation is there, he seems to be sharp again.

      Willian

Look at it this way, Willian has got returns in 4 games & never has he scored more than 8 points.
Mahrez has got returns in 9 games with double pointers in 6 of them.

Willian has got a total of 5 bonus points as compared to 22 with Mahrez

Fixtures are the only argument, but Swansea are struggling. Hence - play Mahrez

That's understandable. I am fighting with myself over 0.1 value. I think Sanchez will go down tonight. Either I can get Cout now and pocket the 0.1 or let the 0.1 drop and listen to the presser. I do think he will be fit, I juts want to know if Klopp's reasons for benching Coutinho are the same as I mentioned.
