In every season Fantasy Football has many frustrating moments when your transfers backfire. The statistics deceive us or plain old bad luck leads to clever decisions being trampled all over by a mini-league rival’s seemingly ill-advised pick. It is tempting to deal with these events by taking multiple point hits to bring in short-lived bandwagons, but that often ends up ruining your team structure and composition. Here I detail an interesting challenge for those in the Fantasy doldrums to hopefully bring some Christmas cheer.

To remind ourselves that the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is a marathon, not a sprint, I usually try to set targets in terms of overall rank for stages in the season. In the last couple of years, my strategy has been :

Stage I : Stabilize inside top 50k by December 1st by taking some punts while building team value.

Stage II : Push into top 10k (for at least 1 Gameweek) before New Year’s, by exploiting the festive fixture pile-up and casuals’ low awareness of deadlines/transfers at this time.

Stage III : Defend position in the lead up to double Gameweeks in Gameweeks 30-34 by making sure all the explosive heavily owned players are in your team without taking multiple hits.

Stage IV : Finish on a high, in top 1k by May.

Now a lot has been said about how this season has been an absolute train-wreck for so many good FPL managers. Those with a strong history like Mark, Jonty, Innsie, Triggerlips (just to mention a few) are stuck in the doldrums with 200k-500k ranks. With this in mind, I’ve torn up my target projections from pre-season, and have now gone for :

Stage I : Settle for staying within top 500k (or even 1 million) by December 1st – any six-figure rank will do at the moment.

Stage II : Push into top 100k by New Year’s by exploiting the  festive fixture pile-up.

Stage III : Attack by gambling on the Double Gameweeks by using Bench Boost, Triple Captain or Wildcard chips to get into top 50k.

Stage IV : Finish – Aim for top 10k by May.

To motivate Stage II in this marathon, and give us something to cheer for during the holiday Gameweeks, I’d like to set up a small Community Challenge called the “Festive 100k”.

The aim is to get into the Top 100k by New Year’s Day’s fixtures (Gameweek 20 this year). That gives us five more Gameweeks!

Note that this is not going to be a separate mini-league. For the next five Gameweeks, please use the comment thread in this article to track progress and whether Christmas will bring a rise or fall in the rankings. Good luck, and see you on the other side of 100k.

Currently in Stage two of the original plan, with a rank of 38,117. I just need to sort out Danny Sturridge and the rest seems plain sailing 😎 #SetUpForTheFall

My goal for this year was ending in the top 10k. Although it has to be noted that this is my 4th complete season and my highest rank at the end of the season is 15k, so for me this challenge will be even more difficult. Currently around the 800k mark :(, guess I'm doing some things wrong

    I'm a woeful 831,473.
Aguero captaining every gameweek will be my only hope I think.

I'm seeing how Stage 2 can happen.
You're confident that a push over christmas will help. Is this because a lot of managers take their eye off the ball and get caught with week benches?

Is it better not to punt and concentrate on having 15 strong players (although I have no fires to put out).

Yep there are two ways stage 2 can happen : the first is like you said, many managers will take their eye of the ball during christmas, and the second is what Fusen has shown two posts below : "this season is RIDICULOUSLY close for ranking from 50k up to 400k and it won't actually be that surprising if people improve their ranking a lot over christmas"

          Total Transfers : 27

          Total Points Hits : 56

          Total Auto Subs : 4

Total Auto Subs Points : 8

Total Immediate Points Gained from Transfers : 26

You've been shooting yourself in the feet repeatedly with your point hits.

You fit in a similar scenario as I mentioned below, you were on the right track with gameweek 8 and but then gameweeks 9-12, mixed with point hits that didn't work, it completely went backwards for you and you started dropping like a stone

It's interesting looking at the season overview of "oldschool" FPL users who have done well before but haven't this season.

I'm currently 13k, was at 11k last week but captained Kane this week which probably stopped be from getting into the top 10k, but looking at my season, it all hinged on the game weeks 8 onwards.

Most users of this site in gameweek 8 captained ageuro and got a huge score, this moved me from 433k to 29k and since then I've stayed within the top 50k, where as if I compare this to Jonty (quickest FPL ID I could find from the list in the article), he also scored high and went from 590k to 146k but then gameweek 10, 11, and 12 had fairly bad gameweek scores that completely undid the good work of gameweek 8.

Looking at the teams we both fielded for those gameweeks shows there actually really isn't much in it. It's literally sort of 1 cleansheet here or one midfielder scoring there that swing it for us both in different directions.

This sort of backs up what you'll see when looking at "points to X rank" for Jonty (self-plug but shows what I'm talking about - http://www.anewpla.net/fpl/)

    Rank 49,996 : -46
    Rank 99,878 : -29
    Rank 249,246 : -1

So he's say 2 good gameweeks away from 50k (getting 20 points above the average isn't that rare).

I'm going to find the IDs for the other players mentioned in the article and check their season graphs on my site later when I'm not at work not doing work to see if they fit the same mold.

tl;dr - this season is RIDICULOUSLY close for ranking from 50k up to 400k and it won't actually be that surprising if people improve their ranking a lot over christmas

      Blimey, I feel violated. 😉

Good research. those bad weeks were indeed odd as I looked at my team and each week I was one captaincy and one good player away from a big haul. Spent some hits since then to sort myself out and its paid off.

Problem for me was abandoning the fifth mid...meant I had bench decisions and guess what - I got them all wrong during that time with Mahrez among those on the bench.

I am at 588k OR. My hopes of a 10k finish haven't crashed yet. I am still hoping and would probably still be hoping if this month was February instead of December.

Would love to have a few insights though, I do remember Acqua being one of those that had a horrible rank in the first half of the season, but really pushed on and finished really high at the end
