Im Not Marshal Foch Im Not Marshal Foch
Share:

If ever a game summed up a player, surely Sunday’s match between West Brom and Manchester City showed us all the two sides of City’s prodigious striker Mario Balotelli. The Italian rewarded the faith of his manager with two goals in six minutes in only his second start in the Premier League. Unfortunately for Mancini, Balotelli made the transformation from hero to villain with a straight red card in the second-half for a reckless kick during a tangle with Youssouf Mulumbu.

Todays dismissal highlighted Balotelli’s addiction to controversy and for Fantasy Football Managers was the equivalent of an espresso at the end of a drunken meal. Certainly it would have made many managers wary of bringing in a striker who, whilst has obvious talent, still has a hot headed fieriness. Temperamental players are the last thing the majority of Fantasy Football managers want or need.

This game and the display of Balotelli served to ease the pressure which had been building on manager Roberto Mancini who has been looking to stop a run in which had City lost their last three games. Mancini was clearly happy with his strikers performance;

“For me, Mario Balotelli played very well. The referee should not have given a red card, absolutely not. It’s possible we may appeal.”

That will be promising to the ears of those who are looking to bring in the fiery Italian. However it is worth remembering that frivolous appeals can often lead to extended cautions so City, and FPL’s finest will need to tread carefully.

The inclusion of the Italian saw James Milner dropped to the bench and increased the rotation risk around the Manchester City team. From an attacking perspective it is nearly impossible to determine the line-up for the Citizens and going forward investment in Manchester City midfielders and attackers, bar talismanic captain Carlos Tevez, is becoming more of a minefield. Caution and patience is recommended.

Unfortunately this is not something that 1,282 managers displayed this afternoon. That is the amount (and rising at time of writing) who knee-jerkingly transferred in Balotelli today. A large number of those did so during the game. If ever there was a test case in why you shouldn’t do your transfers early then this was it.

-Elsewhere Liverpool overcame champions Chelsea with a first half performance from Fernando Torres which reminded us all why he is so revered throughout the world. Two goals, the second a sublime curling effort, proved too much for Chelsea at Anfield and served to open up the title race. It also exposed how Chelsea struggle without their big hitters Lampard, Essien and Drogba. It was no coincidence that their performance improved in the second half with the introduction of the Ivorian, but for those who have the big striker in their team, a single point was a disappointing return.

Overall this week served up its fair share of headaches, underperformance of key players and low scores across the board. Thankfully we only have two days before the next Gameweek comes along.

    Ok so quick question guys;

    Chamakh-->K.Jones
    Bale-->Arteta/Cahill

    Worth 4pt hit? (I'd like to do the Chamakh transfer this week i think)

      First one seems ok, since Chamakh may well be rotated.

      Would wait with Bale, home against sunderland. I'm shipping him out after that, if he fails there.

        I've been waiting for the past 4 weeks!? But dammit you are right. If i see one more CL awesome performance inbetween 2pt-ers i'm gonna crack.

        Is it just that European teams don't mark him or that English teams shut him down more?

    For all those playing the Oz Sportal game.

    Up to 12th(main team) & 37th overall with my TM team. Best scorer in the league was Evs by a mile.
    We have 4 members in the top 200 overall. Olive & myself(37th), PDM Allstars(72nd) & Dick Fran Dyke (182nd).
    Biggest price risers this week were Nolan, Ridgewell & Torres who all went up over 1.7 million each.
    Biggest fallers were Walcott, Kranjcar & Fabregas who dropped over 1.4 million each.

    Sorry for the repost! Need a few more ideas on this one:

    I thought of a few transfers last night:

    Foster / Harper
    Jara / Toure / Konchesky / Elmo / Seamus
    Arteta / Nasri / Barton / Adam / Malouda
    Berba / Chamakh / Drogba

    Berba > Carroll
    Chamakh > Piquionne
    ? mid > Gerrard

    I am wondering whether these are good moves and which mid to swap?

              I'm sick of Berbs myself which is why I said Berbs-Carrol as its probably the move I'm going to make.
              I put the kiss of death on him getting him in after his hatrick, for Carrol! Felt it worked for a time as Carrol went off the boil but turned out to be a mistake given Carrol's price and potential for assists and BP.

              I'd be sick of having Chamakh too but I'm also wary of taking hits as I've tried it twice this season and I would have made more points leaving it rather than forcing it by taking hits.

              I think a balance is required.

    1) Nasri -> VDV
    2) Nolan -> Nani

    (Would leave a pretty tasty midfield of VDV, Fabs, Malouda, Nani, Arteta!)

    Just looking up on the leading goal scorer in EPL.
    Found some interesting stats about when they score for people who like a bet.

    Player 1st Half/2nd Half
    Malouda 6/1
    Tevez 2/5
    Nolan 5/2
    Bent & Berbatov 2/4
    Kalou 2/3
    Elmander & Carroll 1/4
    Dempsey & Walcott 3/1
    Cahill, Nasri, VDV & Nani 2/2

    Plenty of Home/Away Goals & 1st & Last scorer too. Interesting stuff for your bench options.

      I think for under 6 you simply cant do better, and you need cheap players if you're going to have the Drogba's and Tevez's. He really doesnt look like slowing down anytime soon, and is virtually guaranteed a spot in a Newcastle side that is scoring many many goals.

        Fact is that this season has proven that the likes of Obinna, Dembele, Arteta and Chamack have not lived up to their prospects and I will for once put my betting on the one that actually is scoring now, not the one that is "do a goal".

    So O'Shea played, that was good, but was it a one off, or can we assume he will play again?

      He will play again, of course, but CLEARLY not every week. I cant stand rotation risks, since when injuries strike you need to be sure of the rest of your team playing.

      Vidic is the only Man U defender worth having - Evra is overpriced

        Yeah thats what I'm afraid of. A 5.5m defender needs to play every week

    Why the bloody hell hasn't Silva got an assist yet? You can hardly get him and Yaya mixed up!

    Dear Ancelottery,

    Please can be so kind as to announce your starting 11 for wednesdays game with Fulhan before 19:30 on Tuesday 7th November 2010, as I'm interested in captaining one of your players (not Drogba or Malouda)

    Kind regards,

    Goose.

        I'd take a 12 pointer to get rid of him.

          Just like I was told about you TM, giving bad advice on purpose, non-linked team, slagging everyone off about spelling etc. Typical Aussie, how's the cricket team going??

    Got 2 freebies & trying to work out my options. With Brum's run of fixtures Carr has to go but the 2nd transfer is less obvious.

    1st transfer would be Carr>Enrique (although I'm £0.1M short)

    So options of 2nd transfer:
    a) Hernandez>Piquionne
    b) Nani/Bale/VdV
    c) Change a keeper
    or
    d) Elmo>Enrique only & save 2nd transfer for GW13

    Hahnemann Foster
    Carr Elmo Jones Knight Coleman
    Malouda Nani Arteta Nani N'Zogbia
    Drogba Carroll Hernandez £0.0M

      Hernandez seems to be the only weak link in your team.
