Once again, we roll out our pre-Gameweek members article this lunchtime, as we assess the leading captaincy contenders for the weekend ahead. We take a three-part approach that includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

For the first time this season, Mesut Ozil (26%) boasts the strongest backing in our Captain Poll. The former Real Madrid playmaker has just two goals to his name this term, but the unparalleled consistency of his creative output (13 assists in 12 outings) renders him a reliable source of Fantasy returns. Those managers bestowing Ozil the armband are banking on Arsenal rebounding from their heavy defeat at Southampton last Gameweek.

By virtue of the Gunners’ favourable home match-up against Bournemouth, Olivier Giroud (7%) is also among the top five captaincy selections. The France international came up short at St Mary’s Stadium but lays claim to seven goals in 10 starts. Aaron Ramsey (two goals in four) sits one place back with a 4% backing, while Theo Walcott (one goal in two) enjoys 2% of the vote.

Romelu Lukaku scoops 14% of the vote as Everton square up to Stoke City at Goodison Park. The ex-Chelsea recruit has drawn just three blanks since Gameweek 7 but could struggle to breach a Potters rearguard that’s recorded eight clean sheets in the past 11 Gameweeks.

Harry Kane’s brace against Norwich City convinced 13% of voters to give him the nod ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s trip to Watford. Spurs haven’t lost on their travels since the opening Gameweek of the season and tallied nine goals in their previous four away matches, which bodes well for the Englishman’s attacking prospects.

Sergio Aguero (8%) missed out against Sunderland but is expected to be “100% fit” for Manchester City’s trip to Leicester. The Argentine has been hamstrung by injuries this term but is more than capable of producing explosive returns in limited pitch time. Fresh from his 16-point haul (one goal, two assists) against the Black Cats, Kevin De Bruyne (5%) bolsters the Sky Blues’ representation on the leaderboard.

Odion Ighalo and Philippe Coutinho both secured 2% of the vote. The former faces a tough home match-up against Spurs but has already delivered the goods against Everton, Liverpool and Chelsea in his debut top-flight season. The latter has drawn three blanks on the trot but will fancy his chances against a Sunderland defence that ranks top for goals conceded (37).

Somewhat surprisingly, Riyad Mahrez has been selected to by just 2% of voters for the home clash against a City side that’s earned just two points from their last five away matches. The Algerian has already produced four sets of double-figures in front of his own fans ahead of Tuesday evening’s encounter.

I couldn't pick who to bench this week so despite the risk of rotation I'm playing my AOA chip with the below.

    Butland
    Moreno, Bellerin
Mahrez, Ozil, Ramsey (C), KDB, Coutinho
    Ighalo, Lukaku, Kane

    Ruddy, Dawson, Toby, Oxford

I have a 100pt cushion at the top of my ML so fancy a bit of a gamble, hope it works out.

Reposting a comment from football365. (not mine)

A fix for LVG as I see it.

        1. Stop using Fellaini as your problem solver. You played him at CM vs Wolfsburg, Bournemouth and Norwich all games you lost. Against Wolfsburg you left Carrick on the bench for Fellaini, and in the other 2 Schneiderlin for Fellaini. How does that even make tactical sense? Then against Stoke you again use him as your number 10/9, why why why? What in your mind makes sense that a CM pairing of Carrick and Fellaini is better than Carrick and Schneiderlin? Or against Wolfsburg, Schweini and Carrick? What has Fellaini ever showed that gives you the idea that he can be that guy for United???? Or that he is a better CM than Schweinsteiger, Carrick and Schneiderlin? On what planet????

        2. You keep talking about balance in the team. But for how long have you unbalanced the team by playing Mata out of position at RW? You then bench Darmian because he was unable to cope with having to do ALL the attacking down the wing, as well as defend against both the oppositions LB and LW. You play Martial our best striker as a winger. You have Young playing RB when we have defenders available. You have Fellaini playing everywhere up the spine of the team? The list goes on and on....

        3. Martial arrived at OT, and immediately looked like the striker we have been waiting for. Your answer to that is to put him out wide on the wing, and along with that kill his form 😐

        4. Every time you change a lineup, you fix one thing and then break another two. Example - Martial is playing RW, you then move him to striker, but you put Fellaini behind him who will do nothing to support him. Varela has been fantastic since given his opportunity. But you bench him to play Ashley Young at RB? Why? Why don't you play Varela at RB and Young infront of him until Lingard gets back? Some of your mistakes are glaring obvious. Why can you and none of your team see it? Another example was when Rooney was injured. You moved Mata to 10, played another winger. But then you play Fellaini at CM?

        5. Did you perhaps notice that the horrendous run offer results started when turned to Fellaini against Wolfsburg, and then again vs Bournemouth and then again and again.....United were boring going forward, because they can only attack down the left at pace. But the defence was tight, until you decided that Fellaini is Yaya Toure?
