The Knee Jerk

The concept of a player being fixture proof in Fantasy football is a much discussed topic around these parts. Wayne Rooney put forward a strong case a few gameweeks back, defying United’s tricky opening to the season with a points tally that left all but Sergio Aguero in his wake. Today, Robin Van Persie perhaps presented even stronger evidence that, when a player has talent and form, no opposition can stand in their way.

Van Persie is certainly a force of nature right now. Seven goals in his last three games have propelled him to the top of every Fantasy manager’s most wanted list. The Dutchman, along with Rooney and Aguero, have all enjoyed devastating spells of form this season. Any Fantasy manager who has failed to catch at least one of them, surely finds themselves floundering.

Ironically, it’s Wayne Rooney who has been hugely overshadowed by Van Persie’s recent returns. Today at Goodison, Rooney dropped alarmingly deep, as Alex Ferguson charged Danny Welback and Javier Hernandez to push on. In Fantasy terms, certainly as far as our own ICT Index is concerned, Rooney suffered his least effective 90 minutes of the season – the numbers are there – our Members can see for themselves.

Van Persie meanwhile, made a mockery of the fixture list which told us that a trip to Chelsea would pose him problems; that perhaps he couldn’t maintain his recent form at Stamford Bridge. Friday night’s decision to go with Van Persie over Sergio Aguero in the Scout Picks wasn’t taken lightly. We suspected that the Chelsea defence would be unable to keep the Dutchman at bay. Nobody could have predicted the havoc he would cause, the delicious end product he would deliver.

In three games, Van Persie has returned 36 Fantasy Premier League points – a tally that will surely increase with bonus points on Monday and perhaps the award of an assist for Theo Walcott’s goal. In contrast, Rooney has produced 5 points over the same three gameweeks. When you throw in the captaincy, that’s a big swing and painful reading for those who held Rooney with faith that his undoubted talent and early season form would see him through.

Conveniently, then, that takes us full circle. While Van Persie has done so much today to prove the theory that, with class and form, the opposition is irrelevant, Rooney’s recent returns present strong evidence of the contrary. The matches against Liverpool, City and Everton looked tough for Rooney- five points is certainly proof of that. Another twist in what is rapidly becoming a fascinating Fantasy season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Given Vorm
    Kompany, Bosingwa, Enrique, Simpson, De Laet
    Silva, VDV, Dyer, Cabaye, Walters
    Rooney, Sturridge, Ade
    3.6 in bank.

    Options are:

    1 – Rooney–>RVP
    2 – Bos & Ade —>Shawcross and RVP/Aguero (-4)
    3 – Bos & Ade —> Walker and RVP/Aguero(-4)
    4 – Bos & Cabaye —>Shawcross and Ramsey/Nani/Mata (-4)
    5 - Bos & Sturridge---> Wilkinson and RVP (-4)
    6 – Given –>Begovic
    7 - Bos-->Jones

    Opinions please?

        yeah, i just need to decide who I want to keep more - Ade or Sturridge. Is Wilkinson going to be a regular? if so I can do Bos-->Wilkinson and get RVP (keeping Ade).

        Or lose Ade for the security of Shawcross, which is what i am inclined to do as i got VDV to cover spurs nice run.

            If RVP rises by 0.2 I cant afford either 2 or 3. BAE could be an alternative to Walker or ShawX, saving money to upgrade De Leat to Wilkinson or Cabaye.

      Tough one. I feel like Aguero could be rested after the champions league game and get 60-70 minutes at the most. Rooney's been horrible but the fixtures are finally picking up. I guess I say hold onto Aguero because he definitely will produce if he plays. Rooney, we don't know...

    It's that time of day again and you know the drill.

    Today the suspension tightrope claimed 2 more victims as both Marouane Fellaini and Gary Caldwell succumbed to their sins and will duly serve 1 match suspensions in GW11 along with Vincent Kompany and Ricardo Gardner who both saw red.
    That's 1 match bans all round. 1 match. Got it?

    The cycle continues though with new faces on the tightrope: Gabby Agbonlahor, Jason Lowe, Brede Hangeland and Gareth Barry all striving to avoid the same fate next week.

                  Debatable, certainly not a clear red but i wouldn't have been surprised if it had been giveb. The irony that STB was there to watch Cech's horror show (and cfctom) after all the De Gea mud slinging is just unbelievably textbook.

                    Yeah, if Cech had been sent off for that I'd have been raging. Not sure how sincere Scezzers is when he says that he should have been sent off.....

                    Didn't expect the ref to send him off, but that didn't stop me screaming at the TV in the bar for him to be sent off. 😉

                    Haha! Not a red? That was the most blatant red I've ever seen! Think about an outfield player doing that, regardless of whether or not he was the last man, he should have been off. Once again, we suffer because of idiot ref decisions. If it's true that over the season these things even themselves out I expect the Champions League trophy in our cabinet come June. Also, I agree that Cech had a poor game, and was at fault for a lot of the goals, but he has shown himself to be quality, this was just a blip, whereas De Gea has consistently been poor. I'm still in shock that we were that open, I think AVB is a double agent.

                    P.S, nice CC draw. 😉 *cough*- fixed *cough*- conspiracy

                    plus it was very out wide, szczesny was sh*tting himself (you see the relief when he looks up to a yellow) but i think there was too much doubt for a red, a yellow or orange

      If you only have the cash for three expensive mids plus an uber cheap one, I'm beginning to think it's best just to pick one and just hope for the best. None of them have really shown any consistent form. I'm trying to shuffle the pack and bring in Sess, Larrson or Drenthe for week 12.
