The Knee Jerk

The concept of a player being fixture proof in Fantasy football is a much discussed topic around these parts. Wayne Rooney put forward a strong case a few gameweeks back, defying United’s tricky opening to the season with a points tally that left all but Sergio Aguero in his wake. Today, Robin Van Persie perhaps presented even stronger evidence that, when a player has talent and form, no opposition can stand in their way.

Van Persie is certainly a force of nature right now. Seven goals in his last three games have propelled him to the top of every Fantasy manager’s most wanted list. The Dutchman, along with Rooney and Aguero, have all enjoyed devastating spells of form this season. Any Fantasy manager who has failed to catch at least one of them, surely finds themselves floundering.

Ironically, it’s Wayne Rooney who has been hugely overshadowed by Van Persie’s recent returns. Today at Goodison, Rooney dropped alarmingly deep, as Alex Ferguson charged Danny Welback and Javier Hernandez to push on. In Fantasy terms, certainly as far as our own ICT Index is concerned, Rooney suffered his least effective 90 minutes of the season – the numbers are there – our Members can see for themselves.

Van Persie meanwhile, made a mockery of the fixture list which told us that a trip to Chelsea would pose him problems; that perhaps he couldn’t maintain his recent form at Stamford Bridge. Friday night’s decision to go with Van Persie over Sergio Aguero in the Scout Picks wasn’t taken lightly. We suspected that the Chelsea defence would be unable to keep the Dutchman at bay. Nobody could have predicted the havoc he would cause, the delicious end product he would deliver.

In three games, Van Persie has returned 36 Fantasy Premier League points – a tally that will surely increase with bonus points on Monday and perhaps the award of an assist for Theo Walcott’s goal. In contrast, Rooney has produced 5 points over the same three gameweeks. When you throw in the captaincy, that’s a big swing and painful reading for those who held Rooney with faith that his undoubted talent and early season form would see him through.

Conveniently, then, that takes us full circle. While Van Persie has done so much today to prove the theory that, with class and form, the opposition is irrelevant, Rooney’s recent returns present strong evidence of the contrary. The matches against Liverpool, City and Everton looked tough for Rooney- five points is certainly proof of that. Another twist in what is rapidly becoming a fascinating Fantasy season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I think I am settled for my next transfer:

Bosingwa out - Jones in. Keeping Kompany and benching him. I got him this week after all.

Obviously not all of you thought a new manager was necessary, but especially to those that had thoughts similar, what do you make of Wenger now?

Should I get Nani or Rooney in for United coverage, in-spite of their form it doesn't feel right going with them considering their next 5 fixtures. What do you guys think?

rooney out of those purely because he should start every game, nani was rotated today and valencia wasn't even on the pitch, nani could well play every other game for the next few games especially with champions league over the next few weeks.

      Sturridge out for Suarez..

Thats me doubled up on United defenders after all they won't play City every week and SAF seems to be taking a very defensive approach to games..

Front line next week of .. RVP - Rooney - Suarez

Any chance you can do the Van Persie transfer tonight to catch his price rise, and leave the rest till after the games tomorrow?

I'd go for the second option personally, but I'm keeping both RVP and Rooney as most people seem to have one or the other. That way im guarenteed a decent differential for most of my rivals. (I do already have VDV though)

Bit apprehensive about rooneys positioning these days. Percentages automatically stacked slightly more against him when hes playing in midfield. If he was lone front man a la 2 yrs ago hed be in there in a heartbeat... Wellbeck& hernandez seem to funnel points away from him now though to justify 12m, when you think ade is avail for 4m less, or sturidge for 6m less? At say 15 points per million, i dont know if i would fancy rooney to score 60-80 points more than those two...

Having said that he could easily prove me wrong if fergie reshuffles the system a bit

    Player Ratings:

Cech- 3 (Worst ever Chelsea performance, should have saved three at least)
Bosingwa- 4 (He is not a defender)
Ivanovic- 4 (Clumsy and not up for it)
Terry- 3 (Not much to say, bad day at the office for JT)
Cole- 3 (His worst ever performance in a Chelsea shirt too)
Ramires- 5 (Stuggled to cope with poor players all around him)
Mikel- 5 (Not a terrible performance but Meireles should have started in his place)
Lampard- 7 (Played well, but his teammates let him down)
Mata- 7 (Same, lacks physicality, but its his debut season in the PL)
    Torres- 2 (...)
Sturridge- 1 (Wasteful and should have scored at least one and assisted too, inconsistent)

All credit to Arsenal but we were terrible. RVP is the best striker in the league.

Are the Mata owners keeping him for now? Before today I was planning on getting Nani in for him but not too sure now. Any advice?

I sodding hate this game. Why oh why did I start the pain all over again by creating a team when I SWORE I wouldn't put myself through it another season.

F*ck off Van Persie & F*ck off Mancini - that is all!!!!

    Adebayor ------> RVP
    Bosingwa -------> Wilkinson

    Too Knee jerky?? 😉
Already have VDV for Spurs coverage. I know Adebayor hasn't played yet but i want RVP before price rise...

Also is Wilkinson nailed on starter 🙂
