The Knee Jerk

The concept of a player being fixture proof in Fantasy football is a much discussed topic around these parts. Wayne Rooney put forward a strong case a few gameweeks back, defying United’s tricky opening to the season with a points tally that left all but Sergio Aguero in his wake. Today, Robin Van Persie perhaps presented even stronger evidence that, when a player has talent and form, no opposition can stand in their way.

Van Persie is certainly a force of nature right now. Seven goals in his last three games have propelled him to the top of every Fantasy manager’s most wanted list. The Dutchman, along with Rooney and Aguero, have all enjoyed devastating spells of form this season. Any Fantasy manager who has failed to catch at least one of them, surely finds themselves floundering.

Ironically, it’s Wayne Rooney who has been hugely overshadowed by Van Persie’s recent returns. Today at Goodison, Rooney dropped alarmingly deep, as Alex Ferguson charged Danny Welback and Javier Hernandez to push on. In Fantasy terms, certainly as far as our own ICT Index is concerned, Rooney suffered his least effective 90 minutes of the season – the numbers are there – our Members can see for themselves.

Van Persie meanwhile, made a mockery of the fixture list which told us that a trip to Chelsea would pose him problems; that perhaps he couldn’t maintain his recent form at Stamford Bridge. Friday night’s decision to go with Van Persie over Sergio Aguero in the Scout Picks wasn’t taken lightly. We suspected that the Chelsea defence would be unable to keep the Dutchman at bay. Nobody could have predicted the havoc he would cause, the delicious end product he would deliver.

In three games, Van Persie has returned 36 Fantasy Premier League points – a tally that will surely increase with bonus points on Monday and perhaps the award of an assist for Theo Walcott’s goal. In contrast, Rooney has produced 5 points over the same three gameweeks. When you throw in the captaincy, that’s a big swing and painful reading for those who held Rooney with faith that his undoubted talent and early season form would see him through.

Conveniently, then, that takes us full circle. While Van Persie has done so much today to prove the theory that, with class and form, the opposition is irrelevant, Rooney’s recent returns present strong evidence of the contrary. The matches against Liverpool, City and Everton looked tough for Rooney- five points is certainly proof of that. Another twist in what is rapidly becoming a fascinating Fantasy season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Can't agree with you there, Ramsey has those sweet over-head-thru-balls like Cesc but as Wenger stated he also has the ability to storm into the box and put goals away. I think my plans mean I'll just miss out on bringing him into my team but he's still a good shout.

Yeah I totally knee jerked. Worth the four point hit, imo. Also, had to choose get rid of Nani to fuel this squad, which is a good idea since he's dropping in price...planning on bringing the lad back in when he starts doing well again.

    Vorm, Ruddy
    Bosingwa, Jenrique, Naylor, Barnett, Simpson
    Silva, VDV, Sess, Tiote
    Aguero Rooney Van Persie

Pretty sure this squad will be unstoppable bar any injuries or suspensions.
Oh. .5 in the bank, top 700 in the USA....and climbing! 😀

    Having a disaster this year....
And in nothing but frustration (and an 8 point hit) now have the following team:

    Given
    Kompany Enrique Wilkinson
    Silva VdV Walters Allen (swa)
    Suarez Aguero RvP

    Ruddy Simpson Orr Moses

    Have I committed FF suicide?!?!

Naw man, you gotta do what you have to do. I've taken four point hits every other week, and they've more than paid off. If you have a good feeling about this, do it. I like it, looks kinda like mine...although I would have waited to get Kompany...

I have to agree, my experience with hits are generally negative. Unless two goals are scored for a mid or forward then you may as well have waited a week, I'd say.

Is United attacking coverage i.e. Rooney a necessity over the next 6 or 7 weeks? Am tempted to just do Kompany to Jones and ignore their attacking options.

If you have RVP I'd say no. Arsenal also have good fixtures (though not as good) and its difficult to get both RVP and Rooney without damaging other parts of your team.

I'm also very tempted to just get Jones in for now (also for Kompany) as I think up to the January wildcard deadline Utd have 4-5 fixtures more than City where I would be confident of backing them for a clean sheet (see my post bottom of last page).

I'm tempted by Kompany to Jones too. Think United will be a lot more conservative for a while and they have the fixtures for cleanies and Jones gets forward. Could be a good shout especially with Smalling out.

I'm seriously considering transfering Suarez out for Rooney after the SWA game.

It really depends whether you play fixtures or form, I tend to play fixtures so will be wanting so MUN coverage over the next few weeks.

That was the original plan but I'm just considering my options. Rooney is just so expensive and I think United will be less gung-ho in the coming weeks. Was contemplating bringing Hernandez as an alternative also. Forgoing Rooney would enable me to upgrade Boyata to someone like Walker. Oh decisions, decisions!

Maybe I didn't phrase that very well but it could be worth a small ammount of research to see if certain teams are more likely to call games off than others. As it's depndent on access to the ground as well as the pitch, there must be some teams where they are more likely to have it called off than others, no?

    Hi guys

Need some opinions on the best replacement for Kompany.
I was thinking ShawX but then I thought Jones and now its Richards.

    Views appreciated.

Jones I'd say. Great run of fixtures where you can play him every game til January and a good chance of offensive points too.

can anyone provide a definitive answer for me - Granville perhaps in your ultimate knowledge?

wanna make a double transfer with a 4 point hit to grab VDV while I can afford
but if that hit will come off my total for October I cant do it

will my October score go down by 4 if it do it or will it come off from the beginning of next week?

hey mate, it wont effect Oct or Nov game months. It will effect your overall point score. Strange i know but i've been using the site to run my work ff league with monthly prize money for the last 4 years

Defo won't be hit. Neither will nov. Just your overall points score will be hit.

      From the rules:

"Any transfer point deductions in the Gameweek before a phase starts won't be deducted from the phase score. For example, any transfers made in Gameweek 3 (preparing for Gameweek 4) won't be deducted from your September score."

A bit vague, but it suggests that your trades might come off the October tally - if I read it right.

In theory, September is weeks 11-13 ... and the gameweek 11 won't begin until the deadline is reached.

Funny, if true - I'd have guessed the opposite.

yeah thats a blow, damn it, if adebayor delivers at least 5 tomorrow im top for October...so a 4 point hit would see him probably needing 9, which is a big ask (if not impossible)

thanks for the help tho Eric, youve always been a source of inspiration 🙂
