Romelu Lukaku nets against City before limping off with an ankle problem. Sergio Aguero lasts the full 90 minutes and supplies an assist in the 2-1 loss at Goodison. Elsewhere, Southampton’s Fraser Forster steps up his recovery and Cesar Azpilicueta is to wear a protective mask after suffering a fractured cheekbone in Chelsea’s win at Palace.

Injury Concerns for Toffees

Everton ran out 2-1 victors in the home leg of their league cup clash against Manchester City, courtesy of goals from Romelu Lukaku and Ramiro Funes Mori. On the playmaking front, Gareth Barry earned a rare assist with the cross for Lukaku’s header.

Somewhat removing the gloss from the scoreline, Lukaku (ankle), Tom Cleverley (calf) and Seamus Coleman (calf) all suffered injuries at Goodison Park. Post match, Roberto Martinez rolled out an update on his injured players:

“We lost Tom Cleverley at half time and had to readjust. Then we lost Romelu with a knock to his ankle, and late on we had to play the last few minutes with 10 men because Seamus and had to come off. Romelu took a knock to his ankle and he will need assessing. I don’t know if he will be available at the weekend [against Dagenham] but I don’t expect anything too serious. With Tom and Seamus, Tom picked up a knock to his calf against Spurs and it flared up at half-time. Seamus is probably the most serious of the three. He has pulled his calf and that type of injury usually takes three or four weeks to fully recover.”

The Scout Says: Although Martinez allayed fears regarding the extent of Lukaku’s ankle complaint, it seems likely that the Toffees boss will rest his star striker from FA Cup duties this weekend to aid his chances of recovery for the Gameweek 21 trip to the Etihad. Frustratingly, this comes at a time where Leicester’s Jamie Vardy is also a doubt for next midweek, essentially leaving question marks over the two most popular forwards in the FPL game, with the pair sitting in 54% and 48% of teams respectively. Coleman’s absence further diminishes our confidence in a Toffees defence that’s struggled to hold up its end of the bargain this term. Aside from chalking up just two shut-outs in their last 14 league match-ups, the Merseysiders rank second for goals conceded (eight) across the last four Gameweeks, having surrendered seven goals in three home fixtures. Last night’s result takes the Toffees one step closer to the Wembley final on February 28 – a scenario that would cancel their Gameweek 27 league clash with Liverpool on the same day. The Reds also have the advantage in their semi-final after winning 1-0 at the Britannia on Tuesday evening, with a cancellation and subsequent reschedule triggering the first double Gameweek of the season.

Navas Strike Not Enough for City

Manuel Pellegrini benched the likes of Joe Hart, Aleksandar Kolarov and Raheem Sterling for City’s trip to Goodison last night. Despite the defeat, the Sky Blues scored a vital away goal through Jesus Navas, who received a slide-rule pass from Sergio Aguero, with the latter’s return to match sharpness highlighted by the fact that he played from start to finish last night. On the injury front, City have more concerns in defence, though, after Eliaquim Mangala was withdrawn at the break because of a hamstring problem.

The Scout Says: Although Aguero failed to find the net, he fired five of City’s 18 attempts last night and his excellent build-up play for Navas’ goal suggests that his sharpness is returning. With doubts over Lukaku and Vardy, the Argentine’s improving form has already seen nearly 40,000 FPL managers to snap up his services this week as City – who rank top for home goals (29) – gear up for four Etihad encounters (EVE, CPL, LEI, TOT) and trips to West Ham and Sunderland in the next six Gameweeks. At the back, it’s fair to say that Mangala has belied his £32 million price tag since a switch from Porto back in 2014, so Martin Demichelis’ reinstatement wouldn’t impact our assessment of a Man City back line that’s notched one clean sheet in eight outings and continues to offer little resilience without their injured captain Vincent Kompany.

Azpilicueta To Wear Protective Mask

Following a kick to the face from Crystal Palace’s Frazier Campbell at Selhurst Park, Cesar Azpilicueta sustained a double fracture of the cheekbone during Chelsea’s 3-0 win last weekend. Although the Spanish full-back has been cleared to play, he’ll be required to wear a protective mask.

The Scout Says: Priced at 5.7, Azpilicueta represents the cheapest secure starter among Chelsea’s back line, given that Kurt Zouma (5.4) is a rotation threat now that Gary Cahill has returned to training. Branislav Ivanovic (6.5) remains the prime pick for those Fantasy managers that aren’t shopping on a budget: despite delivering fewer attacking returns (one goal and an assist) than Azpilicueta this season, the Serbia international has amassed three times as many attempts (18 compared to six), five more shots inside the box (nine to four) and three more key passes (seven to four). The Londoners secured clean sheets in their previous two outings and will fancy their chances of extending that run with four home fixtures (WBA, EVE, MUN, NEW) in the next six, as they belatedly start to show their Fantasy potential under interim boss Guus Hiddink

Forster Returns to Action

In the wake of a nine-month injury layoff, Fraser Forster was part of a Southampton U21 unit that recorded a 1-0 win over Chelsea last night. The English shot-stopper expressed his delight at getting a 90-minute run-out:

“Obviously, a bit rusty, but it was perfect. I’m buzzing to get 90 minutes under my belt – it’s probably been nine-and-a-half months now. I’m just delighted, just to kind of get through it, and the victory makes it that much better. We’ve done everything correctly for the last nine months and not rushed. We’ve done it step by step and that’s how we’ll continue to the end. There’s no rush. I just want to make sure I get it right and when that day comes it will come.”

The Scout Says: As Forster begins to step up his rehabilitation, the clock is ticking for Maarten Stekelenburg and his spell as the Saints’ number one goalkeeper. In truth, the south-coast club’s rearguard has failed to reach the heights it scaled last term, carding just three clean sheets since Gameweek 6. Moreover, Southampton saw their net ripple on just 33 occasions during the last campaign but have already shipped 24 goals this time around. Nonetheless, their mid-priced centre-backs – Jose Fonte and Virgil van Dijk – boast strong attacking statistics (two goals apiece) and could profit from a pair of upcoming home ties (WAT, WBA) before the Saints face back-to-back trips to United and Arsenal.

Liverpool set to recall Ilori

In the face of mounting injuries at the back, Liverpool are set to cancel Tiago Ilori’s season-long loan deal at Aston Villa.

The Scout Says: Given that Dejan Lovren and Kolo Toure picked up problems during Liverpool’s Capital One Cup win over Stoke, and Mamadou Sakho and Martin Skrtel both missed the Britannia encounter through injury, the Reds are facing a crisis in defence ahead of Gameweek 21, which sees league leaders Arsenal roll up to Anfield. As a result, Jurgen Klopp is entertaining the thought of dipping into the January transfer market, but until then Ilori could be tasked with filling the void, given that Lucas Leiva was forced to play at centre-half at the Britannia Stadium. There’s no doubt that the Merseysiders’ concerns at the back will be music to the Gunners’ ears, though, with the appeal of Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud sure to be strengthened if Klopp’s treatment room fails to empty in time for next Wednesday evening.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Differentials rough with the smooth

How successful have you been this season with selecting differentials. Have they brought in the points to steal a march on your rivals? Or have they let you down and left you cursing your decision not to opt for well owned high performing players instead?

For me I’ve been largely poor with my own team – with Bony and Ramsey letting me down in both selection and with the armband. In contrast Ozil, Lukaku and other dull picks have kept me afloat.

Mine have been fairly awful all season and most of it comes down to the third striker spot, never having owned Ighalo or Vardy all season:

      Martial
      Mitrovic
Even Giroud recently hasn't been great
Removing Wilson before his hat trick

The Firmino knee jerk after City was quite bad too. Lots of poor choices this season.

Smooth, McCarthy to Rudd last week
Rough, 87th minute yellow card for time wasting ruined a 10 pointer to be proud of and took him down to a standard 6 pointer and sort of took the difference away

Strangely this season, my attacking differentials like Ramsey/Walcott/Mané have not worked out at all.

On the other hand, my Defensive Differentials like getting Williams 1-week before his run of CSs started recently, carrying Cresswell on my bench and just starting to play him as his run of CSs started, and having Evans instead of Dawson in my team, have worked out golden!

Flip side to this is that defensive differentials do not separate out to enough points to get me ahead of people, attacking differentials do.

However, they have saved my a$$ these last few weeks.

They're differentials no more, but I ran with Vardy and Ighalo as soon as both hit form. Both have been starters for me since GW7, only having to worry about picking one other striker and getting my mids right.
Also in the early part of the season I stuck with Tadic and got his 16 point haul in GW4 before ditching in GW6.

In the last few weeks though my luck has begun to run out, making a poor call on Eriksen - I liked Spurs christmas fixture list, and thought Alli, being so young, might be rested. That was my worst decision all season.

Walcott was bad, Aguero too early was bad. Ighalo and Lukaku I got onboard with before everyone had them which worked. Bolasie has worked for me. Lamela every now and then but overall he hasn't worked. Courtois has been good past couple weeks.

A quick look at my FPL transfer history will reveal the truly horrible time I've had with differentials, but highlights include:

        - dumping Sterling before his hatty.
        - having the foresight to start with Mahrez in GW1, before dumping him for Hazard in GW9.
        - carrying Mane for ages.
        - dumping Butland for de Gea before he got 1000 clean sheets.
        - buying Willian, but swapping him back for Mahrez a few weeks ago.

Well differentials are the main reason that my season is going so bad, here is a list of my differentials from GW 9 till today...i think its poor as it gets.

        Mane, GW 9-15, fix. LEI,LIV,BOU,SUN,STK,MCI,AVL, points : 2,4,3,2,1,5,2

        Ramsey, GW 16-19, fix. AVL,MCI,SOU,BOU, points : 11,2,2,2

        Hazard, GW 15-16, fix. BOU,LEI, points : 2,1

        Wijnaldum, GW 17-18, fix. AVL,EVE, points : 2,2

        Walcot, GW 19-20, fix. BOU,NEW, points : 3,3

So beside Ramseys 11 points everthing else was as poor as it gets. My thoughts are that all those pick were good, they are all great players who had great fixtures but i guess this season is the one when everything that can, will go wrong. Also, among those numbers there are 4-5 failed capitan scores.

Started the season with Wally captain.. thinking he could be the launch pad.
It was the start of things to come.

Tadic, Wijnaldum, Hazard, Martial left me down brutally in different gameweeks with no returns whatsoever..
Stuck with Martial for about 8 GW's. Nice to see him showing returns now.

My poor captain picks have cost me more than anything though.

Rough- Walcott, Hazard a few weeks ago, Januzaj & Young at the start of the season (terrible picks). Bertrand. Sinclair. The list goes on...

Really hasn't been the season for differentials, every time I've tried to gain some ground with a differential, it's backfired and I've dropped OR. Still gonna keep trying though, as it's surely the only way to climb the ranks quickly.

Starting the season with Walcott and then getting him back again for basically no return was rough.

Smooth was choosing Barkley over Deulofeu when Everton started firing.

But sticking with the safe bets seems to be the way forward. Hopefully bringing Aguero & Alli this week will prove that!

      DDG
      Ivanovic Williams Daniels
      Oscar Alli Siggy Sanchez KDB
      Aguero (c) Ighalo

      Elliot Bojan Mertesacker Bennett

No need to get DDG honestly nor Elliot. bad choices. Also wouldnt touch Oscar. Pick Payet instead of him. Ozil is needed as well before Sanchez is confirmed back. Having Ivanovic / Siggy / and Agu is fine enough honestly.

I really do not think you get your moneys worth and also they havent been so sound defensively lately. Would better get Gomes / Butland combo with that cash or even Fabianski and Adrian for example. I think there are better options out there than DDG.

I'm very tempted to do the same but I think I'll wait for the dbl gws as I really need the boost.

I can see why people are getting turned off ddg. It looks like lvg has gone less defensive in recent weeks in order to save his job. Utd are getting much more shots away but also conceding more goals so you would have to think there is a correlation there not just coincidence.

fwiw I am looking at a potential azpi/courtois chelsea double up (and maybe Oscar too) as a gamble to try and claw my way back up the OR. I know desperate times call for desperate measure alright but maybe my fpl season might mimic Chelsea's in that I can't get the top 4 (top 10k in my book) or even Europa league spots most likely (top 20k) so only thing left for me is to try and get top half of the table (100k).

"Last week I told you of my interest in Loic and I upset the Chelsea manager so today I will say nothing,” Garde said.

"I had a conversation with Arsene Wenger two days ago about certain players, Debuchy was one of them.

He has been compared to Arsene Wenger and it would be interesting to see what Wenger would be able to do with such a poor team in the relegation zone. Villa were a sinking ship long before Garde joined. This will be a bit of a blot on his CV but he certainly shouldn't be written off because of it.

          What he says ^^

Lukaku will either not play, or play 90, imo. Hence just stick him in the XI and have Payet first sub who is not guaranteed 90 minutes for the next fixture.

All this based on what Lukaku's diagnosis is after the weekend.

Lacking players that will climb you up the leagues (differentials) it's a very template team so each team you get a goal/CS/assist, most of your league does as well. Payet would be a good start, maybe look at Costa potentially next week?

So many non template midfielders finding form of late stats or fpl wise: Oscar, Alli, Wijnaldum, Siggurdson, Antonio, Arnautovic, Ramsey, Walcott, Yaya Toure (any more?)

Is there a chance for those of us having a "Chelsea" season to make somewhat of a come back? If so which midfielders are the most likely to have a big second half to the season?

I didn't mention Payet as he has not really had a chance to show form yet but yeah Payet, Sanchez and Hazard are another two potentially explosive options which could have a big bearing on our fpl seasons.

Bit of a gamble on Kun getting his form back again. I remember the last season he had like this that was constantly interrupted by injuries he never got fully fit and his form suffered iirc.

Ighalo hs some tough fixtures coming up and is in the same boat as mahrez and vardy were a few weeks back. Can he keep it up? who knows but the real question is can you sell him and lose the value as he will probably be fine again once the tough fixt clear up.

Lukaku looks to be in the form of his life so can't argue here apart from possible burnout or injury.

He still has more tough fixtures in the next 6 imo.

I think only NEW and possibly swa could be classed as any way nice fixtures in the next 6 for him. Even NEW and swa are potentially tough fixtures as both have had a resurgence in formal lately with Newcastle beating spurs and putting it right up to arsenal away.

Kane Lukaku Ighalo on current form. Still think Aguero needs more time. Would also keep an eye on Costa.

        Lukaku > Kane

Fit, and has better fixtures next 2.

A lot of love for Kane?

Personally would much rather have Ighalo

Does anyone know if Davies has beaten Rose off for that spot? Or will they constantly rotate?

No consensus on the issue as of yet. The weekend FA Cup matches will provide some clue.

As a Spurs fan, I think it will be rotation mainly so you will need a decent back up.

I think Rose will play the easier home games in which he can get forward a bit, whereas Davies is defensively a bit more solid so will play tougher games. Just my opinion, could be wrong.

Btw, Poch recently used wing backs at Watford and he could do so in games to come. In this formation, Rose will take that position.

Seem to rotate a lot. Go Toby or Vertonghen if you can afford

Anybody considered wildcarding before the first gw when it arrives?

Also seems that the bench boost is more suited after a wildcard when full 15 are nailed with decent fixtures.

If its a combination of both wildcard and bench boost it could be the equivalent to having 18 or 19 players in a single gameweek.

Probably best for the DGW with most fixtures rather than the first one. As it stands, a Liverpool-Everon final will result in only 1 postponed match, hence resulting in only 2 DGW teams.

This is not the DGW you are looking for.

FA Cup QFs should decimate the Premier League fixture list. It's around the time when the 5th round has been played that the DGW work really starts.

Fair point. Assuming there is a DGW with more than 1 extra fixture.
All depending on who it is it could be a crazy week for points. Lots of people will be using they're chips either way.

JK: "Kolo should be available next week, Dejan will be available after Manchester United. Phil needs one-two weeks longer." #LFC

It looks like the PL title will be a 3 horse race, Man City, Arsenal and Spurs

What do people think are the chances of each team, I reckon :

      Man City 65%
      Arsenal 25%
      Spurs 10%

I'd agree with that, for City to have played so bad and only be three points off the top, you'd think it's theirs.
