Once again the “Frisking” of the fixture list signals the start of the countdown towards another gameweek. The brief is simple – we take the fixtures, block off a month or so, and then tell you the teams with the strongest and weakest schedule in front of them. Newcastle and Demba Ba then proves us all wrong.

The Strong

Arsenal

Robin Van Persie is ablaze, Theo Walcott is hinting at consistency, Aaron Ramsey and Mikel Arteta are providing the creative spark. In attacking terms, things couldn’t be much better for Arsene Wenger’s side. Fantasy managers surely need to get on board with at least one of these assets, as the fixture list suggests that the goals will go on flowing.

West Brom pay visit to the Emirates this weekend having looked wholly unconvincing against Liverpool on Saturday. The Gunners seem an obvious source of returns this weekend, and with Norwich, Fulham and Wigan to come after that, it’s hard to deny Van Persie’s recent claims that he feels he will score in every game. After last season’s run of goals – he has the pedigree to go on delivering and the fixtures to assist him.

Stoke

Monday night’s 3-1 defeat to Newcastle will serve as a setback but there’s no denying that Tony Pulis’ side have the fixtures in front of them to prompt a rapid recovery.

A trip to Bolton shouldn’t carry any fear for the Potters. Even with a questionable attacking threat away from home, they will fancy themselves against the obliging Bolton defence. Following that, both QPR and Blackburn visit the Britannia for matches that offer real promise for goals and clean sheets.

While Jon Walters continues to earn interest having been assigned spot-kick duties, it’s the defensive prospects that are likely to tempt Fantasy managers. Asmir Begovic and Ryan Shawcross have obvious appeal, although the sight of skipper Shawcross limping from the field early on in last night’s game will cause concern for Pulis and his Fantasy owners alike. We’re still waiting on news from the Stoke camp on that – we know it’s a muscle injury, but little else.

With Shawcross perhaps looking at a spell on the sidelines and Marc Wilson also nursing a knock from the Newcastle defeat, there is a need for caution. Stoke’s defence could be facing upheaval for the trip to Bolton, although the international break will then hopefully give Pulis the opportunity to nurse back his injury doubts.

Andy Wilkinson could benefit from the casualties; he seems to have cemented the right-back role and with Robert Huth perhaps needed to fill in alongside Jonathan Woodgate or Matt Upson, his start looks secure.

Everton

Leighton Baines is back in the game. Having promised so much going into the season and, having seen the departure of Mikel Arteta’s craft at set-pieces boost his Fantasy appeal, the fixture list has denied him the opportunity for big returns. This is now about to change with Everton set to embark on a kind run of opponents that must surely bring the foraging full-back to our attention.

A price drop to 7.8 in the Fantasy Premier League game will make him slightly more palatable, but it’s the fixtures that do most to convince. Once the Toffees get this weekend’s trip to Newcastle out of the way, they have four home matches in six with Wolves, Stoke, Norwich and Swansea all visiting Goodison.

Fleet-footed winger Royston Drenthe will also require monitoring over that spell as Everton at last come alive as a Fantasy prospect, having spent weeks off the radar.

Tottenham

Six wins in seven for Tottenham – like their North London rivals, the form is outstanding right now. Similarly, the fixture list suggests that there’s every chance for continued returns.

Those Fantasy managers mulling over whether to chase Rafael Van der Vaart’s recent avalanche of points should consider the cost of further hesitation. Short of injury, it’s difficult to conceive that the Dutchman, like Van Persie, will fail to continue delivering consistent returns in the month ahead.

Aston Villa, Bolton and Sunderland are the next three sides at White Hart Lane, whilst Harry Redknapp will take promising away form to West Brom and Norwich before gameweek 19. An away trip to Stoke in gameweek 15 looks tough but even the home encounter with Chelsea in gameweek 17 appears to promise attacking returns.

Also Consider…

Sunderland – Ignore the trip to Old Trafford this weekend and the Black Cats have a rather enviable little schedule in front of them, which should see Steve Bruce improve on their current league position. Three home games in four, with Fulham, Wigan and Blackburn at the Stadium of Light, will likely find them amongst our “Strong” selection next week as plans for investment are hatched.

Bolton – Owen Coyle’s side are floundering but the Trotters’ boss can at least take comfort from the upcoming fixture list and start plotting a route to mid-table. Three Reebok encounters in the next five bring Stoke, Everton and Villa to their door – all matches that could fetch goals to boost the Fantasy reputation of Martin Petrov and Chris Eagles that little bit more.

Man United – While Fantasy managers start to fidget uncomfortably at the prospect of further blanks from Wayne Rooney and Nani, the fixture list presents a reason to show patience. Three Old Trafford encounters in the next five offer Alex Ferguson’s men the opportunity to build on the 1-0 win at Goodison. It might just be worth holding tight to their big assets and assess them again following the weekend clash with Sunderland.

The Weak

Newcastle

Monday’s superb victory at Stoke offered good indication of just how far Newcastle have come. The Magpies are in dreamland, sitting snugly on the tail of the Manchester clubs, with Alan Pardew fighting to stave off talk of European football. However, while the form and league placing is outstanding, we’ve every reason to show caution for the month ahead given Newcastle’s schedule.

As we stressed in last week’s “Frisking”, we have our doubts that the Magpies can carry resolute defensive form into November. Everton will test the St James’ Park rearguard this weekend and, after the break, Pardew takes his side to City and United, before a home clash with Chelsea – clean sheets look very unlikely on that run.

As for Demba Ba, there’s little doubt that he presents outstanding value but, following the Everton game, he will surely find it difficult to further his reputation given the opposition in front of him. It’s another classic form versus fixtures scenario.

Fulham

Martin Jol’s side continue to frustrate. There’s Fantasy talent in their ranks but, so far, only Clint Dempsey has even hinted at delivering consistent returns. The 2-0 win at Wigan last time out may give Jol something to build upon but the Dutchman now takes his side into a tricky four-game run, starting with the visit of in-form Tottenham this weekend.

Trips to Sunderland and Arsenal then follow – neither of which appear to offer too much promise. That is then followed by a home encounter with Liverpool to kick off December. All in all, the prospects of Fulham actually stringing together some positive results and decent Fantasy returns remain fairly bleak.

Also be wary of…

Liverpool – Jose Enrique is picking up investment this week but, in the short-term, his potential may be limited to attacking thrusts. Fail to keep a clean sheet against the Swans and we don’t see defensive returns for a while with Chelsea, City and a trip to Fulham to follow.

Norwich – Fantasy managers clinging to cheap defensive options within Paul Lambert’s squad have little cause for optimism in the coming weeks. The gameweek 13 home clash with QPR looks the best prospect, but trips to Villa Park and City, with Arsenal at Carrow Road in gameweek 12, creates a testing schedule.

Swansea – The Swans rely on home displays to maintain their form and league placing but, with United at the Liberty next, this could be a difficult month for Brendan Rodgers’s side. Trips to Liverpool this weekend, and Blackburn in gameweek 14, will likely mean that Swansea will need to find rewards from the gameweek 13 home clash with Villa.

Aston Villa – Alex McLeish’s outfit also have a daunting November ahead of them. This weekend’s visit of Norwich looks vital; slip up there and Villa then have testing trips to Tottenham and Swansea, followed by a home clash with United.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Good peeps, I need help. 140 points off mini league leader so need to think about catching up. Team this week:

    Vorm, (Ruddy)
    Shawcross, Enrique, Simpson, (Gabbidon), (Kompany)
    Nani(vc), Silva, VDV, Pilkington, (Dyer)
    VP(c), Aguero, Sturridge

Worth taking a hit to sort out defence? Any other areas needing attention?

the general opinion is NEVER take a hit in defence. you lose four points and the chances are that your new purchase will only deliver 2 or 3 points in return.

in any case, your team doesn't look too bad.

I guess the danger is (depending on Shawcross) he may have to play Gabbidon against City this week.

I do agree in general though that when a hit is made for a defender it has to be justified over time rather than just because of one week's difficulties.

If you can afford Baines it's probably a good time to get him. I had him for 4 GWs early on for 21pts. Getting rid for the next 5 when playiing MC, MU, Cheski and the pool turned out to be a good move but there is no reason now why he won't go back to averaging 5pts pGW. I had hoped he'd drop a bit more so I could buy him back but too late now

      nope.

the temptaion of Evans is understandable, MUN defence for a cheap price.

but the rotation risk is high and, looking at your list of names, Evans will have to improve to compete with the rest.

Yeah, I agree. I'm thinking about bringing De Gea in for some MUN coverage - cheapest of the only nailed on back line (De Gea, Vidic, Evra) imo. P Jones is tempting also, but I'm swaying towards spending the extra 0.6m to get 100% certainty.

Lesson number one with wildcard - never start playing with the idea of using it, if you don't really have to use it.
My team is not very bad and I'm ranked little under 20 k, but after playing with that idea, it seems impossible to resist wc button anymore!

I could get this team gw12 onwards and get rid of given, s.taylor, simpson, moses, petrov - so it is a good idea, isn't it?

    Howard, Vorm
    Richards, Walker, Enrigue, Evans, Wilkinson
    Silva, Vdv, Walters, Drenthe, Allen
    Rvp, Rooney, Bendtner

Only bigger problem is to choose two of Walters, Drenthe and Sessegnon.
Maybe Walters and Drethe, because I would have Bendyboy?

    Cheers for any response 🙂

I don't think you need to use it tbh. If you do though, I personally think you have too much invested in defence. Richards or Enrique (or both) should probably go, enabling you to upgrade Bendtner to someone like Suarez or Adebayor. I'd also rather Ramsey over Drenthe, but then I'm a gooner so perhaps slightly biased.

Downgrade Bosingwa, to say McAauley, or Olsson.

That gives you a bit more money to upgrade your midfield.

No need to get rid of Ade in my opinion, he's similar to Suarez in that he gets chances, and just needs to re-find his shooting boots. Just round the score from a huge score I'm predicting.

I can see why you want to WC, you can't get VDV without re-organising your defense. But, if you do, hang on a week. Otherwise half the players you get in will get injured during the break and you'll be stuffed. VDV is injury prone, you don't want to pay top dollar and flick your WC for a guy who's about to sit out for six weeks with a hammy.

Besides if you WC next week, you can switch all your players due to lose points for players on the rise straight off. Then just before the deadline, when you know who's fit and who's playing, you can build the team you're going to play, with, hopefully, a bit more cash to spend.

Yeah, I'm swaying towards b) - slightly better fixtures, rotates slightly better with my Stoke duo and slightly cheaper. Friedel and McAuley (or even Olsson for the greater attacking threat) is also tempting - would leave me enough to bring Rooney in for Aguero in GW13. Which of those do you think is best?

        Yeah, pretty similar alright!

        Swaying towards either
        a) De Gea & Macauley, or
        b) Friedel & Macauley (the extra 1.1m will enable Aguero -> Rooney in GW13 which could be a deal breaker.

Also, this double switch would be after this GW as Given/Dunne are the ones to make way.

Does anyone else think Stoke assets have lost their allure since they lost to Newcastle?

I was planning Given - Begovic, or Bos to ShawX, or Murphy to Walters.

Since the weekend with ShawX possibly out for a while and Walters not certain to play up front I've shifted focus to Everton & Sunderland. Stoke may be a different team without ShawX and the confidence has to take a dent when you lose three one two weeks running

I was thinking Drenthe but want to wait and see. Particularly since I've decided on Howard already. Will probably regret it.

Sess is 0.6 cheaper than Larss, only 6pts less but ownership is 1.6% against 15.8%. Also form is 9.0 to 5.7 in favour.

Any possible interest in Ramires? He's 7.2, so certainly more expensive, but I'd still put him at the high end of the mid-priced midfielders.

I'm reluctant to rely on attackers from non-dominant teams. Obviously the right player at the right time can be just as successful, but I'm always afraid they'll go a few weeks with nothing, and then they're an eye-sore in my team and I get all these wild restructuring ideas that include point hits.

BAE! He's looking very sharp at the moment, he took a free kick off VDV (which implies he's been practising and might take a couple more) and had a great top corner shot saved against QPR. Could easily have made a couple of assists too. More people are backing Walker since his (kind of lucky) strike against Arsenal but I reckon Benoit will outscore him over the season.

No. Rooney and Nani might be worth it but they are still losing value. Buy when they hit bottom IMO.
Sturridge and Ade can score any time so you may regret shipping them out. Is any defender worth a 4pt hit? If you want de Gea or Evra long term they would only be worth it if they were about to rise and Kenny and Ward were about to fall IMO

It's not ALL about the team value though, and Ward is about to fall anyway. Not usually worth getting a defender for a hit but United only need one more clean sheet than wolves to pay it back, which I expect them to do.

Yes imo. Watching VDV play makes me think he'll keep on scoring silmilar points to last 4-5 weeks if he stays fit. Good team, good fixtures, no CL disturbance, good finisher, selfish, set pieces, list goes on..

Outscoring Silva lately and soon to be the highest scoring midfielder in the game. Sounds like a proper kneejerk praising but still.. No reason to select Lampard instead, especially with the price difference.

I don't even know whether Gervinho was a good punt or not? Did you enjoy having him?

He hasn't been that bad. Scored 5,15 and 5 in his last 3 weeks.

Thats 13 more than Adebayor the past 3 weeks, definitely something to consider there!

I actually considered getting him in as a differential before RVP's goal-scoring streak began. Fortunately, I made the right choice. 😀

RVP + Gervinho double up. How would that work out? haha
Would get pretty insane if they begin to run riot

I managed to captain him in the big week he had. I would have like to have kept him but wanting RVP in was more prefered... And didn't want to double up by selling Adebayor...

Wolves Johnson. Yes, he's been warming the bench a lot though I could play Warnock I guess.
Could probably find someone cheap to replace him.

            bla, LIV, WOL

            whats not favourable there

i have vdv but not silva

silva only has 7 points more and has played an extra game

also with frank being rested for CL games i think hes more nailed on to start than silva

All of Lampard's points have basically come from 4 games. Silva is more consistent, and is cheaper.

and with 2/3 nice fixtures now id expect him to score bigger than silva over that period, we'll see though

People! I have a striker dilemma. I have Torres in my team (snigger all you want) but he has to go apparently he was sulking again midweek.
I have RVP and Suarez already and 1.4 in the bank to work with.

    Thoughts?

True, but can't see him scoring more than one. loads of potential for big scores from others that have a history or scoring 2 or 3 at a time
