We make our way to the Weekly Shop this Wednesday evening, as we assess the player lists of our partner games to pinpoint the likely targets that will make up our own weekly squads.

As always, the player analysis is split into two sections: I’ll break down the key targets that no squad can do without in “Better Buys”, before seeking out those one-shot “Poundstretcher” prospects that can provide us points, whilst freeing up funds.

For this week’s selection, we’re once again scanning the player lists in our two partner games – FantasyBet and Premier Punt.

Better Buys

Manchester United picked up an eleventh clean sheet of the campaign at Anfield, maintaining the best defensive record in the division. David de Gea (FantasyBet 5.5m, Premier Punt 8.1m) made four saves and picked up two bonus points against the Reds and now welcomes Southampton to Old Trafford this weekend. United have conceded just four times in 10 matches in front of their own fans, whilst for all their recent improvement, the Saints continue to toil on their travels and have scored just twice in the previous four away matches.

Everton’s 3-3 draw at Stamford Bridge exhibited both their strengths and weaknesses last weekend. Only City have scored more goals this term, though on the other hand, the Toffees record of 32 goals against is better than just six other sides. Given that weekend visitors Swansea have scored just twice in their last five road trips, though, Roberto Martinez’ men will be optimistic of a third clean sheet in six. Leighton Baines (FantasyBet 6m, Premier Punt 6.5m) offers a relatively cut-price route into the defence and served up two assists against the Blues, reminding us of past glories and his ability to produce returns at both ends of the pitch.

Given that the Swans have kept just a single clean sheet away from the Liberty, Everton’s attacking assets are also worth considering. Ross Barkley (FantasyBet 7m, Premier Punt 10.4m) has been quiet in recent weeks but has already notched six goals and eight assists and is a viable midfield option, having recorded nine attempts over the last four league matches. Striker Romelu Lukaku (FantasyBet 9m, Premier Punt 12.3m) is also likely to be a hugely popular pick this week, having scored or assisted in each of his last six home appearances.

After a lay-off with injury, Roberto Firmino (FantasyBet 8m, Premier Punt 10.6m Forward) has featured more regularly for Liverpool and had growing influence over the last 12 Gameweeks. The increased pitch time has seen the Brazilian record a 50% involvement in the Reds’ goals over that period, picking up three goals and four assists, including double-figure hauls against Man City and Arsenal. Up against a Norwich with three clean sheets to their name all season, Firmino looks the man most likely for the Merseysiders.

Poundstretchers

Watford’s home encounter with Newcastle offers the Hornets a chance to bounce back after chalking up a fourth straight loss at Swansea last Monday evening. Quique Sanchez Flores’ men have kept six clean sheets in ten in front of their own fans and with the Magpies drawing blanks in their last two away matches, Heurelho Gomes (FantasyBet 4.5m, Premier Punt 6.9m) looks an ideal option between the sticks. The Brazilian remains third on points in the overall goalkeeper leaderboard and with new arrival Costel Pantilimon waiting in the wings, should be eager to put in a performance here.

We’re also backing Watford’s budget frontman Odion Ighalo (FantasyBet 5.5m, Premier Punt 8.1m) to end a three-match goal drought this weekend.. The Nigerian had netted nine times in as many matches prior to that run of blanks and Newcastle roll up having shipped 21 goals in their last ten away fixtures, conceding two or more in five of those ties.

Sam Allardyce’s pragmatic approach appears to have given Sunderland a fighting chance of survival – two wins and eight goals scored over the last three indicates a revival of fortunes on Wearside. Patrick Van Aanholt (FantasyBet 4.5m, Premier Punt 7.6m) has been the unlikely source of three of those goals and even served up an assist against Swansea. The in-form left-back now welcomes a Bournemouth side that have drawn blanks in each of their last two on the road.

Jermaine Defoe (FantasyBet 5m, Premier Punt 8.3m) has also been in fine form. The veteran striker netted five times in the two recent victories including a hat-trick against Swansea and could deliver great value against the Cherries.

If you’re looking for a cheap enabler in midfield this week, Jesse Lingard (FantasyBet 4.5m, Premier Punt 5m) could help to fill a spot and provide funds to spend elsewhere. The Manchester United youngster is a bit of a risky pick, but, having started the last two and scored against Newcastle, the midfielder could be utilised once again for the visit of Southampton.

West Brom’s Craig Dawson (FantasyBet 5.0m, Premier Punt 7.6m) is another to consider. The right-back welcomes midlands rivals Villa to the Hawthorns and, as well as scoring twice this term, provided the assist for Salomon Rondon’s FA Cup winner over Bristol City last night. Remi Garde’s side have scored just three times in their last five road trips, suggesting a clean sheet could be on the cards for Tony Pulis’ defensive regulars.

These are the contenders for my weekly contest lineups heading into this week’s fixtures. I’ll bring you up to date on my progress in our partner games – FantasyBet and Premier Punt – in my articles next week, as I continue my quest for profit in the 2015/16 campaign.

    What do you think guys? Which one to pick as my remaining defender. Currently I'm def starting Toby and Dawson. Can't decide which to pick out of:

    1) Kosi (CHE)
    2) Wolly (lei)
    3) Betrand (mun)

    Any insights would be welcome.

          I like the Palace ... not on the fan site, but I'll have a read now!

          Actually I'm an Aussie and have never had any reason to follow any club, I got onboard Palace purely because they have Jedinak playing there, and I'm a big fan of Yohan!

    1: Would you rather have A) Daniels or B) Williams?

    3: Would you do A) Kolarov + Bellerin + Mahrez --> Baines + Daniels/Williams + Wij/Firm (for a hit) or

    Much appreciated

    Austin @ 7.0? Might have missed some discussion on here but why so cheap? Quite disappointing that price, easy swap for anyone.

    8.0 would have called for some competitive compromises.

            I think Long is under-rated but I don't think he's the starting striker SOT need to finish the season. So hot and cold. On his day, he can be an annoyance to defenders.

            But more often than not, he's just a pesky little striker running around without a head.

              It's a shame Pelle fell away so quickly ... they could really do with an Andy Carrol / Wilfred Bony type player there who's big and strong and ready to get on the end of those long passes.

                Pelle's a very good target man - his hold up play and little knock downs are fantastic to watch.

                But he's so pathetic in front of goal.

                Austin on the other hand is cool as a cucumber. Looking forward to that stupid chicken dance.

        seems abit short sighted to price him assuming he's back from injury.

        Plenty of players started the season injured or doubtful and were still priced that way. Sturridge, Aguero, Sanchez....

        FPL towers usually get their pricing spot on though, so quite curious.

    Who are you most fearful of not owning this week?

    For me it's either Ighalo vs a shakey NEW defense, or Firmino in the false 9 and with some great form against a shot Norwich side!

    I also think Silva will outscore KDB enormously over the coming few weeks, but that transfer is just a bit sideways for now!

      When it comes to being fearful of not owning players, ownership is all that matters. Neither Firmino nor Silva has high ownership at all, so for me I'm not afraid of them. So unless your ML rivals has them they don't really matter.

      For example I believe both could easily outscore Kane, but as I don't have Kane and his ownership is so high, that's the main man I fear this week.

          Played right wing, very deep. Even fetching the ball from his goalkeeper pass on a couple of occasions. He needs to play centrally.

          Contrast Wijnaldum who now plays Nr 10 whereas he was on the left wing previously.

      I've got Monreal and I'm happy. That said, it NOW seems that Monreal is a little more of a rotation risk than Bellerin. And I think Bellerin is more popular because he does the more flashy things - raids up the sideline, dashes into the box - that could, potentially, result in attacking points.

        Bellerin also has the cool rep of maybe being the fastest in the PL. (though with the ball give me Sanchez).

      Thanks for all the replies. Bellerin certainly looks the more elegant footballer and occasionally scores a great goal, but from an FPL perspective Monreal is always there working for you, racking up the BPS (520 to Bellerin's 468)

        Which translates into 8-7 actual bonus in favor of Monreal.Those dudes are a coin flip really.

    Whatcha reckon lads?

    A) VVD -> Baines
    B) VVD -> Targett*
    C) Alli -> Barkley
    D) VVD & Alli -> Jags & Barkley

    * if doing B then I can afford DDG/Alli -> Elliot/Sanchez next week. With the other 3 options I'd have to lose one of Payet/KDB to afford Sanchez.

    DDG
    Bellerin, Moreno, Simpson
    KDB, Payet, Mahrez, Alli
    Aguero, Kane, Lukaku

    Hennessey, VVD, Wolly, Surman
    Bank 2.3m, 2FT

        Yeah for sure. B is totally to raise cash with the upside that he may hold on to his spot. 2 cleanies and 2 assists in 2 games - you'd think he'd be given a chance to keep his place in the team. It's the front 7 of the below that really appeals:

        Sanchez, KDB, Payet, Mahrez
        Aguero, Kane, Lukaku

          You think he definitely isn't first choice? 3-5-2 with Berty in the 3 seems to be working for them and I'm not sure who else they have to play right wing back?

              Fair enough. It seems likely that LIV, EVE and MCY will have a blank in GW27, and if their DGW is moved to GW25 then it would seem a bad idea to lose assets from those teams before then.

              Perhaps A) is the best route and just wait on Sanchez until he is back match fit and we know the DGW dates.

                Whatever you choose, I would recommend only using one transfer this week so you have two mext week when, hopefully, we should have a better idea of what is happening. (So don't do D!)

                  Would you say it'd be quite unusual if Everton are not included though? Just thinking that my idea is to bring in an Everton this week so will be ok using a ft.

                    Given both Merseyside teams lead from the first leg and they each have two opportunities to get a double from these fixtures, the chances are very good that they will get one.

                    The question is whether they will schedule the double before or after the blank.

                    So if you have Everton or Liverpool assets I would suggest holding until we know more. If you don't I would suggest saving and waiting until we know more if you have only 1FT available this week.

                      I only have 1 FT but currently have 1 everton and no liverpool, so getting 1 more everton shouldn't be too bad, should it?

                        They have some decent fixtures and if you only have one player from those teams you should be OK. However, if you also have lots of Man City and Newcastle, or Stoke and Villa assets, you will need to be a little careful about how many more Everton and Liverpool you load up on because you will want to field 11 in GW27 and we don't know who will blank yet.

      https://fpldiva.wordpress.com/2016/01/08/double-gameweek-planning-part-one/

      If Liverpool win their C1C semi, the Everton will have a DGW regardless of whether they beat Man City. Man City will only have a double if they beat Everton. We don't know when the games will be rearranged to. There are four potential gameweeks that could be used as far as we know.

                  TL knows his stuff I'm sure. At a guess, it maybe he doesn't hold much store by the early DGW idea. He may well be right, but when I searched the Premier League rules I didn't find a clause say at least 3 weeks notice must be given so I didn't feel I could rule it out. The Premier League have bought games forward before.

      From an FPL perspective, I like Danny Graham leaving the Premier League so he can't sucker some poor fool in when he get a start and a goal before going on another of his vast barren runs and ultimately being dropped again. (And no, I have never owned Danny Graham in FPL.)

      I still think Austin, Saints have all the means for a top-tier attack with the creators they boast but have been reliant on a 30 year old, turtle-esque, incompetent, joke of a 'striker' in Pèlle to finish their chances. Long's done alright in his stead but I'm not convinced he's the sort of striker best suited for their playstyle or to compliment Mané if they're persistent with two up top. IMO, Austin has great hold up play (Pèlle did as well at times) & he flourished last year with Zamora. I think any combo of him & Mané or even Pèlle to fit into the Zamora role, will see a turn around in Saint's attacking prospects.

      Shelvey's looks to be a quality signing for sure, he's a poor man's regista.

    A lot of useful posters around. Help me out here. I'll state here that i really like Firmino as a punt and i think that nor is a prime fixture and he has 3 good fixtures after. I'll also state that i am a gambler by nature. I also like Mirallas and i have a reason to believe he is nailed atleast for the next 2 fixtures which were good fixtures but i think both Swans and NewC are having an upturn in form and Liv fixtures are much much better. I also have no value attached to Mahrez as i've sold and bought him only just recently. I don't like his next four fixtures. This is my team. I have 2FT and 0.6M in the hand.

    Butland McCarthy
    Bellerin Toby Moreno Evans Smith
    KdB Ozil Payet Mahrez Westwood
    Lukaku Kane Aguero

    The moves i have thought of are

    a) Mahrez -> Mirallas
    b) Mahrez + Smith -> Firmino + Targett (I've got to downgrade somewhere to get 0.2M to do Mahrez -> Firmino and i know chances of Targett starting are dependant on whether SOT stick to the system)

    The only thing stopping me from doing this is DGW and blank planning as getting in too many Liverpool and Everton assets could be a problem. I am thinking a lot of my team is stable anyway to get my Firmino 4 week punt onboard this GW itself. What would you do in this situation and what do i need to keep in mind regarding GW27 and the DGW? I really want to punt on Firmino.

      If you don't think you'll hate yourself for having Targett in your team staring at you, go for it, meaning B. I don't think he has long for the out of position first team, but that would be a great gamble to be right about.

          We don't know that is the problem. The DGW may be first or the bank maybe first. The blank will be GW27 and we don't know for sure who will be in the DGW either although it is likely Liverpool and Everton will both have one.

      You can punt on Firmino. Your maximum potential blank GW exposure with your current squad plus Firmino is five, so you can get that back down to three by GW27 if you manage your FTs carefully.

          I'd wait a week if you don't need to spend a FT. If you need to spend one or lose it, I might gamble on replacing one now.

    If Son gets in the team, does it negatively impact Alli?

    Everton attack, is this correct:

    Nailed - Lukaku, Barkley, Barry
    For the other three sports - Kone, Cleverly, Besic, Deulofeu, Lennon, Osman and maybe even Pienaar (esp as Bains is back - chemistry on left wing etc)

      As such Lukaku & Barkley are the only two viable options for Everton front six?

          He's up against six others for a spot, no? So likely to play 2.5 games over next four?

    Best route here?

    A)
    GW23: VVD -> Baines
    GW24: KDB -> Sanchez

    B)
    GW23: VVD -> JEvans/Daniels
    GW24: DDG & Mahrez -> Elliot & Sanchez

    C)
    GW23: VVD -> Targett
    GW24: DDG & Alli -> Elliot & Sanchez

    DDG, Hennessey
    Bellerin, VVD, Moreno, Wolly, Simpson
    KDB, Payet, Mahrez, Alli, Surman
    Aguero, Kane, Lukaku

    Bank 2.3m, 2FT

    chances of an everton dgw round 60-70% i think. May someone clarify. Evenso, will the blank be before their dgw so liv and everton assets out of action. And where will the dgws be. Been away a while

      No one knows when is the DGW. Everton will have a DGW at least one of Liverpool or Everton progresses to final.
