Our first members article of the weeks delves into the Gameweek 23 data this evening. Tottenham’s in-form midfielders catch the eye, whilst he also assess the recent displays of City and Liverpool’s weekend goal heroes before analysing the recent decline of Arsenal’s playmaker and Everton’s lone frontman.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

So the dgw boils down to 2 things

    1. Its early and you load up on dgw players
2.it's late and you avoid the bkank players for coc final

In either case, its the same teams to either avoid, or load. until we know the dgw, we sit on our hands

    Butland
    Walker Bellerin Ward
    Alli Ozil Sanchez Payet
    Lukaku Kane(vc) Aguero(c)

    Hennesey, Mahrez, Simpson, Daniels

    1FT 1.1. ITB.

Was thinking of addressing the Walker problem? West Ham play Villa Sunderland and Nowich in 3 of the next 5 games.

    A. Walker > Reid (4.8)
    B. Walker > Byram (5.0)
    C. Save

Jenkinson was never first choice anyway. It was Tomkins 🙂

True. But he was just filling the gap now they've got a natural RB. No guarantee Byram will start but it's likely

Shane Ferguson was the pricing anomaly of 3 or 4 seasons back - he was the only £4.0m midfielder in the game.

This is worrying. I like the FIFPro proposition of limiting squad side while prohibiting player loaning and transfer fees. Things like this would be for the most part fixed, and agents would vanish (and could be banned anyway, FIFPro wants to get rid of them and I don't see how the clubs benefit from their presence either, see this, for example: http://www.thesecretfootballer.com/articles/the-secret-footballer/29898/strange-case-of-star-player-caught-in-middle-of-chairman-manager-transfer-standoff/)

Still, punishing Real Madrid for signing their reserve team coach's kids who already lived in the town, seems to miss the target.

    Current forward 8:

    Mahrez Ozil Payet Arnautovic Yaya
    Kane Lukaku Giroud

Which is better to afford bringing in Aguero?

    A- Yaya + Giroud > Aguero + Cheap mid.
B- Ozil + Giroud > Aguero + Alli (bench Yaya or Arnie)

After the announcement of the latest fixtures selected for live TV broadcast, the Premier League has issued the following statement regarding the rescheduling of the Arsenal v Leicester City fixture."We always seek to give fans a minimum of six weeks' notice of any fixture changes. It is only on extremely rare occasions we don't meet that aspiration during the normal course of the season.
"We are currently in discussions with Arsenal and Leicester City to see what can be done to help fans affected by this scheduling change."

I think they will score, but only once or in best case twice. So Özil might get an assist but he rarely scores.. I think Leicester will score vs Pool at least twice and Mahrez is usually involved

How much does a player playing against the team you support sway your decision making do you think? For example I have Arnie in my team, but I'm a united supporter, and even though he scored against us last time, and seems to turn up against the bigger teams (insert joke about United not being a big team anymore), I still want to bench him for the fact I wouldn't want him to score.

What a noon, I loved how he got an inherently defensive team playing so expensively after he took over from Moyes. Maybe he is a bit like Wenger at arsenal and he just doesn't seem to understand the critical importance of defending.

If he had as good players as arsenal this might work but since he doesn't he really could do with a defensive coach to give them a bit of balance.

      1. Doolittle
        • 13 Years

This idea that he inherited a defensive team and made them play well is complete revisionism, Moyes's side played a lot of excellent football - he just knew that defending was important as well. Martinez conflates 2 ideas - he believes that the only was to keep clean sheets is to park the bus. He has no game management ability, if we take the lead in the 90th minute, DEFEND THE LEAD! Having a good defence and playing good football are not mutually exclusive.

You are looking back with rose tinted glasses my friend. Moyes tactics involved getting down the sides and putting in crosses or playing direct balls up to fellaini. He had some good players in there that would play with skill but it was a zero risk strategy only slightly more evolved than big Sams tactics.

He wouldn't play the likes of coleman or other young players as he knew they would make mistakes.

Eh? Coleman was 1st choice under Moyes, he played 34 league games back in 2010-11. Moyes had his flaws, of course he did, but he was a damn sight better than Martinez with, generally, inferior squads. Moyes finished top 8 in his last 7 seasons, Martinez has the best squad we've had since the 80s and he is floundering.

Exactly, better with inferior squads due to pragmatic tactics. Coleman only got in in the end as Hibbert was injured most of that season but coleman was hardly played in the following two seasons.

I agree Moyes was a better manager but there is no way ye played as good football as ye are playing now (from an attacking, possession perspective).

To label Moyes style as attractive is just revisionism at its worst imo. This is the reason Moyes will never be able to manage a big club, his style suits getting the most out of a lesser squad not dominating possession in games and breaking down defensive teams.

                • 13 Years
                9 years, 11 months ago

I didn't say Moyes' style is attractive, I was saying that the idea that we played dour football with him in charge is patently untrue - the stuff we played under him was much better than the stuff Utd did. We didn't always dominate possession, but dominating possession isn't always necessary, and the link up play between Baines and Pienaar was always fantastic.

It's good for a neutral, but I don't enjoy watching Everton now - it's not enjoyable to know that we're going to concede stupid goals and throw away points.

The best I've seen Everton play in recent years was a spell in 2012, including this game:

                  http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/19615118

Swansea were flying, and we absolutely dismantled them, playing really excellent football AND keeping a CS.

Yeah I kind of agree with you tbf. I think Martinez is over ambitious in what he is trying to do but I do think the way he wants his football to be played is correct. He just doesn't have the players with the work ethic (or the man management skills to make them) to make it work. Everton have shown they can defend against the big teams when the players are being conscientious. The problem imo is they don't defend well enough from the front when they lose the ball against smaller teams.

    DDG
    Bertrand, Baines, Monreal
    Mahrez, KDB, Ozil, Payet(vc)
    Giroud, Aguero(c), Ighalo

    Subs: Arnie, Targett, Nyom, Butland
