Everton manager Roberto Martinez added to his options in the final third by splashing the cash on Oumar Niasse from Lokomotiv Moscow. The 25-year-old – who had previously been eyed up by the likes of Chelsea, United and Spurs – arrives at Goodison for a reported fee of £13.5m, making him the third most expensive signing in the Merseysiders’ history. Versatile enough to lead the line up front or take his place out wide, the Toffees boss stressed that Niasse isn’t just here to make up the numbers:

“He’s not back-up for anyone. He has his own ability, his own conditions and he is someone who can stretch defenders. He can open space and has a real intelligent way of combining for others. He can fit in different formations – on his own, with another, out wide. He’s flexible and at 25 it’s the perfect moment for coming to the Premier League.”

The History

Niasse started his career as a winger with Senegal second-tier side US Ouakam. Having signed a professional contract in 2008, he helped his side gain promotion that year before going on to win the Senegal Premier League in 2011.

After scoring 102 times in 154 appearances, he made his way to Norway on a six-month loan deal but managed just three appearances due to poor form and injury. Rejecting a move to French club Saint-Etienne, Niasse signed with Turkish club Akhisar Belediyespor in August 2013 – across 40 appearances for his new club, he served up 15 goals and seven assists, catching the eye of Lokomotiv Moscow prior to the start of the 2014/15 campaign.

Niasse took his time to settle in Russia, though still managed a respectable return of six goals and four assists in 19 outings across all competitions last term, This year, though, his form has picked up considerably – in just 23 appearances, he’s delivered 13 goals and 10 assists, which includes an impressive four goals and three assists in six Europa League matches.

On the international stage, Niasse turned out six times for Senegal Under 23s without finding the net. He has since been selected for the senior side on five occasions, scoring twice.

The Prospects

A long-term target of Martinez, Niasse’s all-round game makes him a canny acquisition for Everton. Strong, pacey and hard-working, he’s also good in the air and, as his decent assists return suggests, a very unselfish player in and around the box.

Although he was unavailable for selection for the Toffees’ midweek clash with Newcastle due to a work permit issue, it may well be that the versatile attacker is eased into contention before nailing down a starting role, according to his manager:

“Mentally he is ready – psychologically he would love to be involved against Newcastle on Wednesday. But from a physical point of view, his last game was on December 10 so it has been a few weeks [since he played]. He is refreshed and I think we need to give him an individual programme to get him up to speed, but in the same way, I want him to be used in the games to get that familiarity with the players and with the league, so that he can have a contribution straight away. It will be assessing every day to see how he adapts. “

From a Fantasy perspective, Niasse’s classification as a forward in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game will ensure that the vast majority give him a wide berth.

With Romelu Lukaku nailed-on as the lone striker under the Spaniard and Ross Barkley equally secure in the central support berth, Niasse’s best chance of securing regular minutes is likely to be on the flanks, though there’s no shortage of competition from the likes of Gerard Deulofeu, Kevin Mirallas, Arouna Kone, Tom Cleverley, Aaron Lennon and Steven Pienaar.

Arguably, such a scenario would merely strengthen Barkley’s position as the only viable midfield option at Goodison – the playmaker has started every league match this season, whereas the likes of Deulofeu has been selected in the first XI in just three out of the last seven Gameweeks.

Although a price of 7.0 isn’t overly expensive, Niasse’s likely reverse out of position prospects will ensure he remains overlooked in the mid-price bracket – particularly when Jamie Vardy and Odion Ighalo set you back 7.2 and 6.4 respectively. With Southampton new boy Charlie Austin (7.0) also throwing his hat into the ring with a debut strike against United, Niasse – for all his talents – will struggle to make a viable claim for inclusion in our FPL squads.

Should Lukaku be ruled out with the back problem that forced him out of last night’s 3-0 win, though, the versatile Niasse – providing he steps up his fitness and receives his work permit in time – could lead the line as the Merseysiders make their way to Stoke this weekend. If the big Belgian proves his fitness in time, though, Niasse will surely struggle to earn a central berth if, as expected, Martinez keeps faith in his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation.

If injured tempted to take short term punt on that Alberto Paloschi guy. Have no idea who he is, what has he done before joining Swans and is actually any good.

Think I'm going to not buy VVD just because I already have Bertrand.

Down to Cresswell or Azpilcueta now. Think the Chelsea man might nick it, although I do like the attacking Cresswell option.

Can't believe Lukaku's injury and how badly Barkely screwed me over in my mini leagues.

It's pretty much a 25 point swing of Lukaku had taken those two penalties.

Hey Lucy, apologies for being one of those posters who assumes because you support Southampton and are clearly knowledgable you must have access to super secret information and therefore know all the line ups in advance but...

Koeman expects him to recover from the knock for Watford but I don't know what that means for his starting chances. I'm certainly looking at him as a potential Lukaku replacement but he's the riskiest of the bunch.

What is everyone's thoughts on Payet? Having watched the last couple game he's played in, he looks like he's taken that Modric role where he is playing the pass before the assist. Hasn't looked like scoring...

As a really depressed Liverpool fan, I can see Liverpool struggling for goals even against Sunderland and Villa, so I don't see Firmino getting big hauls there, he just plays hot and cold. CSs more likely for Liverpool in those two than lots of goals.

On the other side, Sturridge could be star man there, if he is fit for one of those games, and he started training with squad this week. It's not uncommon for him to score on his return from injury.

Liverpool don't look that great at the back, but I think they can hold Villa and maybe even Sunderland. I think Liverpool will win those two like 1:0. I didn't think I would ever say this, but Lovren back is good thing.

      Same here.
LFC is damn to make his fans unhappy as they only mean business..

That's the difference between LFC fans and others.
ManUtd paid over 50M for Martial, a skinny 19yr old man just because they needed firepower.
Liverpool know they only need this for a decent finish, yet they couldn't pay 35M for A.Texeira.

Just saw Suarez getting 4 goals and an assist yesterday and just dreaming how LFC can replace this guy.
With him, LFC would have been battling, not for top4, but for the title!

Leicester this season really reminds me of Liverpool from 13/14. Varhez is like SAS from those days. I also see the same outcome, City getting title with nothing but class players. KDB injury is big setback, on the other hand.

Have been losing the best since the arrival of FSG!
Mkhitarian has surpass Ozil in Assist yesterday..
Losing Suarez, to be replaced by Balotelli.

more so, players are preferring other clubs than LFC, like Alexis, Mario Suarez, even Butland was 1st choice before Mignolet arrival but preferred Stoke to LFC!!
What the feck is happening at this club!
Trying to make profit on players' sales, buy young promising player and once confirmed, sell them.. It won't stun me seeing Phil joining Barca in the summer!

Sadly for him, he's not yet on that consistency level to be considered Barca material, but sooner rather than later he'll leave, thank god he has 5 year contract.

Beside stabilizing club from complete disaster, FSG have made very bad moves, haven't made big upgrades we all expected, and that bad rule reflects on the pitch perfectly. No improvement after more than 5 years since buying the club, same target, same distance as in 2010.

Noticed the Uni discussion on the last post...

Been doing a bit of life contemplating and wondering about whether to go to Uni as a mature student and take, say, a history degree. Anyone here done a history degree? I really wish i had done History over Business at Uni but it all depends on your end result:

Do you want to be a history teacher? do you want to be a full-time historian? or just for the knowledge, the first 2 i'd say go for it, the latter, i'd say not. In my opinion anyway

      1. Lucy.

Contrary to popular opinion, a top class history degree gets you more than teaching or archival research jobs.

          • 14 Years

Yes of course i was simply stating some of the options, all depends on the end result and what he/she wants to do with it. I personally wouldn't go pay 9k a year for a business degree now, it's not an end result such as radiography (first thing i thought of) there's an end job result there

    4. Lucy.
      • 12 Years

I've done a history degree... and then an MA in history... and now a PhD (along with teaching undergrads) 😀 I didn't pay £9k though, 'only' 3k.

What are your motivations for doing one? Where are you looking at going?

Lots of questions to answer before I can advise.

What age are you and what do you want to do in the future? If it is just a hobby for you then you don't need to go to uni and give up work etc?

mmm I wonder if it's just a hobby if I'm being painfully honest with myself. Thanks for the input everyone.

Lucy, please could you advise on how much work's involved with a history degree? How big is the step up from A level (got an A at A level, loved studying it)?

      1. Lucy.
        • 12 Years
        9 years, 10 months ago

The step up is fairly notable but you are given a whole first year to make that change (hence why it won't be counted towards your final degree). The main change will be in the way you are required to construct an argument. Rather than the A Level format of 'On the one hand, x argues this but on the other hand, y argues this', you are required to use the views of others to construct an argument which is not 'balanced' in the same way. By this I mean - You need to counter-argue those that oppose your view and you need to show why those that agree with your point of view are right. You need to engage with historical content on a critical level, skills which you'll develop throughout your degree. If you're cool with having strong opinions and justifying them, you'll get along just fine. In my experience, mature students tend to adapt better to this but I've never worked out why.

Your entire degree would revolve around the word. Without academic discussion/debate, it's all very dull.

As for work load: you typically, you would have 3 modules a semester, 6 for the year. For each module, you'd expect to read 2-3 20-page articles each week for your hourly seminars, as well as preparing 2 essays for each module, normally half way through and at the end. Additionally, you'd attend 2 hours of lectures each week, for each module.

The balance will change as you advance through the years, more reading, longer essays and fewer lectures.

Wouldn't going to uni as a full time student be a bit of a risk, then?

What about doing something online, like OU or even just something like: http://www.thegreatcourses.co.uk/category/history.html?CFM=category_slider

I dropped out of uni because I was only studying something out of interest, not because I wanted a career. Found it really hard to commit. Still interested in learning though, so been thinking about investing in a Great Courses, erm, course, to learn in my spare time.

OU could be a good option if it's purely for a hobby/interest or a love of learning. If you want to use to elevate your career or try new things, I'd advise going to university.

To be honest, in my case and most of friends (all which have now graduated) our degrees themselves, content wise, have served absolutely no relevance in our jobs and probably never will.

Needs to be the right degree too. Some employers won't even look at some degrees from some universities (very wrong, but it is what it is).

History is a solid degree though and it'll definitely help you in your career one way or another.

But for sure I wouldn't have the job I have to do or be in this career path without my degree (even if I'm never going to need to use the Quantum Mechanics content I learnt)

I needed a degree to get my job, but the actual subject - English - hasn't really done me any good at all. However, I chose English because I love it, I would never change my choice because I had so much fun doing it. It depends on your reason, for a job it may not be necessary, but I'm a big fan of learning for learning's sake.

Anyone fancy a one week punt? Could do worse than look at a WBA forward/mid.

Away to Newcastle but we have been inconsistent and defensively poor.

    http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/team-stats/defending/

To add to this, Mbemba was injured against Everton, Lascelles was then red carded and so will be banned. Dummett has injured his hamstring. Haidara the other left back is also injured and Mbabu who has played stand in left back is also a doubt.

    http://www.physioroom.com/news/english_premier_league/epl_injury_table.php#c16

As far as i can tell we only have three fit defenders, Coloccini, Janmaat and STaylor.

It could be that Rolando Aarons ends up playing left back or that Colback drops into CB and Taylor plays left back. Either way, i don't hold much hope of us keeping a clean sheet...

    Aguero, Kane, Ighalo.
Vardy to be popular going into GW27 so want to cover him but Ighalo with a good fixture too. Kane also plays :p

Many will bench Aguero but thinking about about a cheeky Aguero > Vardy for GW27 then Ighalo > Aguero after. Will probably lose 0.2 but Kane/Vardy/Ighalo could be potent with lots of 2 man strike forces about that week.

    1 FT, £1.9m ITB

    Gosling + Dann > Firmino + Borthwick/£4m (-4)

Just cant ignore Liveprool for the next couple of weeks, then sell Lukaku for Vardy in GW27, sound good?

How nailed is borthwick? Firmino looks like a good transfer, just that i dont trust Pool for steady performance levels. Id go for the firmino transfer, doesnt feel like a hit is needed here.

Yeh im in the same boat for Pool, been burnt previously by them this season. I need to downgrade someone in order to afford the transfer, so either Lukaku > £7m or Dann > £4m. Palace arent keeping clean sheets and Dann (ignoring his goal on Wed) has done eff all.

Not to mention getting rid of Lukaku this week would create a benching headache.

Borthwick seems nailed due to the uncertainty of Young/Rojo/Shaw injury

        Thanks for the feedback Antolol

At 230k last week I was looking set to potentially hit 100k for the first time ever in FPL.

Fast forward to GW25, 42 points and a 170k drop. 400k now, so frustrating!
