We round off the day with our usual pre-Gameweek members article, as we cast an eye over the captaincy conundrum ahead of the midweek round of fixtures. As always, we analyse the Opta data for the main contenders and assess the team statistics and Rate My Team’s reckoning, before rounding off with our opinion on the current poll standings in light of the data analysis, including our view on differential captains.

The Captain Poll

Manchester City’s penalty shoot-out win over Liverpool at Wembley has perhaps had an effect on your armband decisions this week. With Sergio Aguero playing 120 minutes on Sunday ahead of an Anfield re-match with the Reds, the Argentine is – for once – amongst the chasing pack behind Jamie Vardy.

With West Brom set to pay visit on Tuesday evening, the Foxes frontman tops our Captain Poll for the second successive Gameweek due to his outstanding home consistency – Vardy has scored or assisted in 11 of 13 appearances in front of his own supporters.

At the time of writing, Romelu Lukaku and Mesut Ozil tie for second spot with 14% each. After enjoying the weekend off, the Belgian now faces a trip to Villa – he bagged a brace in a 4-0 win over the Midlands outfit earlier this season and should be fully refreshed to take advantage of Remi Garde’s strugglers.

Meanwhile, Ozil delivered a goal and assist at Old Trafford and now looks for a third double-figure haul in four at home to a Swansea side with one clean sheet on their travels.

As for Aguero, he faces a Liverpool defence with just one clean sheet in the last seven Gameweeks. The Argentine has already netted against Jurgen Klopp’s side in the league and with the Reds sweating over the availability of a number of central defenders, he could be in line for returns at Anfield in a match that City surely have to win to remain in the title race.

There’s a handful of differentials lurking further down our poll for those willing to take a punt. Diego Costa is selected by just 7% for Chelsea’s trip to out-of-sorts Norwich, though there remains question marks over his minutes after Guus Hiddink admitted he could be rested for one of the next two matches with the Champions League clash against PSG in mind.

Marko Arnautovic will be looking to replicate his weekend 15-point return at home to a Newcastle outfit that have lost five road trips on the bounce. Riyad Mahrez, Alexis Sanchez and Ross Barkley offer viable alternatives to their aforementioned team-mates, whilst United’s man of the moment, Marcus Rashford, seeks a third successive brace at Old Trafford as Watford pay visit on Wednesday night.

Next up, we now delve into the data over the last four matches to shed further light on the situation and assess the validity of the current crop of poll results.

    A) Payet > Willian (nor)

If I don't get Siggy this week then next week is more of a certainty, juicy fixtures and plays gw 30.

Norwich and Villa have been poor defensively so I feel it's important to capitalise on that, Chelsea have been beginning to gel and Everton have been well rested. Barkley can be frustrating to own though.

You already have a Benching dilemma, I would start prepping to make sure you have gw30 coverage.

Maybe ditch iggy he hasn't been delivering? Maybe ditch Sanchez to fund an iggy to vardy move though I would be tempted to hold for now and see if he delivers against Swansea first

Alright lads, let me talk you through a strategy here I'm forming. Few of you maybe in a similar situation so could also work for you.

Atm City and Newcastle are the only two teams which have a game in GW30 and may have a DGW in GW34. With that in mind, I'm tempted to take a gamble on that now and start stocking up on City and Newcastle players.

I already own Aguero. This week I have 2 FT's burning my pocket and will use one swapping Delaney for Janmaat (who will be benched this week, but played GW after for Bournemouth at home). The week after that I will use my two FT's to bring in Kompany and Silva. That will leave me with enough players to play GW30 through which I will save a transfer. If the City Newcastle DGW is schedule for GW34, I should then have at least 7/8 DGW players in my squad, ready to go with at least 4 free transfers to add to that with what I please.

If it so happens that City's DGW isn't scheduled for 34, well then oh well, I can just wildcard GW33 and prepare for it that way. Otherwise I have the luxury of saving my wildcard for GW36 and then unleashing the bench boost bonanza on GW37.

Taking this gamble seems especially worth it considering City and Newcastle actually have really good fixtures up until GW34 (I mean who wouldn't want 3 City players for Villa at home?), so if I do have to use my WC in GW33 I shouldn't be in any worse of a position. Thoughts?

      • 10 Years

It's a nice strategy but you're relying on no injuries occurring to your squad and you may miss out on players hitting form that you could get

      1. In Bale We Trust
        • 15 Years
        9 years, 9 months ago

Not really. I'm lucky as I have 2FT's right now and will be able to save through GW30. If anything I should have FT's spare and would be able to get more than 11 DGW player for 34 if I needed. Also if injuries really did hit bad, I wouldn't be averse to taking a hit for a DGW player

I think the other theory is you can also play say the gw34 dgw if it were to happen a bit puntier than those without a wildcard remaining as at least you can fix your team.
