Friday afternoon continues with our usual pre-Gameweek members article, as we cast an eye over the captaincy conundrum ahead of the weekend’s five fixtures. As always, we analyse the Opta data for the main contenders and assess the team statistics and Rate My Team’s reckoning, before rounding off with our opinion on the current poll standings in light of the data analysis, including our view on differential captains.

The Captain Poll

Once again, Sergio Aguero is the clear leader in our poll. After bagging a brace in City’s 4-0 thrashing of Villa, the Argentine has collected over 56% of the votes cast ahead of a trip to a Norwich side that’s shipped 12 goals in their last four at Carrow Road.

Somewhat surprisingly, Harry Kane has been earmarked by just 20% for a trip to Villa. The Tottenham frontman has netted four times in his last quartet of road trips and is now up against a dire defence that’s conceded 15 times in four and have one foot in the Championship.

Below that duo, Riyad Mahrez (7%) and Jamie Vardy (5%) are shaping us as major armband differentials for Leicester’s home encounter with a Newcastle outfit that’s lost six on the bounce away from home. Whilst Vardy has struggled for returns of late, with a goal and assist in five, Mahrez has stepped up his consistency and produced points in five of the last seven Gameweeks, including an 11-point haul at Watford last time out.

Beyond them, the likes of Josh King, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Christian Eriksen, David Silva and Dele Alli are have the potential to spring a surprise, with 2% or less backing so far.

Are these current standings backed by the underlying statistics?

Let’s start breaking down the player and team data for their respective last four matches and shed a little more light on the situation.

How does Aguero perform without Yaya?

Pretty well. Here's a look at the matches Yaya was either absent for or played very few minutes

    GWK 8 - Yaya absent- Aguero gets 25 pts ( MCI 6 - 1 New)
GWK 15 both yaya and Aguero miss this game ( STK 2 - 0 MCI)
    GWK 22 Yaya plays 34 minutes - Aguero gets 16 pts (MCI 4 - 0 Palace)
GWK 28 Yaya absent, Aguero only gets 2 ( Liv 3- 0 MCI)

But if you are a glass empty kind of manager you will note that in the two away games where Yaya was missing City lost, badly to both Liverpool and Stoke. In fact Stoke outplayed them quite considerably.

Aguero..Kane...Aguero. Changes hourly. Most likely will stay on Aguero. His goal involvement is nearly 60%, whereas with Spurs Kane is nowhere near that. So while I think Spurs can score more this weekend, I think Aguero will get a greater share of what goals City scores.

Goals scored away is poor compared to Spurs, but shots in the box is roughly the same as Spurs away. Man City have had chances but not delivered. That may be to do with Aguero being absent more compared to Kane and when he did come back he was not as sharp. I consider him pretty sharp now so the stats indicate that with a sharp shooter to put away chances he will do well. I worry less about Man City losing or being poor - just want Aguero to be good (eg that West Ham game). Another of those would do me.

Worth digging around the members area to look into it in a bit more detail. the stats certainly indicate that Man City have been inaccurate but not necessarily that Aguero has been inaccurate.
Aguero has missed seven games this season and only managed less than 30 in two others. Of those five were away. Given he was absent for so many it could be argued that those very many shots in the box from City that failed to produce goals could have been goals if Aguero was there.

Yeah I' on the same reasoning really. Can see the Spurs game turning into a rout, but wouldn't be confident of Kane bagging all the points. Whereas if City score, it will be Kun. Also for safety I think most in my ML will be on Kun, so don't want to risk not captaining him for a haul.

City plays badly out regardless of the presence of Yaya. Norwich will impose more difficulties than Newcastle and Villa IMO. I do not feel confident to give the armband to Kun

Agree with u 100%. Norwich may even get a draw or even a win. Remember its a 12:45 KO and I rmbr City early kick offs at spurs and at home to Liverpool ended in a big defeats.

      Silva

      GWK 8 - 8 pts
      GWK 15 - 2 pts
      GWK 22 - 12 pts
      GWK 28 - 2 pts

Same as Aguero - at home and against weaker teams Silva does well without Yaya. Away against tougher teams not very well.

      1. Frank Black
        • 13 Years

So that means that we shouldn't bring Silva in. Yaya isn't there but they're not at home and they're facing Norwich who's been able to concede very few goals against tough opponents.

I don't think there's enough data to come to that conclusion. It could also indicate that Silva excels against weaker teams. Stoke played like Barcelona when Man City visited and Liverpool were excellent against them. Can Norwich put in that kind of performance? I'm not sure so I'd still consider Silva a pretty good pick this week.

Honestly, i'd feel safer having a City defender(cheaper one like Clichy) rather than Silva. Norwich has scored only in two of the last five games and with Kompany back i'd rather give a chance to City's defense honestly.
If i did go for Silva i'd be doing Payet to Silva to Payet again before United.

      Unless chasing its Kun (C).

Norwich have been shipping at home against arguably the most lethal attacking team in the league on their day with an in-form, FF proven striker. No-brainer - might not work but all roads point to it for me.

      • 13 Years

I think Kun plays best when it's a dynamic game. So if Norwich won't park the bus and actually play football (after all, it's a home game, and they need points), it shouldn't effect his chances.

How do Aguero and Mahrez perform against weaker teams?

Excluding appearances of less than 60 minutes:
Aguero: 41 points in 10 games (4.1ppg) against teams currently in the top half,
and 78 points in 9 games (8.7ppg) against teams in the bottom half.
Mahrez: 82 points in 12 games (6.8ppg) against top half teams,
and 116 points in 13 games (8.9ppg) against bottom half teams.
Conclusion: Both are deadly against weaker opposition, but Mahrez is more fixture-proof.

Only 3 of Aguero's away matches were against bottom half teams (GW3: 2 points v Everton, GW20: 9 points v Watford and GW24: 5 points v Sunderland) - 5.3ppg, which suggests (on insufficient data) that he may be slightly less effective when playing away.

      Aguero has only played 2 matches against the bottom 4 (GW24: 5 points v Sunderland(A), and GW29: 11 points v Villa(H)) - 8.0ppg.
      Mahrez has played 5 matches against the bottom 4 (GW1: 15 points v Sunderland(H), GW5: 11 points v Villa(H), GW13: 9 points v Newcastle(A), GW22: 1 point v Villa(A) after missing a penalty, GW27: 3 points v Norwich(H)) - 7.8ppg.
So their performances against the bottom 4 are no better on average than against the bottom 10 (but again the data is probably insufficient).

Not quite sure what all this proves, but it looks a very close call between Aguero and Mahrez for the captaincy (I don't own Kane). At the moment my armband is on Mahrez, since home against Newcastle (32 away goals conceded) should be easier than away at Norwich (22 home goals conceded) - but perhaps Rafa might an immediate effect on Newcastle, so perhaps I ought to switch to the more popular choice of Aguero. Decisions, decisions!

Team news reckons Silva could be at risk, with Sterling pushing for a start. Surely not?

think this was done before the Yaya news

      Now I'd say both start

Maybe, but the opening sentence refers to Yaya out, and the line-up puts the F brothers in the middle and Silva out left...

Well same issue as most in these parts, I'm sure..

-4 for Silva in for Ozil? I'm fielding 10 at the minute

    Forster

    Alder - Fuchs - Otamendi - Williams -

    Siggy - Ozil - Mahre

    Kane - Aguero - Vardy

Subs; Payet - Watson - Azpi

I like Payet and Wham playing well.

Fixtures not so great but he seems to be invovled in their goals a lot

It's just a weekly punt too. I think I'll stick since it's not worth the -4

YYT - Siggy - Mahrez - Arnie (Payet)

    with Yaya out, should I:

    A. get rid of him for any mid(*) for -4
    B. just play VVD (sto)
    C. just play Francis (SWA)

    ??

(*) can't be Spurs nor LEI mid

    Current team for GW30:
    Butland
    Kompany/Simpson/VVD/Wimmer
    Mahrez/Arnie/Alli
    Kun/Kane/Vardy

    Subs: McCarthy/Payet/Sanchez/Bellerin

1FT. Not sure what do to as I have 11 good starters. Tempted to maybe get in Silva/Siggy for Sanchez, but may just save the FT for tougher times ahead. Thoughts?

And Norwich played very well at the Etihad and were unlucky to lose late

Swaying between captain Kane & Vardy but seemed to have settled on Kane as Leicetee don't tend to stuff teams and I think nerves will set in if they go 1 up so they will protect

Had my heart set on Ramsey > Silva, but the news of Yaya's injury has spooked me a bit. Still dont have Alli so he looks a safer bet, wouldve just preferred a City man because of the DGW prospects.

Have 11 for this gw and 2fts
    Loris
    Daniels Williams Simpson wolscheid
    mahrez alli arnautovic
    kane kun vardy

    Courtois payet sanchez souare

A: souare >> future dgw def...Clyne? Bellerin?..or kompany (has this gw and future dgw)
    B: payet >> silva / sterling
    C: sanchez >> silva / sterling

Benefit of B and C is that I can bench one of the defenders or if alli doesn't play...payet doesnt have the greatest of fixtures he is on form..

If i was sure i am using my WC in gw 33, then i will get rid of payet but since i am not sure when to use WC and i really want payet for the dgw34...makes sense to keep him i think..tough call
